For more than twenty five years I've been using ultra light fishing tackle and have learned that fishing with ultralight gear is one of the most enjoyable ways to catch fish. When I use the term 'tackle' or 'gear' I'm referring specifically to the rod, reel, and line that are employed while fishing. When you downsize your rod, reel, and line, the baits and lures that you use will also become smaller, mostly out of necessity.

This type of fishing can be done for type of fish. In my opinion 'ultra light' fishing is simply matching your rod reel and line to the size of fish you intend to catch, then as your skills become better, it means catching fish larger than your gear and line would suggest. For example catching five to six pound trout or smallmouth bass while using a four foot ultra light rod and matching reel, spooled with four pound test. The same rule holds true when fishing for ten pound steelhead with a medium action rod and reel, spooled with eight pound test.

Fishing with light tackle also makes you become a better angler. It forces you to learn how to "play" your catch, rather than just winching your fish in. I'm not a fly fisherman, but one of the best quotes ever made came from the fly fishing movie A River Runs Through It. In this movie the reverend Mclean is said to have said, "Anyone who does not know how to catch a fish should be able to disgrace that fish by catching it."

To me this quote sums up ultra light fishing quite nicely. This type of fishing literally forces you to become a better angler and learn "how" to catch fish, rather than relying on some sort of luck from the fishing Gods. The bottom line is that if you use quality rods, reels, and line ultra light fishing will most certainly result in catching more fish. This is one of the keys to ultra light fishing tackle. You always want to purchase quality gear and line.

When fishing with ultra light gear that gear gets put to the test. The drag on your reel, for example, is of the utmost importance. This is why purchasing quality reels such as those made by Pflueger, is so important. How about fishing line? I've always been a fan of Stren monofilament, although any name brand manufacturer will work fine. Skimping on the cost of line is never a good idea when it comes to ultra light fishing tackle.

The same rule applies to your fishing rod. In many instances sub par quality ultra light rods have a very "whippy" quality to them. When you hold them in you hand and shake the rod tip, it feels almost as if you're holding some sort of whip. An ultra light rod should have some 'backbone' to it for quality hook sets. Although they are a bit expensive, St. Croix makes great light fishing rods that last a lifetime and perform wonderfully.

The bottom line is that light fishing tackle is the way to go if you want to catch more fish, have more fun, and become a better angler. Give it a try and find out for yourself just how enjoyable fishing with ultra light tackle can be.

For many anglers cleaning their fishing reel seems like to daunting a task to undertake, but in this article I'm going to provide you with simple direction for accomplishing the task. Cleaning your spinning reel isn't rocket science, and if you do it once a year, it will add years to the life of your reel. For example, I clean my spinning reels once a year and I've had some of them for over ten years, and they still perform like they were new!

How to clean your fishing reel is really quite simple if you follow the simple directions in this article. The first thing we need to do is discuss the items that you'll need to accomplish this task quickly and easily. I'm going to simply list the items that are needed here, then outline exactly how to clean your spinning reel. You will need the following items: a clean towel, a small screw driver (usually Phillips head), a small bottle of reel grease (or WD-40), 5 or 6 Q-tips, and some paper towels.

That's it. Those are the simple items that you need to clean your spinning reel. Now down to the business of how to clean your spinning reel, and add years to it's life. Below you will find the steps involved in accomplishing this fairly simple task.

1. Begin by removing the spinning reel from it's rod and using a couple of paper towels to wipe it off completely. We want to remove any dust, dirt, sand, or grime that might be on the outside of the spinning reel.
2. Now remove the handle of the spinning reel. The handle normally is removed in one of 2 ways. Either by removing/loosening a screw of some sort in the handle itself or by simply holding the reel and turning the handle backwards. This will remove the handle. Once removed, set the handle onto the clean towel.
3. Now make sure that the reel is laying with the screws that hold it together exposed. Now simply remove these screws (usually from 3-5) and place them next to the handle. This will expose a small plate which can now be removed. Remove the plate and set it next to the screws.
4. At this point the inside of the spinning reel should be exposed. Use a clean Q-tip to remove any visible debris on the inside of the reel. Now use your reel grease and put a couple of drops of grease on every moving gear that you see. If you're using WD-40 simply squirt a little on every gear you can see.
5. Now simply reverse the process. Put the plate back into place and screw in the screws. Before re-installing the handle, add some grease/WD-40 to it as well. Now re-install the handle.

You have successfully cleaned your fishing reel, and will never have to wonder how to clean your spinning reel again. Now you know. Eating for a healthy heart does not mean giving up everything you enjoy. Changing the sort of food that you have eaten all life may not be easy, but it is important in reducing the risk of developing heart diseases. In continuation of eating for a healthy heart 1, this is the highlight on the remaining groups of foods so that you can know how to include all in your daily healthy balanced meals.

Group 3:  Fats and oil: There are two types of fats and oil, saturated and the unsaturated fats. They all contain the same amount of calories and are composed of fatty acids. At room temperature saturated fats are solid while unsaturated fats tend to be liquid. Examples are:

Meat fat   (beef, pork, lard. Mutton, dripping).

Dairy fat (cheese, butter, cream)

Plant fat (palm oil, coconut oil)

Processed fat (cakes, biscuits. Pies, snacks, margarine)

Saturated fats increase blood cholesterol and LDL-C levels rise is linked with risks of heart diseases. So it is highly required that you reduce your intake of saturated fatty acids.

Unsaturated fats are found mainly in vegetable. It is sub-divided into monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. The monounsaturated fat is oleic acid, the main constituent of olive oil. This oleic acid is known to protect the heart by reducing the artery clogging LDL-C and then makes the blood platelets less sticky and less likely to form blood clots.

Other major source of monounsaturated fats are canola oil, nuts, and peanut oil. Research showed that eating nuts can significantly lower the amount of bad cholesterol (LDL-C) in the blood.

The polyunsaturated fats have two families, the Omega-6 and Omega-3. Omega-6 fatty acids are found mainly in vegetable source such as sunflower, sesame seeds, corn, and safflower margarine and soy oil. While Omega-3 are found in oily fish such as trout, salmon, sardine, mullet, tuna, anchovies, herring, mackerel, also in green leafy vegetable, canola, soya , rapeseed and walnut oil. It is advised to consume more of Omega-3 because fish oil is a very rich source of eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and decosahexanoic acid (DHA) which helps maintain a healthy heart. They have shown to:

Reduce blood pressure

Reduce thrombosis (blood clot) by thinning the blood

Reduce blood triglyceride levels.

So as you enjoy fish in your meals, try to include one portion of oily fish.

Group 4:  Proteins: are made up of amino acids and is required for the repair and maintenance of all body tissues, in fact it's called the building block of life. The major dietary sources of protein are all type of fish, meat, eggs, milk, cheese, beans, peas, lentil, nuts, and cereal grains. Different food contains different type of protein, so it is important to eat a variety of protein source to ensure you are getting enough from each.

Group 5:  Vitamin and minerals: these are essential part of your diet. They are the anti-oxidant that your body needs to fight off diseases. We have the fat soluble vitamins (vitamins. A, D, E, & K) while the water-soluble vitamins are all the eight B vitamins, vitamin C and folic acid. The main anti-oxidant is vitamin C, vitamin A in form of beta-carotene, and vitamin E. This helps the heart by reducing the oxidation of LDL-C, thereby reducing the buildup of fatty deposits in the arterial walls. Sources are all kinds of fruits, vegetables, corn, olive and vegetable oils, cottonseed, apricots, sweet potatoes. Most often folic acid and the B vitamins are readily available from our balanced diet. The good source includes leafy green vegetables like spinach and broccoli, cereals, rice, milk, eggs, fish, citrus fruits, potatoes, berries.

Finally drinking enough water helps to flush out the unwanted materials in the body. By making good choices in your meal and eating well, you can reduce the risk of developing heart diseases. Enjoy! You deserve the good health.

What is the best spinning rod reel combo for under $100.00?

I would like to know what would be a quality spinning rod and reel combo for under $100.00 US
I plan to fish for anything from Pan Fish to Muskie so it has to be a universal spinning combo

What kinda fishing are you planning on doing ?

UPDATE:

You might be able to have a universal combo for Crappie/light tackle Bass/Northern, but not one designed for Bluegill to Musky.

The problem- Musky lures are "heavy". Musky rods are "heavy-action" broom-handles.
Musky combo's usually use heavy-action reels like Abu-Garcia 6500.

You wouldn't want to go Crappie-fishing with a Musky-combo. It would be tough to even cast a Crappie jig with a Musky-combo. And no fun!
