Fly-fishing, a fun sport

Fly-fishing is an ancient angling method especially effective in catching trout and salmon. This distinct method of angling uses artificial flies to lure or excite fish. Fly-fishing helps anglers catch the fish easier than the traditional way.

There are two basic forms of fly-fishing, dry flies and wet flies.

Dry flies need coating with floatant in order for it to sit in the surface of the water. Dry flies are mostly effective in upstream and moving water. Dry flies help anglers' spot where fish resides like pools and pocket in streams. Thus, it is easier to detect them and catch the fish.

The use of wet flies is beneath the surface of the water. Wet flies are nymphs, lures and true wet flies. It works as effective as dry flies except that in cases where weeds are many and almost touching the surface, wet flies blends with the weeds and thus may not be as effective as the dry flies.

Fly-fishing was developed in the 19th century, dry fly technique is very effective especially for slower and clearer rivers.

This is because weeds in rich rivers tend to grow closer to the surface, thus traditional wet fly fishing is almost ineffective. Dry fly fishing is thus useful by keeping the fly and the line floating on the surface. This makes fish excited and aggressive; the angler can then spot the location of the fish and in turn catches fish easier.

Later developments of fly-fishing made this concept as basis, thus in the latter part of the 19th century, anglers develop love for fly-fishing. This gave birth to fly-fishing, the sport among its aficionados.

Various parts of the United States host fly-fishing sports such as in the waters of Catskill Mountains of New York and the provinces of Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, British Columbia, Alberta and California.

Anglers in North America also develop various literatures pertaining to fly-fishing. The sport of fly-fishing and all these literatures gave North America the reputation of being the birthplace of dry fly-fishing, specifically the City of Calgary, Alberta. It is arguably one of the world's best trout rivers, thus it remains to be the epicenter for the Western Fly Fishing in North America.

Various other states in America keeps the growing number of fly-fishers such as Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Arkansas. The growing number of anglers that are drawn to the sport of fly-fishing keeps the popularity at its peak.

Dry or wet fly-fishing, whichever is more effective in the rivers where you fish will help keep the sport exciting. It may not be long that other countries will learn to love the sport and make it a globally loved sport.

How does fly-fishing work?

Fly fishing uses longer and lighter rods; sizes vary from 2m (6 ft) for fresh water and up to 4m (14 ft) for salt water fly-fishing. Weight for fresh water rods are between two to five ounces.

Popular types of casts in fly-fishing follow its variety in situation specifics. Anglers uses common cast when the angler whisks the fly rod forward and back using his forearm and upper arm, the wrist is used to soften the motion.

The rod movement varies from 10 o'clock position to 2 o'clock position without touching the ground. Anglers do this to load the rod tip with energy and to travel the fly line creating distance and control; they call this motion false casting.

False casting needs to be done to excite the fish or make it aggressive enough so that when the fly touches the surface, it will be sure that the area where the fly touches is where most of the fish are located and thus will be easier to spot and catch them.

Whether you are a fly-fishing aficionado for outdoor excitement or having fun with your family, using the proper equipment will help you develop love for the sport. Keep it exciting and enjoy fishing at its finest in most popular fly-fishing locations in the country. There are many locations, thus you will not have a problem in spotting nice locations for you and your family for this wonderful outdoor adventure.

New fly rod and reel?? Help!!?

I need a suggestion for a rod and reel that will really wow my boyfriend for Christmas that is in the $350 range. He is current using a redington red start..from what I have found this is a really inexpensive rod for beginners.

I have only been one time, and loved it! Needless to say, I still know nothing about the equipment, other than what I have read. He is very good and I want to get him something that will play to his abilities. He is comfortable with a 9' rod and he really only has fished for rainbows, both small and large, and small mouth bass.

Please help! I'm running out of time and I don't trust sales people icon smile Fly Fishing Sale

The Red Start is a beginner rod, but it is also a very good rod. You can get him a nice new reel to with it like one of these: http://www.orvis.com/store/product.aspx?pf_id=72ER&dir_id=758&group_id=768&cat_id=7908&subcat_id=7909 in the $129 range. A rod is somewhat a personal matter depending on his casting style, likes and dislikes. You could end up buying him a rod that isn't right for him and he ends up not using/liking it. I think you're safer sticking to a nice reel and maybe adding in a gift card that he could use toward a rod that he really would want or has been dreaming about.

Thirty-five years ago my girlfriend at the time bought me a fly rod for Christmas. It was a rod she knew I wanted, but couldn't afford. I still have the rod. And, I married the girl icon smile Fly Fishing Sale

How to Tie a Fly for Fly Fishing : Tools Used to Tie Flies: Basic Fly Tying Instructions

Steelhead Fly Fishing
I saw this Fly Fishing rod on ebay,is it a good rod?, im fishing steelhead and salmon?

Im fishing salmon and steelhead, in the credit river, missisauga. BTW does anyone know any good spots to fish there?

http://cgi.ebay.com/Crystal-River-Fly-Fishing-Freshwater-Rod-Reel-Combo_W0QQitemZ270281375836QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item270281375836&_trkparms=72%3A1207%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

From the description, it doesn't mention anything about backing. I fish Steelhead as often as 3-4 times a week and even a average Steelhead can run you into your backing. If you decide to purchase this, and it turns out not to come with backing...get some and re-rig your outfit. Also the rod is a little too short for a river like the Credit. I would suggest something a bit longer. Longer length aids in line control and mending. I have two pre-rigged outfits on my website if you decide not to purchase that particular one. They come ready to fish including backing. See my profile for a link to my website. I'll be glad to help you out any way I can.

Fly fishing is a very old form of fishing and requires delicacy and precision of catching fish, fly fishing, but not limited at all to catch fish small. You can catch fish almost any type of fishing, but most fishermen use flies for salmon and trout fishing.

The best thing you can say historians, was the first record in the second century AD in Mesopotamia. The flies are tied using chicken feathers and were cast for a period of six feet in line with the pole that was almost as long. Modern day fly fishing configurations are indeed similar, although they have definitely made progress.

Fishing rods are generally more of a normal fishing rod and very light. The line is heavier than you might expect, and aid in the casting weight. For the most part, the reel owns the line and not online no tail when you cast out, as with many other bar and reel combinations.

When fly fishing, fisherman cane press a portion of the line and essentially whips back and forth, trying to fly in front of a fish to entice the strike.

There are a variety of different flies, but most of them are very small and lightweight. They may float, sink, or be designed to stop a few inches below the surface. More than most types of fishing lures, flies are made to look like fish food to feed on reality.

The main types of flies, though there are many subgroups, are dry and emergers, nymphs, streamers, wet flies, saltwater flies, bass and panfish flies, and flies salmon and steelhead. These basic types of flies can be modified for different fishing situations and the patterns and color combinations are almost endless.

One of the most popular uses of fishing gear trout fishing. Although you do not need a configuration of fly fishing for trout fishing, many fishermen out at last go this way. Fly fishing trout flies work well, because they resemble small source of real trout food.

Guidelines recommend trout fishing to look at what kind of insects are active in which fishing and the use of flies that resemble them. The local insect population will help determine not only the type and color of the fly to use, but also whether to use a fly that float or sink.

The sport fishing of trout fishing and the fly, in general, has a reputation be hard on the wallet, but many stores offer the sports gear for beginners at a reasonable price. While arts beginner time as the level necessary to exchange skill increases fisherman, the choice of low cost equipment to get started: the fisherman can save the updates.

Tortures for Flies: Fly Fishing

Fly Fishing Tying
Is reindeer fur good for fly fish tying?

I have a reindeer skin about ten years old and I wonder if it would be worth anything to sell for fly-tying. It would be the same as a caribou skin I think.
Actually I'm thinking of cutting it up into patches to sell off. Some hair is brittle and some is not since there are guard hairs and an undercoat, but it's always been like that. It's tan in some areas, tan and gray in others and white around the edge of the pelt. The leather is still quite supple. The average length is about 1.5" but it's shorter where it is pure white. It is more brittle than regular hair though.
I just looked for them for sale and some places want like $250 for a single pelt. I paid like $15 for one in Finland and they had a stack of them two feet high. I figure I can get about 80 4" squares and sell them off for $3-$5 each.

As a material, yes, reindeer hair is perfectly fit for tying flies. As you say, a lot of people use it interchangeably with caribou hair. I'm sure it has its own coloration and would fit into some pattern just great.

I'm a little worried about the age -- hair gets brittle with time and exposure to air and UV light. Pests like moths and beetles can also damage the fur. If the hair still has a supple, waxy texture then it will work well. Pluck out a few hairs and roll them between your palms -- the hairs will bend and twist but hopefully they will not break into small pieces. Also, the hairs should be firmly attached to the hide -- they should not shed out easily. If the hairs break easily or if the hair is falling out of the hide, the value of this material will be limited, I think.

The best way to know is to take a sample of the fur to a fly tying shop or a friend who ties. If it checks out with someone who is knowledgeable, then you're set. I'd parse it out into fly-tying sized chunks. Animal hair usually comes on pieces of hide from 2-inches square up to maybe 6-inches square.

So, um, do I get a piece of hide for the answer? Heh heh.

In fly fishing, flies are generally divided into four types of artificial flies. (The flies are also called decoys, in some countries).

They are:

1 dry flies

2 Wet flies

3 Nymphs

4 Streamers

The categories of flies can cross each other. There are no strict guidelines for the classification of flies and in terms of countries, the traditions of the terminology. (Some fishermen also classify emerges as another category of flies. These sit part below the surface and partly in the water, in imitation of ephemeral things, as newly emerging.)

Dry flies sit on top of water. They imitate the insects sitting on the surface, like mayflies, mosquitoes, Caddis flies, beetles, grasshoppers, spiders and spinners name a few types. They still fished, drifting with the tide or wind, or fish with small contractions and quick throws. Experience using flies dry can be challenging as you can see the fish strike the fly. Seca are used seasonally in lakes and rivers and are generally effective when the fish feed on insects actively at the top of the water. Dry flies are normally made of light materials are linked to floating or creeps that help fly sit on the surface water. floatant an aerosol or gel is applied to the dry fly to make it buoyant. A couple of false casts to dry will also help.

Wet flies
as the name suggests that the fly fishing in the water, either. The flies can imitate small baitfish, leeches, frogs, insects crawdad and swimming. Fishing is just wet below the surface with lots dead slow contractions to recover quickly. Sometimes a shot will occur as the fly sinks. To get the background wet, heads heel weighted or effective, especially when combined with intermediate sinking line or fly.

Nymphs are very effective and a common world wide source of food in the rivers and lakes. Nymphs can be fished in the fall, drifting, and slow recovery means, directly below the surface or in the background. They imitate the underwater phase of nymphs of insects like the mayfly, nymphs of stoneflies and damselflies. Much of the trout's diet consists of nymphs in most seasons and waters. A long leader and tippet nymphing is effective, especially in clear waters or fishing.

Streamers are larger wet flies imitating bait like minnows, sculpins and food more appetizing. Streamers usually work better in the bottom and in general are quickly recovered by the largest salmon, trout and for saltwater fish. Bigger flies like streamers, can also result in a greater catch, but do not be surprised when your four inches of serpentine lands a small twelve-inch trout. Streamers can be colored artificial and have a mixture of a variety of fly tying materials.

Dry flies, wets, nymphs and streamers are effective in the right environment. The secret to get the most out of your fishing is to use different techniques and test all the time. Do not be afraid to try different types of flies and patterns, especially if the fishing is slow. So no matter which country you live in and regardless of how to classify your fly, just make sure to have several types of flies to cover all conditions for fly fishing and fish. Now you are ready to capture great!

The first recordings of the fly fishing show that this fishery was conducted by fishermen from Macedonia. It uses six foot rod and six lines foot attached to artificial flies made of a hook decorated with insect wings and red wool. Very little was written about fly fishing in recent years, but the 1496 Treaty was published on fishing at an angle. Fishermen in southern England, were in favor of dry fly fishing and wet fly considers a distortion of the poor fishing for their sport. Even Today, the English continue to carry out fly fishing in the rivers of chalk, but access to the currents is mainly through private property.

The U.S. fishermen in the Catskills in New York began to experiment with the dry fly in the late 1800s designs. It began designing artificial flies to imitate the insects that trout feed on. Some of the released fishermen fishing adventures, which served to increase interest in fly fishing even more. American fishermen were more open to experimentation in the wet fly fishing, compared to English.

The interest in fishing fly has continued to grow in the U.S. and Canada. After the Second World War, fiberglass rods were manufactured along with leaders of synthesis and line. Redfish Fly Fishing
what size fly rod do i need for inshore/flats fishing in florida, ie trout snook redfish?

going in feb, some fly tips would help too!

8-9 WT that has an aluminum reelseat.

Make sure to have a decent aluminum reel with a good drag system, (You don't want to get spooled by that 20 LB Red because you've got a "mickey-mouse" reel).

Clousers in white/green, white/gold, white/red, Chartruese, Gold and Crystal are #1,(in my opinion!).They are inexpensive and most everything, (excluding perhaps Permit or Bones), will hit them!

"Critter Flys" like Umpqua's "Andersons McCrab" or "Crazy Charlies" work well for Shallow-water Reds and Trout.

You can also try "Decievers", "Bend Backs", & "Cockroaches", Etc.

Poppers and "Foam Flys" work excellent for Trout.

If your a Fly-tying guy you can EASILY make some Clousers and save yourself a ton of money. After you lose 4-5 Clousers,(which go for about $3-$5 a piece in a Flyshop), to Spanish Macs or Trout you start thinkin' it would be cheaper to BUY a fish dinner than to try and catch one! (lol)

Realize, Reds & Trout aren't as "picky" as freshwater Trout/Salmon. Bendbacks, Decievers, Etc can & WILL work but they aren't cheap and you lose them just as quick as any other fly!

Colors: Variations of Gold, Chartruese, White, Red work well.

Hope this helps ya? Good luck!

When avid fly fishing enthusiasts are determined to catch bigger trout, fly tying becomes a passion. They often develop their own special methods and patterns that work for them over time. Some even make it a hobby of its own and try to tie flies that look so real that they have to be closely examined to see if they are artificial. As with all things, though, trout fly tying is an art form that must be learned starting with the basic techniques.

The first consideration in learning trout fly tying is the tools that will be needed. A good fly tying vise is the first piece of equipment you will need since you wonÂ’t be able to tie very well if the hook isnÂ’t held firmly. Next is a good, bright lamp to light the work area well. Others tools needed are as follows: bobbins, bobbin threaders, scissors, needle- nosed pliers, hackle pliers, bodkin/half hitch tool, and round toothpicks. As proficiency is developed, other tools that will help in trout fly tying can be added to the list, such as whip finishers that aide in tying off the fly.

The materials needed for trout fly tying will consist of some basics and items specific to the kind of fly being tied. No matter what type of trout fly tying you will be doing, you will need #8 and #10 size hooks, size 6/0 black thread, fine vinyl rib, copper wire and head cement. Other materials that are good to keep on hand for trout fly tying are red wool yarn, medium chenille in black, olive and brown, Grizzly hackle, black and green marabou, medium silver tinsel, strips cut from a plastic freezer bag, pheasant feathers of the type used for hackles on wet flies, pheasant tail feathers, bead eyes and peacock herl.

A basic technique to master in trout fly tying is controlling the bobbin. You donÂ’t want to let it flop around, getting in the way but you do want it to help keep tension on the thread. A good way to do this is to control the bobbin with the small and ring finger of the hand you are tying with and use your thumb and first two fingers of your free hand to work the material. Successful trout fly tying can depend on control of the thread and keeping it tight as you work.

Wrapping the hackle is another basic technique for trout fly tying that should be practiced often. Though there are several ways of wrapping hackle in trout fly tying, a good basic technique for trout fly tying is to take a feather approximately four inches long and strip the fluff off the quill until about two-thirds of the quill is bare. Trim the thick end of the quill off so it is easier to tie onto the hook shaft without being bulky. With your forefinger and thumb, rub the feather against the ‘grain’ until it is spiky. Tie the quill end to the shaft, fold the spiked feather in half length-wise and wrap it around the shaft three or four times so the quill is lined up against itself on the wrap but not overlapping.

There are many techniques in trout fly tying, from tying the thread onto the hook to finishing off the fly, that can be modified to suit the particular person and the type of trout fly tying being done. Each pattern in trout fly tying will have its own techniques. There are different types of flies to tie, such as dry flies, wet flies, nymphs, streamers and bucktails. Experimenting with different techniques and different types of flies will help you to find the best methods for your trout fly tying.

Don't worry if you can't even tie your own laces or all you can catch is a cold, check out Trout fishing Tip for the latest tips and information on trout fishing.

Fly Tying Crafts
a question about fly tying?

i bought silver non- weighted beads from a craft store a few days ago and when i put them on my fly that i tied (not knowing that it was not weighted) i figured i would sink well, but when i got to the stream it didnt. is there anything i can add to the bead to make it sink?

Yea, there are a couple things you can do. You can put Xink (there are other brands, too) on your leader and even fly to help get them down (I do this on all nymphs and wet flies anyway). There is also some soft tungsten putty you can get at Cabela’s or Sportsman’s Warehouse that you can put on the leader to sink it. Not knowing what pattern you tied, those would be my best suggestions and both have worked for me.
Nearly any wet fly I tie also gets at least a couple turns of lead wire around the hook before I even start to work on dubbing or any other body additions. Good luck!

If you want to add a touch of traditional gifts, here's how to make a lavender wand. But be careful ... you'll probably want to keep for yourself!

2. Take the short end of the tape and pulled down on the flowers, leaving a piece hanging on top. Then take all the rods and fold them and the flowers (so that the flowers are in and the stems are like a cage), collecting at the top.

3. Weave the long end of ribbon through the stems, more or less. You may need to maintain fixation rods to prevent equally spaced. What you get closer Page, housing winding tighter. Click on the flowers of the street or bulk sections of the band.

4. Attach both ends of the band in concert to ensure the stick.
