Flies For Fly Fishing
Help with tying flies to leader in fly fishing?

I'm not too good a tying flies to leader on my line and I was wondering what a good amount of leader to lose in process.

Any help will help of course!

http://www.animatedknots.com/indexfishing.php?LogoImage=LogoGrog.jpg&Website=www.animatedknots.com

use a double surgeons to add tippet or lengthen your tapered leaders, I find it much easier than a bloodknot. use a clinch knot to tie the flys on to either leader or tippet. I can tie a clinch knot with about 1 inch or less of length of the leader lost, but this is less important to me than getting a good knot tied. if you learn to add tippet then how much is lost tying on flys becomes unimportant.

Steelhead Fly Fishing
I saw this Fly Fishing rod on ebay,is it a good rod?, im fishing steelhead and salmon?

Im fishing salmon and steelhead, in the credit river, missisauga. BTW does anyone know any good spots to fish there?

http://cgi.ebay.com/Crystal-River-Fly-Fishing-Freshwater-Rod-Reel-Combo_W0QQitemZ270281375836QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item270281375836&_trkparms=72%3A1207%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

From the description, it doesn't mention anything about backing. I fish Steelhead as often as 3-4 times a week and even a average Steelhead can run you into your backing. If you decide to purchase this, and it turns out not to come with backing...get some and re-rig your outfit. Also the rod is a little too short for a river like the Credit. I would suggest something a bit longer. Longer length aids in line control and mending. I have two pre-rigged outfits on my website if you decide not to purchase that particular one. They come ready to fish including backing. See my profile for a link to my website. I'll be glad to help you out any way I can.

Fly fishing is a very old form of fishing and requires delicacy and precision of catching fish, fly fishing, but not limited at all to catch fish small. You can catch fish almost any type of fishing, but most fishermen use flies for salmon and trout fishing.

The best thing you can say historians, was the first record in the second century AD in Mesopotamia. The flies are tied using chicken feathers and were cast for a period of six feet in line with the pole that was almost as long. Modern day fly fishing configurations are indeed similar, although they have definitely made progress.

Fishing rods are generally more of a normal fishing rod and very light. The line is heavier than you might expect, and aid in the casting weight. For the most part, the reel owns the line and not online no tail when you cast out, as with many other bar and reel combinations.

When fly fishing, fisherman cane press a portion of the line and essentially whips back and forth, trying to fly in front of a fish to entice the strike.

There are a variety of different flies, but most of them are very small and lightweight. They may float, sink, or be designed to stop a few inches below the surface. More than most types of fishing lures, flies are made to look like fish food to feed on reality.

The main types of flies, though there are many subgroups, are dry and emergers, nymphs, streamers, wet flies, saltwater flies, bass and panfish flies, and flies salmon and steelhead. These basic types of flies can be modified for different fishing situations and the patterns and color combinations are almost endless.

One of the most popular uses of fishing gear trout fishing. Although you do not need a configuration of fly fishing for trout fishing, many fishermen out at last go this way. Fly fishing trout flies work well, because they resemble small source of real trout food.

Guidelines recommend trout fishing to look at what kind of insects are active in which fishing and the use of flies that resemble them. The local insect population will help determine not only the type and color of the fly to use, but also whether to use a fly that float or sink.

The sport fishing of trout fishing and the fly, in general, has a reputation be hard on the wallet, but many stores offer the sports gear for beginners at a reasonable price. While arts beginner time as the level necessary to exchange skill increases fisherman, the choice of low cost equipment to get started: the fisherman can save the updates.

Fly Fishing Waders

Clueless about fly fishing?
Me too!
I have been really curious about this sport for some time now. I've seen it done countless of times.

Tried it. Failed.

People have endlessly and tirelessly, with their utmost patience and understanding tried to rub off some fly fishing skills on me - but to no avail.

I have resorted to reading, for now. I decided that whatever I can't do, I might as well LEARN - even just in theory. It helps. I think of my self right now as "A work in progress".

Let's all learn the basics. DEFINITION OF TERMS!
A brief definition about some terms I need to know about fly fishing.

What is Fly Fishing?
Fly fishing is an ancient and distinct angling method, developed primarily for salmonids (trout and salmon, mostly) and now extended to other species such as pike, bass, and carp, as well as a wide range of salt water species.

Fly casting is gripping or holding a fly rod correctly and to adopt the correct stance to maintain comfort and balance. The most basic rule to casting is based on the way a clock looks. Your head points straight up to 12:00, your cast (the tip of your rod) should go back to 10:00 and then forward to 2:00, releasing your line at the end of the forward motion. It is a common mistake to dip the rod below those two positions and almost always ends in a line tangle!

Angler. (Does that have anything to do with Math? I hate Math!)
That would be YOU silly! Someday, IF you learn how to fly fish, you will be called an angler. A person catching fish or shellfish with no intent to sell, this includes people keeping the catch or people that practice the "Catch and Release" method (highly recommended).

The Essentials - If you don't have a complete list of these, you're NOT Fly Fishing!

Fly Fishing rods are long, thin, flexible rods sometimes made of bamboo, but more recently from man-made materials. Fly rods tend to have large diameter eyes (or guides) spaced along the rod to help control the movement of relatively thick fly line. To aid in the freedom of movement required to skillfully cast with a fly rod, there is usually little to no butt (handle) extending below the fishing reel. Although fly rods are mainly used for casting from fixed positions, they can also be used for trolling for fish.

Fishing Reel is a device used for the deployment and retrieval of fishing line using a spool mounted on an axle. They are used in conjunction with the fly rod and are attached to the base or handle of the rod.

Fishing line is any cord made for fishing. Important parameters of a fishing line are its length, material, and weight (thicker, sturdier lines are more visible to fish). The refractive index is also important—lines with a refractive index similar to water are almost invisible to fish. The most important parameter in deciding what line to use is its strength. This is the amount of weight the line can hold before snapping. One must balance the trade-off between strength and visibility.

Flies as Bait? Are you kidding?
Flies or Artificial flies are constructed — "tied" onto a hook with thread, fur, feathers and other materials — in sizes and colors to match naturally occurring food or simply to excite a fish. And to add more confusion, the names of flies: Wet and dry flies, nymphs, scuds, eggs, streamers, steelheads, bass flies, salmon flies, and saltwater flies.

You will be considered a well equipped fly fisher if you bring waders, wading boots, vest net, polarized sunglasses to protect your eyes and see through the reflection on the water, a hat for the harsh sun, sun block and bug dope (bug repellant) - if you don't want to be eaten alive by bugs before you even catch a fish!

Armed with the stuff I read, I went about to experience Fly Fishing without even going near a body of water.

Wondering how?

Saltwater Fly Line
Would the SA mastery series wf-9-f steelhead line turnover my pike/saltwater flies ave 2/3 inhes on 1/0 hooks?

would this line work if modified ie cut the front taper back and/ or use polytips?

If your using a wf 9wt line you cant modify it into a a taper, i also don't think there is any need for poly leaders on a 9wt outfit anyway. Scientific anglers steel head line is a good line for good turnovers anyway so all i would advise is a tapered mono filament leader and a good fluorocarbon tippet, if its a floating line there is no need for poly leaders, although they do have an advantage on intermediate and sinking lines. Don't do anything to the line and you will get some good distance casts out of it. If your getting better at casting use a DT line as this will increase your distance.

Sports like any other recreational activities require both mental agility and physical strength. But like any sport of all, each athlete needs a good team to function well. A tennis player has experienced three or more rockets in his tennis bag whenever you go to practice or games.

In the case of fishing or recreational fishing or fishing just for fun, you always have a good team to get better every time you grab the bar immersion in water.

People who come to fish or fishing does not really think that everything you need in the fishing rod, line, reels and bait bucket. But the truth is there So every good fisherman knows. His gear while fishing, includes everything in your tackle box has all the tips for a good catch.

If you're new to fishing, do not be discouraged if you find your tackle box incomplete in comparison with an experienced fisherman. Put everything in a tackle box requires years of experience in finding the best combinations of material to make a good tackle box. To get started, just to have a decent team and build from there.

If you're really into fishing, the time comes to make you feel as some teams fill their tackle box fishing. To begin with, is good that you should buy a generous supply of hooks of different sizes, then the fishing line and weights.

In the fishing line, make sure that the line is of adequate size to deal with fisheries specific. Weight may be composed of different types of metals, but the weight of the girl he was very discouraging for those who are highly toxic. In addition, make sure it is heavy enough to sink your bait.

Additional equipment such as lures come in different shapes, colors and sizes. But most fishermen prefer to make appeals on their own. Lures are important to capture the attention of fish.

Buy things to fill your tackle box can be very interesting, but need not be expensive.

Saltwater Flies
Crummy river conditions make things tougher for anglers
Fishing has been a hit-and-miss venture, in large part because of river conditions. The rivers are unfishable locally, but rivers such as the Kalama and Cowlitz offer some fishing.

What kind of fishing can I do with my Fenwick Rod?

I recently received a Fenwick Spinning and Fly Combo as a gift. Specs- 7'0", 1/8-5/8 lures, 6-12lb, and it is carbon veil (I guess that would mean graphite). The spinning reel is an Abu Garcia Cardinal--8lbs/80yds. I don't know how to fly fish so the fly reel isn't of much importance to me. Anyway, my question is what kind of fish would this rod & reel combo be capable of handling? Also, can I do some saltwater striper fishing with it or will it fail? Lastly, should I get 8lb mono or 8lb braid? Thanks

That particular combo would be best used on a stream, pond or lake for small Bass, small-medium Trout, Bluegill/Crappie, small-medium Walleye, small Pike, small Carp & rough fish, Etc.

It is not designed for saltwater fishing.

You CAN use it in saltwater but eventually the reel (if not properly washed and greased frequently) will corrode. Also, that particular spinning reel is esp "light duty" for most any saltwater fishing, (period). Unless your an enthusiast of "light tackle fishing" in saltwater, don't use it for Striper. Striper tend to be "feisty" big fish and would more than likely "spool you" if you used that outfit to fish for them.

(Spool you?- take all your line.)

That outfit is designed for light tackle freshwater fishing only. Most spinning/fly combo's are designed for Trout & other smallish freshwater fish.

If I were you I'd purchase Berkley Fireline 4/10 braided line for this outfit.

Hope this helps ya? Good fishing!

All fishermen have their workhorse flies, the flies that account for most of their fish. Unfortunately they rarely think about why those flies work, why that assortment should cover most of their fishing situations.

Often fishermen simply have their favorite flies and use them without any real logic. If you take a more scientific approach you are likely to catch more fish. I've learned from experience over the past 2+ decades that the following three flies cover most salt water fishing situations, ranging from bonefish to stripers, tarpon to king salmon, and much more.

The three salt water flies I depend most on are Leftys deceivers, Clouser minnows, and snake flies. Like most fly fishermen, I seem to have 100 different types of flies, but these are the three that account for over 90% of my fish.

Leftys Deceiver:

The deceiver is an incredibly versatile fly. You can fish it on top, deep, and in the middle. It can match short thin baitfish, long thin baitfish, fat baitfish, and quite an array of other critters: grass shrimp, lobsters, and just about everything else.

I like both long and short ones, usually in the 2" to 5" range.

I tie my deceivers primarily sparsely, in all black, all white, all chartreuse, and white with a green top, but also tie a few bulky ones to imitate thicker food sources.

I tie the majority of my deceivers on size 1/0 hooks. I like to tie a few on bigger hooks, for example 3/0 or 4/0 hooks, partly because they sink faster with a big hook. I always have a few tied on smaller hooks too.

I usually add a little bit of flash on top, maybe 4-10 stands of whatever I have on hand, trimmed to random lengths for maximum effect, and sometimes top my deceivers in peacock hurl, especially the all white ones.

I've caught just about everything with deceivers, from tarpon to stripers to rainbow trout, and many offshore species as well.

Clouser Minnow:

You need a fly that sinks rapidly, and the Clouser is my choice. Sometimes getting your fly a few inches deeper makes all difference between steady action and no fish.

I like my Clousers in pink, white, chartreuse, and white with a green top. I tie most of these between 2 to 2 1/2+ inches long, but tie some much smaller and some much longer.

I tie them primarily on 1/0 hooks and I always have a few smaller sized ones, usually size 4 or 6, just in case. These are great flies for catching 'miscellaneous' species, and I tend to catch lots of strange miscellaneous species, especially when fishing in the tropics.

What won't eat a Clouser? I don't know, but I've caught fish ranging from king salmon to bonefish, and sharks to barramundi on Clousers.

Snake Fly:

I love snake flies!

Snake flies can match a wide variety of baitfish and critters, just like the flies above, and imitate a bigger bodied baitfish easier due to the deer hair head.

I trim the deer hair head pretty thin, and tie them both smallish, around 2", and bigger, maybe 4-5", in all black, all white, and with an orange head and chartreuse body.

I pretty much use white ones in the day and black ones at night. The orange/chartreuse ones, which I only tie in smaller sizes, around 2" long, sometimes work phenomenally well, although I have no idea why!

Miscellaneous Saltwater Flies:

I try to always carry a few flyrod poppers, usually "Bob's Bangers" tied on 2/0 Mustad 34011 hooks, and a few very sparse flies, often Rays Flies or Eelies.

And of course I also carry all kinds of strange stuff -- sometimes to match the prevalent bait, but usually because I just got creative when tying!

Of course knowing the best retrieves for larger fish is also important!
