Tiemco Fly
Fly fishing dry and wet fly hooks?

I recently bought size 12 and size 16 tiemco dry fly hooks. Can I also use these hooks for nymphs (hares ear, copper john, prince nymphs etc) or do they not sink well enough?
well they sink as well as nymph hooks though.

Yes you can use them for tying nymphs, the major problem you will be facing here is hook strength as a lighter wire is used for dry flies. As for sinking you can counter that with a beadhead or if you don't want to use a bead Gehrkes makes a product called "Xink" that is used for wet flies.(Gehrkes makes "Gink" for dry flies)

Yes, they will sink as soon as the fly gets soaked. Still I reccommend either using a bead or using a regular nymph hook.

My favorite fly fishing technique in the late summer/ early fall is performed with a dry line and long leader in rather shallow water using a tiny "hyalella shrimp".

The onset of cooler weather triggers the fish to start their pre-winter gorge. Hyalella shrimp are plentiful in marl bottoms and along the shallow weed beds. In many of the Kamloops lakes you will find fish cruising in as shallow as 2 feet of water, adding "sight fishing" to dramatically intensify the experience. A good pair of polaroid glasses come in real handy too!

I don't know why the long leader makes a difference but it does. We tie our own 20' to 24' fluorocarbon tapered leaders. The fish cruise through, sometimes in schools, sometimes by themselves, picking their way along the bottom, sucking up the tiny shrimp by the hundreds.

The retrieve is probably the most important. Without using a strike indicator, just cast alongside the weed bed (or to the fish if you see them), letting the shrimp settle to the bottom. Gently tighten the line so that it straightens. With the patience of hanging a chironimid, slowly retrieve the shrimp. Let it settle occasionally and continue to retrieve. Vary the speeds from extremely slow to short, light, 2 inch bursts. If you are casting over the weeds you will have to adjust your speed accordingly to prevent a hang-up.The flies are so small that they move along quite well over the weeds as long as you keep the fly moving.

Hyalella shrimp are a food staple for rainbow trout, particularly in the fall as they flourish in the marl or in weed beds. A few times my fishing buddy K.J. and I have actually seen fish that have committed involuntary suicide pursuing a vein of shrimp in the marl. What appears to happen to them is they chase the shrimp as they retreat into the marl eventually getting their heads stuck in the marl. If the marl goes past a portion of the gill plate, the fish get stuck, like on a barbed hook, and can't back out. They then smother to death. It's a rare event to see.

Here are a list of lakes that I like to sight fish with hyalella shrimp in shallow marl in the Kamloops Area. These lakes all have white bottomed marl (except Bleeker)

Peter Hope - Huge marl flats all around the lake

Roche Lake - the south end and south east islands

Black Lake- near Roche Lake - fabulous structure around the lake

Hosli Lake - near Roche - need a 4x4 here if the road is wet or muddy. The mid-lake shoal by the rocks is also known for it's fabulous sedge hatches in June and July.

Bleeker Lake - near Roche Lake

Community Lake - extensive flats along shoreline and around the islands

...and many more.

Occasionally, when you are fishing large marl flats like at: Peter Hope lake, Roche Lake and even Community Lake, there is a possibility that you may see what I am talking about. My friend KJ and I have found a few 4-5lb fish dead, tail up and head buried, over the last couple of years. It's eerie to look at.

Be prepared for a crazy fight, especially when the fish are over 20 inches and in the shallow water. The lack of depth takes the vertical dimension away from the fish so the run horizontally, frequently in multiple circles around the boat. My personal record count is 6 complete circle tows before I landed the fish.

Hyalella shrimp have a full range of natural colours with varying degrees of natural shades. Try light beige to brown, light mint green to olive dark green or even gray or orange patterned shrimp. The late Jack Shaw(legendary fly tyer and fly fisherman) tied an "opalescent shrimp" and used it with great success. His pattern is vividly illustrated in the new book by his old friend Ralph Shaw, titled "The Pleasure of His Company". (see below)

Tiemco scud hooks-2487 and Mustad-3906B #12, #14 and #16 seem to work best for me. Body material is usually natural or synthetic dubbing or ostrich feather strands. Occasionally I will put a tiny glass bead head on the size #12's but I rarely pull a back on them... I usually just trim the material short on the top side of the hook and apply some gloss. A fine rib (clear, red, gold or silver) is acceptable but not necessary.

Another note... rainbow trout will cruise these marl shoals and weedbeds all day however they appear to be most active in low light conditions (overcast) or when the sun is in a low position... 2 hours before sunset or within 2 hours after sunrise.

It takes a lot of patience, even for experienced fishermen to master this technique but when you do, you will be well rewarded and forever smitten.

This is how we did it at the farm.I find sitting down on a stool or chair easier to start. You may want to have that ready ahead of time. Most times you sex the chicken when their just days old, much less stress for you. You may need help from an extra pair of hands to hold the chicken on its back. Just then use your hand to separate the feathers where it's private parts are and apply gentle pressure. If something pops out it's a male, if it doesn't it's a female. Start with the ones you suspect are males, then you can visually tell the difference. Hope that's not too disgusting, but males usually start fighting over females and can get injured or even killed if not separated soon enough. Each male should have it's own hen or two, that way the eggs will get fertilized and will create a chick.

Fly tying is an essential tool for fly fishing. Like everything else, the design of the bait for fly fishing is to resemble a fly or a winged object that may lure the fish to taking the bait. Fly fishing has been around for more than 200 years and though there have been new technologies introduced in fly tying, such as the lure design making rare hairs or feathers that look like those of endangered species, the process of fly tying is basically the same. There are several essential tools in the fly tying process. These are the vise to hold the fly hook to be tied, magnifying glasses to see some intricate or delicate work, bobbins, hackle gauges, hackle pliers, lights, scissors and hair stackers. One may also have pliers, bodkins, floss bobbins, dubbing twisters, bobbin threaders, wing burners, whip finishers, and blenders. The old materials used in fly tying were threads, furs, feathers, yarn, tinsels, hair, wire, balsa and cork. Technology today has added other materials such as synthetic and dyed materials with the like of rubber legs, plastic wings, transparent plastic line, chenilles, and other stuff that can be mixed into the body and wings of the fly.

Artificial flies would also be incorporated with mink, rabbit, fox, bear, squirrel and other furs and or feathers coming from chicken, pheasant, goose, partridge and duck would be inserted and placed into the fly. Hence the need for the magnifying glass. Further flys would even have deer, elk and moose hair in them or neck and saddle hackle from chickens. Synthetics have allowed fly tyers to replicate such above mentioned material now to their ty. These days silicone, epoxy and Kevlar thread are being used in artificial fly patterns and weighting materials which used to be lead wire back in the day now include glass, brass and tungsten beads and cones.

The fly pattern is the template from which these items placed on a fly can be replicated in a consistent manner time and again. They are also called fly dressings. It is argued that different dressings are made for different types of fish and different weathers and seasons. These observations were made from years of experience in fly fishing, watching what available insects were present during such time that made it attractive to particular fishes. And there are undoubtedly different fly patterns when it comes to different locations and regions.

Fly tying when done right is an enjoyable time in one's little workspace, attending with great detail a bait that hopefully catches the big one when fly fishing

Amsterdam is one of the most popular European city destinations, offering many sights to see and things to do. One can visit for the high density of museums, its canals or even its legal red light district and coffeeshops. Whatever you are looking for, tolerant Amsterdam has it.

A flight to Amsterdam is the most popular option for travellers from the UK. Out of all the Airlines to Amsterdam, Easyjet is the biggest carrier. Londoners are spoilt for choice and can opt to take an Easyjet flight from Gatwick, Standsted or Luton. After Easyjet, KLM (the Dutch national air carrier) is the next biggest carrier and operates flights from both Heathrow and City Airport. The latter though, is usually an expensive option and only used by business travellers.

The most popular is the Dutch Flyer (formerly known as the Amsterdam Express) service. Using an all-inclusive ticket, travellers can depart via train from London Liverpool Street station to Harwich on the east coast of England. From there they can take a ferry to Hook in Holland -- Amsterdam Central Station is only a short train ride away from here.

Whilst taking a ferry to Amsterdam takes considerably longer than flying, it is much cheaper and there are less stringent time requirements for check-in. Added to this, the ferry is more of an "experience", boasting two cinemas, restaurants, bars and gaming.

Further Afield in the UK, Easyjet operates from regional hubs but there are also even smaller airlines such as Jet2 that flies from Newcastle, Manchester and Leeds Bradford airports.

KLM run a frequent service from this airport using their Fokker 50 propeller aircraft. A little known airline known as VLM also fly from here. Both airlines run several flights every day which are especially popular with executives. The aero planes are so small, however, that the same standard applies and there are no separate economy and business classes.

In the next few months, British Airways will also be flying from City to Schipol so hopefully this will put downward pressure on prices but only time will tell.

Amsterdam airport is the 4th biggest European hub with hundreds of airlines flying in.

KLM

KLM isn't considered to be a discount airline, but since they are based in Amsterdam, they can provide good rates for flights there. The have routes to and from Amsterdam from many countries, across all 5 continents.

British European (BE)

If you are taking a flight from the UK or Ireland, BE likely has very cheap tickets to Amsterdam.

BMIbaby

BMIbaby is the discount arm of BMI, and they have cheap tickets to Amsterdam from some UK airports but not as many as you'll find with British European.

Ryan Air

Ryan Air flies into Eindhoven from a number of cities in Europe, such as London, Dublin, Stockholm, and Marseille. They also service destinations in Spain and Italy. There is regular train service between Eindhoven and Amsterdam, with the trip taking only 90 minutes.

Mustad Fly

With all the fly patterns available, what did you come with on your own that catches fish?

Mine is "Mr. Moose"
Size 12/14 standard Mustad wet fly hook + gold bead head
Body: black or brown mohair yarn
Tail: black or brown goose biots
Collar: peacock herl
Legs: 3 strands moose hair on each side
Thread: brown or black

Sadly it hasn't got a name yet and I'm still improving its design along with others(the great thing about fly tying) but its simply a lure best fished on an intermediate line with a slow figure of 8 retrieve, Ive found it fishes best on 8lb Rio fluorocarbon, firstly a size 8 mustad long shank hook, then a quick base whipping with black thread, all strengths works, then its simply a white marabou and yellow marabou mix to form a short tail, then its dubbed with Krystal flash either lime green or coral, finish by adding lead dumbbell eyes(orange color) and whip finishing, also tried it with a hackle but it didn't work so well, i like to add a few strands of silver holographic tinsel in the tail, good choice of mustad hooks, i never use anything other when it comes to fly tying, i might try a gold bead head instead of the dumbbells sometime. Finnish the head with a coat of epoxy, its accounted for 6 good sized trout lately so it must be doing something right.
