Pheasant Tippets

Is there something in woolly buggers that make receivers fish so powerful? Just say the name is enough to make you laugh, especially when you tell someone not familiar with fly fishing flies and observe their reaction. Most discussions on the trout fishing flies at a time or another, to turn to heading furry vermin. Here are 3 reasons above, the trout fly brings much to the network.

The first because of a Wooly Bugger will help you catch more trout (and many other fish for that matter), that's life-like motion. Two main characteristics of the fly to give realistic movement in the water, making it irresistible to fish. This is the tail and on the palm Body Hackle. Tied with two marabou or rabbit fur, the tail is very soft and wavy, up and down as it gets underway. Maintain weak links the queue when the fly is going to create more action in the water. Hackle Palmera Flex also return the body in the water as the fly, giving the feeling of being on the legs. Trout see this fly so alive and edible.

Secondly, the furry creatures are "buggy". They are not intended to represent any specific foods trout, but are decent imitators many aquatic insects such as pearls and crane fly larvae. They can also be easily confused with small fish, leeches or crayfish. This probably explains why they are so effective in capturing many species of fish such as trout, bass, bluegill, fish, and many others. Generally related to size 10 hooks or more, make a meal of opportunistic trout. It's like giving the fish a chance to eat a double cheeseburger when they fed on Brussels sprouts all day.

Finally, because of their size and "bugginess" curses patterning Wooly Great Attractor. A fisherman can enjoy creative this even if the trout does not take the flight. So you may wonder: "How can fish for trout with a high fish are hitting?" The answer is using a Wooly Bugger to attract fish to take another flight.

Simply attach a dropper, like a pheasant small queue John copper, or using Scud 18-24 "of tippet to the bend of the hook The Wooly Bugger. The size and movement of the Wooly Bugger still attract trout to look more closely, but even if there are good chances of finding one that held the dropper.

fishing a fly on a spinning rod or with a float?

i am new to fly fishing. lovin it. last weekend i was talking to a guy at a campground by a river and dam and he said he caught some fish on 'attractors' with his spinning rod and float. How does that work exactly. what are attractors and how do you use them with floats? wont the float spook the fish?

You can fish flies with a spinning outfit, but it's not the preferred method if you ask me, and, as luck would have it, you are asking me.

The way you fish flies with a fly fishing outfit is that you cast your nearly weightless fly with the weight of your fly line and the elastic action of the rod. It's a great system that has evolved over many centuries. With a spinning outfit, you don't have a weighted line, so the weight has to be at the end of the line, where the fly is. Obviously, if you're using a dry fly, you don't want something that will sink the fly, so you use a bobber for the weight. You cast the bobber and the fly goes along for the ride. Yes, the bobber can spook fish -- at least much more than a fly landing by itself. The bobber can also swamp the fly and cause drag on your fly. The fact that you CAN use a fly on a spinning outfit is proof of how versatile that gear is, but it's still non-optimal -- basically a workaround.

An attractor is just a fly that is not designed to look like a particular creature. They're usually tied with some dramatic shape or color to "attract" the eye of a feeding fish. Humpys, Wullfs, Wooly Buggers, and Stimulators are attractors. So, the guy you were talking to was probably using a big fat attractor because it maintained buoyancy even after the splashdown of the bobber and it imitated nothing more specific than "a bug." Incidentally, the other broad category of fly is "imitator" which is meant to accurately imitate a certain insect or other forage.

If you decide to go fly fishing, one of the most important decisions that you will make is choosing the right rod. After all, if you don't have a great rod, you are going to have trouble catching the fish that you want. There are a variety of things that you should be considering when you need a new rod, so here are a few great tips that can help you pick out the types of fishing rods for your needs.

The first thing that you should think about when trying to choose the rod is the flexibility of the rod. This is very important when it comes to fly fishing. Some rods are slow while some are fast, and it is a good idea to understand how this all works when you are going to purchase a new rod. Usually amateurs who are just getting started will want to go with rods that are medium action. Then they can go on to a more sophisticated rod in the future, once they get adjusted to the rod that they have. Of course every person is going to have a different preference, due to the way that they cast.

You should also think about what type of fish you are going for when you are trying to pick out your rod. This will help you to choose the right rod for your needs. You will need to consider the weight of the fish that you are fishing for. Then you will want to choose the rod that will be able to handle the larger fish. Most common fish are easy to catch with light to medium rods, but if you are going for some of the larger game fish, you may need to go with a heavier rod that will deal with the weight.

Most people will want to keep the cost in mind when they are choosing their fly fishing rods. While you definitely want to make sure you get a high quality rod, consider your budget. You probably don't want to spend a huge amount of money on the rod. Figure out what you can spend, and then work to get the highest quality rod for the money you are able to spend.

Speaking of quality, it is so important that you go with a quality rod. While you don't always have to have the best rod with the most features, you will want a rod that is made of high quality materials and that will perform efficiently for you. If you do a lot of fishing, then spending a bit more for a high quality rod is a great idea.

These are just a few things that you should keep in mind when you are purchasing a good fly fishing rod. With these top tips, you'll be able to make a wise choice when choosing the types of fishing rods you need. Then you will be able to go out and enjoy fishing, and you'll always be sure to get a great catch with your nice, new rod.

When it comes to fly fishing in Idaho, vacations spent on the South Fork of the Snake River definitely top the list. The river starts in Yellowstone National Park and flows straight to the Palisades Reservoir via Grand Teton National Park. The South Fork is the portion of the Snake River that runs between the Palisades Dam and Henry's Fork. This is the perfect combination of big fish, great scenery, and nearby Jackson Hole lodging.

The Best Time For South Fork Fly Fishing

Fly fishing in the area begins from the last week of June to the first week of July with the appearance of the Salmon flies, Yellow Sallies, and Golden Stones. Late autumn is the favorite time to fish for many of the local fisherman since water levels are considerably lower than in the spring.

This gives anglers the chance to wade in new areas from Yellowstone National Park to Henry's Fork. The fish are ready to put up a good fight by this part of the season. In the winter, there is some shore fishing, but actually wading in the cold river isn't recommended. You will want to check the local fishing regulations to learn which portions of the river are closed.

All is not lost on the days the fish simply aren't biting. Bringing a spinning rod and reel along with a good lure will almost guarantee a successful fishing trip. The quiet days are also the perfect opportunity to get away from your Jackson Hole lodging and enjoy some of the wildlife travelling through the area. Moose, elk, and eagles are just some of the animals that peek out from the forest.

Gear Tips For South Fork Fly Fishing

Since many of the brown trout in the river weigh over ten pounds, stick to a four to five weight rod in the beginning of the South Fork fly fishing season. Tackle, on the other hand, should depend on what you see along the shoreline. Early in the season, use Salmon fly patterns such as Birds Stone and Hairy Mary on a size 4-8 hook. Nymphs such as Girdle Bugs, Stonefly Nymphs, and Black Rubberlegs can also provide you with an afternoon of aggressive fish. Fly patterns such as South Fork Sallies and Yellow Stimulators imitate the Yellow Sallies that appear at this time as well.

The later part of July and early August bring mayflys and Pale Morning Duns begin to appear. Use size 14 in July and slowly move to an 18 hook by the end of September. Try patterns such as Pink Cahill Parachute, Biot Dun, and Wooly Buggers. This is also a great time to break out the caddis like Elk Hair and Hemingway patterns. When it comes to fishing in the late fall (from August to October) think hoppers, Blue-winged Olives, and Royal Wulff in sizes ranging from 18-20.

South Fork fly fishing is some of the best in North America. The river is close to Jackson Hole lodging, Yellowstone National Park, and has plenty of large cutthroat, brown, and rainbow trout. For year-round fishing adventures, this is definitely the place to go.

i am want to buy comletely new fly tying material mainly for well everthing im want to ty for redfish ,sandtrout ,panfish , and bass. and the material has to be about all together 40 dollars i all ready have a vise bobin etc. but im not to sure wat is the basic patterns i need to ty for all those thing if somebody could tell me the pattern that would also be very helpful.

There are books that tell you specificlly what materials to use. i would go to a fly shop or a book store and find some books. i also reccomend 2nd hand book stores. u will find many out of print and cheaper books that r just as good. since you have the tools already u wont need a starter kit. if it is possible return the tools and buy a starter kit which has all the materials and a small book or video. i believe cabelas may be able to help you with ur tying needs and they offer many types of kits.

Extra Spool

Do you think that bright colored fly lines spook fish?

I fished a pond recently and put on the same wt line and leader on some extra spools but one fly line was clear, one was green and one was orange. I used a wooly bugger and presented it in the same manner with each line. I caught the most bass with the clear line. I also caught quite a few fish with the green line. With the orange line, I did catch fish but I could actually see the fish hesitate before making the decision to strike or not. Do you think the color of fly line makes any difference in your catch ratio?

That is an excellent question and not an easy one to answer. I use a combination of clear and camo intermediate lines, darker floating lines (like Rio's Nymphing line) and some floating fly lines that are really bright, like yellow or orange or light green.

The fly fishing line manufacturers have created a wide variety of lines over the years. I remember when they first came out with a line of brightly colored fluorescent lines, saying how great it was that you would be able to see your line. People bought them and used them, including many experts. They worked just fine. Then they came out with the clear and camo intermediate lines and they worked just fine. Then to the darker greens and some have a brighter blue to match the sky, and they will work just fine.

I think what that shows is that it really doesn't matter so much as to what the color of the line is, but rather how you, the fly fisher, uses it.

If you drift your fly line, any colored fly line, directly over fish that have been fished really hard, you will spook the fish. If it drifts over fish that seldom see a fly fisher, then it may not matter as much. After all, the rivers and lakes carry tons of natural junk in the water, all very natural for the fish to see. I have had salmon swim right between my legs, because they don't fear us, out in the ocean they never saw a person standing in the water. To them, it was just more objects in the water, nothing to worry about. On the opposite side of that, you can step up to the edge of a stream and spook all the fish out of a pond just by them seeing you or your shadow or feeling the vibrations of your steps. They have seen a lot of predators like us and respond very quickly.

So, keep your fly line from drifting over the fish. Use fluorocarbon tippet to make it even harder for the fish to see your leader. If you are in a river, start working the water closest to you and work your fly and fly line out farther into the stream in stages. That way you will decrease your chance of drifting line directly over fish that are in a feeding mode.

Use longer leaders to allow you to keep the line farther away. If you are casting upstream, learn to toss a reach cast to get your line off the seam you are going to work your fly.

In the lakes, I usually use the clear or camo lines or the newer Outbound fly lines by Rio, with a clear mono shooting head then a colored running line. My sinking lines are almost all dark or dark headed with a running line that may be colored lighter. For dry flies you can use the newer clear lines, I have not tried them, but I do use a long leader and fluorocarbon tippet.

If I am going to work a fly from my WaterMaster raft, I cast it out then strip out almost all of my fly line so the fly is 100 feet behind my boat. That gives the water a 100 foot distance to calm down from my passing through and for the fish to feel comfortable again. Then I work the fly in short 10 foot strips and then snake the line out and move my boat about 15 feet, then work the fly again.

So, down and dirty, I don't think the color of the line is critical, it is how you use and present the line that counts.

Larry

Often unheralded, the wedding coordinator captures much of the blame and never the credit for well-executed weddings. Some coordinators are solo while some come with quite an arsenal of personnel. But all being equal, their value are sorted down to the following:

Stress Relief.

We are in a wedding crazy country. Being predominantly Catholic and pretentiously religious people we have a tendency to invest a lot in our nuptials. An often-mentioned jibe is, but always half true, we do not simply marry another person. We marry into a whole family. Hiring a coordinator can give the couple an unbiased anchoring point into uniting the preferences of both sides of the families including friends and patrons.

Sometimes just keeping the peace between clans is worthwhile enough to hire a professional.

Focus.

The most popular churches sometimes are booked so far back that the entire wedding takes a year or more to produce. This fact alone will warrant a point person to task list activities and to do's while the engaged couple live through their careers and gather resources at the same time.

Keeping focus also means contacting and constantly reminding the concerned guests, participants and most importantly suppliers to keep to the schedule. This would be equal to planning a one-night concert, innumerable details and intricate logistics all for a single performance.

Cost Control.

Being such an emotional adventure for the couple, most weddings go haywire in the budget department because of a lot of impulsive decisions. Having the heart instead of the head often leads to years of debt for newlyweds. Something we should always try to avoid.

The planners experience in creatively juggling "wants versus needs" will establish parameters in behalf of the couple and keep the budget in line. Being a professional, the planner will keep financial positions private and may sometimes intercede by extending terms for payments since they are usually highly regarded by suppliers and entertainers.

A Fistful of Wisdom

Experienced coordinators have seen it all and heard it all. Legal and sacramental advice comes with the package of these planners. Churches have different restrictions, venues have deficiencies and provinces have different beliefs, superstitions and traditions. Coordinators can pour all these particulars and line up a pocket of solutions to satisfy most requirements.

Free Time

Getting a coordinator most importantly gives you invaluable free time to spend on finer matters, such as interviewing photographers and videographers to capture important moments in your celebration. Even choosing the albums can be quite a chore. Picking out the flowers and décor to match your theme, listing down items for the bridal registry, attending to fittings, going to salons and most importantly meeting up friends and sponsors to make sure they will give your union the support it deserves. Actually most of what has just been set will be done with much help from the coordinator as they can filter the ones you should talk to or deal with in the first place.

In sum, the wedding coordinator gives the most value by covering the intangibles leading to that special day. They are like an insurance policy to enable the couple to experience more joy. They will carry the extra safety pin, the spool of thread, the extra car, the duct tape and the very best ones carry something borrowed and something blue.

Anglers Trout Fly
What are some good tips for a long time bass angler starting to fly fish for trout?

I have been a long time tournament angler for black bass. But starting out (as of last week) fly fishing for trout, casting is ok, but it seems that is one thing that will always need improvement. Would love some tips on books, vids, what flies to use when, ect. I live in MT and have acess to great fishing, so any clues to a good beginner spot would be a plus, and let me know if you want to go fishing!

The internet is full of resources. Coming from a bass background, you may find the most similar and most forgiving set of flies to use are streamers like wooly buggers and clousers because nymphs and dries require more experience to drift without any drag. You can use a heavier tippet like 4x and tie on a lightly weighted bugger, then just work it like you would a jerk bait, jig or plastic worm - up down or across they all work. Try stripping line at different speeds or just letting the fly hang in the current when it gets below you and slowly strip it back. Use a short leader and tippet no more than 8 feet until you get comfortable. Even 6 feet can catch fish if you have trouble getting the cast down with a longer leader. Pay special attention to areas under riffles and it's hard to go wrong. Use these in larger water if you can (2 feet deep is getting into good streamer water), then once you become more comfortable with casting a fly rod you might hook up with a fishing buddy to show you how to drift a dry fly. At that point you'll just need to slow down your cast and watch how others fish - there is little substitute for direct observation. Nymphs are probably the most difficult because if you use an indicator you'll get a lot more wind knots at first, and without one you really have to be familiar with presenting blind, drag-free drifts.

The Nantahala River fly fishing for trout is a feast for all fishermen. Fly fishing in winter and spring can bring problems, but the river is equipped with rainbow, trout and brown trout and should therefore be able to capture at least some fish dry fly, drowned fly or nymph. Fishing in this area is not only a pleasure because you have the opportunity to catch big fish, but many because the region is so beautiful.

Walking through the Nantahala River gorge overlooking the breathtaking that you will never forget. Although the leaves fallen trees that does not mean there are not many impressive views of the river and mountains. The "superior" Nantahala River is given water during the winter and spring, so it should be a population at high trout you catch. During the coldest weather of the year is somewhat of a challenge to fish for trout with dry fly, but it gives you the opportunity to master their nymph fishing abilities.

Using some basic models, such as ear nymph, Pheasant tail hair and you should have no trouble getting at least some bites. Having the ability to recognize and bite the hook is a different story. The trout in the headwaters of the Nantahala River are not too demanding for the presentation of the nymph to these practices should not be a problem. Do not forget to take our strike indicator, as they spit often the pupa before releasing them hooked.

Taking a trip to the mountains of North Carolina for a Nantahala River fishing trip is always a fun and exciting adventure. There are many other opportunities in an around the Nantahala River gorge so make sure to check it out before your next vacation.

Woolly Bugger

How do you tie a woolly bugger fly..?

Tying the Secret Wooly Bugger

Hook:
Mustad 79580, Daiichi 1720 or similar 3xl streamer hook, sizes 2-12

Thread:
Red or black 6/0 Danville’s

Tail:
Black marabou fibers

Body:
Olive GSS

Ribbing:
Black saddle feather

Topping:
Fluorescent Silver Doctor Blue Marabou

Collar:
Mallard flank feather

Body:
Dubbed and picked out strands of Pearl GSS

Tying Note: For an even simpler “Secret” Wooly Bugger, dispense with the hackle ribbing entirely, creating your “hackle” with picked out strands of GSS. In addition to the Black/Olive Bugger described here, you may want to try tying this using different tail and hackle colors as well; Brown or Tan-dyed Grizzly Hackle and a Brown or Tan tail is another of my favorite color combinations.

Royal Wulff
Would the royal wulff work now? fly fishing?

I just started fly fishing and need to try new flies and it came in a pack. Northern New Jersey

Living where you're at right now I'd say no.
This time of year in that area your fly fishing is going to be very limited.
1rst thing in the morning until 10am you will need the following:
ant patterns - including flying ants
beatle patterns
griffith's gnats
small blue wing olives (size 20-22)
micro tan and olive caddis (size 18 and 20)

If you decide to fish the evening take some small caddis and blue wing olive patterns as well as some Isonychia (slate drake/chocolate drake)
some small sulphers and a few large stimulators just for the helluva it.

e-mail me at pheasant.tail@yahoo.com and I'll "seasonalize" you arsenal from march until november

When it comes to fly fishing in Idaho last vacation to South Fork Snake River undoubtedly tops the list. The river begins in Yellowstone National Park and flows directly from the Palisades Dam in Grand Teton National Park. The southern branch is the part of the Snake River, which runs from Palisades Dam and Henry Fork. It is the perfect combination of great fish, great scenery and accommodation near Jackson Hole.

The best time for South Fork Fly Fishing

Fly fishing in the region starts from the last week of June to the first week of July with the onset of salmon flies, Output yellow, and Golden Stones. Late Fall is a favorite time for fishing for many local fishermen, water levels are considerably lower than in spring.

This gives anglers the opportunity to venture into new areas of Yellowstone National Park in the range Henry. The fish are ready to put a good fight in this part of the season. In winter, there are some fishing from shore, but really cold fording river is not recommended. You want to check local regulations for the fishing to see what parts of the river are closed.

All is not lost on days when the fish just are not biting. Bring a spinning rod and reel, bait well with virtually guarantees an output fishing success. The quiet days are also the perfect opportunity to leave his presentation of Jackson Hole and enjoy the wild life traveling around the region. Elk, moose and eagles are just some of the animals on the wood.

Arts of South Fork Guide Fly Fishing

As many of brown trout in the river, despite more than ten pounds, stick to a period of bar four or five weight at the beginning of fishing South Holder fly season. Address, however, must depend on what you see along the coast. Early in the season, use patterns of salmon flying birds Hairy Mary stone and a size 4-8 hook. The nymphs and bugs Gaza Rubberlegs Black Stonefly nymphs and may also offer an afternoon of aggressive fish. Fly patterns such as South Fork Yellow exits and pacemakers mimic yellow sallies listed at this time too.

The last part of July and early August put Mayfly Pale Morning Duns and begin to appear. Use size 14 in July and move slowly to connect from 18 to late September. Pink Try patterns like Cahill Parachute Biot Dun and Wooly Buggers. It is also a good time to break habits Elk Hair Caddis and Hemingway. When it comes to fishing in late fall (from August to October) said hopper, blue-winged Olives, and Royal Wulff in sizes ranging from 18-20.

South Fork fly fishing is one of the best in North America. The river is located near Jackson Hole Lodging, Yellowstone National Park and has many great murderer brown trout and rainbow. For the year fishing adventures, it's really the place to go.

Streamers Trout
what are some good trout streamers beside woolly bugger?

I love the good ol' Mickey Finn. I dont think it gets enough praise but it works for me time after time. I like to use the marabou version. I just like the way marabou "breathes" in the water. Another good streamer is Bob Clouser's Clouser Minnow. I like to strip it in slow current and it also works well when cast at a 45 degree angle downstream and swung through the current. In N.E. Ohio we also use Dredgers...These are similar to Wooly Buggers with beadchain or dumbell eyes tied in contrasting colors. The weight of the eyes gets the fly down to the bottom where the Steelhead are lying.
Check my profile for a link to my website for more streamer patterns if you wish.
Swinging a streamer is my favorite way of fly fishing.

Dry flies used to imitate adult insects, so before you fish a trout stream, make sure you have an understanding of what they usually feed on fish before deciding to use dry flies. Once you have determined to be a natural choice for a particular stream, trout, pasta can be applied to your line of clothing they will float up into the water. They mimic a wide range of foods such as ephemeral adults, caddisflies, flies, grasshoppers, crickets, ants and many others.

The magic of seeing a trout, bass and bluegill take a dry fly floating on the surface of water is one of the most interesting fishing fly. Dry flies offers several advantages over wet flies when fly fishing. This is controversial and, at a meeting of dozen fly fishermen could get 12 opinions.

Dry flies are designed to imitate the final stages of the life of an insect. Wet flies Submarines are used to imitate small fish, worms and grubs. Dry flies should have the correct form and the right size and float in the right way.

A ground fishing dry fly is the main attraction of taking periods of surface activity when there is little or nothing to deserve our attention and allow the use of imitation flies. Few cases where work attractors. Same could be as effective as or more effective than flies seem very imitative.

Most anglers favorite river dry fly and is interested in nothing else. Some use nymphs, wet flies, conical head leaching patterns, dry flies and streamers. The nymphs, like the tails of pheasant, hare's ears ribbed and gold halves could be worked into the surface film or to add a photo of the small tear and work with them to deepen along the edges of weed for a lot of action.

Nymphs are actually on the scene right after the bell just before the hatches vol. They work well all year and are excellent for fishing deep in the colder months. For best results, using short strips recover quickly. Nymphs are made to simulate aquatic insects that have yet to emerge as adults. They are yet in the lifecycle of the submarine which had not yet reached the adult stage.

Learn fly fishing basics that are necessary to learn how to fly fish. It is not hard, it is just different. Once you are able to master the basics you could fish anytime you choose and catch the fish.

Flies Fly Fishing
What is the difference between the sizes of fly fishing flies?

A website shows "sizes 8-12". What does this mean and what should I use for trout?

I think it has to do with weight and size but which way does it go. The higher number...... or the lower the number?

The size of a fly fishing fly is, as you have noted, indicated by a number. The smaller the number, the LARGER the fly. Most trout dry flies run in sizes from 12 - 18, although midges can go down as small as 22 (a real eye-strainer when you are watching them float down stream). Streamers may run larger for trout, say a size 6 or 8 wooly bugger. Your best bet for selecting the right size is to find a book or website that has a hatch table. Most of those will give you the size of the fly that most closely approximates the size of the bugs in that hatch for a specific region during a specific time of the year. A good example of this the "Trout Stream Insects - An ORVIS Streamside Guide" by Dick Pobst. You should also check out the Field Guide "Guide Books" posted on Cabelas.com. Those provide some very helpful information for the starting fly fisher. Good luck and tight lines!
