Many of you are probably thinking to yourself, "I don't need to learn how to fish with live worms, you just thread a worm onto a hook and you're good to go." And do you know what, you're right. That's all you do if you want to be only moderately successful as a live worm angler. What I'm referring to is becoming something more than moderately successful as a live worm angler. I'm referring to becoming a worm angler that catches more fish than other anglers because of some simple and effective techniques. In my opinion, worm angling is as much of an art form as fly fishing has ever been professed to be, but not by just "threading" a live worm onto a hook and calling it worm fishing.
The first thing to keep in mind is the fact that effective live worm anglers present their offering in a completely natural manner. This might sound simple, and in reality it is, but the problem is that many people don't take it to heart. Here's my point. How natural does a live worm that's been "threaded" onto a hook look? That is, how much does that offering look like it would in nature? Well, since this offering doesn't look like it would in nature, don't you think that would affect the amount of bites and subsequently hook-ups that are received? I promise you that it has a dramatic effect on the amount of bites that are received.
The only way to present a live worm in a natural manner is to employ a set of gang hooks. Gang hooks are simply a pair of small hooks tied in tandem, thus enabling the angler to present a live worm outstretched, the way God intended. The set of gang hooks should be attached to the anglers fishing line using a small barrel swivel to prevent line twist, and then used as normal. One of the most effective ways to fish with live worms is to use a set of gang hooks attached to your fishing line with a small barrel swivel, and weighted with split shot sinkers. If this rig is let to flow naturally with the current of a river or stream as it bounces off the bottom the entire time, the results can be spectacular.
Another aspect to learning to truly fish with live worms is to become as efficient as possible. What do I mean by this? Simply this: We all have a limited amount of time to spend fishing, so while we're fishing we want to spend as much time as possible with our lines in the water (where the fish are) rather that spending are time performing menial tasks. Using things like retractors and a bait bag are a wonderful way to become more efficient.
Retractors hold lightweight fishing gear such as hemostats or nail clippers (for line nipping) right on your vest or shirt for easy access. In other words, if you need to clip the excess line after attaching a small lure, rather than biting it, you grab your nail clippers, use them to snip your line, and simply release them. The retractor zips them right back into place! With the help of a retractor or two, you'll never have to waste time searching through your pockets looking for your lightweight fishing gear. That gear will always be within easy reach.
A bait bag makes you more efficient by holding your live worms (or other bait) at your fingertips for use. You'll never have to try to remember where you stuffed that container of worms when fishing. With the use of a bait bag, you always know where your worms are. A bait bag is so convenient for carrying live worms that you'll wonder how you ever fished without one. This is of course unless you don't move around while fishing, in which case a bait bag wouldn't be necessary. If you move around while fishing and use live worms, the bottom line is that you need to be using a bait bag.
These simple tips will make you a much better and more efficient live worm angler. As I alluded to earlier, I believe that live worm angling is every bit the art form that fly fishing supposedly is, as long as size 4 hooks, snap swivels, and red and white bobbers aren't employed. In that case you're just a person out "trying to catch a fish". When you use gang hooks, retractors, and bait bags, you become a craftsman. Never forget what Steven Wright said of us anglers, "There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore looking like an idiot."

Bow River Fly Fishing Tips for a Novice Fly Angler?
I've tried fly fishing a couple times... now I bought a rod/flies/waders/etc. All dressed up and ready to go. I'm practicing my casts in my yard right now just to get the hang of it, but I just cannot wait to go out to the Bow River and give it a whirl.
So for you experienced fly fishermen out there... what kind of advice can you give a novice like me? In particular, what are some signs on the river that give clues to where the trout are, what they're feeding on, and how to catch it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Look for rocks, logs, and other things the trout can hide behind. Trout tend to hang out downstream of rocks and other cover to break the current, then rise to feed. They return right back. Also, look for bubble lines in the water. You'll notice that the current makes a V shape as it passes around rocks and other structure and bubbles that form on the surface will form a line leading downstream. Food for trout -such as natural flies- will also tend to flow along the bubble line as well and trout will be waiting to feed on them.
Watch closely for rising trout and when you see them hit the surface cast just upstream from them and let your fly drift down to them. It takes a bit of practice to read a river to find where the trout are but you'll get the hang of it soon enough.

Bend Oregon is home to several species of trout. Rainbow Trout, German Brown trout, lake trout, brook to brook trout and are the main species caught within a short drive from Bend.
Almost all lakes and streams in central Oregon contain Rainbow Trout. The Deschutes River is world famous for trout fishing. It begins in the Cascade mountains of the Southwest Bend. It is the source of water for Crane Prairie Reservoir and Reservoir WICKIUP. It crosses the middle of Bend and empties into the mighty Columbia River.
Crane Prairie Reservoir is known for its large trout ( "Cranebows"). It is about one hours drive from Bend. It was flooded in 1928 with most of the wood left on foot. It is a relatively shallow lake with the deepest sections approximately 15-20 feet deep near the channels in the spring. The water level drops steadily all summer during the irrigation season.
The Cranebows spawn in the upper Deschutes in early spring, then return to the reservoir and are scattered around the shallower water. As the water warms in early summer fish congregating around the channels start. Twenty to thirty inches Rainbows are frequent.
All methods of work of Fishing Lake on strong fighting fish. Fly fishing is very popular once the fish move in channels. Trolling flies, spoons or spinners is a popular method at the beginning of the season. Early summer brings on the growth of weeds, which makes it difficult to troll without a gun you lure.
There are numerous campgrounds and one resort on Crane Prairie. The station provides rental boats, licenses and everything you might need for trout fishing. The owners are always helpful to new fishermen Pointing to where the fish are biting best. It is difficult to fish here without a boat.
The Deschutes flows out of Crane Prairie and a few short in miles WICKIUP Reservoir. WICKIUP a large Rainbow and German brown trout as well as a large population of Kokanee Salmon. Kokanee and Browns are the fish primary target.
Early spring brings out the die hard Brown Trout fishing. They are concentrated near the dam and generally troll Rapalas or similar minnow type lures. Ten pounds of fish are common in early spring. Since brown trout are nocturnal, you will find the serious fisherman on the water First light. WICKIUP is best fished by boat but some large browns are caught along the shore of the dam in the spring.
During summer the Kokanee start to flow along the river channel. Jigging, bait fishing or trolling are the methods preferred to catch the Kokanee WICKIUP. "Kokanee spawn in the fall with the Browns monitoring the Deschutes channel. Early morning and late evening is the best time to target big Browns.
WICKIUP one ramp has improved, which is located at Gull Point. There is not a boat dock, but if it makes it too difficult for launching and boarding your boat. There are some campgrounds and improved many places unimproved camp.
The Deschutes River continues downstream of the dam and crosses WICKIUP Bend. This section contains some smaller Rainbows and some fine German middle Browns. It crosses the Deschutes National Forest. There is a drift well dam up the Pringle Falls area.
Pringle Falls is dangerous and can be derivative. Watch for signs and be ready to take over the falls. This is a nice drift. The river Pringle Falls to Bend several different waterfalls that can be derived. Check the many books available that address this section of the river in the detail.
The stretch of river that runs through Bend does not produce many fish as it is not filled with fish farming and receives fishing pressure important.
The Deschutes flows from Bend into Lake Billy Chinook is located between Redmond and Madras. Lake Billy Chinook is actually a reservoir that is supported by Round Butte Dam. "Round Butte" reservoir is filled by the Deschutes River, Crooked River and Metolius River.
Lake Billy Chinook is known for its indigenous bull trout. Bull Trout are close to extinction in many parts of Oregon, but not in Lake Billy Chinook. State registration of Bull Trout was caught here in 1989. He weighed 23 pounds and 2 ounces. Ten to fifteen pounds of fish are still common with several to be taken each year.
The best time to take a large Bull Trout is in March and April. The Metolius arm of the reservoir residents of the reserve Warm Springs Indian and has been closed since late October to 1 March each year. Earlier this season, the biggest trout in the shallow waters ahead (10-20 feet) to feed on the abundant Kokanee salmon.
If you find the Kokanee you will find the bull trout. A boat is necessary for catch these fish. They are made by casting the shoreline with silver minnow plugs, trolling plugs, fly fishing with a telephone line sink or jigging the deeper water where fish have not moved up in the shallows yet.

I believe that when fly fishing for cold, clear waters here in the West, which pays big dividends to use fluorocarbon leader material. Your Benefits: Virtually invisible beneath the water, sinks quickly and does not reflect light in water, fish and CanÂ't will see their rates Catch monofilament Along. Yes, you can be more expensive, but to improve fishing for a daya and modification of a normal day in a great day, ita worth it for me. I had my first contact in the 90th fluorocarbon After import half of fishing against the company where he worked, received samples of one of our contacts in Japan. I tried Try some of 3 pounds and 4.5 pounds of test and I loved the heaviest test and how is fishing.
Depending on the brand, you must prove in May several different nodes when the nodes are the leaders in using a membrane forming fluorocarbon or when you tie a fluorocarbon leader tippet to a leader of monofilament. A knot for connecting leader sections together and perhaps the most popular is the crux of blood. It is fairly easy to tie and do not waste a lot of material.
When you need to join the two very different dimensions of leader material together, for example, L5 pounds to 6 pounds, use the improved blood knot: double the size reduced Leader of the material and then to the crux of blood with 4 double rows of 6 books on one side and 3 rounds of 15 books on the other side. A node very simple as linking various document formats and comprehensive one that offers 100% knot strength fluorocarbon is triple surgeon's knot, the ITA does not, but it really works. I also like using the surgeon's knot triple conditions of low light to Retie leading fine fluorocarbon tippets.
Use the node-link UNI Tippet fluorocarbon leader to your fly on the fly. It has 100% on the strength of the knots in fluorocarbon. To tie the leader to fly Online fly with a nail knot. To make a loop to connect the loop to change leaders: Cut the heel of the leading fly 8 inches below node nail and tie knots perfection loop to loop and cut ends back together. By linking all types of fishing knots with saliva work, and then draw the knot tight, but gradually reduce friction.

Anglers Trout Fly What are some good tips for a long time bass angler starting to fly fish for trout?
I have been a long time tournament angler for black bass. But starting out (as of last week) fly fishing for trout, casting is ok, but it seems that is one thing that will always need improvement. Would love some tips on books, vids, what flies to use when, ect. I live in MT and have acess to great fishing, so any clues to a good beginner spot would be a plus, and let me know if you want to go fishing!
The internet is full of resources. Coming from a bass background, you may find the most similar and most forgiving set of flies to use are streamers like wooly buggers and clousers because nymphs and dries require more experience to drift without any drag. You can use a heavier tippet like 4x and tie on a lightly weighted bugger, then just work it like you would a jerk bait, jig or plastic worm - up down or across they all work. Try stripping line at different speeds or just letting the fly hang in the current when it gets below you and slowly strip it back. Use a short leader and tippet no more than 8 feet until you get comfortable. Even 6 feet can catch fish if you have trouble getting the cast down with a longer leader. Pay special attention to areas under riffles and it's hard to go wrong. Use these in larger water if you can (2 feet deep is getting into good streamer water), then once you become more comfortable with casting a fly rod you might hook up with a fishing buddy to show you how to drift a dry fly. At that point you'll just need to slow down your cast and watch how others fish - there is little substitute for direct observation. Nymphs are probably the most difficult because if you use an indicator you'll get a lot more wind knots at first, and without one you really have to be familiar with presenting blind, drag-free drifts.
The Nantahala River fly fishing for trout is a feast for all fishermen. Fly fishing in winter and spring can bring problems, but the river is equipped with rainbow, trout and brown trout and should therefore be able to capture at least some fish dry fly, drowned fly or nymph. Fishing in this area is not only a pleasure because you have the opportunity to catch big fish, but many because the region is so beautiful.
Walking through the Nantahala River gorge overlooking the breathtaking that you will never forget. Although the leaves fallen trees that does not mean there are not many impressive views of the river and mountains. The "superior" Nantahala River is given water during the winter and spring, so it should be a population at high trout you catch. During the coldest weather of the year is somewhat of a challenge to fish for trout with dry fly, but it gives you the opportunity to master their nymph fishing abilities.
Using some basic models, such as ear nymph, Pheasant tail hair and you should have no trouble getting at least some bites. Having the ability to recognize and bite the hook is a different story. The trout in the headwaters of the Nantahala River are not too demanding for the presentation of the nymph to these practices should not be a problem. Do not forget to take our strike indicator, as they spit often the pupa before releasing them hooked.
Taking a trip to the mountains of North Carolina for a Nantahala River fishing trip is always a fun and exciting adventure. There are many other opportunities in an around the Nantahala River gorge so make sure to check it out before your next vacation.
