Yes, you need a license -- a business license. You'll have to keep track of business fees and taxes. No, you do not need a license to actually tie the flies commercially, but various credentials and certifications will help. Like classes or learning from particular, well-known individuals.

There are no age requirements, other than the age restrictions on doing business. I'm sure there is a minimum age to get a business license.

I don't know how much a fly shop will pay you for flies, but I know that a fly shop near me marks up their flies by more than 100 percent. Considering that they sell their flies for around 90 cents a pop, I guess that means they're paying their tier 30 or 40 cents apeice..?

Things is, you've got to tie scores and scores of dozens of patterns, and they have to be very consistently tied. If you look at the flies at a good fly shop, all the flies look almost exactly alike, they're attractive, and they're sturdy. I know three or four guys who tie commercially or have in the past (including the guy who taught me), and they're all older dudes who have LOTs of time behind a vise.

You'll need wholesale connections to buy materials -- you'll need to make each fly cost you as little as possible and make your margins as wide as possible. Finding materials of high quality at good prices and quantities will be a big challenge. If you buy your materials from ordinary places (like fly shops), you won't make any money.

You also have to be reliable and flexible. You have to be ready to go all winter with no orders and then fill big orders at other times -- if you let your shop run out of BWOs in June too many times, they'll find someone else. On the other hand, you can't have a ton of materials and flies on your hands -- that stuff costs you money and you've got to be sending them out all the time. Finding several shops to tie for would be best, but of course that means tying more flies...

Sheesh, I don't even know much about this and it's already too complicated for me to even consider -- and I bet I'm simplifying things.

I was very curious about this sport for some time now. I seen it done countless times.

Tried it. Failed.

People are constantly and relentlessly, with their greater patience and understanding tried to rub some skills fly fishing on me - but in vain.

Let's all learn the basics. DEFINITION OF TERMS!
A brief definition of certain terms that I need to know on the fly.

What is Fly Fishing?
Fly fishing is an ancient method and distinct angling, developed primarily for salmonids (trout and salmon, mostly) and now extended to other species such as pike, bass, and carp, as well as a wide range of saltwater species.

Fly casting is seizing or holding a fly rod correctly and adopt correct positions to maintain comfort and balance. The most fundamental rule in the casting is based on how a clock looks. Fly fishing is a skill that is achieve thru use of right equipment, right angle precision, and right fly tying. Techniques of fly fishing and fly tying are learned easily when following the right steps and guidelines. Before the learning the right techniques in fly fishing, one must learn the right tying of the knot in order to be attached to the fly-fishing tackle.

Below are different types of knot to make to be attached to the fly fishing tackle.

Surgeons knot

This is the simplest knot to tie and is very strong in structure. This is usually used when the tippet is almost used up and another piece needs to be tied. The first thing to do is to overlap two lines with tag ends on opposite direction. This should be approximately 6 inches in length. Then, a loop is made where the right side is passed over and around the left side twice. The last step is to pull on all 4 ends of the knot and moisten it to make it hold together. The tag ends will then be clipped close to the knot.

Nail Knot

Then the backing line is laid along with the needle and then a turn is made to secure and hold all pieces together. I mixed up by so many Fishing Reels.Help!?

I heared so many fishing reels like spincast reel,spinning reel,surfcasting reel,jigging reel,big game reel/trolling reel,fly reel,baitcaster reel.What are the difference?I really wanna know the difference of the Jigging Reel and the Trolling Reel,baitcaster reel and the trolling reel.Does surfcasting reel the same with the spinning reel?I think the same reel with different fishing lures for different types of fishing,it will have different names,am I right?
Could someone list me all the lures,different lures for different fishing types?

These are your basic fishing reels:

Spinning reels or some times called open faced reels - a good all around reel. The correct size will handle most fish.

Spin cast reels or some times called closed faced reels - usually not as well built as spinning reels. A good choice for lite duty fishing like panfish. Most kids learn to cast with these reels because of ease of use.

Bait cast reels - designed to cast 3/8 oz. lures or heavier. A little harder to use but once mastered you can cast further and more accurate. A favorite of Pro bass fisherman.

Trolling reels - any reel can be used for trolling , often refered to as a level wind reel {similar to a bait cast reel} these reels can have a line counter on them which counts the amount of feet you have out.

Surf reels - can be either spinning or casting reels, the size to match the species you are fishing for.

Fly reels - a special reel to hold your fly line, different sizes or weight # to match you fly rods, these reels are made with and with out a drag.

Fly fishing is a very old method of fishing that is particularly effective for hauling in trout. Ponds, streams, rivers and lakes are best for trout.
