Are there any lures available for rods (not fly-fishing rods) that float on the top of the water?

If so, please give me information on what fish are best to catch this way, where, and methods. (shallows, deep waters etc.) Give me information to the brim. I am a beginner trying to learn all I can and would very much appreciate the help.

i am constantly wanting more and more fly fishing and/or fly tying materials...even if i dont have the money i still look and want...do i have a problem or am i just addicted to it?
no i dont spend necesary money...im still a kid...still at home....

..the novelty has worn away from this new hobby, and it's more like fishing itself (you still look forward to and enjoy it, but you're not so ga-ga about it).

I was very curious about this sport for some time now. I seen it done countless times.

Tried it. Failed.

People are constantly and relentlessly, with their greater patience and understanding tried to rub some skills fly fishing on me - but in vain.

Let's all learn the basics. DEFINITION OF TERMS!
A brief definition of certain terms that I need to know on the fly.

What is Fly Fishing?
Fly fishing is an ancient method and distinct angling, developed primarily for salmonids (trout and salmon, mostly) and now extended to other species such as pike, bass, and carp, as well as a wide range of saltwater species.

I saw this Fly Fishing rod on ebay,is it a good rod?, im fishing steelhead and salmon?

Im fishing salmon and steelhead, in the credit river, missisauga. BTW does anyone know any good spots to fish there?

From the description, it doesn't mention anything about backing. I fish Steelhead as often as 3-4 times a week and even a average Steelhead can run you into your backing. If you decide to purchase this, and it turns out not to come with backing...get some and re-rig your outfit. Also the rod is a little too short for a river like the Credit. I would suggest something a bit longer. Longer length aids in line control and mending. I have two pre-rigged outfits on my website if you decide not to purchase that particular one. Fly fishing is a very old form of fishing and requires delicacy and precision of catching fish, fly fishing, but not limited at all to catch fish small. You can catch fish almost any type of fishing, but most fishermen use flies for salmon and trout fishing.

The best thing you can say historians, was the first record in the second century AD in Mesopotamia. The flies are tied using chicken feathers and were cast for a period of six feet in line with the pole that was almost as long. Modern day fly fishing configurations are indeed similar, although they have definitely made progress.

Fishing rods are generally more of a normal fishing rod and very light. The line is heavier than you might expect, and aid in the casting weight. For the most part, the reel owns the line and not online no tail when you cast out, as with many other bar and reel combinations.

When fly fishing, fisherman cane press a portion of the line and essentially whips back and forth, trying to fly in front of a fish to entice the strike.

One of the most popular uses of fishing gear trout fishing. Although you do not need a configuration of fly fishing for trout fishing, many fishermen out at last go this way. Fly fishing trout flies work well, because they resemble small source of real trout food.

Guidelines recommend trout fishing to look at what kind of insects are active in which fishing and the use of flies that resemble them. The local insect population will help determine not only the type and color of the fly to use, but also whether to use a fly that float or sink.

The sport fishing of trout fishing and the fly, in general, has a reputation be hard on the wallet, but many stores offer the sports gear for beginners at a reasonable price. While arts beginner time as the level necessary to exchange skill increases fisherman, the choice of low cost equipment to get started: the fisherman can save the updates.

Fly Fishing . . . What Type Of Rod/Tackle Should I Be Looking For As A Beginner?

I fish quite often, but I have never gone fly fishing before. When I went for a scenic drive one weekend I noticed TONS of people fly fishing along the side of the river. Looked as though they were salmon fishing. It looked like a lot of fun. So I wanted to give it a go. Since I have never gone fly fishing before I was wondering what type of rod I should be looking for and what type of tackle would be involved.

Secondly . .are there any fly fishing rods for kids? My son LOVES to fish.
I live in British Columbia . . so I'm assuming the fish I'd be after would be Salmon

Go to the local shop that specializes in fly fishing equipment in your area. The salmon/ steelhead gear is heavier duty than a trout rod. All are fun and fairly easy to learn for the basics, but may take years to become a master at the sport. For a child's size rod, I suggest a fly rod for trout about 7 foot in a 6-7 weight. For you a length of 7-8 feet and a 7-9 weight. The shop personnel can explain all of these terms. Buy a couple of fly fishing magazines and do some reading. The sport is great.

First, though fly rods have different shapes and sizes, some are longer, heavier or more colors than others, different parts of a rod does not change at all. The important part of the bar referred to the white bar. It is the central axis of the bar and is where everything, where it joins the rest of the bar. Rod White also called the tip and then the heavy part is called the butt. In general, whites are made of graphite, but there are other materials that can be used.

The following is the reel seat. This is at the end of the rod. The purpose of this is for the fly reel, the rings are in this part are intended the coil block and the foot in place. The material used for reel seats can be of graphite or metal. Then we have the handle bar. This is located just above the reel seat. This part of the rod also varies in different sizes and shapes. You can find various materials for it. For more expensive bars, the material commonly used in this part is made of rubber. However, for normal cases, (the bars that are less expensive) from Cork is the most common material.

And On Finally, the rod guides. These are attached to the rod blank. The goal is to "guide" to the flight line through them. As always, this part of the fishing rod also varies forms. You'll also notice that the first guide is identical to that found in conventional fishing rods. The referenced, and is stripping guides. For the rest of the rod, the wire used is thin and is usually addressed as snake guides. The last Guide found at the tip of the stick is called the tip top.

Fly fishing reels?

This may seem like a dumb question for all you fly fishing guys out there, but after years of fishing with spinning, bait casters and even spincast when I was a wee lad, I finally got myself a cheap fly outfit...The question I have is, that this reel is a click drag set up, but do I have to mount it right hand retreive or can I mount it left hand? It turns and clicks both ways...help me out guys.

OK this is simple, but since your just starting out its not so easy. Many fly reels have a ratchet type clicker and its often on reels intended for left hand wind, the ones with ratchet clickers on both line in and out are mostly for right handed users but they can be converted to left, unless your retrieving the fish with the reel the retrieving side makes very little difference, if it bothers you move to a reel such as he airflo c8 as this will only "click" when line is being taken out, often reels that sound both ways are made by leeda, and are cassette reels, the LC 100 is one of them. One last thing is if your worried that you cant change the retrieve side you can simply turn the reel you have at the minute round so that the line guard faces forwards, many of them have a double line guard now for tool-less changing.

Clueless about fly fishing?
Me too!
I have been really curious about this sport for some time now. I've seen it done countless of times.

Tried it. Failed.

People have endlessly and tirelessly, with their utmost patience and understanding tried to rub off some fly fishing skills on me - but to no avail.

I have resorted to reading, for now. I decided that whatever I can't do, I might as well LEARN - even just in theory. It helps. I think of my self right now as "A work in progress".

Let's all learn the basics. DEFINITION OF TERMS!
A brief definition about some terms I need to know about fly fishing.

What is Fly Fishing?
Fly fishing is an ancient and distinct angling method, developed primarily for salmonids (trout and salmon, mostly) and now extended to other species such as pike, bass, and carp, as well as a wide range of salt water species.

Fly casting is gripping or holding a fly rod correctly and to adopt the correct stance to maintain comfort and balance. The most basic rule to casting is based on the way a clock looks. Your head points straight up to 12:00, your cast (the tip of your rod) should go back to 10:00 and then forward to 2:00, releasing your line at the end of the forward motion. It is a common mistake to dip the rod below those two positions and almost always ends in a line tangle!

Angler. (Does that have anything to do with Math? I hate Math!)
That would be YOU silly! Someday, IF you learn how to fly fish, you will be called an angler. A person catching fish or shellfish with no intent to sell, this includes people keeping the catch or people that practice the "Catch and Release" method (highly recommended).

The Essentials - If you don't have a complete list of these, you're NOT Fly Fishing!

Fly Fishing rods are long, thin, flexible rods sometimes made of bamboo, but more recently from man-made materials. Fly rods tend to have large diameter eyes (or guides) spaced along the rod to help control the movement of relatively thick fly line. To aid in the freedom of movement required to skillfully cast with a fly rod, there is usually little to no butt (handle) extending below the fishing reel. Although fly rods are mainly used for casting from fixed positions, they can also be used for trolling for fish.

Fishing Reel is a device used for the deployment and retrieval of fishing line using a spool mounted on an axle. They are used in conjunction with the fly rod and are attached to the base or handle of the rod.

Fishing line is any cord made for fishing. Important parameters of a fishing line are its length, material, and weight (thicker, sturdier lines are more visible to fish). The refractive index is also important—lines with a refractive index similar to water are almost invisible to fish. The most important parameter in deciding what line to use is its strength. This is the amount of weight the line can hold before snapping. One must balance the trade-off between strength and visibility.

Flies as Bait? Are you kidding?
Flies or Artificial flies are constructed — "tied" onto a hook with thread, fur, feathers and other materials — in sizes and colors to match naturally occurring food or simply to excite a fish. And to add more confusion, the names of flies: Wet and dry flies, nymphs, scuds, eggs, streamers, steelheads, bass flies, salmon flies,and saltwater flies.

You will be considered a well equipped fly fisher if you bring waders, wading boots, vest net, polarized sunglasses to protect your eyes and see through the reflection on the water, a hat for the harsh sun, sun block and bug dope (bug repellant) - if you don't want to be eaten alive by bugs before you even catch a fish!

Armed with the stuff I read, I went about to experience Fly Fishing without even going near a body of water.

Can a fly fishing rod and reel be used for..?

Can a fly fishing rod be used for top-water jigs for freshwater? For small-mouth bass and other small-medium sized freshwater fish. Also for worms? Thanks a lot! And if you don't get what I am trying to ask (rephrase it) I will add more details.

@ stop_makin_cents, (lol) sorry for it kind of being confusing. I didn't mean putting the worm on the with the fly. What I meant was just getting a regular hook with a worm on it. And I have a fly and spinning combos. I was just wondering if I could do what I just said with a fly cast combo (but not use much weight, if not none). Because I love fly fishing. Yes, it can. What you need to figure out is how much the lure weighs. if you have a 5 wt rod, chances are you won't be able to punch it out where it needs to go. I'd choose an 8 or 9 wt rod with a 71/2' leader tapered to 1x so you'll have enough "oomph" to toss the rig and enough backbone in the
rod to set the hook. If you break a 1x leader setting the hook, please let me know, that will be one helluva big fish.

Also for worms?

Yes and no.....
If you try flycasting a traditional setup with a worm on a hook,
it's going to fly off the hook every time (just simple physics)
but..... if you're fishing a small stream and just using the flyrod to place the worm into likely holding areas by a simple "flick"
that will work fine (I know some folks who do this and it is a deadly technique).

The art of casting is a very important skill in fly fishing. It requires gradual movements, synchronized. It helps to think of each movement, both in the back sharing in the division forward, is divided into three steps. The first is the charge, the second is the momentum of projection, and the third is the pause. It takes much practice to master the art of casting in fly fishing.

There are several types of molds. The most common of these include the basic model, false cast, side and reverse casts, roll casting, and the dual route cast.

In fly fishing the easiest cast, called the basic model is simply launch line back and then straight ahead. Someone new to fly fishing should master the basic model before turning to other techniques. Use a short length of the line to start if you're new to fly fishing. This will help you get enough control of the line, while practicing short gentle movements.

The false cast is a variation of the basic model. This is the same backward and forward movements as the basic model, and is immediately followed by another set the same movement. The line actually travels backward and forward repeatedly without touching the water. Practicing this type of cast helps to build the synchronization exact required in fly fishing.

In fly fishing and reverse side of the models are generally used when the wind is a problem. They are also used if obstacles might make a regular cast difficult.

A roll cast is generally used if the fisherman has his back to these obstacles
as a river or a high wall of vegetation. When these conditions exist, a mold base is almost impossible. You have to let out a good length of line before you, is better to let the current takes a short distance. The drag of water in the line load the rod, and you can cast forward without needing to execute the back cast.

Using a double cast away in fly fishing you will launch a line much longer than is possible with a basic allocation. To do this you need a line speed much faster. This is accomplished by movements of much higher quality, applying more force, and the load of the rod later before the plaster. During this cast both hands of the fisherman must work independently.

The more than five types of fly fishing are models used more often. There are many other models too, including the S-cast, the parachute cast, and recovering cast.

Casting is the ability basic physics involved in fly fishing. Its aim is to put the fly exactly where you want to be like any other skill practice is required. The accuracy and delicacy of presentation are very important when fly fishing. Master the basics of fly fishing in the first place it is easier to move to the more difficult models. The most natural way of going about fly fishing is by using the popular bamboo fly fishing rods which are distinctive because they are made out of 100% natural bamboo with the necessary metallic reinforcements.
