Fly fishing reels for trolling?

Just wondering,

Since fly reels are pretty much the same as mooching reels, are they capable of being used for trolling for salmon? I'm thinking fly reels such as Sage, Nautilus etc. Thanks!

My family uses fly rods and reels for trolling every day on Moosehead Lake in Maine. You can use either floating line for the salmon on top, or lead-line for those a little deeper. Nail a nice one with your line out as far as the filler line, and hold on for one of the most fun-filled retrieves you can get!

Are you thinking of planning a fishing vacation? For the uninitiated, fly fishing is an 'old as the hills' fishing method traditionally used to catch trout and salmon. Although nowadays folks plan a fly fishing vacation to catch several other species, including bass and span fish as well as the big salt water game, such as marlin. Even sharks have been known to get hooked using the traditional fly fishing method. So, when planning for an enjoyable fishing vacation it is important to consider your options thoroughly, first and foremost!

Destination

This is an important part of the decision because it dictates technique as well as the equipment you will need to take along on your vacation. Do some homework on the destination. Find out if the water is fresh or salty - open ocean or river or lake. Before you hand over your money, make sure it has been clarified exactly what you are getting for it. There are plenty of great lodges and resorts available. It is even possible to charter a boat to dramatically boost your odds of success.

Equipment

There is quite a bit of specialized equipment needed. Of course, as you would expect, there's the fly fishing rod! Do not just consider the price of the rod. When buying a rod, the length and the weight differs depending on the territory. When fishing in deeper waters, such as the lakes and oceans, a longer and heavier rod is recommended.

The second item you 'must have' is a sturdy reel, which is used to hold the fly line. Like the rods, prices and uses will vary.

Finally, do not forget waders or wading boots because the world will be a much colder place without them, that's for sure! Waders also provide protection from slipping.

Techniques

The techniques for fly fishing will differ depending on whether the sport is being conducted in a lake, stream or a river. In general, however, fish will be found in areas where there is protection from predators, a good source of food and a slow moving current.

Many of the vendors for the various types of fishing destination spots also provide guides to augment your experience with theirs. Guided tours are frequently offered, although expect them be a little more expensive. Even so, especially for beginners, it is advisable to at least consider the option. Along with some good planning, it invariably will ensure full enjoyment of your fly fishing vacation.

What are ALL the different types of Fishing (in/off shore, ice, etc) and the required rod reel for each type?

I would like to know ALL the different types of fishing and the appropriate fishing rod used in each setting. I know that there is In/off shore, surf fishing, pier fishing, and ice fishing. What types of rods are used in these situations. Also, what other types of fishing are there? What kind of rods are used in those fishing? Thank you.

Just thumb through the Bass Pro Shops catalog, they have rods and reels for all types of fishing , and they will show you what goes where!!!

No matter what level of experience you have as a fisherman, you will benefit greatly from having the right reel for the job. You can easily learn what you should be using though and improve your skill because of it. There are three different types that you need to consider. These are the casting reel, the fly casting reel and the spin casting reel.

The Bait Casting Reel

These are quite difficult. The line on them is pulled off the rod by the lureÂ’s weight. It is then thrust forward in the motion of casting. They provide a device that lays the line evenly across the rotating cylinder that acts like the core of the reel. Without a smooth cast it will cause problems when the line is reeled in. The line can become tangled, too.

The Fly Fishing Reel

In a fly fishing real, you need to insure that it has a drag that is very responsive. Then, youÂ’ll need to purchase a reel that can stand the tension and strain put on it by a large fish. These are more expensive reels than other types. Make sure to check to make sure there are no plastic parts on the reel. All metal reels are much more dependable and they make it worth the price.

The Spinning Reel

The closed faced reel is the inexpensive spinning reel. It is also fairly easy to control. This is probably the choice you would make for those who are learning to fish. They have a push button release for casting. They have an opening at the top where the line comes out when you cast. The reel will mount on your rod.

The open faced spinning rod is a more challenging option. It comes in many sizes to fit your needs. The lightest models are excellent for pan fish. Larger choices will help you with game fishing or ocean fishing. The line capacity on these is greater and is serviceable when you are after trout or even salmon. They offer a smooth drag. Although you can start with a closed face, you can improve your skills and move on to the open faced.

If you are only choosing one type of reel, go with a medium speed one. If two, then look for both a low speed and a high speed. Also, you should choose the right reel depending on if you are left handed or right handed. Also, remember that the lighter the line is, the smaller the reel. YouÂ’ll need to insure that the fishing line and the fishing reel will work together well.

You can get help with learning what type of reel to purchase from the salespeople at the fishing tackle shop.

I have a us border visa i'm from mexico do i need a permit if i'm staying 5 hrs at the Miami Airport?

i am from mexico and live at the border so my visa only allows me to travel along the border without a permit, i am flying from brasil to mexico and have a connecting flight in Miami i was wondering if I need to ask for a permit or my visa will keep me safe while I wait for my flight to mexico.

Technically, the international terminal of an airport is a "port" and thus you do not need a visa to be in the terminal.

You may not leave the terminal however.

Weather I am going fly fishing to the mountains trout fishing or the coast for some saltwater fishing or just a few hours on a farm pond or local lake, there is one fly that I am never without. Because all fish at some point in their lives feed on minnows than why wouldn't you carry the best minnow imitation fly with you where ever you are going fishing.

The Clouser's minnow is without a doubt the most productive fly that has ever been tied. Because the Clouser's minnow is tied upside down, the weighted eyes cause this fly to work with the hook facing up, making it almost weed less. This fly can be striped fast making it look like a healthy minnow or it can be worked slowly working through underwater rocks and trees and brush.

I have caught large freshwater trout with a Clouser's minnow from Maine to the southern Appalachians, as well as northern Arizona, Colorado, Montana, Washington state, and Alaska. Large trout at some point in their development must adapt to catching and consuming food larger that small fly. They begin feeding on crayfish, mice, and minnows. These larger food sources offer large trout a larger meal with a minimal expense of energy. The most productive colors for catching large trout are either the silver or the chartreuse Clouser.

I have also caught largemouth bass, smallmouth bass and crappie bass with the Clouser's minnow. If you have ever watched Bass Master's on television, you have noticed that many of the lures they use imitate minnows. For largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing, the best colors are chartreuse, silver and black. For crappie bass the best colors are chartreuse or yellow in smaller sizes. You can even catch pan fish, brim, sunfish, and blue gill with even smaller sizes.

For saltwater fishing there is no better fly to have with you than a Clouser's minnow. I remember the first time I was preparing to go saltwater fly fishing for the first time I went to my local fly shop and asked what the best fly to buy. Both of the people there told me that if they were going to the coast, they would not go if they did not have an assortment of Clouser's with them. The Clouser's minnow When stripping the Clouser's fast I have caught more bluefish, false albacore, tarpon and snook, drum, sea trout, redfish, permit and ever bonefish than can remember. Stripping it slower I have even caught flounder with the Clouser's Minnow.

The Clouser's Minnow, in various colors is the only fly that I carry with me weather I am going fishing for freshwater trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie bass, pan fish, or saltwater fishing. If you use the right colors in the right sizes and learn how to present these flies properly you can catch fish wherever there are fish.

Tight lines and clear water,

Brian

Brian was first taught to fly fish when he was eight years old. He has been fly fishing for for over fifty years, He also owns a website for fly fisherman, fly fishing, redfish, largemouth bass.
Catch and release.

Floating Fly Line

Question about Fly Fishing?

I have a pool i have not used in my garage i tried to unreel the spool to let out the line "for some air" and i noticed after the floating line it was tied to some kind of string that looked kind of like kite string. Is that normal? Whats its purpose? Seems pretty weak. Also just to make sure i got this right. The line attaches to the leader and the leader attaches to the Tippet and the tippet to the Fly?
Oh and what is the tippet made out of and does anyone have a recommendation for a good one for Bass fishing to Pan Fishing? Thanks!

The Kite string that your talking about is called fly line backing. This is attached to the back end of the fly line generally with a nail knot.

The purpose of the backing is to one fill the reel up since the fly line is generally around 80-100 feet long and will not completely fill up the fly reel. Having the backing on the fly reel helps keep the fly line from developing memory (coils) so that you can cast and manage your line easier.

Since your fly line is not very long, you generally have anywhere from 50-125 yards of backing on your reel in case you get a fish on your line that takes a very long run. If your fly fishing for saltwater species you may have as much as 350+ yards of fly line backing on your reel to ensure the fish does not spool you.

Backing is attached to your fly line, where the butt section of your leader is attached to the front of your fly line. Most fly fisherman fish with pre-tapered leaders that are either made out of monofilament fishing line or fluorocarbon line. New tapered leaders that come out of a package generally have 24" of tippet, which is the last portion of the leader. You'll notice that the leader is very thick at the butt section and tapers down to a smaller diameter at the tippet section of the leader. This is the section that you attach your fly too.

Hope this helps you out. Feel free to contact me if you have any further questions by visiting my website at www.kent-klewein.com

Content vs. Intent / Is Attraction Marketing Dead?

Attraction marketing relies on a process of reeling in followers based on the effectiveness of the bait. Perhaps we need to consider the quality of the information we are using to cast into the sea prospects as well as our techniques. Continuing, for a moment, with the fishing theme, not all fly fishermen are created equal. They may use the same bait but some know how cast and some don't. Some fishermen catch their limit and others limit their catch.

The answer we are looking for may not be found in the content of the free information as much as the integrity of the source. I believe that the answer is based on a well defined purpose of the messenger. Does the messenger have a fundamental intent to genuinely make a difference in the life of the subscriber? Think of this as a catch and release program. We can catch em, eat em and throw away the bones or we can catch em, and release em, to prosper and do good things.

It all comes back to the old saying "I don't care what you know until I know you care." The "something for nothing" message wears a little thin once reality hits and you find yourself with more expense than income. Hype is available in abundance. What people are seeking is hope not hype.

I don't personally see any great problem with the concept of "Attraction Marketing." The approach may vary as the market evolves; however, anyone in business is looking to attract consumers. So the question is "What do you have to offer beyond the bait?"

There is a lot of information that can provide a track to run on. Some of the information is packaged in newsletters or ezines, or manuals or in random articles. We all want good, current information. More importantly, we need a viable source of information backed by someone that can effectively support the application of what we have learned.

There is a concept floating around that suggests that all we need is to keep reselling the same information until the consumers get the picture and begin using the information. It is perfectly valid to recognize that there will always be those individuals who never advance beyond the consumer stage. For the "Treadmill Consumer" there will never be enough content regardless of the quality.

There are two things required to get people off of the treadmill and on the desired path. The first thing is a motivated commitment to do whatever it takes to get it done. The second requirement is the mentor who can provide the model for taking action. It is useless to gather tons of information with no action. On the other hand minimal information with action and purpose can produce great things.

If we are going to be in the "Attraction" business we need to provide some genuine mentorship to those who make the connection. This is where personal substance kicks in. If all you have done is gather and redistribute information, you may be in trouble. If, however, you have established personal purpose and integrity that others can trust, then you can earn the right to lead others.

It is not enough to have products and opportunities to sell. Lord knows there is no shortage of "stuff" for any and all consumers. What we need is people, who are willing to put themselves on the line, take their eyes off of themselves and focus on the needs of those whom we can serve.

Caution: There will always be those individuals who will suck the life out of you if you let them. You will never build an effective network made up of unmotivated followers. To be clear, I'm not knocking those who choose to follow. In fact we need followers. I am specifically referring to the requirements to build a large, active network. You are looking for leaders or people with the potential to become leaders. Some people are ready, willing and able to step up and make it happen and some people are not.

So, to the subject of attraction marketing- Yes? No? Maybe? Of course, we will always need to attract fellow marketing enthusiasts. Maybe we can place our focus on "Relationship Marketing." Not much is going to happen until we begin to build relationship. This is where the rubber meets the road. I believe that the motivation and drive behind the message we offer is often more important than the information itself as we move forward to build relationships.

What do you think?

As fish has such a small amount of connective tissue, it requires very little cooking. If it is overcooked, the flakes fall apart and the fibers become tough, dry and tasteless. There are several ways of cooking fish, but the cooking process should, in general, be short and gentle. Although fillets are more popular, most cooks agree that fish on the bone - as with meat - has more flavor.

Frying -

This is a popular method, and fish can be both shallow-or deep-fried. For both processes the flesh of the fish must be coated with egg and breadcrumbs, batter, flour or oatmeal - to protect the delicate flesh. Usually fillets of fish are cooked in this way. A vegetable oil should be used (if deep-frying, the oil should only be used for fish), but a combination of butter and oil is best and tastiest for shallow-frying.

Grilling -

This methods is used for whole fish, steaks, fillets and cutlets, particularly oily fish such as mackerel, salmon and trout. The flesh is usually scored with a knife (if the fish is on the bone) to ensure even and thorough cooking. The fish should be dotted with butter to prevent it drying out. The grill should be set at a moderate heat, rather than on high, so that the fish does not dry out. The smaller the fish, the higher the grill. Line the grill with foil so that the pan and the rack don't have lingering fish flavors.

Baking -

Fish can be baked whole, brushed with butter or oil, and stuffed; they may be open or lightly covered with buttered foil for protection. They can also be baked in a liquid (milk, sauce, wine or stock).

Poaching -

This method ensures that the fish remains moist throughout cooking. The fish is cooked in a liquid, such as fish stock, wine, water or milk. which can be flavored with herbs, a little onion or lemon juice. The fish may be cooked on top of the stove in a pan or fish kettle, or in the oven. If the pan is not covered the fish should be basted frequently. The cooking liquid is usually used as a basis for the accompanying sauce.

Steaming -

The fish is cooked in the steam above a pan of simmering water. It should be placed between two buttered plates, or on a plate covered in foil to prevent the natural juices escaping into the water beneath.

En Papillote -

Fish, whole or in fillets or steaks, can be wrapped up in foil, greaseproof or cellophane with various flavorings (butter, lemon juice, wine, onion, garlic, herbs) and poached, steamed, baked or deep-fried. All the essential flavors and juices are retained making it one of the best ways to cook fish.

Flies Fly
For most outfielders, luck has nothing to do with catching flies
New research from Brown University supports a long-standing theory about how outfielders catch fly balls. The eye continuously tracks the ball as its visual velocity increases or decreases, and the outfielder runs backward or forward to compensate. Details are online at the Journal of Vision.

Ever since the 1800's in backwoods hollows of early America, fly fishing has been the staple sport for many anglers. In its early days, fish were snared to put food on the table. Today, fly fishing accomplishes not only catching a delicious dinner but also being a beloved North American sport. Additionally, fly fishing is popular not only in the US and Canada but also in Europe, South American and in Japan.

This is an ancient method of angling and known most as a means for catching salmon and trout. Today it is used to catch a wide variety of fish types which include: pike, pan fish, carp, grayling and bass. Fly fishing is used to also snare marine fish species which include: snook, bonefish, tarpon, striped bass and redfish. Sometimes fly fishers will catch fish they didn't intend to such as bream, rudd or chub while they are intending to snare the target types of fish such as trout. A lot of fly fishers hope to catch different types of fish with the fly they have as the lure.

In olden days, fly fishing was the main method of angling and was used to snare trout and salmon only. Today, bass, grayling, carp, pike and pan fish are often the 'catches of the day' when fly fishermen and women head to the rivers, brooks and lakes.

Using fishing flies for fly fishing is fun, Whether it be for fresh or sea water. Fly fishing in freshwater includes these different types as follow: cold water fly fishing (to catch trout, steelhead and salmon), cool water (to snare walleye, pike or perch) and warm water (for fishers who hope to catch bass, chub or catfish). Different techniques are used for the freshwater locations. Methods for fly fishing are different in streams, rivers, lakes or brooks.

Flies in the past were tied with any natural material but imitation substances are now not only popular but common. Flies are available in different sizes, patterns and colors to match the local aquatic insects, minnows or other bait which will attract the fish of the region.

Usually fishing flies designs are either 'attractors' or 'imitators'. The imitators will mislead fish through a very real imitation of baits or insects on which these fish will feed. These imitation flies don't have to always look exactly like the insects or bait, their furs and feathers look like the 'real thing' when deep underwater. Additionally, the imitation flies when underwater move with the current to defraud the fish into thinking they are living creatures.

Fishing flies lures known as 'Imitators' look close to the actual insects or small fish of the region customarily used as bait. Some 'imitators' may not look exactly like the bait materials but their movements in the water sufficiently simulate those of the actual lures. Fish will still bit fishing flies made of fur, hair or feathers as long as these baits move like the 'real thing'.

'Attractors' are constructed in bright and brilliant neon or fluorescent hues. The purpose of these neon colors is to incite an aggression response in the intended fish. The fish become aggravated and attack (bite) the lure. Popular attractors are found primarily in neon chartreuse or fuchsia. Common chartreuse fishing flies are the 'Green Weenie' types used by fishers all over North America.

As with any style of fishing, the bait you use when ice fishing depends entirely on the kinds of fish you want to catch. Live bait is a much more popular choice among ice fishermen than their summertime counterparts, since the layer of ice and snow over the water stops light from glinting off metal lures designed specifically to attract fish in this way. However, it is important to remember that much of the appeal live bait has for fish is how it wriggles around, and hooked live bait dies much more quickly in the frigid water under ice than it does in warmer weather. Everyone has their own personal preference, but both artificial and live baits have proven very effective when used for ice fishing if they are chosen carefully.

The best live bait to use when ice fishing for small pan fish is insects. Maggots are the traditional bait to use because their movements resemble those of what the fish naturally feed on. Waxworms share much of the same appeal to fish as maggots except they are a little bigger. More recently, people have started to use Eurolarvae when they go ice fishing. Eurolarvae can be very effective because they come in assorted colors, including orange, red, blue, yellow, or white. Also, if they are properly hooked they can survive in the cold water longer than other invertebrate baits. The best artificial lures to use for pan fish are rubbery and resemble insects.

If you are more interested in catching walleye on your ice fishing expedition, some good live bait options are Redtail chubs, Crappie minnows, or Shiner minnows. Redtails have a red tail fin, which walleye find particularly attractive, and have become increasingly popular recently. Crappie minnows are the smallest variety of minnow used for ice fishing, and they are traditionally the most popular. Shiners are best known for summer fishing because sunlight glints off their silvery scales, attracting many varieties of fish. They are also a little bigger than the Redtails or Crappie minnows, and are good for ice fishing because they can stay alive on a hook under the ice for longer than the other two. Walleye can see shiny, silvery objects very well because of their large eyes, so if you plan to use artificial lures, go for the ones with reflective, metal parts.

If pike is what you are planning to pull out of your ice hole, you will have to choose a bigger variety of live bait. The most popular options are Fathead minnows or Suckers. Fatheads are sometimes only a little bigger than Crappie minnows, but they range in size much more, so the bigger ones are more likely to land pikes, while the smaller ones are better for catching walleye or perch. Suckers are one of the largest bait minnows available on the market, and are the best for catching pike. However, sometimes they can grow to fifteen inches long, which is usually too big to be used as bait. The best artificial lures for fishing for pike resemble small fish, and it is important to remember to jiggle the line when using these lures to make the lure look more convincingly like a fish. Pike are unlikely to bite an artificial lure if it is just hanging there in the water, no matter how realistic it looks.

More than 25 percent of the fish caught in Wisconsin are nabbed when the lakes have frozen over, which tells you how popular ice fishing in in dairy country.

Most fishing done on the ice starts in early December. This is when local fisherman brave 3-4 inches of ice and begin to go in search of walleye. This year is an exception. There is plenty of ice up north. This author was out on the Eagle River Chain of Lakes this past Thanksgiving. Although it was too early to get any flags in the spot I was fishing, my neighbor was able to get a monster on a lake nearby. He caught a 30", 12lb Walleye! That would go on just about anyone's wall.

Walleye and Panfish are the most popular fish to ice fish for, but if you can find a good Northern Pike spot during the day, you are in for a fun day of fishing. All of these fish are good through the ice. During the winter the meat on these fish is firm and delicious. Sometimes during the summer, Northerns and some pan fish get soft and grubby. This is not the case in the winter time. You would be hard pressed to tell the difference between a winter northern and a winter walleye in a blind taste test.

Panfish are usually caught by jigging. Some fisherman have good success on Tip Downs. Tip downs usually have a wooden stand next to the hole and a rod, wire, or even a piece of umbrella extended from the top. As the fish bites, the wire tips down. These are good setups for soft biting fish.

Walleye and Northern are usually caught on Tip Ups. These tip ups usually have a flag on a spring which releases when the fish bites. In my opinion the number one Tip Up is the Beaver Dam Tip Up. I don't own stock in the company nor do I sell any of their products, they just make a damn good tip up. When using a tip up, it is important that it's spool moves smoothly without grabbing. Winter walleye can be skittish and if they feel a tug from the spool, they will drop the bait.

On early season, I like to use medium and large shiners through the ice for walleyes. It is important that you hook the shiner just underneath that dorsal fin for walleye. Get that treble hook as close to the dorsal fin as possible. If you hook them to far into the body, it was what we call a "death hook"- your minnow is likely to die quickly and it will lack the movement that a well hooked minnow has. Northerns will hit a dead minnow but walleyes like them wiggly.

It is also important where you put your minnow in the water when you are walleye fishing. The best position is to have that minnow about 10-15 inches off the bottom of the lake. Use a depth finder first to mark the bottom. I sink my depth finder first, grab the line at the water line, pull about 20 inches of line up at put a wooden match stick through the line. Then I put on the minnow and let out line making sure that match stick is next to my spool when I put my tip up in the hole.

This should get you started on ice fishing. Remember, be safe and check the ice with a spud bar before going out.

Minnetonkas make great Christmas presents.
