Fly Fishing Flies

Fly fishing is a challenging and fun activity for many fly fishermen. The challenge is to catch different species of fish. Yet, even catching a fish in fly fishing is already a challenge because it is never easy to master fly fishing. Fly fishing success has many factors. One factor the right choice of lures of fly fishing flies. These are used to imitate insects to lure fish and catch them eventually. The lures or flies may either be surface lures of below the surface lures. Common lures are the surface lures and these types of lures can catch big fishes such as the bass.

Bass fly fishing are now being done in fly fishing tournaments. The challenge is to catch many bass or to catch a bass fast. Most fly fishermen practice hard to master the perfect casting in order to create some commotion that will imitate surface animals to attract the bass. Catching bass in fly fishing is a challenge especially on strong fights on the water (bass are big and they put up a fight when they are catched). Bass are keen in waiting to pounce on their prey just as fly fishermen are keen on waiting for their fish.

The bass are easily attracted to surface flies especially if has distinct color. Most fly fishermen make their own lures when they want to catch bass. Bass fly fishing is dependent on the type of lure being used. The key to bass fly fishing success is on attracting the bass to the lures. This can be done by using dark colors such as brown, black or purple when it the horizon is dimming. Bass fly fishing is usually done when the sun begins to set because this is the time when they start to look for food because surface insects are available. Bass lures or flies can also be made using lighter colors because bass will pounce on any insect. There are insect that have light colors and making a bright colored lure or flies will surely attract the bass. Bass are after big insects but there are occasions that they are up for smaller insects which makes small flies feasible for catching bass.

Aside from the color of the flies, the movement is also a strategy to master when wanting to catch a bass. Each fly fisherman has their techniques in moving their bass bugs. They may cast it on the water without making it move on the surface for a few minutes then give it a slight twitch or movement to make bass think that it is a live insect. Bass are just waiting to pounce on their prey and it can be fun to lure them into some non-living flies and catch them easily. Bass fly fishing might seem easy but it is much more complicated when being studied.

Tiemco Fly
Fly fishing dry and wet fly hooks?

I recently bought size 12 and size 16 tiemco dry fly hooks. Can I also use these hooks for nymphs (hares ear, copper john, prince nymphs etc) or do they not sink well enough?
well they sink as well as nymph hooks though.

Yes you can use them for tying nymphs, the major problem you will be facing here is hook strength as a lighter wire is used for dry flies. As for sinking you can counter that with a beadhead or if you don't want to use a bead Gehrkes makes a product called "Xink" that is used for wet flies.(Gehrkes makes "Gink" for dry flies)

Yes, they will sink as soon as the fly gets soaked. Still I reccommend either using a bead or using a regular nymph hook.

My favorite fly fishing technique in the late summer/ early fall is performed with a dry line and long leader in rather shallow water using a tiny "hyalella shrimp".

The onset of cooler weather triggers the fish to start their pre-winter gorge. Hyalella shrimp are plentiful in marl bottoms and along the shallow weed beds. In many of the Kamloops lakes you will find fish cruising in as shallow as 2 feet of water, adding "sight fishing" to dramatically intensify the experience. A good pair of polaroid glasses come in real handy too!

I don't know why the long leader makes a difference but it does. We tie our own 20' to 24' fluorocarbon tapered leaders. The fish cruise through, sometimes in schools, sometimes by themselves, picking their way along the bottom, sucking up the tiny shrimp by the hundreds.

The retrieve is probably the most important. Without using a strike indicator, just cast alongside the weed bed (or to the fish if you see them), letting the shrimp settle to the bottom. Gently tighten the line so that it straightens. With the patience of hanging a chironimid, slowly retrieve the shrimp. Let it settle occasionally and continue to retrieve. Vary the speeds from extremely slow to short, light, 2 inch bursts. If you are casting over the weeds you will have to adjust your speed accordingly to prevent a hang-up.The flies are so small that they move along quite well over the weeds as long as you keep the fly moving.

Hyalella shrimp are a food staple for rainbow trout, particularly in the fall as they flourish in the marl or in weed beds. A few times my fishing buddy K.J. and I have actually seen fish that have committed involuntary suicide pursuing a vein of shrimp in the marl. What appears to happen to them is they chase the shrimp as they retreat into the marl eventually getting their heads stuck in the marl. If the marl goes past a portion of the gill plate, the fish get stuck, like on a barbed hook, and can't back out. They then smother to death. It's a rare event to see.

Here are a list of lakes that I like to sight fish with hyalella shrimp in shallow marl in the Kamloops Area. These lakes all have white bottomed marl (except Bleeker)

Peter Hope - Huge marl flats all around the lake

Roche Lake - the south end and south east islands

Black Lake- near Roche Lake - fabulous structure around the lake

Hosli Lake - near Roche - need a 4x4 here if the road is wet or muddy. The mid-lake shoal by the rocks is also known for it's fabulous sedge hatches in June and July.

Bleeker Lake - near Roche Lake

Community Lake - extensive flats along shoreline and around the islands

...and many more.

Occasionally, when you are fishing large marl flats like at: Peter Hope lake, Roche Lake and even Community Lake, there is a possibility that you may see what I am talking about. My friend KJ and I have found a few 4-5lb fish dead, tail up and head buried, over the last couple of years. It's eerie to look at.

Be prepared for a crazy fight, especially when the fish are over 20 inches and in the shallow water. The lack of depth takes the vertical dimension away from the fish so the run horizontally, frequently in multiple circles around the boat. My personal record count is 6 complete circle tows before I landed the fish.

Hyalella shrimp have a full range of natural colours with varying degrees of natural shades. Try light beige to brown, light mint green to olive dark green or even gray or orange patterned shrimp. The late Jack Shaw(legendary fly tyer and fly fisherman) tied an "opalescent shrimp" and used it with great success. His pattern is vividly illustrated in the new book by his old friend Ralph Shaw, titled "The Pleasure of His Company". (see below)

Tiemco scud hooks-2487 and Mustad-3906B #12, #14 and #16 seem to work best for me. Body material is usually natural or synthetic dubbing or ostrich feather strands. Occasionally I will put a tiny glass bead head on the size #12's but I rarely pull a back on them... I usually just trim the material short on the top side of the hook and apply some gloss. A fine rib (clear, red, gold or silver) is acceptable but not necessary.

Another note... rainbow trout will cruise these marl shoals and weedbeds all day however they appear to be most active in low light conditions (overcast) or when the sun is in a low position... 2 hours before sunset or within 2 hours after sunrise.

It takes a lot of patience, even for experienced fishermen to master this technique but when you do, you will be well rewarded and forever smitten.

Dave Ouellette worked with Ducks Unlimited Canada in the British Columbia interior for 11 years and had a virtual run on some of the best fly fishing lakes in BC. While constructing over 200 conservation wetland segments in southern /south-central BC, Dave managed to fish almost as many lakes and streams in his travels. Now, as an avid fly fisherman, Dave spends most of his ice free seasons devoting intense research and development days to the rainbow trout of the Kamloops area lakes.

What do you think of my poem?

By the river, in the dead of night,
A cry, and then another, like a spell
Turn the darkened beeches into light,
The silence of the woods into a bell;
And in a cottage on the moonlit hill
A woman shivers in her narrow bed
To hear the hare, and then the hare is still;
She feels its dusty fur against her head:
His ginger paws that panic like trapped flies,
Or tiny fish that see, or sense, dry land;
She hears the hare, she hears its wild cries
Glittering inside her ear like sand:
He's lost inside the forest of her hair
And finds, and steals, his mother's kisses there.

Vah jee vah!
Kya baat hai!

Do you know Snoopy, coined as the world's famous beagle? The cartoon character Snoopy became so popular among kids and even among adults. It has became popular not just in television shows, magazines and films but also in different collectibles such as mugs, pillows, towels, bags and other stuff. What's in a beagle that makes him famous?

The beagle, a medium-sized dog is a member of the hound group. These scent hounds, primarily developed for tracking hare, rabbit and other game are better at ground-scenting. Moreover, their sharp sense of smell and tracking instinct are the reasons why they are used to detect prohibited agricultural imports and foodstuffs in quarantine.

These medium-sized dogs are generally between 13 to 15 inches at the withers and weigh between 20 to 25 pounds. This breed's muscular body is covered with medium-length, smooth, hard coat and comes in a range of colors. The most common is the Tricolor, white with large black areas and light brown shading. There is also Classic Tri as well as Faded Tri. Beagle may also appear in two-color variety with white as the base color.

Their happy temperament is another reason why they are chosen as pets by most dog lovers. These pack animals enjoy company and can get along well with other dogs. They are also good with children. Despite their intelligence, beagles can be hard to train because they are bred to become single-minded and determined ideal for long chase. They have their minds of their own and tend to follow their own sense of smell that's why they are sometimes difficult to recall.

This breed can live for up to twelve years. They are known to have less inherited health problems but they are prone to epilepsy, hyperthyroidism, ear infections because of their long floppy ears and eye problems such as glaucoma and corneal dystrophy. In rare cases, beagles at a very young age can be affected by immune mediated polygenic arthritis, a condition wherein the immune system attacks the joints.

Since they are primarily developed to hunt hares, their stamina is great and energetic. They do not tire easily when exercised however, regular exercise is necessary because inactive beagles may become obese. Beagles rely on their owners to regulate weight and owners must also be aware that this breed eats whenever there is food around. Something for owners to watch out! Their nature as working dogs may lead minor injuries such as cuts and sprains so make sure to bring along with you the necessary items when you're out for hunting.

These are the reasons why these friendly and happy dogs gained the spotlight not just in films, televisions and magazines but more importantly in the hearts of every dog lover.

Richard Cussons writes articles of various topics. For more information, see Beagle and learn more about Beagle dog breed here.

Czech Nymph Fly Selection

There is one essential thing that the fly fisherman will need when Czech nymphing, that is heavy flies! Usually using a team of 3 flies on droppers with the point fly being the heaviest fly. A Caddis fly can be 5.5gm in weight, this is not a problem as the flies are not cast as traditional flies but lowered into the water.

Cased Caddis - The Prey Of Trout and Grayling

Caddis Flies are widespread across Europe wherever water is available, either static or running. However, the adult is a strong flyer and can move some distance from ponds, streams and rivers, especially as it is attracted to light. However it is the larvae form that is a key part of the diet for fish such as trout. The larvae which make a "case" in which to live using small stones, sand, pieces of leaves and all glued together with a silk lining inside. The silk is spun with a secretion from labial glands (around the mouth) like moth larvae. When full-grown the larva pupates in the case which stops being mobile and may be glued down to a rock.

The cased forms feed on vegetation whilst the caseless forms tend to be either carnivorous or detritivores. The predatory ones are those free living. The web-spinning, caseless larvae may create a silk tube in which to live whilst those in moving water spin the web between stones. This web may trap small invertebrates drifting with the current. This invertebrate drift, as it is known, is an abundant source of food as the current constantly dislodges animals living on the bottom of streams and rivers. Many of these caseless caddis larvae are associated with particular speeds of flow. However, much of what they catch will just be drifting detritus and other organic particulate matter on which the larva will feed (hence detritivore). Some particulate matter will be drifting plankton. Those larvae in especially fast flowing water, e.g. Hydropsyche, will have toughened upper parts to the thoracic segments (thickened external skeleton is referred to as being sclerotised). The larvae have their abdomens safely in the silk tube but the front section of the body protruding into the current. This sclerotisation may be an adaptation to protect them from small stones and other material hitting them.

It is this caddis that is one of our primary fishing imitations when Czech nymphing. Below are different imitations that can be used in descending weight order, with the heavyweights of the Czech nymphing world described first.

Czech Bottle Fly - Super Heavyweight Fly Fishing Flies

Czech bottle nymphs are the "bruisers" of the fly fishing world. Designed to hold bottom in the fastest of waters a Czech bottle nymph is a uniquely designed fishing fly. The Bottle Fly is a complete fly, designed in the shape of a bottle and is available in 2.2gm, 3.4gm, 4.4gm and even 5.5gm weights. The fly is manufactured from pre-made moulds which are tied very simply, the bottle is rolled in glue and sand is rolled onto the fly, a hackle is then simply tied to the front. The finished fly is identical to a caddis in its nest described above. The beauty of this fly being that it will hold bottom or take a team of flies to the bottom of the fastest of rivers. We use this for sea trout frequently as it can be used to hold a snake fly low in the fastest of waters!

Traditional Czech Nymphs - Heavy Fly Fishing Flies

These are the more "traditional" Czech nymphs used around the world. These are still a heavy fly, often tungsten weighted to keep the fly low in the water. Czech nymphs are available in a range of colours, from pea green to cream and red, from hares ear and amber to sparkle and orange. They key with these colours is actually that the Czech nymphing technique is forcing the trout to make a rapid decision, fast water with stimulating colours is often deadly.

A technique I frequently use is to use a heavy fly, often a bottle fly on the point with a natural colours Czech nymph on one dropper and a nymphs with colours on the second dropper. Using this technique you can see what the trout are eating before focusing on specific colours.

Goldhead / Beadhead Fly Fishing Flies

These are the "lightweight flies" used in Czech nymphing. The Goldhead or Beadhead fly has a small bead which gives it weight, ideal in slower rivers when Czech nymphing and frequently used as an alternative dropper.

Standard Nymphs

Do not forget to truly work a team of droppers, there is nothing to stop the fly fisherman using a standard caddis, nymph, stonefly or other fly on a dropper when Czech nymphing, the key is that it needs to be kept low and close to the river bottom.
