Fly Fishing Lessons
how to start fly fishing?

I want to start fly fishing but do not know how. What is all the gear I will need to start. Is there any where I can take lessons in SE PA or any other ways I can learn. Also wear should I go fishing?

Big question, hope I can help.

1) I would get a good book - "Fly Fishing, Learn from a Master by Bill Mason is an excellent book to get you started. It will explain all the gear, casting, flies, knots,
how fish feed, how to read water, and much more.

2) In SE PA I would advise that your fisrt rod be
a 8' 5wt, moderate / moderate fast action. St Croix and Reddington both make decent rods for under $100
You can get a decent flyreel (Cabela'a Prestige Plus,
Pflueger Trion, for example for under $100)
Flyline: I would advise Scientific Anglers Mastery Headstart ($ 44) in weight forward - this is a good beginning flyline with more weight up front so you get a better feel of the rod loading.

3) You do have resources available - here is a link to your Trout Unlimited Chapter:

Also, there is a flyshop on the Little Lehigh,
(off of Hatchery Road in Emmaus). The fellows who run it may be able to give you some good advice.

Cabela's in Hamburg and Nestor's in Quakertown
are 2 places worth visiting, most employees in the fly area are fly fishermen and will take time to help you
in selecting your gear, and answering your questions - classes may even be available.

Some good streams in the area include the Little Lehigh in the Allentown area, Tulpahocken in the Reading Area, Falling Springs near Chambersburg.

Good Luck to you, and may I say, that most fly fishermen that I have run across over the course of many years are always willing to help a new fellow out.

Tactical Pike Fishing - A Review
Most people, (according to the fly leaf) even those who have little or no contact with wildlife, are enthralled by natural history films showing swooping falcons, pouncing polar bears or striking snakes. However, many of those who prefer to experience such raw natural events first-hand go fishing.

Fly Fishing need good tippet line in 6x or 7x?

I was fishing this weekend in a extremely clear stream. You could count the rocks on the bottom and see the Trout from 40 ft away. I was using dry fly's and had a ton of looky loos that turned away at the last second. I was using Scientific Angler 4x trout tippets. The guy a the local Trout shop said I need to move down to a 6x,7x, or even 8x because of the clear water. What tippet line do you trust in this weight? The Trout are pretty good size as I caught one brown that weighed 4 lbs and one rainbow that weighed 2 lb.

Tippet choice is always a trade off. You sacrifice strength for stealth and vice versa. Heavier tippet also tangles less but can cause line shadows and scare away the fish. Moving to 6x or 7x is a good move to try in clear water with line-shy trout, although 8x is way too delicate to consistently catch 4-pound browns. The smallest I generally go is 6x. I use #22 flies with 6x and I don't have much problem. Haven't snapped my tippet in I can't remember how long. What brands do I trust? Pretty much all of them -- lately I've been using Frog Hair, Orvis, and Climax, mostly because I like the design of the spools and the way they handle.

I want to take issue with your local fly shop guy, though. If you were getting looks at your fly, the fish weren't exhibiting line-shy behavior. When your line is scaring the fish, they panic and scatter. They see the line, its shadow, or the dimple in the water, and they'll take it for a threat above them. When that happens they go DOWN, or they swim off fast.

What you were seeing is clear-water refusals. On clear and/or slow water, where the trout can carefully examine the fly, you have to up your game on fly choice, not tippet choice. You have to switch flies often and you have to be VERY aware of the forage you're trying to imitate.

Think about it -- the water's clear and slow. A potential meal floats by. The trout rises and slowly drifts along with the fly, making sure it's something he wants to chow down on. If it looks wrong in any way, the trout has the luxury of waiting for the next offering. This is not necessarily because the fly is suspicious that it's an artificial (though some trout seem very suspicious) or sees your tippet. It's often because the trout simply doesn't want to eat anything that's not food, and there's generally a lot of stuff on the water that may look like food but that is not food -- cottonwood seeds, duck feathers, bits of leaves, etc.

So, I'd make sure you've got the right fly. Match the hatch and match it GOOD. Use spent, cripple, and emerger patterns as part of your attack, and change flies often. A fish that refuses one artificial will probably refuse the next one.

If you can't do that, I'd try fishing riffles and faster water. In these areas the fish have more trouble seeing the fly and less time to make the choice to rise. Bigger fish have learned that foraging in clear, slow water pays off, so you might get smaller fish in faster water, but if you can't dial in your imitation, you'll have to move to water where the fish are less selective.

Growing up in the inner city Salmon were the end all and be all of big fighting fish for us. Humber river was the first place we discovered them. We used to take the subway there everyday after school when the salmon were running. We used to use marshmellows thinking that they loved to eat them, soon I realized that the marshmellow just floated off bottom enough that the fish would breathe the bait in rather than eat most of the time. Once I realized this sad fact salmon fishing became a little boring to me. Until one day in high school I started chucking around an old Mepps in the lower part of the Humber River hoping to connect with a Pike. On this day I got giant hit and thought I had the pike of a lifetime on until a saw 20 plus pound salmon with the spinner hanging out the side of its mouth. I was so excited that the fish actually hit the bait. It was this fish that sparked that old flame for "The King Of The City". Since then I have discovered that they will hit all kinds of baits if you time it right.

Every year there is a time he when the Salmon come from all over Lake Ontario and bunch up in river mouths in cities across Southern Ontario. I never miss this magical time when the giants of lake Ontario are willing to whack baits with some weird type of instinctual rage, lol! You know what I'm talking about if you have ever felt a salmon destroy your bait on a retreive, if you've never experienced this you are truly missing out. And yes these fish can and do destroy your baits often enough. I have had fish bend my split rings straight, bend my hooks straight and pull the wiring right out of balsa would crankbaits, its unbelievable and I love it, lol!!!

The key to catching these bullies is the water temperature. If the water is in the mid 60's and lower you have an excellent chance at connecting with a real "Sow Cow". When the water is in the high 60's and higher you may see fish every where but getting one to bite is another story.

Another factor to consider is the water clarity. If the water is like chocolate milk you can forget about hooking one legally with a lure. The clearer the water the better it is for the most part but there have been times in stained water where we have pounded them.

As for equipment, I like heavy gear. I like using 7′6″ St. Croix Tournament Legend MH flippin' sticks for chucking giant spoons, swimbaits and cranks. These rods are awesome because the tip is softer than most fippin' sticks on the market. This softness lets crankbaits wobble nicely and also allows you to muscle fish in without breaking off. Despite its soft tip the rod has a ton of backbone that lets you power them in and tire them out before they spool you. The reels I'm using are Cacutta's, Chronarch's and Curado's. I've been spooling the reels with 17-20lb Berkley XT for Crankbaits and Swimbaits. When spoon fishing 20lb Power has been the number one performer.

When the water has been on the warmer end of the preferred temperature spectrum spoons have out produced Cranks for the most part. The most successful retrieve that has been working with spoons has been the slow and steady retrieve. However the jig and flutter retrieve has had its days so don't be affraid to experiment. Every spoon on the market can work but the ones that have worked best for me are Williams Trophy Takers, Glow Cleos, big "no name" five of diamonds glow spoons and Northern Kings (great for the jig and flutter technique).

Crankbaits have worked best also on a slow and steady retreive. But there have been time with Husky Jerks and Rogues where the jerk, jerk, pause has killed them! We have caught them on almost every type of Crank you can think of. Here is a list of some of the baits that I have caught them on: Rapala Taildancers, Rapala J13's, Rapala Risto Raps, Rapala Shad Raps (one of my best days ever was on this bait in a firetiger pattern), Rattlin' Raps, Bill Norman bass crankbaits, Rattlin' Spots, Bomber long A's in deep diving and shallow diving, Husky Jerks, Rattlin' Rogues, Wally Diver's, Wally Minnow's, Fat Free Shad's, Reef Runner's, Fast Trac Minnow's and the list goes on, lol!, oh yeah I've even caught one on a spinnerbait near the Toronto Islands! Some days I just keep changing lures, sometimes you'll catch one and then nothing until you switch lures. Switching baits often can really pay off at times but make sure you have a quality snap that won't bend on you. Overall I like Crankbait fishing for salmon better than spoon fishing because they tend to smash Cranks harder! When night time sets in I use glow tape on my Cranks so the fish can see my bait better. I recharge the tape with my camera flash every now and then. I do the same with the glow spoon's.

I'll be out there tonight because the water is cooling off at the moment and I gotta' hunch that the Cranks will have the block on fire! Hope to see you out there.

Peace T

Passion best describes Taro Murata. Introduced to fishing at the age of 3 by his grandmother, Taro's love of fishing remains unchallenged!

Growing up in downtown Toronto, Taro had limited access to rural fishing experiences. Taro then began exploring and fishing every body of water that was accessible in downtown Toronto. He challenged the myth that good fishing was only found in northern locations. Taro's experiment of fishing urban waters quickly proved to be an overwhelming success! This philosophy of fishing urban waters even influenced where he went to university! Talk about passion!! He researched various universities that didn't meet his criteria of being next to a body of water until Taro chose Carlton University in Ottawa. His decision for going there?, "because it's located along the Rideau River and the Rideau Canal!" He quickly proved his theory correct once again. His enthusiasm and passion for fishing quickly spread across campus introducing the sport to a new generation.

After completing university, Taro found himself teaching English in Hong Kong. Surrounded by water, fishing was never far from his mind. It was during this time that Taro began to combine his love of fishing with his natural ability to teach. Taro's passion and energy transformed fishing into an art form! He wanted to spread the word that you could catch fish in urban waters! Taro has taken this philosophy all over the world; from monster Sea Bass in Hong Kong to Stripers in the Bronx!

Taro created Fish City TV to introduce urban fishing to the masses. He wants to share his wealth of knowledge with the hope that they too will be inspired! Like Taro always says, "get fish or die trying!" Taro is also a top ten tournament angler, a full time sport fishing guide, http://www.fishcitytours.com

Would the SA mastery series wf-9-f steelhead line turnover my pike/saltwater flies ave 2/3 inhes on 1/0 hooks?

would this line work if modified ie cut the front taper back and/ or use polytips?

If your using a wf 9wt line you cant modify it into a a taper, i also don't think there is any need for poly leaders on a 9wt outfit anyway. Scientific anglers steel head line is a good line for good turnovers anyway so all i would advise is a tapered mono filament leader and a good fluorocarbon tippet, if its a floating line there is no need for poly leaders, although they do have an advantage on intermediate and sinking lines. Don't do anything to the line and you will get some good distance casts out of it. If your getting better at casting use a DT line as this will increase your distance.

Sports like any other recreational activities require both mental agility and physical strength. But like any sport of all, each athlete needs a good team to function well. A tennis player has experienced three or more rockets in his tennis bag whenever you go to practice or games.

In the case of fishing or recreational fishing or fishing just for fun, you always have a good team to get better every time you grab the bar immersion in water.

People who come to fish or fishing does not really think that everything you need in the fishing rod, line, reels and bait bucket. But the truth is there So every good fisherman knows. His gear while fishing, includes everything in your tackle box has all the tips for a good catch.

If you're new to fishing, do not be discouraged if you find your tackle box incomplete in comparison with an experienced fisherman. Put everything in a tackle box requires years of experience in finding the best combinations of material to make a good tackle box. To get started, just to have a decent team and build from there.

If you're really into fishing, the time comes to make you feel as some teams fill their tackle box fishing. To begin with, is good that you should buy a generous supply of hooks of different sizes, then the fishing line and weights.

In the fishing line, make sure that the line is of adequate size to deal with fisheries specific. Weight may be composed of different types of metals, but the weight of the girl he was very discouraging for those who are highly toxic. In addition, make sure it is heavy enough to sink your bait.

Additional equipment such as lures come in different shapes, colors and sizes. But most fishermen prefer to make appeals on their own. Lures are important to capture the attention of fish.

Buy things to fill your tackle box can be very interesting, but need not be expensive.

How long will my fly line last?

I just bought some scientific angler fly line. I was wondering if i should put it one now or like in may when i actually go fishing? I just wanna know if i should keep it in the box until May or will it matter?

You can put in now if you'd like. The line will last a relatively long time if you don't damage it by stepping on it and things like that. Keep it clean as per the manufacturer's recommendation and don't leave it baking in your vehicle. Line cuts kill a lot of lines, so be careful should you get a tangle or wrap your leader/tippet around the line. I've also seen a fair share of lines trashed by cigar and cigarette burns

Trolling reels are normally used for big game in the open sea-water trawling. Trolling is the process of dragging the bait and lures behind a moving ship, which is a productive way to locate schools of fish migration. The reason being, when a boat trolls on a bench Fish, the watch and shock surface emulates a ball of bait. This triggers the feeding instinct of many marine species and immediately sends the forefront of the school to investigate the commotion, with the rest of the herd following. As the most aggressive fish in schools trying desperately to continue this shock, drag lures, jigs and lures are the first indication of a meal that intersect. The charges against him carelessly, inhaling what appears behind the fish as vulnerable, trying desperately to catch up the rest of the pack.

Once one of the lures trolling lures or inhaled, drag reel begins to sing with thrust coil creating a loud noise that alerts the fisherman to prepare. This sends fishermen on a screenplay of his team, shouting "hook-up which immediately makes the captain to fly it in neutral to stop the boat. While the dynamics of the boat is the boat forward, the team begins to throw live bait, either in pieces or balls in total. For now, the rest of the school migration has reached the noise and met with the lure of the bait, sending in a feeding frenzy.

However, a gap is wider not always the result of a hook-up while trolling. When the fish have been reduced, or when conditions are far from ideal, is lagging behind in producing the most catches, the feeding frenzy after the controlled until the fish. In those days, it is essential to troll land each fish and have the right equipment is essential to achieve this goal. Trolling Rod and Reel Combos combos are more expensive on the market today. Because of its importance in locating schools of fish roaming in open water, manufacturers such as Shimano ®, Penna ®, Daiwa ®, Okuma ® Accurate ® and incorporates the best materials and technologies to ensure strength and durability in producing the best fishing reel capable treat record trophies.

Trolling reels are usually found in the drive lever. In these types of fishing reels, pressure drag is adjusted with the slide of a lever located on top of the coil to the right. Designated trademarks, or similar to freespool, strike and are presented in full rolls and the number Penna International ®, Shimano ® and Twin Draga Tiagra ® reels drag Acurrate saltwater. Most models come later in a two-speed version, with two different gear ratios that suit different needs. The train line high is to earn as much as possible each turn of the handle, the sacrifice in power and torque. Arts weak, on the other hand, provides high torque and, instead, sacrificed the opportunity to recover a considerable amount of line per crank. When properly used, both devices are designed to maximize the chances of quickly and effectively Scale-busting fish size landing.

The most remarkable difference in a coil is lagging behind the two rings located on top of all drag fishing reels. These rings are part of the structure and maintain a large amount of force. Straps are attached to the trolling through these rings, harnesses big game and sometimes a backup rod and reel combo, a common practice in fishing boats in San Diego long distance for large bluefin and yellowfin tuna. Trolling reels are so strong and powerful, I even saw the fishermen cut engagement rings diamonds and will even make custom frames for easy access to the queue and use spools and spools of trolling with live bait. I do not recommend this practice, as much of the last reels Drag Star Classic have the same goal.

With high prices fuel at sea sailing in the waters can be very expensive. Therefore, each serious big game fisherman should consider the best href = "http://spinningreels.com/store/saltwater-tackle"> versus seawater when available it comes to their arsenal. Water Combo salt proper maintenance can make a difference in coming home with a trophy of his life, or going home skunked, carrying an empty bag.

I have been fishing for over 20 years of my life and hope to continue to do so for the next 30. I have dedicated myself to sharing what I have learned through those years in the hopes of promoting this popular outdoor recreational activity by providing commentaries and reviews, video tutorials, fishing tips and more. Scientific Angler Fly
I would like to know what a fly rod called scientific angler bought in the 1960's would be worth? It's 8' 1" .

I found this fishing rod in my husbands closet after he died. It is in cloth cover and in metal tubing. It is a system 6 with a line weight of #6. It is in almost perfect condition. We had three daughter's who have no interest in fish, so I thought I would sell it, but don't know where to start.

Scientific anglers are more famous for their fly lines being of excellent quality, they haven't made many rods except a few, they are a good make and you should get about $50-110 for it, possibly more if its a limited edition or if its in good condition and a collector wants it. Its a shame no body wants to use it but these things happen. Try eBay i would put a reserve on it of a minimum of $80 if its in good condition.

Scientific Anglers

What Fly fishing line and reel should i get?

The pflueger automatic reel, the marcus caddis Cc65 fly reel, the scientific anglers L2L reconnect 9' tapered leaders or the maxima leader wheels
Well the difference in the reels are only about 10 bucks apart on sportsmansguide.com but im a beginner so i just want some cheap stuff that will at least work and the reelz are only 26 and 36

Well, I hope I don't ruin your plan, but I have a couple recommendations.

First, I would avoid the Pflueger Automatic reel, not because of the brand or model, but because the "convenience" of automatic reels is heavily outweighed by their tendency to malfunction and the control you give up by using them. Stripping line and occasionally having to reel in a pile of line is just not that difficult, especially after you fish for a month or so. Trust me -- this is the sort of automation that may look attractive if you don't have experience, but I predict that if you get one you'll be looking for an ordinary reel before too long. The Marcus Caddis Cc65 -- I couldn't find any info on that and I've never seen one, so I can't help much there. However, if it's another automatic reel, just skip it. There are numerous entry-level reels that are of high quality and will get the job done, including the $30-$50 Scientific Angler reels.

Second, I would avoid the L2L system and any other "connector" system. Just get a booklet that shows how to tie knots and learn them. Here's a website with some great illustrations:

http://www.killroys.com/knots/knots.htm

The surgeon's knot will replace your line-to-leader connector, and it's almost as easy to tie as it is to use those connectors. You have to know the clinch knot anyway in order to tie on flies, so just learn the surgeon's knot and add more knots to your arsenal as you go. After you tie a knot for a day's worth of fishing, you'll never forget it.

The problem with connector systems is that you're always running back to the store to buy that special tackle. What if you run out when you really need it? What if you get somewhere where they don't sell it? What if you go to the store one day to find that your system has been discontinued? What if you get an idea to tie on a dropper or an extra length of tippet or some other crazy notion that catches you The Big One?

Connector systems are for those who are intimidated with all the learning you have to do in fly fishing -- just get over that intimidation and use "real" gear. With knots you still have to purchase line now and then, but at least you can tie any material to any other material and you're limited only by your imagination.

I have heard good things about those Maxima Leader wheels, but I purchase leaders singly because I like a tapered leader.

Fishermen Reeling Over Red Snapper Fishing Ban
A federal ban on fishing for red snapper, one of the most prized saltwater fish, is set to take effect Jan. 4 — part of an effort to bring back the species in the Atlantic Ocean. But coastal fishing towns that rely on business from anglers say the ban could take a huge economic toll.

The word "taxidermy" comes from the Greek "taxis" for arrangement and "derma" for skin. Taxidermy grew from the tanning industry where, by the 1700s, almost every town had at least one tannery. First practiced in the 1800s, taxidermy is the art of mounting dead animals, including humans occasionally, for display. It began when proud hunters began bringing their trophies to upholstery shops to be stuffed. This is where we got the term "stuff animal," although most professional taxidermists would take exception if you called their work "stuffing" instead of "mounting."

Taxidermy is a controversial practice, particularly when the dead animal is used as a trophy, and it appears to be in decline in modern culture. Still, most of the business caters to homeowners, though many taxidermists prepare animals for museums, scientific labs, and zoological displays. To be a taxidermist, one must be well-educated in the areas of anatomy and dissection, painting and sculpture, and tanning.

Because the process of taxidermy relies on having a solid structure with which to work, the practice is usually limited to animals with backbones. In rare instances, taxidermists has involved other creatures like insects, a much more complicated task.

Since the early 20th Century, taxidermy has progressed as a science and an art. Since the goal is to preserve the life-like qualities of an animal, taxidermists continuously seek to improve their skills and procedures, and technological advances have contributed greatly to the profession. If you are a sportsman and want to have your catch mounted, you need to know how to prepare your animal properly to assure your taxidermist can achieve the most life-like treatment possible.

A common technique taxidermists use is freezing the animal. Using a large freezer, similar to that used by butchers, they freeze the animal carcass completely. Once a hard freeze is achieved, the skin is removed and set aside to be tanned later on. The animal's tissue, muscle, and bone are then coated with plaster of Paris, creating a cast of the animal from which a foam sculpture is made. The skin is tanned and then placed on the foam sculpture, and other elements like glass eyes and false teeth are added to create a life-like effect.

A branch of taxidermy, known as "rogue taxidermy," creates fantastical creatures. It is the art of preparing animal-like replicas of animals that do not in fact exist. Their customers are often museums of the bizarre and unusual, and they play on the buying public's vivid imaginations. Thought to be the creative entertainment form of the art, rogue taxidermists need the same set of skills as their more worldly counterparts.

Akin to rogue taxidermy, crypto-taxidermy tries to create or re-create animals that may exist or that have long gone extinct. Examples include woolly mammoths and dinosaurs used by natural history museums. Based on skeletons discovered by archeologists and anthropologists, crypto-taxidermists create life-like forms used in scientific study and education.

A form of taxidermy that was popular in the Victorian era of the 19th Century is called anthromorphic taxidermy. In this form, mounted animals were dressed and displayed as if doing human activities.

Hunters take their kill to taxidermists in order to preserve that moment of victory when they took the animal down. Common especially among big game hunters, they use the meat for food and safe the skin and fur for trophies. Another popular approach is to have a part of the body, like the head, mounted for display.

The stereotypical idea of the "Great White Hunter" popularized by Hollywood brings to mind whole rooms filled with large complete animals posed in challenge or combat. Elephants with trunks raised and tusks bared, giant Grizzly bears poised for attack, and large cats ready to pounce on their prey are popularized, but rare, taxidermy results. The serious professional taxidermist is a highly-skilled artisan.
