Learning the Different Types of Fly Fishing Lures

Learning the skill of fly fishing is no easy sport for every angler. It involves angle precision in order to achieve the target position of the artificial flies. Fly fishing is almost a game for many because interested anglers are challenged to catch many different fish species with use of the fly rod by imitating insects to lure the fishes. The success of fly fishing depends on many factors and one factor is the fly fishing lure. Imitating insects are done by attaching lures or flies into the fly line to be thrown to the water. This imitation of flies can lure the fishes and eventually trap them and catch them.

There are different types of fly fishing lures or flies and each are listed below

Wet fly This type of lure imitates aquatic insects below the water surface. Meaning this type of lure design are the patterned after drowned insects.

Streamer Lures

This is a type of lure that is a form of wet fly lure. This type is designed to imitate small fishes that are being eaten by large fishes.

Dry Fly

This type of lure is designed to imitate adult stage of many aquatic insects. The lure should be able to ride on the water surface smoothly to make it almost real and close to insects that falls into the water such as beetles and ants.

Nymphs Lures

This Lures imitates the larval form of aquatic insects. This is a special form of the wet fly lure.

Surface Lures

This are also called bass poppers. This type of lured design imitates frogs or mice. They are made from bright colors that are attractive to large fishes such as Northern Pike or Bass especially when they cause commotion due to water movement.

Lures or Flies may be bought in the market or can be self-made. Making flies or lures is a skill and many anglers are learning to make their own lure instead of buying in the market. They are up for the challenge of making the difficult yet best flies to lure the fish close and eventually fall trap to it. Lures may be made from feather, fur or light cloth and tied together with a tie specially made for making fly fishing flies. There are many books or videos providing step by step procedure in making the lures. One just has to follow them properly in order to make the best lure to catch fishes.

Beginning Fly Fishing

For all Fly Fishing Beginners learning about drag, what it is and why it is not a good thing is a big step towards success as an angler. It is also one of the first basic fly fishing lessons all beginners should learn because without it you're going to fail badly.

When you are fishing on a lake you can typically let your line lie in the same place and wait for a fish to come to you. But in a river it's a different ball game. As soon as your line touches the water it's carried downstream by the current.

As the line is pulled towards you, you need to pull the slack line back through the rod, and let it lay on the ground or water beside you. This needs to be done at the same speed as the water bringing your fly towards you. If you don't then you will have a massive arc of line being pulled down stream. So what's wrong with that?

Well that's a very bad thing as it creates "drag" on the fly. It also makes it hard to pick the line off the water, ready for recasting back up stream. There are some advanced techniques that can be used to get your line airborne again without pulling it back in, but that's far beyond the skills of a beginner.

So drag is a bad thing but what really is it?

Well when you are fly fishing on a stream or river, you want your fly to move naturally with the current, fish are very, very smart, if they notice their food not moving naturally then they are unlikely to strike it. As your line drifts downstream it can pull or should I say "drag" your fly along with it especially if there are currents moving at different speeds. That looks most unnatural and is why drag is a very bad thing.

In these situations then a technique called "mending" is used to stop your fly from being dragged by different speed currents. Mending is the moving of your line while it still lies in the water. This is done by small flicks of the rod.

Let's make an example where the fly is in slow water but the line is in a faster current. The faster water will obviously pull the line downstream faster than the slow water is carrying the fly. So in this example you would flip the line towards the slower water several times. This will put slack loops in the line giving a buffer of slack curves between the fast and slow water and also helps get the line out of the faster moving current.

The combination of the slack line and trying to get your line out of the faster current gives your fly a greater chance of drifting naturally. Mending like anything with fly fishing takes practice but it doesn't take long to get the basics of mending down pact.

So if you can take control and eliminate drag from your presentation you will be well on your way to success as an angler.

If after mastering drag, you still cant seem to land that trophy fish or even get your cast to land in the water then go grab my free fly fishing beginners ebook titled: 101 Fly Fishing Tips. You may even find a secret or two.

You can try looking at www.texasfishinghome.com and see if that website has any information about fly fishing.

Fly Fishing How To
How much should I spend on beginning fly fishing equipment?

I'm a 17 year old girl and I want to learn how to fly fish. How much should I spend on equipment (a pole, string, leads, flies, etc.) Would it be better to buy one of those inexpensive, complete kits that come with everything needed to start?

The best answer I know of, and one you're probably already gotten, is to buy the best you can afford, and buy it from someone who knows what they are selling and can provide you with a properly matched rod and line and a decent reel. If you try to go cheap you may get an outfit that makes learning to cast a royal pain which will quickly destroy your desire to learn this wonderful sport. You will also need to think a bit about what types of fish you plan to pursue. A good quality 5 wt rod with a floating, weight forward line is a good start.

Fly fishing is like any hobby - you can spend a fortune on gadgets. Here again, you should think about forming a relationship of trust with someone who knows the equipment. I became a lifelong fan of one company because they talked me out of buying things I really didn't need. OK, now to answer your question: for the rod, reel and line you'll spend somewhere around $150. Cabelas (I'm a real fan because everything I bought is excellent and Michael, the fly shop manager, seems very knowledgable.) or Bass Pro both have decent oufits within that range. Try to avoid getting sucked into buying the orange line that comes with some of the rigs. Most decent rods come with a rod sock and you should get a rod tube as soon as possible. I make mine out of PVC pipe with foam captured in the bottom and top. That case is heavy but it floats and is darn near indestructable. Fly rods are fragile, so never travel without having it in the rod sock and in a case. A scratch can weaken the rod enough that it will break someday - no doubt when you least want it to.

OK, so now you have the rod, reel and line, now what. Get a hemostat-like device such as the ones made by Dr. Slick with oversize finger holes. Next you need to think about leaders and tippets. Since you're just starting out you can buy a few tapered leaders ranging between 2X and 5X and some monofilament tippet spools in the same sizes. Finally, buy an assortment of popping bugs and a plastic box with divided compartments. These things will add about $50 to your investment. Unless someone's going to take you on a trip to fish for something exotic, stop here and learn to use this stuff before buying a vest and the rest of the stuff. Also, invest in a good book such as Fly Fishing for Dummies, it's excellent so don't be put off by the title. At this point you need to learn about tippets and hook sizes and how all this stuff relates. If you can find a good casting instructor take a couple of lessons - it will save a lot of frustration. If you can find a Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF) casting instructor, they're worth every penny. It's kind of like learning to drive, don't let a friend teach you. There is a club here in St. Louis called the Ozark Fly Fishers (do a Google search and you'll find their website) and they can help you a lot, but you'll need to ask for help. They're not arrogant or whatever, they just assume folks know how to cast unless you speak up. Several of their instructors are FFF certified and I've taken lessons from them on a number of occassions. It's amazing what the placement of your hand or how you turn your wrist can affect the cast and that's exactly what makes lessons so valuable.

One of the easiest ways to practice, and one that's a lot of fun, is to go out to Busch Wildlife and rent a rowboat which costs about $5.30 for the day. Go in the afternoon, at least during the summer, and plan to get on the water about 5:00 or so. Until the sun starts to go down, most fish are too deep to reach easily with a fly rod. Find a shady spot with some deep water nearby and play with the popping bugs. You'll catch lots of panfish and learn both casting and accuracy while having fun. Resist the temptation to go fish for trout right off the bat. They're a pain in the tail and you can flail the water for the entire day and catch nothing. One last thing, crush the barbs on your hooks. That way you can release the fish without damaging it and, when you catch yourself, the hook comes out easier. The absence of the barb makes very little difference in landing the fish. Wear a broadbrimmed hat to deflect the flies that seem to want to nest in your head and some sort of glasses that cover your eyes very well, for the same reason.

Long-winded answer to your simple question. One of the wonderful things about this sport is that, generally speaking, folks are delighted to help others become as fascinated by the sport as they are. That's my goal for you. Have fun, and stop fishing for a while when you get frustrated. Casting takes time to learn, but it's very much worth while to learn correctly in the beginning.

Good luck.

There are also some people who mix the two materials together to create more attractive bait for the target fish. This is way cooler than the old way of fishing where we use worms as baits. Some just doesn't have the stomach for that. Now, with fly fishing, everybody can learn how to fish and they can basically do it anywhere with a body of water with some fish in it. Since the earliest fisherman plucked fish in the water with their bare hands, fishermen have found many different methods of fishing. Fly fishing is one of the most old and has been in existence for hundreds of years. Is believed to have started in Roman times, are considered advanced methods of fly fishing that has developed in Scotland and England. With improved reels, line and fly gear fly fishing has grown in popularity by leaps and bounds.

Originally, fishing, fly is mainly used for catching trout and salmon, which are easily fooled by artificial flies. However, many fish species are being directed by fans of sport fishing with dry flies and wet. Today the lines are heavier and larger diameter. As a result, there is a need for greater reel that is required to hold the line size. Fishermen now investigating the local water life to determine the best colors and styles of flies that can be able to attract the local fish population.

The main objective of the fly fishing is to provide an artificial fly to the fish that will closely resemble an insect or a bug that is native to the area. Curious fishermen can spend much time researching the types of errors that flourish in the region, and to devote time to studying the types of fish and how to approach their victims.

It takes a lot of practice and concentration to place the line that projects from the coil and the earth fly in the desired location on the surface of the water.

The two main types of lures used in fly fishing are the dry fly that remains on the surface and the wet fly is designed to sink once it hits water. Other flies, flies emerging called partially submerged under water, to duplicate the action of insects emerging from their larval stage.

Fly fishing requires the fisherman to adjust to local conditions and alter their technique depending on time of day and season. He will take a fly fisherman much practice and patience to develop the skills necessary to always catch fish.

How to Fly Fish : How to Reel in Your Catch When Fly Fishing

Fly Fishing Magazine

One can attribute the popularity of fly fishing to its exposure in media. Television shows and programs have either featured fishing or have had programs that mainly focused on fishing. Nevertheless, fly fishing magazines have been a great contributor into the explosion of fishing.

These magazines have made believers into self described urbanites and city folk who long to experience the rugged and natural outdoors, albeit even just for a weekend. Images and descriptions detailed in a fishing magazine entice the imagination of its readers, who wait for time off to go and join this outdoor adventure. Tips and instructional guides have added more members in the fishing community.

Technology has also aided in the expansion of fishing to the mainstream as rods have become lighter and more durable. Proof of the popularity of the sport lies in the increase of advertising pages in fly fishing magazines. More and more resorts that are catered to affluent and high end markets are making their presence felt through print.

The Kodiak Legends Lodge in Alaska is an example of a resort that has benefited from fishing magazines. Pictures of the fishing grounds and the scenic view have added more inquiries from potential clients there.

Want to fish in a place where there are hardly any people, try the Buffalo Creek Ranch in Rand, Colorado where there are only 15 people residing in the town of Rand itself, and the ranch has a scenery and scope of 25 square miles. Want to be able to fish in one of the best known tail fisheries in the country and have your catch served with fusion cuisine influences of French or Asian taste, then go to the Snake River in Idaho and stay in the South Fork Lodge in Swan Valley.

Reputed to be one of the best dry fishing locations in the world, its facilities and amenities will definitely exceed your expectations added to the guide service provided by South Fork Outfitters and Henry Fork Anglers. The South Fork Lodge has all the bells and whistles of a luxurious holiday as well. Accommodations include lodge rooms, cabin rooms and the river house which has a full kitchen, large living room and an outdoor hot tub aside from a pool table and a large screen TV. Eat your breakfast at the main patio and enjoy the view of the Snake River.

These places were all featured in fly fishing magazines and many since have gone and visited their place. Fishing magazines are here to stay, now on print and online form as well.

Need ideas for an awesome 30th birthday gift for a guy. Please help!?

My husband is turning 30 and I want to surprise him with a really cool birthday gift. However, he has very few hobbies or interests. He likes History so any DVD sets you could recommend would be great. He also likes to fly fish but I got him a fly tying kit last year and fly fishing lessons prior to that. I'm hosting a BBQ with our friends as a surprise. Any BBQ themed gift suggestions? He just got a new BBQ and tools, but any other ideas? Please help! I really want this birthday to be memorable as it is the big 30. Thank you!!

You are such a good wife. Im sure it will be a memorable occasion. Is there any particular period of History he enjoys like Russian, Greek etc? And maybe a weekend fly fishing trip somewhere later on?You can get personalized chefs bbq aprons. Or how about thirty of something. Like 30 balloons, 30 postage stamps with family photo on them, 30 favorite packs of gum or candy, 31 flavors baskin robbins as he begins his 31st year? Best wishes to you both as it is so refreshing to read something happy on this site.

Fly Fishing Tippet

Fly fishing is a skill that is achieve thru use of right equipment, right angle precision, and right fly tying. The techniques in fly fishing and fly tying should come hand in hand to achieve fly fishing success. Tying the knot is as important as choosing the right equipment in fly fishing. Techniques of fly fishing and fly tying are learned easily when following the right steps and guidelines. Before the learning the right techniques in fly fishing, one must learn the right tying of the knot in order to be attached to the fly-fishing tackle.

Below are different types of knot to make to be attached to the fly fishing tackle.

Surgeons knot

This is the simplest knot to tie and is very strong in structure. This is usually used when the tippet is almost used up and another piece needs to be tied. The first thing to do is to overlap two lines with tag ends on opposite direction. This should be approximately 6 inches in length. Then, a loop is made where the right side is passed over and around the left side twice. The last step is to pull on all 4 ends of the knot and moisten it to make it hold together. The tag ends will then be clipped close to the knot.

Nail Knot

This is commonly used to attach backing line. A needle may be used for this type of knot. The first step is to assemble the fly line and the needle along the fly line. Then the backing line is laid along with the needle and then a turn is made to secure and hold all pieces together. The tag end is pushed to the channel created by the needle and the tag end is pushed forward while the needle is slowly withdrawn. This will tighten the knot.

Arbor Knot

This type of knot is useful in tying and securing on line end to spool arbor of the reel. The first step is to have the line around the reel's spool arbor. Then an overhead knot is tied to tag end. This is the first overhead knot and a second overhand knot should be made close to the first one. The standing part of the line is pulled to allow 2 overhand knots to jam on the spool. Tag end can be trimmed to make it neat.

The knot is a very important part of fishing tools because it stands between the fish biting the lure and your rod. If your knot is not tied properly and you don't use the appropriate one, it might just cost you the fish of your life. Seriously, you should be very mindful of all your fishing tools. They are not very many but each one is essential because each one has its own function. And these tools differ in qualities. If you are more of action fishing with bass flying fishing, you must get the strongest and most durable fishing tools on hand because it's going to be a struggle and battle. If you have a weak rod, not properly tied knot, and inappropriate lure, bass flying fishing will be just a dream.
