Fly Fishing Materials
do i have a fishing problem?

i am constantly wanting more and more fly fishing and/or fly tying materials...even if i dont have the money i still look and want...do i have a problem or am i just addicted to it?
no i dont spend necesary money...im still a kid...still at home....

Nah, it'll pass. And I know exactly WHEN it will pass. It will pass when:

...you have a stockpile of materials that you are accustomed to working on and when you have enough to tie the flies you need.

...you have the necessary tools to easily and conveniently tie the flies you need.

...you have tried all the funky and interesting materials, tools, books, etc., you see online or in the fly shop. You will sort out the things that are really useful and what is merely faddish or excessive, and you have narrowed your commonly used materials and tools to the ones you really need and use.

...you have learned most of the basic techniques and can easily tie the flies you need for an upcoming excursion.

..the novelty has worn away from this new hobby, and it's more like fishing itself (you still look forward to and enjoy it, but you're not so ga-ga about it).

Once those conditions have been met, your life will go back to more-or-less normal, and you'll just be fly tier. You might still be obsessed, but the obsession will "settle down" somewhat so you can do the other things in life that give us enjoyment -- like eat, sleep, go to the toilet, etc.

Me too!
I was very curious about this sport for some time now. I seen it done countless times.

Tried it. Failed.

People are constantly and relentlessly, with their greater patience and understanding tried to rub some skills fly fishing on me - but in vain.

I have resorted to reading for now. I decided than anything I can do, I might as well learn - even just in theory. It helps. I think my car today, "a work underway.

Let's all learn the basics. DEFINITION OF TERMS!
A brief definition of certain terms that I need to know on the fly.

What is Fly Fishing?
Fly fishing is an ancient method and distinct angling, developed primarily for salmonids (trout and salmon, mostly) and now extended to other species such as pike, bass, and carp, as well as a wide range of saltwater species.

Fly casting is seizing or holding a fly rod correctly and adopt correct positions to maintain comfort and balance. The most fundamental rule in the casting is based on how a clock looks. Your points to head up to 12.00, your cast (the tip of your rod) should return at 10:00 and forward Then at 2:00, freeing your line at the end of this motion. It is a common mistake is to dip the stem below the two positions and almost always ends line in a tangle!

Fisherman. (Has something to do with mathematics? "I hate Math!)
This would you stupid! One day you'll learn to fly fish, you'll be called a fisherman. A person catching fish or shellfish with no intent to sell, that includes people from maintaining or capturing people who practice "Catch and Release" method (highly recommended).

The Essentials - If you do not have a complete list of these products, you are NOT Fly Fishing!

Fly fishing rods are long, thin, flexible rods sometimes made of bamboo, but more recently, plastics. Fly rods tend to have large diameter eyes (or guides) spaced along the rod to help control the movement of relatively thick fly line. To help the freedom of movement required to skillfully cast with a fly rod, there is usually little or no butt (handle) extending below the reel. Although fly rods are mainly used for casting from fixed positions, they can also be used for trolling for fish.

Fishing Reel is a device used to deployment and retrieval of fishing line using a spool mounted on an axle. They are used in conjunction with the fly rod and attached at the base or the handle of the rod.

Fishing line is any cord made for fishing. The important parameters of a fishing line are its length, material, and weight (thicker, sturdier lines are more visible to fish). The refractive index is also important line with a refractive index similar to water are almost invisible to fish. The most important parameter to decide which line to use strength. This is the amount of weight the line can hold before hanging. We must balance the tradeoff between strength and visibility.

Flies as bait? Are you kidding?
Flies or artificial flies are constructed - "Linked" on a hook with thread, fur, feathers and other materials - in sizes and colors to match naturally occurring food or simply to excite a fish. And to add more confusion, the names of the flies: Wet and dry flies, nymphs, scud, eggs, streamers, steelhead, bass flies, salmon flies, and flies water salt.

You will be considered Sunglasses Fly Fisher well equipped if you bring waders, wading boots, net vest, polarized to protect your eyes and see through the reflection on the water, a hat to the harsh sun, sunscreen and dope bug (bug repellent) - if you do not want to be eaten alive by bugs before entering even a fish!

Armed with the stuff I read, I came to experience fly fishing without even going near a body of water.

Fly Fishing Magazines

Fly fishing is becoming a fast-growing sport and pastime. It is basically catching a fish by using an artificial bait or fly. Some bait is synthetic while some are made up of natural materials. There are also some people who mix the two materials together to create more attractive bait for the target fish. This is way cooler than the old way of fishing where we use worms as baits. Some just doesn't have the stomach for that. Now, with fly fishing, everybody can learn how to fish and they can basically do it anywhere with a body of water with some fish in it. Because of this growing interest that it is attracting, written materials like books are made with it as a subject. Now, fly fishing magazine is a much better reading material for fishing enthusiasts because it keeps them updated with new techniques of fly fishing and where they can basically express and share their thoughts and experiences on it. Fly fishing magazines are also good materials to get information on the fishing sites that we find more interesting. They also provide a good amount of information on the things we will need and where to get them. Shops which offer materials are keen to advertise on such magazines giving us a broad idea on what they are offering.

Fly fishing magazine is a good read not just to those who are fishing enthusiasts but also to those who want to try fishing for the first time. Just by reading a magazine, we can have an overview or a general idea on what it is all about. We can also see the resorts in our local area or anywhere in the world which have it as one of their attraction. Fish, like other things can be seasonal. In these kinds of magazines we can get an idea on what kind of fish we can get in a certain area and during what time of the year.

Written updates on techniques are made available in fly fishing magazines. Just like in fishing in cold water, we often need to use wading boots for safety and insulation. However, we can find updated products where boots now have a personal flotation device which is inflatable for deep-water streams. In magazines we can find which products to use better and where to buy them.

Other interesting materials about it are also present in fly fishing magazine. Some magazines can serve as a platform for our questions about fly fishing and other fishermen and fishing enthusiasts can help us solve our problems by providing instructions and solutions, or simply answers to our questions. With the colorful history of fly fishing and its ability to bring us closer to nature, it is not just a good pastime or hobby but also a cool way of providing food to our table. It helps us learn about nature and basically brings us to a much better understanding of creatures other than the human race.

Fly fishing reels for trolling?

Just wondering,

Since fly reels are pretty much the same as mooching reels, are they capable of being used for trolling for salmon? I'm thinking fly reels such as Sage, Nautilus etc. Thanks!

My family uses fly rods and reels for trolling every day on Moosehead Lake in Maine. You can use either floating line for the salmon on top, or lead-line for those a little deeper. Nail a nice one with your line out as far as the filler line, and hold on for one of the most fun-filled retrieves you can get!

Are you thinking of planning a fishing vacation? For the uninitiated, fly fishing is an 'old as the hills' fishing method traditionally used to catch trout and salmon. Although nowadays folks plan a fly fishing vacation to catch several other species, including bass and span fish as well as the big salt water game, such as marlin. Even sharks have been known to get hooked using the traditional fly fishing method. So, when planning for an enjoyable fishing vacation it is important to consider your options thoroughly, first and foremost!

Destination

This is an important part of the decision because it dictates technique as well as the equipment you will need to take along on your vacation. Do some homework on the destination. Find out if the water is fresh or salty - open ocean or river or lake. Before you hand over your money, make sure it has been clarified exactly what you are getting for it. There are plenty of great lodges and resorts available. It is even possible to charter a boat to dramatically boost your odds of success.

Equipment

There is quite a bit of specialized equipment needed. Of course, as you would expect, there's the fly fishing rod! Do not just consider the price of the rod. When buying a rod, the length and the weight differs depending on the territory. When fishing in deeper waters, such as the lakes and oceans, a longer and heavier rod is recommended.

The second item you 'must have' is a sturdy reel, which is used to hold the fly line. Like the rods, prices and uses will vary.

Finally, do not forget waders or wading boots because the world will be a much colder place without them, that's for sure! Waders also provide protection from slipping.

Techniques

The techniques for fly fishing will differ depending on whether the sport is being conducted in a lake, stream or a river. In general, however, fish will be found in areas where there is protection from predators, a good source of food and a slow moving current.

Many of the vendors for the various types of fishing destination spots also provide guides to augment your experience with theirs. Guided tours are frequently offered, although expect them be a little more expensive. Even so, especially for beginners, it is advisable to at least consider the option. Along with some good planning, it invariably will ensure full enjoyment of your fly fishing vacation.

here

http://www.buy.com/prod/Hodgman-Lakestream-Nylon-Wading-Shoes-Mens/q/loc/17250/200042862.html

LOL.

The size is Men's 7.

The sole is made of felt. Presumably so your feet will be more comfortable.

wading boots?

will a felt soled boot be enough protection for salt water wading
(IE from oysters, broken glass, etc...) cause theyre the cheapest ones
any links or places i can get some would help

I used them wading a creek and they worked OK

A certain amount of physical conditioning is needed to do any kind of serious wading. You will need do those 45-minute morning walks three or four times a week to get in shape. Wading in rivers is not the same as walking down to the corner store for the morning paper. For your own safety and enjoyment it pays to be fit.

For most fly-fishing situations, stocking foot type waders are the best because they are lightweight, easy to get on and off, and give better flexibility and comfort. The breathable type wader is the best for most wading situations. They are cool in the warmer months of the year and warm in colder water conditions when used with the proper wading underwear. However, I prefer neoprene type waders during the winter and late fall months given the cold weather and water conditions here in Oregon. Neoprene also gives the user the added benefit of flotation should you happen to fall in that icy cold water. It is also a very good idea to wear a float coat or some type life jacket just to be on the safe side during the colder months of the year.

Why are waders better than hip boots? Simply put, waders keep your back side dry when it rains, and there are those special times when fly fishing that the waders will allow you to get out farther from shore line. Many times waders will allow you to move to a better position so you can cast to that special place that holds fish.

Good quality wading shoes with felt soles are a very good investment. Better yet, felt soles wading shoes with studs or cleats are even better and a must when wading bedrock rivers, or rivers with large round rocks. Felts with studs or cleats will also help you avoid lower back pain caused by slipping and sliding around those smooth slimy rocks during a long day of fishing. Take my word for it; you do not want to spoil a destination fishing trip by being stove-up with lower back pain. So spend the extra bucks and invest in a good pair of wading shoes with felt soles and studs. If you now have wading shoes with only felt soles, you can purchase studded sandals or have a shoe shop replace your present felts with studded felts.

Did you know that most people fall down wading when they first enter the water? I learned this when I was a kid and my uncle did just that every time he took me fishing. He only had hip boots, and he always fell in just as soon as he entered the water. I couldn't understand why he even wore boots; they were always half full of water.

Here are a few wading tips my uncle could have used:

When starting out, take your time and get the feel for the conditions of the river bottom, the flow of the current and water clarity.

After several minutes in the water you may need to adjust your wading boot strings or sandal bindings. You don't want your feet slipping back and forth inside your wading boots; you need a solid firm footing while wading.

When you first enter the water, your steps should be about half the distance they would be if you were walking on dry solid ground. Keeping your feet apart about the width of your shoulders will also help you to maintain balance while in the water.

When you need to move down stream, side-step and keep your body parallel to the flow of the current.

Do not try to back out of the river, you must turn around and walk out just like you walked into the river. For example, if you are in the river and the current is flowing from your left to right, make your turn on your right foot, using it as a pivot point and let the current help make the turn with the left foot. Just do the opposite if the current is flowing from your right to left. Never try to turn into the current flow to make a turn.

Always take your time and be careful, if you are uncertain about your wading abilities be sure to wear a flotation device.

If you feel uneasy about wading for any reason, consider using a wading staff. They are inexpensive and will give you that needed third leg when you need it. You might even try making one out of that old golf club or ski pole you have gathering dust in the corner of the garage. Remember to wrap the wading staff tip with duct tape to prevent that clanging noise on the river bottom.

Please remember to be careful while you are on the river, do not harm our wonderful land, donÂ’t litter, and please practice catch and release for the next generation.

Although the act of wading is as simple as walking in many respects, having water rushing against you while you're walking can be a wild experience. I've had people tell me how weird it feels to walk through water up to your crotch in waders, and I suppose this would be a strange experience if you've never experienced it before. To me its second nature, but I do spend quite allot of time wading.

Let's start with your waders, unless of course you like to go o' natural and just put on a pair of shorts and jump in. There are two main types of waders. Neoprene and breathable. I personally prefer breathable waders as part of my fishing gear, but it's really a judgment call. Both types have their strong points. Waders either come with boot bottoms or stocking foot bottoms. The stocking foot waders require that you purchase a pair of wading boots as well. I personally opt for this route, because of comfort, but again it's a judgment call. In my opinion, it's a great idea to have felt on the soles of whatever type of waders you choose to go with. The felt helps with traction on wet and slippery rocks.

The most important thing to remember is to try to always keep in contact with the bottom. You want to have a stable foot hold before taking a step. This becomes easier and easier with practice and before long will become second nature. Waders with felt soles on them will help your grip tremendously, especially on slippery rocks. The felt soles help with gaining stable foot holds as well.

As the depth of the water and current increases, smaller steps will more than likely become imperative. Once I get to about waist deep I start to more or less shuffle my feet. That way I'm never actually picking up a foot. This way I have constant contact with the bottom. That way the current can't get "under me" and sweep me off of my feet and down the river.

Another important tip in heavy current is to "work with" The water. You're natural tendency is to try to fight the current, but this can have very wet results. Let the current push you downstream as you move across the river. In particularly heavy current, I will sometimes end up two hundred yards downstream of where I started. But I get across without taking that wet and wild ride on my back. Just remember the phrase "work with the water", and don't try to fight the water. If you attempt to fight the water, especially in deep fast current, the water will win.

If you keep these tips in mind it should be able to avoid taking that wet and wild ride on your back that I spoke of earlier. Soaking yourself to the bone has to be one of the worst ways to end an otherwise perfect fishing trip.

Beginner fly fishing courses are a fantastic way to be introduced to the exciting world of fly fishing and fly tying. Perhaps you've driven by your hometown streams and noticed anglers wading and casting to trout. Maybe this looked fun and interesting to you, but you don't have the faintest idea how to cast a fly and actually get a trout to eat it. Then there's that dang fly line you'll have to keep from wrapping around your feet so you don't trip and become a little more acquainted with the fish than you really want to be. If this is the case, a beginner fly fishing course might be just what you need. Here's what you can expect.

If you're a fly fishing newbie, one of the most important skills to master is learning how to cast. It's really not that hard, but it does take practice and will feel awkward at first. The good news is you don't have to be able to cast hundreds of feet to catch trout. Accuracy and being able to control your line on the water will be more important than distance in most fishing situations. Because casting is such a vital part of successful fly fishing, most beginner fly fishing courses will focus on this aspect. However, there is much more to learn if you want to catch fish consistently.

Besides learning how to cast, you'll also need to learn a thing or two about how to think like a trout. A good instructor will give you insight into how to read water to locate trout as well as give you a basic run down of how trout feed and the type of insects you'll want to imitate with your flies. You'll also be taught how to rig up your fly rod and how to attach a leader to your fly line and tippet to your leader.

With thousands of fly patterns to choose from, a good beginner fly fishing course will also teach you about flies and how to determine which flies should be used in any given situation. Oh, and let's not forget your accessory gear like waders, wading boots, and a fly vest.

The best way to learn how to fly fish is through hands on practice like you'll get by joining a fly casting class. However, many beginner fly fishing courses are expensive and can leave you with many unanswered questions. A great alternative is to look online for instructional ebooks that can help you fill in any gaps your instructor might leave out. This is also a great way to learn on your own which can be both challenging and extremely rewarding at the same time.
