Tiemco Fly
Fly fishing dry and wet fly hooks?

I recently bought size 12 and size 16 tiemco dry fly hooks. Can I also use these hooks for nymphs (hares ear, copper john, prince nymphs etc) or do they not sink well enough?
well they sink as well as nymph hooks though.

Yes you can use them for tying nymphs, the major problem you will be facing here is hook strength as a lighter wire is used for dry flies. As for sinking you can counter that with a beadhead or if you don't want to use a bead Gehrkes makes a product called "Xink" that is used for wet flies.(Gehrkes makes "Gink" for dry flies)

Yes, they will sink as soon as the fly gets soaked. Still I reccommend either using a bead or using a regular nymph hook.

My favorite fly fishing technique in the late summer/ early fall is performed with a dry line and long leader in rather shallow water using a tiny "hyalella shrimp".

The onset of cooler weather triggers the fish to start their pre-winter gorge. Hyalella shrimp are plentiful in marl bottoms and along the shallow weed beds. In many of the Kamloops lakes you will find fish cruising in as shallow as 2 feet of water, adding "sight fishing" to dramatically intensify the experience. A good pair of polaroid glasses come in real handy too!

I don't know why the long leader makes a difference but it does. We tie our own 20' to 24' fluorocarbon tapered leaders. The fish cruise through, sometimes in schools, sometimes by themselves, picking their way along the bottom, sucking up the tiny shrimp by the hundreds.

The retrieve is probably the most important. Without using a strike indicator, just cast alongside the weed bed (or to the fish if you see them), letting the shrimp settle to the bottom. Gently tighten the line so that it straightens. With the patience of hanging a chironimid, slowly retrieve the shrimp. Let it settle occasionally and continue to retrieve. Vary the speeds from extremely slow to short, light, 2 inch bursts. If you are casting over the weeds you will have to adjust your speed accordingly to prevent a hang-up.The flies are so small that they move along quite well over the weeds as long as you keep the fly moving.

Hyalella shrimp are a food staple for rainbow trout, particularly in the fall as they flourish in the marl or in weed beds. A few times my fishing buddy K.J. and I have actually seen fish that have committed involuntary suicide pursuing a vein of shrimp in the marl. What appears to happen to them is they chase the shrimp as they retreat into the marl eventually getting their heads stuck in the marl. If the marl goes past a portion of the gill plate, the fish get stuck, like on a barbed hook, and can't back out. They then smother to death. It's a rare event to see.

Here are a list of lakes that I like to sight fish with hyalella shrimp in shallow marl in the Kamloops Area. These lakes all have white bottomed marl (except Bleeker)

Peter Hope - Huge marl flats all around the lake

Roche Lake - the south end and south east islands

Black Lake- near Roche Lake - fabulous structure around the lake

Hosli Lake - near Roche - need a 4x4 here if the road is wet or muddy. The mid-lake shoal by the rocks is also known for it's fabulous sedge hatches in June and July.

Bleeker Lake - near Roche Lake

Community Lake - extensive flats along shoreline and around the islands

...and many more.

Occasionally, when you are fishing large marl flats like at: Peter Hope lake, Roche Lake and even Community Lake, there is a possibility that you may see what I am talking about. My friend KJ and I have found a few 4-5lb fish dead, tail up and head buried, over the last couple of years. It's eerie to look at.

Be prepared for a crazy fight, especially when the fish are over 20 inches and in the shallow water. The lack of depth takes the vertical dimension away from the fish so the run horizontally, frequently in multiple circles around the boat. My personal record count is 6 complete circle tows before I landed the fish.

Hyalella shrimp have a full range of natural colours with varying degrees of natural shades. Try light beige to brown, light mint green to olive dark green or even gray or orange patterned shrimp. The late Jack Shaw(legendary fly tyer and fly fisherman) tied an "opalescent shrimp" and used it with great success. His pattern is vividly illustrated in the new book by his old friend Ralph Shaw, titled "The Pleasure of His Company". (see below)

Tiemco scud hooks-2487 and Mustad-3906B #12, #14 and #16 seem to work best for me. Body material is usually natural or synthetic dubbing or ostrich feather strands. Occasionally I will put a tiny glass bead head on the size #12's but I rarely pull a back on them... I usually just trim the material short on the top side of the hook and apply some gloss. A fine rib (clear, red, gold or silver) is acceptable but not necessary.

Another note... rainbow trout will cruise these marl shoals and weedbeds all day however they appear to be most active in low light conditions (overcast) or when the sun is in a low position... 2 hours before sunset or within 2 hours after sunrise.

It takes a lot of patience, even for experienced fishermen to master this technique but when you do, you will be well rewarded and forever smitten.

Dave Ouellette worked with Ducks Unlimited Canada in the British Columbia interior for 11 years and had a virtual run on some of the best fly fishing lakes in BC. While constructing over 200 conservation wetland segments in southern /south-central BC, Dave managed to fish almost as many lakes and streams in his travels. Now, as an avid fly fisherman, Dave spends most of his ice free seasons devoting intense research and development days to the rainbow trout of the Kamloops area lakes.

The first thing most people learn in fly fishing is how to tie flies, but learning to set up your rod should really be the first step.

The very first thing you need to learn about setting up and using your fly fishing equipment is that there is always two ways to do everything involved with the sport. Well, maybe not always, sometime there are three or more ways to do it. Every fly fishing book you read will give you a slightly different take on the best way to do everything. This duality runs through the entire sport. There are two types of rods; there are two types of reel; there are two types of line, etc.

The key to rod selection and set up is the type of fishing that is going to be done. It would be great if there was a one rod fits all types of fishing situation here, but this is just not the case. The rod length might be around six feet for fishing small streams and up to fifteen feet when fishing salt water flats. The most recent trend in fly fishing rods is toward shorter and lighter rods as fishing in smaller bodies of water for different species has become popular. Still, you need to match the rod to the type of fishing you are planning or else expect to get several rods of different sizes.

The beginner is going to do best with a medium size rod. This will usually serve him for the first couple of years. He will be able to use it for both smaller and larger bodies of water and fish sizes. He will not have the best choice for either extreme, but will be safely in the middle no matter where he is fishing. As his own experience grows, he can select a rod more in line with his fishing interest.

When you are learning how to set up a fly fishing rod, give special attention to the line selection. Unlike casting rods, the line is more known for other attributes than just break strength. Quality line is essential. The big problem is what is called reel memory. The line must be played out fairly straight and natural to give the best presentation of the fly. Reel memory is where the line twists when played out due to being wound on the reel. Higher quality fly fishing line has virtually no reel memory.

The actual line is not attached directly to the spool as in casting reels. Rather it is attached to another section of line called the backing. Knowledge of knots is essential to preparing the fly rod. The Boy Scout merit badge illustrates this point as it requires that you demonstrate three different style knots. The backing is attached to the fly reel spool with an arbor backing knot. Then the backing is attached to the actual fly line with a nail knot. A short leader is attached to the end of the actual fly line with any one of three different knots. Finally, the fly itself most be attached to the leader.

Tmc Hook
Is my HD hooked up right?

I was watching a best buy commercial and they were talking up HD being done right. How do you get it wrong? I got a picture for the HD channels. It looks better than standard definition. My HDMI input even works, but is it done right?

The problem is that although it looks better than a standard tv it doesn't seem like that a big of a leap. It feels more like DVD quality, but if that was the case we wouldn't need HD DVDs. Is it the channels I have (hbo, starz, sho, tmc, nbc, abc, and pbs) Does Discovry HD Theatre or HDnet show it off the best or is my HD truly not hooked up right. It was hooked up my a cable (mediacom) technician.

You may be running into the problem of video compression. If your cable system has to compress the signal too much then you lose quality. Thats what the problem with the sat.s had (at least in the beginning). If your TV has a HDTV tuner built in and its ATSC, you might try just plugging in an antenna for just a little bit and see if you can get any local channels, then see if there is a difference. Most local broadcasts at this point are not HD but the big network feeds (CSI, NCIS, NUMB3RS, LOST....) are usually broadcast in HD.
Hope this helps.

My favorite technique of fly fishing in late summer or early fall is a dry line and long leader in shallow water with a little shrimp Hyalella.

The onset of cooler weather triggers the fish to begin their pre-Creek winter. Shrimp Hyalella funds are abundant in the marl and weeds along the shallow beds. In many lakes to find fish in Kamloops cruise only 2 feet of water, adding that "sight fishing" experience increased dramatically. A good pair of Polaroid sunglasses come real good time too!

I do not know how long the leader makes a difference, but it does. We have linked our 20 'leading to 24' fluorocarbon tapered. The fish cruise around, sometimes in schools, sometimes by themselves, make their way along the bottom, absorbing hundreds of small shrimp.

Recovery is probably the most important. Without using a strike indicator, laid beside the bed of weeds (or fish if you see them), leaving the shrimp are then deposited in the fund. Gently tighten the line to straighten. With the patience of a hooking chironimid gradually recovering shrimp. Let stand at times and continue to recover. Speeds extremely slow in the 2-short, light series inch. If you throw the weeds have to adjust the speed to avoid a wing flies are so small that move along up.The more than bad herbs, provided that you keep the fly moving.

Hyalella shrimp are a staple of the rainbow trout especially in the fall and bloom in or marl beds of weeds. Sometimes, my fishing buddy KJ, and have seen fish that have been involuntarily committed suicide following a shrimp veins in the clay. What seems to happen is to go after the shrimp, and take refuge in the loam finally have their heads buried in the clay. If marl crosses part of the plate Gill, the fish is stuck like a barbed hook, and can not go back. Then a choked to death. It is an event rare to see.

Here is a list of lakes that I like to fish for shrimp with Hyalella Shallow Marl in the Kamloops area. These lakes are marl bottom white (except Bleeker)

Peter Hope - great apartments around the lake marl

Roche Lake - South and South Island

Black Lake near Roche Lake - fabulous structure around the lake

Hosli Lake - near Roche - 4x4 needed here if the road is wet or mud. In the banking the rocks by the lake is also known for its great sedge hatches in June and July.

Bleeker Lake - Roche, near Lake

Community Lake - Floor stretched along the coast and around islands

... and much more.

Sometimes when fishing for large apartments marl Peter Hope Lake, Rock Lake and even community, there is a possibility that you can see what I mean. My friend and I KJ Found 4 years, 5 pounds of dead fish, tail and head in the last two years. It is disturbing to see.

Be prepared for a fight mad, especially when fish are more than 20 inches in shallow waters. The lack of depth is the vertical distance of fish to the horizontal career, often in several circles around the boat. My personal best rate is 6 plies complete circle before getting the fish.

Shrimp Hyalella have a wide range of natural colors with different degrees of natural tones. Try a light beige to brown, mint green to olive green or dark green prawns or gray with orange patterns.
