Fly Fishing Flies

Fly fishing is a challenging and fun activity for many fly fishermen. The challenge is to catch different species of fish. Yet, even catching a fish in fly fishing is already a challenge because it is never easy to master fly fishing. Fly fishing success has many factors. One factor the right choice of lures of fly fishing flies. These are used to imitate insects to lure fish and catch them eventually. The lures or flies may either be surface lures of below the surface lures. Common lures are the surface lures and these types of lures can catch big fishes such as the bass.

Bass fly fishing are now being done in fly fishing tournaments. The challenge is to catch many bass or to catch a bass fast. Most fly fishermen practice hard to master the perfect casting in order to create some commotion that will imitate surface animals to attract the bass. Catching bass in fly fishing is a challenge especially on strong fights on the water (bass are big and they put up a fight when they are catched). Bass are keen in waiting to pounce on their prey just as fly fishermen are keen on waiting for their fish.

The bass are easily attracted to surface flies especially if has distinct color. Most fly fishermen make their own lures when they want to catch bass. Bass fly fishing is dependent on the type of lure being used. The key to bass fly fishing success is on attracting the bass to the lures. This can be done by using dark colors such as brown, black or purple when it the horizon is dimming. Bass fly fishing is usually done when the sun begins to set because this is the time when they start to look for food because surface insects are available. Bass lures or flies can also be made using lighter colors because bass will pounce on any insect. There are insect that have light colors and making a bright colored lure or flies will surely attract the bass. Bass are after big insects but there are occasions that they are up for smaller insects which makes small flies feasible for catching bass.

Aside from the color of the flies, the movement is also a strategy to master when wanting to catch a bass. Each fly fisherman has their techniques in moving their bass bugs. They may cast it on the water without making it move on the surface for a few minutes then give it a slight twitch or movement to make bass think that it is a live insect. Bass are just waiting to pounce on their prey and it can be fun to lure them into some non-living flies and catch them easily. Bass fly fishing might seem easy but it is much more complicated when being studied.

IS IT THE SANDMAN?

On the River Dun in the Kennet Valley is the small market town of Hungerford, Berkshire. This town of nearly six thousand people marks the boundaries of South East England and South West England.

The town of Hungerford dates back to 1173 and a hundred years later it was referring to itself as a borough. John Gaunt, the medieval Lord of the manor was kind enough to allow the inhabitants of the area to fish on the River Kennet. It is recorded that the coachman of Queen Elizabeth died in Hungerford during a Royal visit.

There is an impressive history of Royal visitors. The Earl of Essex and his army spent some time in the town during the English Civil War. The Earl of Manchester's Calvary also had a stay in Hungerford though it was not by choice. They were quartered there during the war. The Kings own forces stopped by in November of 1644. William of Orange was offered the crown during the Glorious Revolution of 1688 while he was staying at the local Bear Inn.

Current history of the town includes the horrible Hungerford massacre that happened on August 19 1987. Local laborer, Michael Robert Ryan shot and murdered sixteen people including his mother. He wounded fifteen more before killing himself. This event in history is remembered as the most brutal criminal crimes involving a firearm and it led to the Firearms Act in 1988. This new act banns the ownership of semi-automatic rifles.

Hungerford still recognizes Hocktide, the annual celebration that dates back hundreds of years. The town crier gathers the Commoners to the Hocktide Court at the town hall and two 'Tutti Men' and the 'Orange man' make their rounds. Six 'Tutti girls' from the local school accompany them collecting kisses from the Commoners. The celebration of Hocktide is in recognition of when King Alfred rid the land of the Danes. Hungerford is the only town left in the country that still takes part in this tradition.

Mountain Brook

Eastern Brook Trout?

I'm headed up to the White Mountains in New Hampshire next week for vacation, I'll be fishing in the Pemigewassit River amongst some other places. Apparently there is a healthy population of Brook Trout up there. I've never fished for Brookies before, and was wondering if anyone could offer up any tips on how to land some of these pretty fish. I have both spinning and fly fishing equipment.

Stealth is the key.
Brook trout spook easily.
Since I flyfish, I'll try to give some pointers.

Even though they may spook easily, brookies are generally suckers for a well placed fly and seem to be enticed by colorful patterns. Try casting a royal coachman, adams,
Au-Sable Wulff dries or swinging Mickey Finn streamers
past likely holding areas such as undercut banks, blowdowns, corner pools and deep runs.

when working the stream, be cautious and quiet and when arriving at a spot to cast, rest the area for a few minutes
before casting.

a small flyrod such a a 7' 4 wt would be ideal.

Wulff Fly

I like the royal Wulff fly, but is it different in any way from the royal coachman?

I love to fish with the royal wulff, but a friend recommended a royal coachman, he said they work tons better, but is there a difference?

Okay, let me see if I can get this right. The Coachman is a very old fly that probably originated in Europe in the 1700s or earlier, but don't quote me on that. In any case, it's considered a "traditional fly," as in we don't know who invented it. I don't know if anyone even uses it anymore. The Coachman was basically peacock herl and brown wet fly hackle. Nothing fancy at all. An American fly tier named John Haily is the inventor of the Royal Coachman, which is a pattern that takes the old Coachman and fortifies it with red thread bands and the barred tail feathers. So, from the Coachman, an old traditional fly, we get the Royal Coachman. The original Coachman and Royal Coachman were wet flies and, like most flies of that time, they were nonrepresentational. That is, they were attractor patterns that did not imitate any one form of trout forage -- might look like a nymph, maybe a minnow, maybe a terrestrial.

Now you need to know about Lee Wulff. He is an American fly fishing innovator from the early-mid-1900s. He did a LOT to advance the art and sport of fly fishing, too much to say here, but two things he did were to make fly fishing tackle lighter and more compact, and he helped to advance the art of dry flies. He is the inventor of the original Wulff flies, obviously. The first Wulff flies were basically very high-floating dry flies, named after the main color of the materials -- White Wulff, Gray Wulff, etc. Wulff invented the Royal Wulff by basing a new dry fly on the old Royal Coachman, with the body of peacock herl, bands of red thread, and barred tail feathers. So, you could say that the Royal Wulff is an evolution of the Royal Coachman, which was based on the Coachman (which was probably based on something even earlier).

Most of the Royal Coachman flies I see in shops are dry flies, and most of the Royal Coachman recipes I see are for dry flies, or perhaps you might call them dry-wets. The Royal Wulff is and always was a dry. Do they fish differently? Yeah. Most Wulff flies are designed to ride very high on the water and are great for skittering and waking attacks. Is one of these flies "tons better" than the other? Probably not. They are both attractors and if a fish hits one of them, that same fish probably would have hit the other.

Czerwinski: Big chill, thick ice, let's fish
So is it cold enough for you yet? If you’re a fan of ice fishing, the answer probably is a resounding no. But take heart, because this latest blast of winter chill we’ve been going through may just be (pardon the pun) the tip of the iceberg.
