Fly Fishing Materials
do i have a fishing problem?

i am constantly wanting more and more fly fishing and/or fly tying materials...even if i dont have the money i still look and want...do i have a problem or am i just addicted to it?
no i dont spend necesary money...im still a kid...still at home....

Nah, it'll pass. And I know exactly WHEN it will pass. It will pass when:

...you have a stockpile of materials that you are accustomed to working on and when you have enough to tie the flies you need.

...you have the necessary tools to easily and conveniently tie the flies you need.

...you have tried all the funky and interesting materials, tools, books, etc., you see online or in the fly shop. You will sort out the things that are really useful and what is merely faddish or excessive, and you have narrowed your commonly used materials and tools to the ones you really need and use.

...you have learned most of the basic techniques and can easily tie the flies you need for an upcoming excursion.

..the novelty has worn away from this new hobby, and it's more like fishing itself (you still look forward to and enjoy it, but you're not so ga-ga about it).

Once those conditions have been met, your life will go back to more-or-less normal, and you'll just be fly tier. You might still be obsessed, but the obsession will "settle down" somewhat so you can do the other things in life that give us enjoyment -- like eat, sleep, go to the toilet, etc.

Clueless about fly fishing?
Me too!
I was very curious about this sport for some time now. I seen it done countless times.

Tried it. Failed.

People are constantly and relentlessly, with their greater patience and understanding tried to rub some skills fly fishing on me - but in vain.

I have resorted to reading for now. I decided than anything I can do, I might as well learn - even just in theory. It helps. I think my car today, "a work underway.

Let's all learn the basics. DEFINITION OF TERMS!
A brief definition of certain terms that I need to know on the fly.

What is Fly Fishing?
Fly fishing is an ancient method and distinct angling, developed primarily for salmonids (trout and salmon, mostly) and now extended to other species such as pike, bass, and carp, as well as a wide range of saltwater species.

Fly casting is seizing or holding a fly rod correctly and adopt correct positions to maintain comfort and balance. The most fundamental rule in the casting is based on how a clock looks. Your points to head up to 12.00, your cast (the tip of your rod) should return at 10:00 and forward Then at 2:00, freeing your line at the end of this motion. It is a common mistake is to dip the stem below the two positions and almost always ends line in a tangle!

Fisherman. (Has something to do with mathematics? "I hate Math!)
This would you stupid! One day you'll learn to fly fish, you'll be called a fisherman. A person catching fish or shellfish with no intent to sell, that includes people from maintaining or capturing people who practice "Catch and Release" method (highly recommended).

The Essentials - If you do not have a complete list of these products, you are NOT Fly Fishing!

Fly fishing rods are long, thin, flexible rods sometimes made of bamboo, but more recently, plastics. Fly rods tend to have large diameter eyes (or guides) spaced along the rod to help control the movement of relatively thick fly line. To help the freedom of movement required to skillfully cast with a fly rod, there is usually little or no butt (handle) extending below the reel. Although fly rods are mainly used for casting from fixed positions, they can also be used for trolling for fish.

Fishing Reel is a device used to deployment and retrieval of fishing line using a spool mounted on an axle. They are used in conjunction with the fly rod and attached at the base or the handle of the rod.

Fishing line is any cord made for fishing. The important parameters of a fishing line are its length, material, and weight (thicker, sturdier lines are more visible to fish). The refractive index is also important line with a refractive index similar to water are almost invisible to fish. The most important parameter to decide which line to use strength. This is the amount of weight the line can hold before hanging. We must balance the tradeoff between strength and visibility.

Flies as bait? Are you kidding?
Flies or artificial flies are constructed - "Linked" on a hook with thread, fur, feathers and other materials - in sizes and colors to match naturally occurring food or simply to excite a fish. And to add more confusion, the names of the flies: Wet and dry flies, nymphs, scud, eggs, streamers, steelhead, bass flies, salmon flies, and flies water salt.

SALMON LAKE/DOUGLAS LAKE RANCH, what flies worked best?

im going fishing at salmon lake and i wanted to know which flies worked the best, their website gives a number of good working flies but i wanted to know what the people fishing liked, thanks

Is this the place your talking about

http://www.douglaslake.com/recreation/flyfishing.htm

Ive fished there some years ago, sadly only for trout, as id left my 9wt salmon rod and flies etc at home. But i know the fishing for salmon was good back then and most likely it still is. However flies change from season to season, when i was there tube flies were working well. Give the trout a go there if you get the chance, had some good fish to small dries like the Adams. fish for them on a 5 wt and use a 9wt for the salmon.

Introduction

While there are many techniques to improve your fishing, these Seven Secrets will get you on your way to a more successful fishing experience. One of the most important secrets is Scent Control. If the fish know you are there, your chances of success are diminished. You'll also want to pay close attention to prepping your leader and properly weighting your casting bubble. Retrieving techniques are also very important...if you want to catch some fish! And, we close out with a quick discussion of the best rods, reels, lines and leaders.

Scent Control

  • Fish have a very keen sense of smell. It has been proven that salmon, returning to their spawning grounds, do so by detecting the smell of where they were hatched.
  • Be very careful with suntan lotion, bug spray, or fuel. If you get these, or like substances, on your hands you must wash it off. A standard practice of mine, before I tie on a fly, is to rinse my hands in water without using soap.
  • Did you know that saliva masks human scent? I always spit on my flies before I use them. Gross, but very effective.
  • After I catch my first fish, I gently rub my fly along the side of it.
  • Another trick is to place a small piece of garlic in your fly box if you can stand the smell.
  • Crushing a few natural insects on the fly is another effective method of scenting the fly.

Leader Prep

  • The tapered leader comes coiled in the Universal Fly Casting Rig package. After is it uncoiled, it must be straightened by carefully pulling the length of it through your hand or piece of leather. Be careful not to cut yourself by gripping the leader too tight or pulling too fast.
  • If your leader is not straight, you will miss most of the fish strikes. The reason for this is because the memory of the leader creates slack, preventing you from detecting the movement of the fly at the critical moment of the strike. The importance of a straight leader cannot be overstated.

Weighting the Casting Bubble

  • If you wish to fish on the surface, fill the bubble three-quarters full of water. To fish under the surface, fill the bubble completely full.
  • To fish in deep, or very fast water, put BB-size split shot directly in the bubble through the stopper hole. I have fished with up to eight (8) pieces of shot in my bubble, and yes, BB-sized shot will fit through the hole.

Retrieving Techniques

  • Presentation, presentation, presentation. This is the key to catching fish! The Universal Fly is a large streamer, which represents a minnow. To catch large predatory fish, you must move the fly! I achieve this by using a water-filled bubble with split shot (see Secret #3) and violently jerking, or whipping, my rod during the retrieve. Most fishermen will jerk the rod, and then reel in the slack. You must learn to reel while you are jerking to achieve as much speed as possible. The mindset is this: try to keep the fly away from the fish. It is impossible to move a fly through the water faster than a fish can swim.
  • It is important to keep your rod tip down and jerk or whip in a line parallel to the ground. If you jerk up, as in jig fishing, you will bring the fly to the surface. I've said to many fishermen, "If no one is laughing at you, you're probably not jerking hard enough!"
  • Experiment with the rhythm and speed until you find what the fish want.
  • If you are fishing with a dry fly or nymph, reel slowly. However, I have caught many fish on nymphs by jerking like a madman!

Rod Types

  • Use a medium action, 6-1/2 to 7 foot spinning rod.
  • Graphite rods are best for strength, but are usually a bit more expensive. Check out eBay, Buy.com or Amazon Marketplace for the best prices.

Reel Types

  • All casting reels will work. The ideal reel is an open-face spinning reel with a minimum retrieve ratio of 5:1 (5 spool winds to 1 crank turn).
  • Fish with the fastest reel you can buy. Remember, you can always slow down if you need to.

Line/Leader Types

  • I fish with "Tectan Premium Plus". This line has a small diameter and virtually no memory. Trust me, I've tried them all. This is, by far, the best line for this type of fishing and is available at Cabela's.
  • Tapered leaders work best, because they minimize tangles. I use a 7-1/2 foot, 3x leader. Sometimes it is helpful to tie a smaller tippet on the end of the leader for line-shy fish. You can also increase the distance from the bubble to the fly this way.

I've been living in Colorado for nearly 50 years and have been an avid hunter and fisherman my entire life. For the last 25 years, I have been river fishing, trout fishing and bass fishing in some of the most spectacular places in the Rocky Mountain region.

I finally decided that it was time to share what I knew, so I started Best Fishing Secrets. I want to help as many fishermen as possible to catch tons of trout, bass, crappie, catfish, salmon, perch, bluegill -- just about every species of freshwater fish -- in the Rocky Mountains or anywhere else in the world -- with an all-in-one fishing rig.

When it comes to fly fishing in Idaho, vacations spent on the South Fork of the Snake River definitely top the list. The river starts in Yellowstone National Park and flows straight to the Palisades Reservoir via Grand Teton National Park. The South Fork is the portion of the Snake River that runs between the Palisades Dam and Henry's Fork. This is the perfect combination of big fish, great scenery, and nearby Jackson Hole lodging.

The Best Time For South Fork Fly Fishing

Fly fishing in the area begins from the last week of June to the first week of July with the appearance of the Salmon flies, Yellow Sallies, and Golden Stones. Late autumn is the favorite time to fish for many of the local fisherman since water levels are considerably lower than in the spring.

This gives anglers the chance to wade in new areas from Yellowstone National Park to Henry's Fork. The fish are ready to put up a good fight by this part of the season. In the winter, there is some shore fishing, but actually wading in the cold river isn't recommended. You will want to check the local fishing regulations to learn which portions of the river are closed.

All is not lost on the days the fish simply aren't biting. Bringing a spinning rod and reel along with a good lure will almost guarantee a successful fishing trip. The quiet days are also the perfect opportunity to get away from your Jackson Hole lodging and enjoy some of the wildlife travelling through the area. Moose, elk, and eagles are just some of the animals that peek out from the forest.

Gear Tips For South Fork Fly Fishing

Since many of the brown trout in the river weigh over ten pounds, stick to a four to five weight rod in the beginning of the South Fork fly fishing season. Tackle, on the other hand, should depend on what you see along the shoreline. Early in the season, use Salmon fly patterns such as Birds Stone and Hairy Mary on a size 4-8 hook. Nymphs such as Girdle Bugs, Stonefly Nymphs, and Black Rubberlegs can also provide you with an afternoon of aggressive fish. Fly patterns such as South Fork Sallies and Yellow Stimulators imitate the Yellow Sallies that appear at this time as well.

The later part of July and early August bring mayflys and Pale Morning Duns begin to appear. Use size 14 in July and slowly move to an 18 hook by the end of September. Try patterns such as Pink Cahill Parachute, Biot Dun, and Wooly Buggers. This is also a great time to break out the caddis like Elk Hair and Hemingway patterns. When it comes to fishing in the late fall (from August to October) think hoppers, Blue-winged Olives, and Royal Wulff in sizes ranging from 18-20.

South Fork fly fishing is some of the best in North America. The river is close to Jackson Hole lodging, Yellowstone National Park, and has plenty of large cutthroat, brown, and rainbow trout. For year-round fishing adventures, this is definitely the place to go.

Would the royal wulff work now? fly fishing?

I just started fly fishing and need to try new flies and it came in a pack. Northern New Jersey

Living where you're at right now I'd say no.
This time of year in that area your fly fishing is going to be very limited.
1rst thing in the morning until 10am you will need the following:
ant patterns - including flying ants
beatle patterns
griffith's gnats
small blue wing olives (size 20-22)
micro tan and olive caddis (size 18 and 20)

If you decide to fish the evening take some small caddis and blue wing olive patterns as well as some Isonychia (slate drake/chocolate drake)
some small sulphers and a few large stimulators just for the helluva it.

e-mail me at pheasant.tail@yahoo.com and I'll "seasonalize" you arsenal from march until november
