Bamboo or synthetic for fly fishing?

This is what is known as a Loaded Question. This question is often answered by very strong opinions and almost religious devotion.

Also, the lack of detail in your question makes it somewhat more difficult to answer well. Are you shopping for performance, overall experience, value? What kind of fishing do you do? These details would help to give an informed answer.

In terms of performance, graphite is the best all-around material for fly rods. It's very light, very strong, and it's very very resistant to bending, which gives it a "bendable stiffness" that allows for very accurate and long-range casting. It will also maintain its performance traits for zillions of repetitions. Not only is bamboo softer and more bendy, it will also lose its resistance to bending over time. Bamboo is an excellent material for fly rods, but fiberglass and graphite rods were developed to improve upon the performance characteristics of bamboo, and they did. That's all that really needs to be said. A lot of people will say that a well-made bamboo rod has certain, indefinable qualities, but that is a question of overall experience, not objective performance. If you put the best bamboo rod and the best graphite rod in a test of elasticity, durability, weight, strength, etc., the graphite rod will win.

For an overall experience, you may find that bamboo is a finer material. For one thing, if you get a high-quality bamboo rod, it will likely be custom made for you. This is very rewarding, or I would imagine it is (I don't have any kind of custom rod). Knowing that there is not another rod exactly like yours would be a great thing. There is also something special about using "primitive" gear, made of natural materials, and getting the same results as from contemporary gear made from manmade materials. I would never deny that nostalgia is an advantage of bamboo rods. Similarly, I like to shoot archery, and I much prefer my hardwood longbow with homemade arrows to any equipment that contains fiberglass, aluminum, etc. However, when it comes to fly fishing, I will only move to bamboo after I have figured out everything I want to learn from graphite rods. I know I am going to take a hit in performance when I move to bamboo, so I want to be as good at casting as I can be. I also want to wait until all my kids have left the house before I drop $1000+ on a bamboo rod -- I don't want there to be any chance of them breaking it. Heh heh.

Regarding cost, it is probably easier to get a high-quality graphite rod for a "reasonable" price than a high-quality bamboo rod. You can get a pretty nice graphite rod, for instance, for $200-$300, while a bamboo rod at the same price point would likely be of low quality. Bamboo rods costing $3,000 are not uncommon. You can throw thousands of dollars at either kind of rod, and you can cheap-out on either kind, and I wouldn't recommend doing either one of those. Shop around, research, try out as much as you can, and then get the best gear you can afford without being excessive.

How do I set up a fly rod?

I have backing(how much do i use) fly line(how much do i use)and a tapered leader with a loop in the thick end...help me i am clueless

How to set up a fly rod--------------

Can you go to a person who knows what they are doing to get help? If so, I would strongly recommend it. Otherwise, give this a try. You need to learn it anyway.

Did you buy a package deal, that gave you a rod, reel, backing, line, leader and flies?

Or, did you buy separate pieces.

If you bought the package deal, then everything should match up, however I have seen some all-in-one outfits that were not fit to be called fly rods.

If you bought separate pieces, then I hope someone guided you through the purchases. Like is the fly rod the size (as in the weight of the rod, not the actual weight (yes, here is where you start scratching your head trying to figure out what I am saying) but the indicated weight of the rod. Like is it a 5 weight or a 6 weight, or did you buy a specialty rod, like a 2 or 3 weight or a 8 or 9 weight?

What kind of fish you are going for, is the determining factor in what size rod to buy.

Then your reel has to match up fairly close to the rod. Reels are sold with designators indicating that they are for a 5 or 6 weight or a 7 to 8 weight or a 2 to 3 weight rod. This is important. You can not use a 2/3 weight reel on a 6 weight rod. The line will totally fill the reel and there will be no room for backing or anything else. Also, the reel helps balance the rod while you are casting. So, if you have an ultra light reel on a heavy rod, the balance of the reel is going to be way up the rod somewhere, not down at the cork handle you are holding on to. That means you will have a hard time casting and wear yourself out faster than you should.

So, let's hope the reel matches the rod.

Eric is right, use the Arbor knot to tie on the backing to the center spool of your reel. But first, do you want to reel this in with your right hand, thus holding the rod with your left hand, or do you want to reel it in with your left hand holding the rod with your right hand? I am going to assume you are right handed, if not the question simply needs to be reversed.

With small fish you can get away with casting with your strong hand and then switching the rod over to your other hand to reel in the line when you have a fish on. However, if you are going after big fish, then it is best to hold the rod with your strong hand and reel with your other hand, since it is your strong hand that has to hold the rod during the fight. Your muscles and mind-hand coordination are better with your strong hand.

Stop right here: You want to have at least one guide to put your backing through before you tie you it to the reel, so make sure you thread the backing and later the line through a guide. Some rods require you to put two pieces together to get a guide to use.

The line has to come off the bottom of the reel. Let's say you are right handed and decided to reel in with your left hand (best choice). Tie the backing on so the line comes onto the reel from the bottom front and wraps up behind the reel then back out the top front, tie your arbor knot.

Reel in all of your backing if it is a complete outfit, otherwise you will have to play around with finding the right amount of backing. The papers that came with your reel should tell you how much backing in 20 pound Dacron or 30 pound Dacron your reel will take, but how are you to know how much you have reeled on? (I usually take my reel to my local fly shop and have them load it for me).

The backing serves two purposes. First, it helps fill the reel with line so your fly line does not have to be wound up in such small circles (that really causes a problem with the line). Also, if you hook into a big one or hook a tree or rock then you have some extra line to play with to get to shore or back up to where you snagged up the line. Fly lines are expensive and you do not want to be loosing those.

Eric is right, the nail knot is an excellent knot to use to tie the backing onto the fly line. In fact, once you learn to tie the knots, then you can tie two nail knots in a row onto your fly line. If the first nail knot should fail, the second one should hold.

Below are some websites you can go to in order to learn to tie the knots you need to learn. Practice with some string, two different colored ones if you can, and learn how to tie the knots we mention.

You now have the backing tied onto your line. Usually there is a little tag that mentions which end should be tied to the backing. If not, then if you are using a weight forward line, the backing gets tied to the end that has the really long and slender line. The other end has a very short slender line then very quickly thickens up, then slowly thins back down. That is the end you tie your leader onto.

So, tie your backing onto your fly line and now you need to reel it in. I prefer to take a small long box and punch a pencil or small 1/4 inch dowel through one side, push on your lines plastic holder then push the pencil out the other side. Now your line will come off the spool nice and straight and not twist on you.

Once you have reeled in all the line, now you will find out if you used too much backing because your line will not fit smoothly onto the reel. Best bet, strip your line out, and then take off some backing, cut it and tie the line back onto the backing and reel it in again.

Now you come to your leader. It has a loop on it you said. That makes it handy, but then you have to have a loop on the line or you can not use it. Some lines being made now have loops built into them. If you do not have one of those, then the best thing you can do is tie a short piece of mono onto your fly line then tie in a loop at the other end.

For now, use the nail knot to tie the mono to your line. The thicker the leader, the fewer the wraps you need to form a nail knot, but the rule of thumb is 4 or 5 turns. You can buy a nail knot tool, I would strongly recommend it, and it makes tying nail knots super easy with just a little practice. The key to any nail knot is to pull the tag end of the leader quickly and smoothly. If you go slow you end up with a horrible looking knot. If you practice ahead of time, you will tie a good looking nail knot.

For a short piece of mono I have often just cut off a foot of my leader, the thick end, and tied it to my line, then tied in a small loop using a Perfection Loop knot. If the leader came with a loop, then you have a built in loop, but you will then have to tie a Perfection Knot loop back into your leader.

It is important that this short, 4 to 5 inch piece of leader be just about as thick as the line, you can not use a real limp and small size piece of mono. If you do you will not be able to transfer the power of the cast into your leader.

If you are going to tie on a tippet to the other end of the leader I suggest learning the Blood Knot or the Improved Surgeon's Knot. The blood knot may be the best one to use.

When putting the rod together, line up the guides and push the pieces together with an equal amount of pressure from both hands. The guides have to line up for proper casting. After an hour or so of casting, make sure you test the sections to keep them from slowly coming apart.

Now tie on a small piece of yarn and learn how to cast.

The most natural way of going about fly fishing is by using the popular bamboo fly fishing rods which are distinctive because they are made out of 100% natural bamboo with the necessary metallic reinforcements. The natural bend that a bamboo has makes it ideal for catching fish and for this reason, bamboo fly fishing rods are considered one of the top fishing rods in the market. However, the main reason that such rods are not used much is that bamboo rods are quite expensive to manufacture considering the detailed work that is required in their construction.

Bamboo fly fishing rods need to be carefully handled and then dried in a dry storage area. One is also required to ensure that all the parts of the bamboo are properly aligned. My family uses fly rods and reels for trolling every day on Moosehead Lake in Maine. You can use either floating line for the salmon on top, or lead-line for those a little deeper. Nail a nice one with your line out as far as the filler line, and hold on for one of the most fun-filled retrieves you can get!

Are you thinking of planning a fishing vacation? For the uninitiated, fly fishing is an 'old as the hills' fishing method traditionally used to catch trout and salmon. Although nowadays folks plan a fly fishing vacation to catch several other species, including bass and span fish as well as the big salt water game, such as marlin. Even sharks have been known to get hooked using the traditional fly fishing method. So, when planning for an enjoyable fishing vacation it is important to consider your options thoroughly, first and foremost!

Destination

This is an important part of the decision because it dictates technique as well as the equipment you will need to take along on your vacation. Do some homework on the destination. Find out if the water is fresh or salty - open ocean or river or lake. Before you hand over your money, make sure it has been clarified exactly what you are getting for it. There are plenty of great lodges and resorts available. It is even possible to charter a boat to dramatically boost your odds of success.

Equipment

There is quite a bit of specialized equipment needed. Of course, as you would expect, there's the fly fishing rod! Do not just consider the price of the rod. When buying a rod, the length and the weight differs depending on the territory. When fishing in deeper waters, such as the lakes and oceans, a longer and heavier rod is recommended.

The second item you 'must have' is a sturdy reel, which is used to hold the fly line. Like the rods, prices and uses will vary.

Finally, do not forget waders or wading boots because the world will be a much colder place without them, that's for sure! Waders also provide protection from slipping.

Techniques

The techniques for fly fishing will differ depending on whether the sport is being conducted in a lake, stream or a river. In general, however, fish will be found in areas where there is protection from predators, a good source of food and a slow moving current.

Many of the vendors for the various types of fishing destination spots also provide guides to augment your experience with theirs. Guided tours are frequently offered, although expect them be a little more expensive. Even so, especially for beginners, it is advisable to at least consider the option. Along with some good planning, it invariably will ensure full enjoyment of your fly fishing vacation.

What is the foregrip, and what is the reargrip, on a double handed fly rod?

On a double handed rod the reel sits further forward than in your diagram, allowing for the rear grip behind the reel.

For example a right hander would place the right hand (fore grip) at the front of the rod handle. The left hand (rear grip) is then positioned on the handle at the rear, behind the fly reel.

The fly rod, the symbol of the sport of fly fishing. The power transfer rod and control of fishing by the line of flight. So that the energy and maintain adequate control must use the fishing rod for your type of fishing.

The action means that means you can get a mouse high floating fly # 2 of approximately 25 feet. Flies in the size range of 2 to 6 is my choice for largemouth bass. Whether you float or sink. Lots of feathers and lots of hair.

Setting this value to a 6wt rod, weight forward floating fly line on the reel action 6wt only 50 to 100 feet Dacron support.

Use a leader without conical node 7 to 9 feet 0x or 1x created with 12 to 16 inches with 0x or 1x Tippet linked to the end.

These are the foundations and in this configuration can turn flies in the size range 2 to 10. Once you hook the first time on a fly rod are addicted too.

* Working for the good of a fishing rod, not the first guide, "stripping guide. There are three effects of the guides fly rod, and are following:

* To maintain the fishing line to the rod during casting.

* To funnel the line along the length of the rod while shooting (or casting) online (the release of an additional line for more distance).

Fly fishing is absolutely never complete without a fly fishing rod. A rod has several specifications and parts as well so before you decide on taking a splash for the fish you just canÂ’t wait to get your hook in to, be sure you have an idea what your rod is really made of.

First, although fly rods have different shapes and sizes; some are longer, heavier or more colorful than the others, the different parts of a rod doesnÂ’t change at all. The important part of the rod is referred to the rod blank. It is the central shaft of the rod and itÂ’s where everything, where the rest of the rod is attached. Rod blanks is also called the tip and then the heavy section is called the butt. Generally, blanks are made of graphite but there are still other materials that can be used.

Next is the reel seat. This is located at the butt of the rod. The purpose of this is for the fly reel; the rings found on this part are meant to lock the reel and the foot in place. The material used for reel seats can be either graphite or metal. Then we have the rod handle. This is located just right above the reel seat. This part of the rod also varies in different sizes and shapes. You can find different materials for this one. For more expensive rods, the usual material used on this part is made of rubber. But for the usual cases, (rods that are less expensive) cork is the more common material.

And lastly, the rod guides. These are attached to the rod blank. The purpose is to “guide” the fly line through them. As always, this part of the fly fishing rod varies in shapes too. You’ll also notice that the first guide is identical to the ones found on conventional fishing rods. What they are referred to as well is stripping guides. For the rest of the rod, the wire used is thin and it’s usually addressed as snake guides. The last guide found at the tip of the rod is called the tip top.

who makes willow creek fly rods?

Not sure who makes the blanks..... I'm guessing they are imported.
Willow creek fly rods come in kits that you build yourself from www.flyrodkits.com

I saw one on e-bay that was cheap. The reel seat looked chintzy
and I'm assuming the hardware is also. Best bang for the buck is Temple Forks. Sage makes a both the FLI and the Launch series which are reasonbly priced. St. Croix also makes the Avid and the Reign series which are good value for the dollar.

If you're determined to build one, I really like the Cabela's FT
(fast action) series, you can get the kit for about $105

Every American knows what Walmart is, what they do and where to find one. However, in case you are an American that has lived under a rock all your life, be informed that Walmart is a super shopping center selling groceries, clothing and many common household products such as mops, brooms, desks, t.v.'s, computers etc. This article will give driving directions from the Walmart on Mechanicsville Turnpike in Mechanicsville, Va to the Walmart on Brooke Rd., in Richmond, Va.

So you want to have success driving to Walmart? The starting location will be 7430 Bell Creek Rd., Mechanicsville, Va 23211 (the Walmart off Mechanicsville Tpke). The ending location will be 7901 Brook Rd., Richmond, Va 23227. The first thing you want to do is exit out the parking lot and make a left on Mechanicsville Turnpike. Stay in the right lane and take the 295 North Exit. Keep right on 295 North and exit at 43 C. Exit 43 C will put you off at Brooke Rd. As soon as you can make a U-Turn. After the U-Turn, stay on Brook Rd. Keep driving until you see the Walmart. It will be on the left side of the road. As a landmark and reference, know that you are close when you pass the Hardees. Also, you will come up on the Walmart after crossing Parham Rd.

Now, you have found success driving to Walmart. Now, you want to find success with having a wonderful shopping experience there. Your shopping experience will be enhanced if you are the type of person who likes to be around people. If you visit the Walmart on Brook Rd. during the day, there will certainly be a lot of people there. So being patient and social are great traits to have while at Walmart. Do not expect to fly through lines when you are ready to buy.

Collecting old fishing tackle and lures is an interesting and natural extension to the sport of fishing. It has been one of the most unexploited areas of collecting in America. And, luckily there have been millions upon millions of pieces of tackle lures handcrafted and made since the early fishing days so there is still plentiful supply of nice examples to go around. To get started, try some old "general stores", drugstores (used to carry bass plugs), bait shops and hardware stores in your area, especially their storerooms, attics, basements and storage area. There has been many a treasured fishing lure turn up by feeling around a dusty top shelf storage rooms.

Many fisherman still use a vintage reel and some use them for reasons besides performance. Vintage reels are solid reels but the fact is that parts are hard to come by. Fly fishing?

I was wondering about all the diffrent types of fly rods, line , and reels and what makes some so expencive and some fairly cheep. I have a 5 piece 8' 6'' #5 graphite White River Indian Point combo it came with a rod, reel ,line leader, and case. It cost about $100. I was considering upgrading my line and mabey my rod soon. But before I even think about that I want to know what am I going to get out of a $100 rod compared to one I have now and compared to one of those $350+ dollar ones. And compared to a reel I have now or a much more expensive ones like $250. And the line should probley be a diffrent question all together but I was thinking this is probley the most important part of the rod setup so could I get some advice on the line. So basically I was wonder What I will get out a rod that cost just as much as a whole set of things just like mine. And I relly don't see the between the two besides a few things like flexability length weight, and most importantly the price.

Before it was due to materials amongst other things such as craftsmanship. Nowadays you can purchase a decent fly rod by top brands such as Redington for less than $100.00. Reels however I would not skimp. It depends on the Weight and length of the rod and line in question. You probably made a good choice purchasing a #5 weight line for it is the most versatile. It's sensitive and light enough to use in smaller creeks and rivers where you would want to use a #3 weight but durable enough to use in larger rivers. As with anything you usually get what you pay for to a point. If you are a beginner I would probably pass on a $300.00 St. Croix, Redington or G Loomis. The best way to pick a rod and reel for you is to go to a shop that will allow you to try the setup you are planning on purchasing. I work for Sportsman's Warehouse and we will set up the outfit you are interested in purchasing and allow you to try it out. As for reels for under $200.00 I would recommend a G Loomis Venture series I have a 5 weight on my Redington 9" 5 weight with Laser Line. The line you definitely do not want to skimp. The reel Will run you about $120.00 or so and the Line will run you about $60.00. Ross also makes moderately priced reels that have a good warranty on them.
