How many of you put a different wt.fly line on your fly rod?

I heard from some people that a fly rod is specifically made only for the weight of line that is marked on the rod and other weights simply won't work. I also have seen on other websites that say that you can use one wt above what is marked and one weight below what is marked on the rod. I have a 6 wt tip heavy rod that I think would prefer a 7 wt. Any of you use different weights than what is marked? If so, have you had much success with the change in weights?

it does effect it greatly as it wont cast as well i always prefer to use size 7

The first thing most people learn in fly fishing is how to tie flies, but learning to set up your rod should really be the first step.

The very first thing you need to learn about setting up and using your fly fishing equipment is that there is always two ways to do everything involved with the sport. Well, maybe not always, sometime there are three or more ways to do it. Every fly fishing book you read will give you a slightly different take on the best way to do everything. This duality runs through the entire sport. There are two types of rods; there are two types of reel; there are two types of line, etc.

The key to rod selection and set up is the type of fishing that is going to be done. It would be great if there was a one rod fits all types of fishing situation here, but this is just not the case. The rod length might be around six feet for fishing small streams and up to fifteen feet when fishing salt water flats. The most recent trend in fly fishing rods is toward shorter and lighter rods as fishing in smaller bodies of water for different species has become popular. Still, you need to match the rod to the type of fishing you are planning or else expect to get several rods of different sizes.

The beginner is going to do best with a medium size rod. This will usually serve him for the first couple of years. He will be able to use it for both smaller and larger bodies of water and fish sizes. He will not have the best choice for either extreme, but will be safely in the middle no matter where he is fishing. As his own experience grows, he can select a rod more in line with his fishing interest.

When you are learning how to set up a fly fishing rod, give special attention to the line selection. Unlike casting rods, the line is more known for other attributes than just break strength. Quality line is essential. The big problem is what is called reel memory. The line must be played out fairly straight and natural to give the best presentation of the fly. Reel memory is where the line twists when played out due to being wound on the reel. Higher quality fly fishing line has virtually no reel memory.

The actual line is not attached directly to the spool as in casting reels. Rather it is attached to another section of line called the backing. Knowledge of knots is essential to preparing the fly rod. The Boy Scout merit badge illustrates this point as it requires that you demonstrate three different style knots. The backing is attached to the fly reel spool with an arbor backing knot. Then the backing is attached to the actual fly line with a nail knot. A short leader is attached to the end of the actual fly line with any one of three different knots. Finally, the fly itself most be attached to the leader.

There are plenty of things you can do and enjoy in Santa Fe, the capital of New Mexico. You get a chance here to step up your knowledge and develop the artist in you by attending workshops and classes. Sharpen up your photography, dance, and calligraphy knacks. Or, develop your love for writing, classic literature and archeology methods. You can also learn the art of pottery or paint. Discover a yoga stance or learn to throw a fly fishing rod.

If you are the type who loves the outdoor adventures, Santa Fe is a haven for you. Unearth a profusion of Mother Nature so close to the metropolitans center. You can go horse back riding then saunter the city recreation parks to unwind. Go out hiking, biking and skiing to the scenic wilderness of Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

In winter, ski the Rocky Mountains and skate on the Hyde Memorial State Park pond. Summer time offers a pleasurable trek down or a thrilling ride on the chairlift up the mountain of stunning views. Propel the Rio Grande waters. Play golf on courses that have some of the United States most stunning views. Santa Fe Country Club, Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club, and Quail Run Golf Course are some of the finest courses in the state.

There is more. You can provide your physical, mental, and spiritual being a fantastic workout during your trip in the city by stopping at one of its fitness facilities. The biggest recreational center in Santa Fe, the Genoveva Chavez Community Center, offers Pilates, ice skating, swimming, and kayaking classes. The city has over fifty scenic parks which include district, historical and sports parks. Canyon Road, for instance, features loads of stores and superb galleries, as well as museums and dining places. While at the stretch of land down the river of Santa Fe River State Park, tourists can picnic and leisurely walk on the tree-bordered paths. Salvador Perez Park is a much loved family nook for kids and kids at heart. It has picnic amenities, playground, a genuine engine car, and a Little League arena.

Santa Fe features numerous sites for the kids and these include parks and trails for biking, trekking, skating and skiing. Two Skateboard Parks, for example, offer skateboarding fun for children. Kids museums feature original activities, exhibits and storytelling series that allow for fun and insightful learning. Families and children can also gain knowledge of preparing New Mexican foods such as chili sauce and tortillas at the Santa Fe School of Cooking.

You can go shopping for farm fresh produce, dairy, crafts and more at the popular city's Farmers Market. August is a perfect time to shop here where a good number of farmers vend amazingly fresh greens, tomatoes, corn, mushrooms, natural chicken plus other edible treats. Or, see and taste Indian Market, the biggest Native American art market on earth, where galleries and tribal arts and performance are witnessed. The yearly Santa Fe Indian Market pulls approximately a hundred thousand guests from all over the world and is the biggest jamboree of Native American artists.

The city offers many historical places where you can experience rich American history. These run from remains of Wild West, Civil War, mining towns, primeval Native American to Spanish Colonial ministers.

At Santa Fe, there is no end to the multiplicity of outdoor thrills, road trips, yearly events, workshops, and interactive activities for adults and children.

As the weather begins to warm up and fishing season approaches, it's time for every angler to start getting their gear organized. One of the things that should be done every year is to clean your fishing reels. If you take the hour or so to clean your fishing reel before the start of the fishing season, it will add year's to the life of the reel. I've got fishing reels that I paid less than $50 for and are over ten years old and still work like new. Why is that? Because I take care of them and take the little bit of time it actually takes to clean and grease them every year. Cleaning a fishing reel is very simple, here's a list of what you need :

1 Small Phillips Head Screwdriver
2 or 3 clean towels
5 or 6 Q-tips
Some Paper Towels
WD-40 or a small tube of Reel Grease

Begin by removing the fishing reel from the fishing rod. Now find a nice clean area to work, such as the kitchen table and lay out 2 of the clean towels. One of the towels is to work on and the other is to place parts so they don't get misplaced. The first thing that must be removed is the handle of the reel. It will either be held on by a screw that you unscrew with your fingers or you simply turn the handle counterclockwise and back it out. Once removed, place the handle and screw that held it in (if there is one) on the second clean towel.

At this point, take the third clean towel and some warm water and wipe the entire reel off well. If you're using WD-40, you can spray a bit on the outside of the reel before wiping. We simply want to clean the reel and remove any debris that might be present. Now turn the reel onto the side that the screws are visible. There are normally four small Phillips head screws. Simply remove the screws and place them on the clean towel so you know where they are. Once the screws are removed you should notice how the screws were holding the reel together. Simply remove the plate and place it on the clean towel as well.

Now the inner workings of the reel are exposed. You should notice a couple of gears and such. At this point you want to use a couple of your Q-tips to remove any sand, dirt, or debris that can be seen. Once that's done, you want to grease the gears in the reel. Just add a couple of drops to each moving gear. If you're using wd-40, simply spray a small amount on each gear. Now simply reverse the process.

With your fishing reel back together, you're done! It's that simple to clean your spinning reel. It should work as well as it ever has after being cleaned, and will work like that for the entire fishing season. As I said, if you do this before every fishing season, your fishing reels will last for years. If your fishing reel was acting up before cleaning and continues to not work properly after cleaning, it may be time to think about getting a new one. On many occasions, just giving them a good cleaning solves many fishing reel problems.

As with most forms of fishing you will need to know about the equipment, in particular the rod, reel and line. Tackle suitable for other forms of fishing is generally not suitable for fly fishing.

The fly rod is the means by which to deliver the fly in a cast, the line and is the tension controller after the fish has been hooked. Rods are usually made from either phenol impregnated bamboo, hollowed fibreglass and carbon fibre or graphite. The only real difference between these types for the beginner are the cost and the maintenance methods. The fibreglass rod is recommended for the beginner, basically due to the lower cost. The beginner can master his casting technique without incurring large costs. The rod should weigh about 140 grams and should have 7 line guides as well as the tip. The reel seat should be at the very end of the butt, with no projection to inhibit casting or to tangle the line.

G were made of plaited pure silk impregnated with pure linseed oil, which was allowed to harden. Plastic coated lines have been in almost universal use since the introduction of synthetics. The lines are made from woven nylon or terylene centre with a breaking strain of 10 kg (22 lbs). A plastic material containing air bubbles coats the centre, the quantity of bubbles being varied to make the line either float or sink. The control with this type of manufacturing enables the sinking lines to be either fast, medium or slow and come in varying colours according to their use.

The lines are also tapered and the various tapers are suitable for varying types of casts, the double tapered line being the most widely used. The weight of the line is the controlling factor when seeking a balanced combination between the rod and line. The standard identifying system now is use is a combination of a numbers and letters. Which stand for weight and type of line. Rod manufacturers usually indicate which weight line is best suited to each rod, the graphite rod being more versatile than the cane or glass rods. The code DT6F indicates a size 6 double taper, floating line; DT6S a sinking line of the same style and weight.

The fly line is usually quite bulky and brightly coloured and to avoid scaring the fish by the splash and the bright colour, a leader should be used to separate the line and the fly. This leader is a tapered monofilament line and continues the taper from the line down to the fly. Reels are necessary but not an important part of the gear, basically they are just a storage device for the line. The line is controlled by hand and wound on the reel when not in use. The weight od the rod and reel should be such that it feels balanced An incorrectly weighted road and reel will lead to inaccurate casts and a very frustrated fisherman. A reel should be of sufficient size to hold a good quantity of line and have a good line guard.

Safety is paramount and the learner should not practice casting with a fly on the line unless the point, barb and bend have been removed. A substitute for a fly is even better. No need for water to practice your casts and a football ground or park will suffice so long as the surface is grassed and the line isn't being retrieved across gravel or dirt.

The three fundamentals for casting a fly are: the rod acts as a long spring, the whole line acts as the weight or sinker or lure of other types of fishing and the timing of the action.

Fly rod problem.......?

Ok then here goes, my son wants to start fly fishing for rainbows on my local still water.I took him and let him used my sage 690 z-axis (thought i wasnt going to see it again) any way now that he has been he wants to go more often so i need to get him a cheap rod (not too cheap) i have figured he needs a 7wt about 9-10 feet with a middle to tip action, the makes i w as think about are; reddington, sharpes of aberdeen, orvis western 2 and maybe diawa any advice would be helpful thanks.
i think pheasant tail has got it in one and the sage launch seems very appealling i would be grateful if any one else could verify that this a a good choice

take it from a long time duck hunter. you DO NOT want to duck hunt in anything less than 3.5 mm neoprene waders. 5 mm is even better. and i wouldnt consider anything except the boot foot, lug sole style. look for insulation in the boot too. those thin fishing waders are just for staying dry, they are intended for warm water use.

if you are only going to buy one pair of waders, make it the heaviest most durable pair you might need. always better to have too much wader instead of not enough. i have seen several guys try to save money and go hunting in those thin fishing waders. they always rip, or dont keep them warm enough, no matter how many layers they use. there is a reason that duck waders look different from fishing waders. but duck waders are plenty for fishing, and fishing waders arent nearly enough for duck hunting.

Do you really need fly fishing waders?

You already have your fly rod, your line, reel, and luresÂ… do you really need any other fly fishing gear? Do you really need fly fishing waders? If you only fish in warm climates or during the summer, you may very well want to avoid investing in a pair of fly fishing waders. You may, instead, decide to get a pair of felt-bottomed sandals or boots, and then simply tolerate the refreshing chill of the water.

If, however, you tend to do most of your fly fishing in colder water or you simply do not want to get wet, then it can be worth buying a good pair of fly fishing waders. Of course, before you go out and buy a pair of fly fishing waders, note that it is better to not wade at all. Yes, it is sometimes necessary to get to certain good spots. But, overall, wading can destroy aquatic life that an important part of the diet of the very trout that you are trying to catch.

Getting the boot? Or putting a sock in it?

You must decide between bootfoot waders and stockingfoot fly fishing waders. The benefit of bootfoot waders is that the boot is built right into the waders, and you therefore will not have to go out and buy a separate set of river wading shoes. Stockingfoot fly fishing waders, on the other hand, do require a separate boot to go along with them. The benefit of these waders is that you have much more flexibility in the types of waders that you wear with different types of shoes and vice versa. Also, they can be turned inside out to dry.

Goldilocks and the three styles of fly fishing waders.

There are three common lengths of fly fishing waders. There are chest waders, waist waders, and hip waders. Goldilocks may try on a pair of Chest waders and decide that they are just to high and hard to get on and off. Although, they are great for wading into deeper waters. Then Goldilocks may try on a pair of hip waders. For her, although these fly fishing waders are easy to get on and off and are very comfortable, she wants to move into slightly less shallow water. When Goldilocks finally tries on waist waders, she realizes that they are just right.

A material matter.

One more consideration for buying fly fishing waders is “which material.” Neoprene is an excellent material waterproof material that is especially nice for colder waters. Of course, the problem with neoprene is that it is not very breathable. Breathable fly fishing waders are becoming more and more popular, made from high-tech materials like Gore-Tex.
