When it comes to fishing, Greenwich resident Ryan Keller is . . . well . . . hooked. Fly fishing, spin fishing, junking and trolling, he does it all -- from dawn to dusk.

Fly Fishing Patterns

No one really knows when fly fishing first began. It is believed that it existed long ago in ancient times. One of the earliest written references to fly fishing was made by Claudius Aelianus. In 200 AD he wrote of people that were fishing in a river with a hand made fly. He described how they attached red wool and feathers to a hook. The rods they used and the sting attached were each about six feet long. These people were the ancient Macedonians. Throughout history from Aelianus to the present people have been writing about fly fishing, and many thousands of others have been enjoying the sport.

The Princess of Soapwell, English, was an avid fly fisherman. Her name was Dame Juliana Berners and she was a master at her sport. At the time Columbus was searching for the New World, Dame Juliana was publishing an extensive treatise on the art of fly fishing. In her treatise she described the twelve styles of fly and included extensive instructions on how to tie them. She patterns were put into categories by the month that they were used most often.

She also described the rod that was used for fly fishing during that time. It measured about 18 feet long and was very flexible, The rods were made of several different types of wood which added to their flexibility. Their lines were short, by today's standards, and were made of hand braided horse hair. The general rule of the time was that the line should not be longer then the fishing rod. The line was tied to the tip of the pole.

Many fly fishermen of today have used her patterns for the fly. They say they are just as effective today as they were more than five hundred years ago. Several of the more popular patterns include the Black Gnat, the Wooly Worm, the Stonefly and the Whirling Dun.

In the mid 1600's Isaak Walton published his book "Compleat Angler." Throughout history from then on, Izaak Walton has been considered the patron saint on angling, and of fly fishing in particular. In truth, it was actually his friend, Charles Cotton, that had contributed the portion of the book that pertained to fly fishing. The flies and rods described in this book were very similar to those described by Dame Juliana. However, the lines described were slightly different. They were still made of horsehair but were about six feet longer then those of the 1400's. The main difference was that some of the lines were tapered. It is believed that this was the first time tapered lines were described in writing.

In the early 1800's, fishing line makers began mixing silk in with the horsehair. By the time of the Civil War the first all silk lines were made. They were coated with an oily coating which made them water resistant. Horsehair lines were almost never used after that. Occasionally they were found in England up to World War II.

The first nylon line was made in 1948 and from that point forward synthetic materials have been used by most people for fly fishing. In 1952, a technology was created that made an automatically tapered line withe extreme precision.

Fish that is in Canada fishing or fly patterns?

My friends like me. ty flys for some travel in Canada, but his. i dont know help in any form.

Wooley bugger always a good choice all around to work with everything. Tye in many different sizes and use hook and black olive.

Blue Wing Olive

what kind of fly fishing hatches do BWO's have?

during these last months of fishing season i never know what fly to use because i never run in to a hatch and personally i prefer to use dries its alot more fun to fish them because you can see the take on the fly (i do nymph once and a while)and since the only fly that hatches through these months in my area is the Blue WInged Olive and i was wondering if the BWO's hatch like caddis and only a few come up at a time or are they like most of the other mayflies that they all hatch at once

Caddisflies and mayflies can hatch in great numbers or they can emerge in smaller waves, depending on the species, weather, water conditions, time of year, etc. I've seen hatches so subtle I almost missed them, and I've seen hatches so dense that the fish rarely saw my fly because of so many naturals.

It's important to understand that the Blue Wing Olive pattern does not imitate any one mayfly. Instead it imitates the entire Baetidae family of mayflies. Most mayflies in this family have olive-colored bodies and glassy, bluish wings, so the BWO pattern in various styles and sizes does a great job of imitating them, but the hatching cycle and the hatch size will vary with species and conditions.

It's also important to know that BWO's are more useful fall through spring than in the summer. Depending on where you are, caddisflies are typically a better summertime dry, while mayfly action more often occurs September through May, so I'm not surprised that you haven't seen any big mayfly hatches in the past few months.

The life cycle of most mayflies is basically the same. They live as crawly little larvae down in the rocks, where they feed on algae or tiny plankton or whatever. When it's time to hatch, they develop into pupae, swim free of the bottom and float up. Once at the surface, they split open their pupal shuck, puncture the surface tension, and emerge onto the water as an adult (or dun). The dun spends a short time on the water surface (while its body hardens) and then it flies away to mate. The fertilized females (or spinners) return later, bouncing on the water to lay their eggs. Some of them sit on the surface and some of them actually go into the water to lay.

There are fly patterns that imitate every single stage of the mayfly life cycle, and you should try to fish them all -- you never know what the fish are going to be keyed on. If you are really determined to get some dry mayfly fishing, it's best to go in afternoons and evenings in fall or spring. The duns will typically come out in the afternoon and then there will be a lull while the flies are in the air mating. Spinnerfall usually occurs in the early evening -- it's sort of the classic dry fly scene.

I'm like you -- I like dry fly action more than subsurface fishing, but if your goal is to catch fish, you do yourself a disservice to ignore nymph, emerger, and cripple patterns. These can be much more productive (if less romantic) than constantly fishing a dry BWO. Good luck!

Beginner fly fishing courses are a fantastic way to be introduced to the exciting world of fly fishing and fly tying. Perhaps you've driven by your hometown streams and noticed anglers wading and casting to trout. Maybe this looked fun and interesting to you, but you don't have the faintest idea how to cast a fly and actually get a trout to eat it. Then there's that dang fly line you'll have to keep from wrapping around your feet so you don't trip and become a little more acquainted with the fish than you really want to be. If this is the case, a beginner fly fishing course might be just what you need. Here's what you can expect.

If you're a fly fishing newbie, one of the most important skills to master is learning how to cast. It's really not that hard, but it does take practice and will feel awkward at first. The good news is you don't have to be able to cast hundreds of feet to catch trout. Accuracy and being able to control your line on the water will be more important than distance in most fishing situations. Because casting is such a vital part of successful fly fishing, most beginner fly fishing courses will focus on this aspect. However, there is much more to learn if you want to catch fish consistently.

Besides learning how to cast, you'll also need to learn a thing or two about how to think like a trout. A good instructor will give you insight into how to read water to locate trout as well as give you a basic run down of how trout feed and the type of insects you'll want to imitate with your flies. You'll also be taught how to rig up your fly rod and how to attach a leader to your fly line and tippet to your leader.

With thousands of fly patterns to choose from, a good beginner fly fishing course will also teach you about flies and how to determine which flies should be used in any given situation. Oh, and let's not forget your accessory gear like waders, wading boots, and a fly vest.

The best way to learn how to fly fish is through hands on practice like you'll get by joining a fly casting class. However, many beginner fly fishing courses are expensive and can leave you with many unanswered questions. A great alternative is to look online for instructional ebooks that can help you fill in any gaps your instructor might leave out. This is also a great way to learn on your own which can be both challenging and extremely rewarding at the same time.

For a top-rated beginner fly fishing course that will have you catching more (and bigger) trout than your instructor the very first time you go out, please visit: http://www.TheFlyFishingAuthority.com.

When it comes to fly fishing in Idaho, vacations spent on the South Fork of the Snake River definitely top the list. The river starts in Yellowstone National Park and flows straight to the Palisades Reservoir via Grand Teton National Park. The South Fork is the portion of the Snake River that runs between the Palisades Dam and Henry's Fork. This is the perfect combination of big fish, great scenery, and nearby Jackson Hole lodging.

The Best Time For South Fork Fly Fishing

Fly fishing in the area begins from the last week of June to the first week of July with the appearance of the Salmon flies, Yellow Sallies, and Golden Stones. Late autumn is the favorite time to fish for many of the local fisherman since water levels are considerably lower than in the spring.

This gives anglers the chance to wade in new areas from Yellowstone National Park to Henry's Fork. The fish are ready to put up a good fight by this part of the season. In the winter, there is some shore fishing, but actually wading in the cold river isn't recommended. You will want to check the local fishing regulations to learn which portions of the river are closed.

All is not lost on the days the fish simply aren't biting. Bringing a spinning rod and reel along with a good lure will almost guarantee a successful fishing trip. The quiet days are also the perfect opportunity to get away from your Jackson Hole lodging and enjoy some of the wildlife travelling through the area. Moose, elk, and eagles are just some of the animals that peek out from the forest.

Gear Tips For South Fork Fly Fishing

Since many of the brown trout in the river weigh over ten pounds, stick to a four to five weight rod in the beginning of the South Fork fly fishing season. Tackle, on the other hand, should depend on what you see along the shoreline. Early in the season, use Salmon fly patterns such as Birds Stone and Hairy Mary on a size 4-8 hook. Nymphs such as Girdle Bugs, Stonefly Nymphs, and Black Rubberlegs can also provide you with an afternoon of aggressive fish. Fly patterns such as South Fork Sallies and Yellow Stimulators imitate the Yellow Sallies that appear at this time as well.

The later part of July and early August bring mayflys and Pale Morning Duns begin to appear. Use size 14 in July and slowly move to an 18 hook by the end of September. Try patterns such as Pink Cahill Parachute, Biot Dun, and Wooly Buggers. This is also a great time to break out the caddis like Elk Hair and Hemingway patterns. When it comes to fishing in the late fall (from August to October) think hoppers, Blue-winged Olives, and Royal Wulff in sizes ranging from 18-20.

South Fork fly fishing is some of the best in North America. The river is close to Jackson Hole lodging, Yellowstone National Park, and has plenty of large cutthroat, brown, and rainbow trout. For year-round fishing adventures, this is definitely the place to go.

Royal Wulff
Would the royal wulff work now? fly fishing?

I just started fly fishing and need to try new flies and it came in a pack. Northern New Jersey

Living where you're at right now I'd say no.
This time of year in that area your fly fishing is going to be very limited.
1rst thing in the morning until 10am you will need the following:
ant patterns - including flying ants
beatle patterns
griffith's gnats
small blue wing olives (size 20-22)
micro tan and olive caddis (size 18 and 20)

If you decide to fish the evening take some small caddis and blue wing olive patterns as well as some Isonychia (slate drake/chocolate drake)
some small sulphers and a few large stimulators just for the helluva it.

e-mail me at pheasant.tail@yahoo.com and I'll "seasonalize" you arsenal from march until november

I need help in telling if my chickens are hens or roosters?

Hello all! I bought 6 chicks right before Easter this year for my son and we bought them from the straight run. Now I am trying to sort out if they are roosters or hens. I am fairly certain that two of them are roosters judging by the hackle and saddle feathers. No one is crowing yet but someone is making a strangled sound occasionally as though trying to crow. Any help is appreciated! They are almost 4 mos. old and I do have pictures of them. They are Araucanas and Wyandottes.

This is how we did it at the farm.I find sitting down on a stool or chair easier to start. You may want to have that ready ahead of time. Most times you sex the chicken when their just days old, much less stress for you. You may need help from an extra pair of hands to hold the chicken on its back. Just then use your hand to separate the feathers where it's private parts are and apply gentle pressure. If something pops out it's a male, if it doesn't it's a female. Start with the ones you suspect are males, then you can visually tell the difference. Hope that's not too disgusting, but males usually start fighting over females and can get injured or even killed if not separated soon enough. Each male should have it's own hen or two, that way the eggs will get fertilized and will create a chick.

Fly tying is an essential tool for fly fishing. Like everything else, the design of the bait for fly fishing is to resemble a fly or a winged object that may lure the fish to taking the bait. Fly fishing has been around for more than 200 years and though there have been new technologies introduced in fly tying, such as the lure design making rare hairs or feathers that look like those of endangered species, the process of fly tying is basically the same. There are several essential tools in the fly tying process. These are the vise to hold the fly hook to be tied, magnifying glasses to see some intricate or delicate work, bobbins, hackle gauges, hackle pliers, lights, scissors and hair stackers. One may also have pliers, bodkins, floss bobbins, dubbing twisters, bobbin threaders, wing burners, whip finishers, and blenders. The old materials used in fly tying were threads, furs, feathers, yarn, tinsels, hair, wire, balsa and cork. Technology today has added other materials such as synthetic and dyed materials with the like of rubber legs, plastic wings, transparent plastic line, chenilles, and other stuff that can be mixed into the body and wings of the fly.

Artificial flies would also be incorporated with mink, rabbit, fox, bear, squirrel and other furs and or feathers coming from chicken, pheasant, goose, partridge and duck would be inserted and placed into the fly. Hence the need for the magnifying glass. Further flys would even have deer, elk and moose hair in them or neck and saddle hackle from chickens. Synthetics have allowed fly tyers to replicate such above mentioned material now to their ty. These days silicone, epoxy and Kevlar thread are being used in artificial fly patterns and weighting materials which used to be lead wire back in the day now include glass, brass and tungsten beads and cones.

The fly pattern is the template from which these items placed on a fly can be replicated in a consistent manner time and again. They are also called fly dressings. It is argued that different dressings are made for different types of fish and different weathers and seasons. These observations were made from years of experience in fly fishing, watching what available insects were present during such time that made it attractive to particular fishes. And there are undoubtedly different fly patterns when it comes to different locations and regions.

Fly tying when done right is an enjoyable time in one's little workspace, attending with great detail a bait that hopefully catches the big one when fly fishing

whats the right fly fishing line?

i have a fly rod for both spin and fly fishing( im only using it for fly fishing) i was wondering what the right line was to use.

i know theres things like 2x 3x 4x and so on....i get what it means i just dont know what to use.

i also dont know if i shoulod have sinking or floating lines.

also leader? what do i use?

i am fishing for trout in rivers, ponds and lakes

Well you need to match the weight of your fly line with the weight of your rod your using for best castability (that should be on your rod ).

I recommend a floating line for dry fly fishing.

As far as leaders go I like a tapered leader/tippet it helps with the way a fly lands on the water . Also use as small of a diameter tippet as possible ,especially in lakes and ponds.

What are terrestrials?

Strictly speaking, terrestrials are all creatures that live on land. This would, of course, include humans. However, when fly fishing for trout we are generally referring to insects and sometimes even small rodents. There are fly patterns that imitate mice that can be used to lure big trout, but they are most often used in bass fishing. The most common terrestrial flies are ants and grasshoppers (usually referred to as "hoppers" by fly anglers.) There are also patterns that imitate beetles, crickets, cicadas and worms (the green inchworm is a very effective pattern in the spring when these larvae are abundant.) There are also patterns like the Fat Albert and the Chernobyl ant which don't really imitate any specific insect but somehow work their magic in enticing trout to rise to them.

When is the best time to fish a terrestrial pattern?

Terrestrial insects don't become active until the spring. Many, like the grasshopper, don't really hit their stride until late summer. So, the best time to fish these patterns is from early spring all the way through the fall. Like most things in life, there are no absolutes. Sometimes a hopper will work in the spring. I have also caught trout with an ant pattern on winter days when there were no real ants to be found. Often times I choose to fish a terrestrial when nothing else seems to work. You may be familiar with the phrase "match the hatch." This refers to when anglers attempt to match their flies to what the trout are feeding on. Often, if your fly is the correct pattern but is too big or small it will get some looks but no strikes. This is much less of a problem with terrestrial fly fishing because the terrestrial is not usually the primary food source and any size presents a tasty morsel to hungry trout.

How should I fish Terrestrial flies?

The best place to fish terrestrials and certainly the place to start your casts is where the real bugs enter the water. Most terrestrials can't fly, and if they can it is for very short distances. So, it makes sense that most ants, inchworms, beetles and grasshoppers enter the water by falling from overhanging brush or from the side of the bank. Start casting to the opposite bank and let the fly travel with the current making sure to keep enough slack line on the water to prevent the line from pulling the fly causing it to drag against the current. This presentation of the fly is called a dead drift. If there is drag, the fly will not drift naturally and the trout will not strike your fly... usually. With Grasshoppers, often the technique used is to actually overshoot the far end of the bank and pull the fly back to the waters edge. If there is no immediate strike, often a couple of twitches on your fly line will generate some action. With the smaller flies, it is best to stick with the dead drift. Without question the water near the banks will be the most productive terrestrial fishing.

Another option is to use a larger fly as an indicator. My personal favorite is the hopper because of their abundance around the waters I fish. This fly setup is referred to as a "hopper and dropper" rig. The hopper acts not only as a standard fly, but it is also connected to the smaller "dropper" fly and is used to signify any strikes on the trailing fly. The dropper can be any nymph, wet fly, or small dry fly and is connected to the hook of the hopper by a length of tippet anywhere from 9 inches to 2 feet long. My dropper flies are usually tied on with 18 inches of tippet. If the hopper moves or stops in a sudden manner or has any unusual movement set the hook!

If you don't keep a few terrestrial flies in your fly box, you are really limiting yourself. In the very least, a few ants and grasshoppers should always find their way into your fly box. You will appreciate them on those days when you fish with nothing else because of how effective they are as well as that rare day when nothing else worked and your terrestrial saved you from a day without a catch.
