Fly Fishing Forums

Fly fishing is a traditional activity that has gained international repertoire as a sport or hobby. Many people nowadays have taken to this due to the close to nature appeal and the challenges it offers. Fly fishing is also preferred as it is seen as a safer sport in comparison to hunting. Fly fishing is performed in lakes and rivers where one can simply sit by the river banks or head out a few hundred yards into the lake. Those who can afford it can venture out deep into the sea on a luxury yacht for a fly fishing session.

Once you've decided to hit the waters for some fly fishing sessions, there are some pre fishing procedures to be done. Primarily, there is the shelling out of money towards fly fishing tackle. Buying fly fishing tackle or fly fishing flies does not mean that one has to rob a bank. Most basic equipment can be bought at reasonable prices and one does not necessarily have to go for the higher priced brands, especially if one is just a beginner. To start off, a good well priced reliable rod is not hard to come by. While the higher end rods obviously are quite expensive, a decently priced set of rood and reel will surely catch fish as well. Look out for a rod that is usable in most conditions and sturdy enough as well.

The fly fishing reel and spool are the next most important of fly fishing tackle. A reel is used to bring in or dispense the line while the spool holds the line. Most regular fishermen will find the need to use multiple types of lines and hence it is best that one buys extra spools. Having at least two spools would be a good idea, if not for now, maybe later. The fly fishing line consists of two parts; the backing and the line itself. The backing is the first part which is used to game the fish. The fly lines vary and will depend on the kind of rod that one uses. A beginner would find that a light weight line would be easiest to use until they get sufficient practice. One can get the line fitted onto the reel during purchase. It requires a specific machine for this purpose, or a steady hand. There are many brands of line some for the most popular are Fenwick and streamside and Cortland. Most times the fisherman knows what he needs before long to have a successful day at the river. With the right gear the trip will be well worth the research it took to sort out all the equipment you needed. There are many online stores where you can shop for the right gear for the right job. Some stores are more popular then others but most all them have reviews for there products which can give you a general idea of hat the product is like before you purchase. One might want to take a little bit of time checking out which is the best and most suitable items to buy and also to save yourself a few dollars in the process. Rest assured if you do your homework then you ill surely be more confident in not only the new gear your wearing and using but also in you ability to land that nice large one. Then you can show it off to your buddy's as the one that never got away.

Now since we went off topic a little we will talk about additional line segments that also have to be purchased which include the leaders and the tippets. The leader attaches to the fly line using a very strong knot known as the surgeons' knot. The last line is the finest among all the line assemblies and is known as the tippet. It is transparent being made of a monofilament. The tippet will hold up the lure when the cast is thrown and hence the need for transparency. The tippet also has to be replaced every time a cast is thrown and hence it is best to buy a lot. For fly fishing flies, one can procure large packs of fly fishing flies at a regular fishing store whereas some prefer to produce their own fly fishing flies to specific patterns. Many people have there own preference of the fight pattern to use and which ones to use at different light conditions. There are many helpful site online to guides you through the process. Most people and experienced anglers ill tell you to use A light pattern on a dark day and a dark pattern on a bright day, it depends on the species you are after and depends on the river but you ill get lots of tips from experienced anglers on the shore line, good Luck.

Fishing can be an adventure very enjoyable and relaxing. Until you have the right tools, the fishing safety knowledge, and a little support from friends or family, you could perform your fishing successfully.

However, the most overlooked factor in buying equipment is choosing the right tackle fishing. You must follow these simple guidelines in the selection of tackles.

1.You should choose the appropriate fishing flies that you use to catch the type of fish you will be targeting to seize. The basic rule in choosing the type of theft is to know which is abundant in the real environment.

2.Once you have determined which fly to use, you should be able to choose the appropriate line to use. The three commonly used tackles are fly fishing, making casting and spinning. The difference between the three is that spinning and plug-casting makes use of bait the weight to drag the line from its spool to the destination of your fishing.

3.Fly lines are divided into four different types -- the weight forward, double taper, shooting-taper and level taper. Within the four different types are many variations. However, once you've decided what kind of fishing wish to accomplish and what types of fish you want to catch, you'll be using only a fishing line in particular.

The fishing lines have numbers that rank from one to fifteen. However, the most common among anglers are the lines numbered from three to twelve in weight. As a basic rule for optimum catching, the first thirty feet of your line should be balanced and correspond to the stem.

4.The next thing you should purchase is the rod and reel. The most suitable equipment for beginners is the spin-casting gears that is easy to use and provides setbacks less. For all types of fishing, the recommended spin casting reel is mounted on a heat of six feet and the sprue with a queue eight-pound test line. The reel and rod can be purchased as a package in stores fishermen. Most professional anglers prefer launcher bait and spinning tackle.

5.You would need sinkers, hooks and Bobbers. Sinkers and hooks could be bought in packs with different styles and sizes. When Bobbers selection, always keep in mind that over the cap, the better the performance. The difficulty depends on fish the size of your bobber.

6.Professional anglers prefer artificial lures. The recommended sizes of lures are 1 / 8 ounce to an ounce.

Remember that the kind of deal would depend on the fish you prefer to catch. Avoid buying fishing tackle unnecessary and enjoy your fishing experience at affordable prices.

Billy Connolly - Fly Fishing

Fly Fishing Tippet

Fly fishing is a skill that is achieve thru use of right equipment, right angle precision, and right fly tying. The techniques in fly fishing and fly tying should come hand in hand to achieve fly fishing success. Tying the knot is as important as choosing the right equipment in fly fishing. Techniques of fly fishing and fly tying are learned easily when following the right steps and guidelines. Before the learning the right techniques in fly fishing, one must learn the right tying of the knot in order to be attached to the fly-fishing tackle.

Below are different types of knot to make to be attached to the fly fishing tackle.

Surgeons knot

This is the simplest knot to tie and is very strong in structure. This is usually used when the tippet is almost used up and another piece needs to be tied. The first thing to do is to overlap two lines with tag ends on opposite direction. This should be approximately 6 inches in length. Then, a loop is made where the right side is passed over and around the left side twice. The last step is to pull on all 4 ends of the knot and moisten it to make it hold together. The tag ends will then be clipped close to the knot.

Nail Knot

This is commonly used to attach backing line. A needle may be used for this type of knot. The first step is to assemble the fly line and the needle along the fly line. Then the backing line is laid along with the needle and then a turn is made to secure and hold all pieces together. The tag end is pushed to the channel created by the needle and the tag end is pushed forward while the needle is slowly withdrawn. This will tighten the knot.

Arbor Knot

This type of knot is useful in tying and securing on line end to spool arbor of the reel. The first step is to have the line around the reel's spool arbor. Then an overhead knot is tied to tag end. This is the first overhead knot and a second overhand knot should be made close to the first one. The standing part of the line is pulled to allow 2 overhand knots to jam on the spool. Tag end can be trimmed to make it neat.

The knot is a very important part of fishing tools because it stands between the fish biting the lure and your rod. If your knot is not tied properly and you don't use the appropriate one, it might just cost you the fish of your life. Seriously, you should be very mindful of all your fishing tools. They are not very many but each one is essential because each one has its own function. And these tools differ in qualities. If you are more of action fishing with bass flying fishing, you must get the strongest and most durable fishing tools on hand because it's going to be a struggle and battle. If you have a weak rod, not properly tied knot, and inappropriate lure, bass flying fishing will be just a dream.

The general idea of the difference is that different fish can be caught by the different instruments used. The more fish what is fly fishing and attributes involved.

The basic apparatus in fly fishing is the fly rod, fly line and fly line artificial and the fly reel. Each part of the front is of vital importance in its own way in catching fish. The cane is used to launch the flight line. Depending on the type of fish caught and the environment being fished lengths range from 7 to 10 feet. Normally, the rod is fiberglass and graphite, and in some cases bamboo. By using different materials, the rods are lighter, heavier, rigid or curved. Again rods are made of purpose that the expected demand.

The online part of fly fishing with fly front is a plastic coated line that can be found in many different styles of floating and sinking in a variety of thicknesses. They vary from color to color, in many cases are bright to attract the prey destined to be captured.

Fly Fishing Nymphs

Czech Nymphing - The Essential Fly Fishing Technique

Czech Nymphing was introduced in the United Kingdom in the 1990 World Championships. The Republic Czech team beat the United Kingdom's international teams in the Welsh River Dee. The Czechs caught grayling in the number of sites thought to be impossible fast or deep before. This sent shockwaves through the world of competitive fishing. The technique is now considered almost a standard - an essential part of all fishermen grayling arsenal.

First, we Check out the flies, the Czech nymph has many, many variations, but all are based on a simple design, using Lead a great hook. They are designed to be fished deep, fast water, weight and slim profile are important.

Tackle

A 5 or 6-weight rod will suffice, 9 'and 10' is ideal for better control of flies. Leader should be about 9 'long, not tapered as are counterproductive tapered leader not sink fast enough. Just use something like 6 pounds to the top dropper, with 4 pounds from down there. Use two 5-6 "droppers, one about 18" above the point fly, and the other about 18 "above that. The Czech method is to catch some most nymph on the dropper top so that helps lead to another straight to the correct level. To help ensure a quick collapse of the flies, degrease the leader. He looks in the final shot of the flyline, so depending on the view you might want to use some sort of indicator of the bite.

Tactics

  • The water will be fast, streamy water is usually considered unfishable on the fly, probably 18 "-- 3 "deep. You want to get your line as close as possible to the fund. Do not fish with more than 3-4" of flyline outside the tip ring. This is difficult to do, like fly fishing natural tendency is to shoot a little line.
  • This is very short wide fishing, fish will close to your rod! No conventional distribution, not the line is not enough and that the nymphs are too heavy - the nymphs that provide the casting weight. Use action blink to launch nymphs upstream at an angle of 30 degrees. Done properly, 'sharing film' leader will be extended to the nymphs are straight upward. Immediately begin to sink rapidly as the current brings the line down towards you.
  • To stay in touch with the flies, not to recover any line around the track with the rod, the increase and reduction of the tip, as appropriate. See your flag very closely! Any hesitation, draw, stutter, check - strike immediately.
  • Due to the rapid nature of the water and grayling trout, will have very little in that fished in 5-10 seconds and is directly in the next, a lightweight bar helps your arms tired. Often it is often useful to the flies come down and let them fish for a few moments to enter around the corner and the 'hanging'.
  • Keep the rod tip above the indicator and consistently Lean downstream, dropping the tip while doing so. This can be a very effective tactic, taking one or two fish out of water that has already worked.

Obviously, with this technique is not necessary to limit the nymphs Czech. The key is to use heavily weighted flies, so goldheads, Caddis do equally well. Matching the hatch "is not a priority in the This fishing! This is an active search method, and as such, the technique is more important than the specific pattern.

Fly Fishing Lessons - Part 20

    Wulff Fly

I like the royal Wulff fly, but is it different in any way from the royal coachman?

I love to fish with the royal wulff, but a friend recommended a royal coachman, he said they work tons better, but is there a difference?

Okay, let me see if I can get this right. The Coachman is a very old fly that probably originated in Europe in the 1700s or earlier, but don't quote me on that. In any case, it's considered a "traditional fly," as in we don't know who invented it. I don't know if anyone even uses it anymore. The Coachman was basically peacock herl and brown wet fly hackle. Nothing fancy at all. An American fly tier named John Haily is the inventor of the Royal Coachman, which is a pattern that takes the old Coachman and fortifies it with red thread bands and the barred tail feathers. So, from the Coachman, an old traditional fly, we get the Royal Coachman. The original Coachman and Royal Coachman were wet flies and, like most flies of that time, they were nonrepresentational. That is, they were attractor patterns that did not imitate any one form of trout forage -- might look like a nymph, maybe a minnow, maybe a terrestrial.

Now you need to know about Lee Wulff. He is an American fly fishing innovator from the early-mid-1900s. He did a LOT to advance the art and sport of fly fishing, too much to say here, but two things he did were to make fly fishing tackle lighter and more compact, and he helped to advance the art of dry flies. He is the inventor of the original Wulff flies, obviously. The first Wulff flies were basically very high-floating dry flies, named after the main color of the materials -- White Wulff, Gray Wulff, etc. Wulff invented the Royal Wulff by basing a new dry fly on the old Royal Coachman, with the body of peacock herl, bands of red thread, and barred tail feathers. So, you could say that the Royal Wulff is an evolution of the Royal Coachman, which was based on the Coachman (which was probably based on something even earlier).

Most of the Royal Coachman flies I see in shops are dry flies, and most of the Royal Coachman recipes I see are for dry flies, or perhaps you might call them dry-wets. The Royal Wulff is and always was a dry. Do they fish differently? Yeah. Most Wulff flies are designed to ride very high on the water and are great for skittering and waking attacks. Is one of these flies "tons better" than the other? Probably not. They are both attractors and if a fish hits one of them, that same fish probably would have hit the other.

Czerwinski: Big chill, thick ice, let's fish
So is it cold enough for you yet? If you’re a fan of ice fishing, the answer probably is a resounding no. But take heart, because this latest blast of winter chill we’ve been going through may just be (pardon the pun) the tip of the iceberg.

    Czech Nymph Fly Selection

There is one essential thing that the fly fisherman will need when Czech nymphing, that is heavy flies! Usually using a team of 3 flies on droppers with the point fly being the heaviest fly. A Caddis fly can be 5.5gm in weight, this is not a problem as the flies are not cast as traditional flies but lowered into the water.

Cased Caddis - The Prey Of Trout and Grayling

Caddis Flies are widespread across Europe wherever water is available, either static or running. However, the adult is a strong flyer and can move some distance from ponds, streams and rivers, especially as it is attracted to light. However it is the larvae form that is a key part of the diet for fish such as trout. The larvae which make a "case" in which to live using small stones, sand, pieces of leaves and all glued together with a silk lining inside. The silk is spun with a secretion from labial glands (around the mouth) like moth larvae. When full-grown the larva pupates in the case which stops being mobile and may be glued down to a rock.

The cased forms feed on vegetation whilst the caseless forms tend to be either carnivorous or detritivores. The predatory ones are those free living. The web-spinning, caseless larvae may create a silk tube in which to live whilst those in moving water spin the web between stones. This web may trap small invertebrates drifting with the current. This invertebrate drift, as it is known, is an abundant source of food as the current constantly dislodges animals living on the bottom of streams and rivers. Many of these caseless caddis larvae are associated with particular speeds of flow. However, much of what they catch will just be drifting detritus and other organic particulate matter on which the larva will feed (hence detritivore). Some particulate matter will be drifting plankton. Those larvae in especially fast flowing water, e.g. Hydropsyche, will have toughened upper parts to the thoracic segments (thickened external skeleton is referred to as being sclerotised). The larvae have their abdomens safely in the silk tube but the front section of the body protruding into the current. This sclerotisation may be an adaptation to protect them from small stones and other material hitting them.

It is this caddis that is one of our primary fishing imitations when Czech nymphing. Below are different imitations that can be used in descending weight order, with the heavyweights of the Czech nymphing world described first.

Czech Bottle Fly - Super Heavyweight Fly Fishing Flies

Czech bottle nymphs are the "bruisers" of the fly fishing world. Designed to hold bottom in the fastest of waters a Czech bottle nymph is a uniquely designed fishing fly. The Bottle Fly is a complete fly, designed in the shape of a bottle and is available in 2.2gm, 3.4gm, 4.4gm and even 5.5gm weights. The fly is manufactured from pre-made moulds which are tied very simply, the bottle is rolled in glue and sand is rolled onto the fly, a hackle is then simply tied to the front. The finished fly is identical to a caddis in its nest described above. The beauty of this fly being that it will hold bottom or take a team of flies to the bottom of the fastest of rivers. We use this for sea trout frequently as it can be used to hold a snake fly low in the fastest of waters!

Traditional Czech Nymphs - Heavy Fly Fishing Flies

These are the more "traditional" Czech nymphs used around the world. These are still a heavy fly, often tungsten weighted to keep the fly low in the water. Czech nymphs are available in a range of colours, from pea green to cream and red, from hares ear and amber to sparkle and orange. They key with these colours is actually that the Czech nymphing technique is forcing the trout to make a rapid decision, fast water with stimulating colours is often deadly.

A technique I frequently use is to use a heavy fly, often a bottle fly on the point with a natural colours Czech nymph on one dropper and a nymphs with colours on the second dropper. Using this technique you can see what the trout are eating before focusing on specific colours.

Goldhead / Beadhead Fly Fishing Flies

These are the "lightweight flies" used in Czech nymphing. The Goldhead or Beadhead fly has a small bead which gives it weight, ideal in slower rivers when Czech nymphing and frequently used as an alternative dropper.

    Standard Nymphs

Do not forget to truly work a team of droppers, there is nothing to stop the fly fisherman using a standard caddis, nymph, stonefly or other fly on a dropper when Czech nymphing, the key is that it needs to be kept low and close to the river bottom.

What are the pins that Jim Nantz and Phil Simms are wearing for the Steelers/Chargers Playoff game?

On each of their jackets towards the left they are wearing little pins. They appear to be football helmets, but unsure. Does anyone have more details on what these pins mean/are?

Probably the ones Fox had last week for Alzheimers. They wear them and then are auctioning them off for awareness and trying to find a cure.

I'm watching the Titans - Chargers AFC Wild Card game, and Phil Simms's PHILosophy section comes on, and there's this background music. Can ANYONE tell me what this song is? I've heard it in warm ups and introductions for the Cincinnati Reds, Columbus Blue Jackets and Phoenix Coyotes, among others. Any help would be appreciated.

Try looking for it on YouTube.com

Once you find that Phil thing, see if they mention it anywhere, or it happens to be at the end of the peice. Also I would try google.com

    Good luck!!

Should I choose fly fishing vest or a chest pack to carry my fly fishing gear? This seems to be a common question that gets asked in many fly fishing forums and there are many opinions about this topic.

Both fly fishing vests and fly fishing chest packs have their pros and cons. It appears that everyone has their own specific reasons for choosing one style over the other and also a particular manufacturer.

There are several manufacturers like Simms, Colombia, Fishpond, Stearns and many others that offer good quality fishing vests and chest packs. Below is a list of things to take into consideration when making a decision between a vest and chest pack.

Fly Fishing Vests - Traditional or Mesh Vest?

Traditional vests are fine but can be too warm and uncomfortable to wear in hot weather. When fishing in warmer weather a mesh vest is a better choice because by design its breathable, will keep you cooler and more comfortable.

In the region were I fish, which has four seasons, I prefer a mesh over the traditional fly fishing vests because of its versatility. If you order a mesh vest one size up from the size you would normally wear you will be able to wear an extra layer of clothing underneath, like a wading jacket or rain gear. This will keep you more comfortable when fishing in colder or rainy weather conditions.

Other Basic Features to Consider When Looking For Fly Fishing Vest:

No matter what style fishing vest you decide on, an important feature to consider is does the vest have enough pockets to carry your flies, leaders, tippets, extra reels/spools, tools and other fly fishing tackle. Typically a vest should have at least 15-20 pockets and a variety of small, medium and large size pockets. Any more than that can add confusion in trying to figure out which pocket contains what you are looking for. Also the pockets should be designed so that they can easily be opened and closed with one hand.

Good quality fly fishing vests will also have things like D rings and rod loops are also great features to have. D rings are convenient for attaching a landing net, tools and other accessories, while rod loops will hold your fly rod and keep your hands free for tying line, releasing fish or rowing.

    Fly Fishing Chest Packs

There are several different styles of chest packs available on the market today. Some chest packs have a single pouch in the front and there are others that have double pouches in the front.

Another style pack that is popular is the chest/back pack system. Some of these allow you to detach the vest part from the pack so you can use them separately if you choose to. This chest pack is great if you are planning a long day of fly fishing or even a weekend fishing trip. They have plenty of storage for all of your fly fishing gear, extra layers of clothing, water, food, and even a small stove.

Some things I have heard fly fishers complain about is that some fly fishing chest packs stick out too far in front of you and they prevent you from being able to see your feet or rocks when wading. Others like them because they claim that they are easy and more comfortable on their shoulders.

Summary: Consider this just a basic guide of things to consider that will best fit your needs when looking for a new fly fishing vest or fly fishing chest pack.
