Fish Rod

Can I fly fish with a regular rod?

I have the fly fishing reel, but just a regular bait casting rod. Can i use both of them together to fly fish?

If you have a fairly long (7'+) light-action baitcasting rod, it might work reasonably well. If not, then you could try putting small split shot sinkers on the flies and fish them like a jig.

The founding father of the Penn International product series is the Penn Fishing Tackle Company. This company was founded in 1932 by Otto Henze, and since then the company has become one of the most renowned manufacturers of fishing gears in the world. Today it has become one of the most leading manufacturers of Penn fishing rods as well as the Penn reels. Because of the reliable products of Penn International, millions of anglers, whether experienced or not, put their trust on their products. Some of the best and most recent Penn fishing rods that have gained wide popularity are as below:

Penn Slammer Rod

The original Penn Slammer Rod has been redesigned and upgraded both cosmetically as well as functionally for improved performance and durability. Formerly, these rods featured a white, heavy-walled glass blank which was more akin to a broomstick than a fishing rod. The standard, redesigned Slammer rods feature a charcoal colored, lightweight, but powerful glass blank. Anglers will notice immediately, a more user-friendly, faster tapered blank that provides for improved leverage, fish-fighting power, as well as a much better feel.

Penn Guide Bluewater Rods

While fishing for sardines or a sailfish, the Penn Guide Bluewater Series Rods are an ideal choice. Tapers and actions of Penn's Guide Series Bluewater Rods have been tweaked to perfection, providing anglers with a rod ideal for their Bluewater fishery. Guide Series Rods feature simple and classic wraps for a true-custom look, while featuring K1 Graphite Cloth, the tightest woven graphite on the market.

Penn Senator Combos

The Penn Senator, still holding claim to a large number of world records, is an icon in saltwater fishing; they are durable, reliable, and capable. When paired with Penn Slammer Rods for a factory-matched combo, you are assured of a balanced combo, created for fishing a variety of species. From trolling for bluefish to bottom fishing for grouper, Penn Senator Combos are an excellent choice.

Penn International V IGFA Rods

With its distinctive diamond wrap and quality components, International V-Series IGFA Rods were created for traditional big-game anglers. All Penn International Rods are constructed to be the finest crafted fishing rods you will ever own. With matching threadwork, common on all International rods from V-Series IGFA Trolling Rods down through the light-tackle International Inshore and shallow Water Rods, International Rods offer anglers a Custom, matched look.

Penn Fishing Rods offer anglers the finest quality constructed rods at incredible values. Each rod blank is selected for a specific action and application, creating a finished rod perfectly constructed and balanced for specific fisheries or styles. Unlike other factory rods, Penn Rods are carefully hand selected, properly splinted to ensure consistent and unwavering rod bend, and then hand wrapped in color schemes to perfectly match Penn Reels.

The above paragraphs summarize the views and ideas of experts who are completely familiar with all the aspects of fishing gears. Their views are generally accepted by all dedicated anglers and those who enjoy fishing.

Freshwater Fly
Fly Fishing Questions... Please help me out!?

A.) How should I tie the knot to the fly? I did it the way I tie my knots to my lures when freshwater fishing, but it makes the fly sit on its side or upside down. (Which I imagine wont be attractive to the fish.)

B.) How long should I let a fly sit before recasting it?

C.) Once casted how far away should the fly be from the yellow line in order to not spook the fish, and still make the presentation attractive to them?

D.) I can only seem to cast the fly about 20-25 feet. Is that about normal?

Answers to any or all of these questions would be greatly appreciated. Please dont answer my questions with questions. icon smile Freshwater Fly

THANKS A BUNCH! 10 points best answer

A half blood knot is what i always use to attach my flies, but this can work(its good for fluorocarbon line too)

http://www.animatedknots.com/improvedcli...

B.I assume your fishing a dry if you say let it sit, well with lots of gink to keep it afloat cast it and leave it as long as possible, the occasional twitch of the fly line can help, if its nymphs they must also be fished slow let them drift with the current and if needed bring them back with a slow figure of eight retrieve. If you see a fish rise, bring your fl back in and cast about four feet infront of it, this is when good casting is needed.
D.Casting can be hard but once mastered it can be very useful, you should be able to catch on a stocked lake with that kind of cast but a little more distance would be better, the only way to do that is to practice, also make sure your using a WF line and a medium to fast action rod

*C* you need a leader length of about 12 feet, this will stop the fish being spooked,a tapered leader will help to present your dry flies better

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templa...

Fish one fly at a time, its better to fish one fly properly than three flies incorrectly. When your tapered leader becomes short add a length of tippet to increase its length, this can be fluorocarbon or copolymer, dont use fluorocarbon with dry flies as it will pull them under.

Read through this and you will get lots of info, dont let the name stop you it is fly fishing

Welcome to our series of articles on fishing gear in fresh water. With this series we hope to get the fright of purchase fishing equipment for novice anglers.

We will address a wide range of fishing reels, rods, lures, baits, jigs, lines and hooks. Is expected by the end of the series you can go online and buy the right equipment and budget.

We begin our discussion of reels Fishing Freshwater Spincast reel, reel best for beginners and occasional anglers. This article deals with the wheel drum, and continue Baitcast Reel and Finally, an article on the reel fly fishing.

Spinning Reels come in many varieties and are used by children, sometimes with enthusiasm and amateur fisherman alike. When these fishing reels, a spinning reel is the best known and most sold. Mainly used for applications line and light standards in terms of performance and ease of use.

The spinning reel is ideal for catching fish almost all there, in the case of ponds, streams, lakes or rivers. You can catch Largemouth bass, channel catfish, trout and rainbow Small bluegill and sun fish, no matter if the line is strong enough for your spinning reel to land the fish.

The coil has a term very Look especially thick bundles of wire around the spool of line open face and a line drive to help keep the line as you retrieve it. The retractor or crank handle may have one or two buttons, both work equally well for reducing friction in line as they recover with little or no grumbling. This type of coil is mounted on the bottom of the stem.

There are some drawbacks to the spool rotation. There is only limited by the size of your line fishing from Baitcast reel line has less. This means that you must use a finer line and light, ensuring that the line is sufficient to position desired. The lighter the line of small fish may be taken. The spinning reel is not as precise as the reel in casting Baitcast

A good example of the coil at the wheel is the "Pflueger Trion GX-7 Spinning Reel" at a price less than $ 40 is an affordable option for fishing rights in general, with lightweight graphite body and tail rotor anodized aluminum body with titanium lip.

The next revision of our series will highlight reel Baitcast, a reel for serious anglers to master.

Need some fishing help got a couple questions...?

So im taking this test for work...and i need a little help with these questions....here we go..

#1 In fly fishing what is the difference between double taper and weight forward fly line?

#2 What is the main feature and benefit of the new lightweight fishing waders?

#3 what is the main benefits of the spectra type line that leads to it recent popularity?

#4 what are the benefits of fiberglass and graftif rods?

#5 what is the main advantage of a felt sole wader?

#6 What technology enable fish finders to work effectively?

#7 What are the benefits of color in fishing lures?

Thanks in advance

couple ?????

1.. double means both ends are tapered, no front or back. weight forward means the weight is on the front side of the line, the casting end.

2.. either light in weight or light in insulation. first on is obvious. the latter is for warm water only, so you do not freeze.

3.. no comment

4.. graphite is a carbon based material- very tough, sensitive and light in weight. fiberglass is the tough, sensitive, but weighs a bit more than graphite. (hope that is what you want, never heard of graftif)

5.. better traction on flat surfaces.

6.. better sonar technology, advances in technology throughout

7.. different prey, different colors; water color, when fishing with egg or egg sacks, different age of the egg is different colors.

For more than twenty five years I've been using ultra light fishing tackle and have learned that fishing with ultralight gear is one of the most enjoyable ways to catch fish. When I use the term 'tackle' or 'gear' I'm referring specifically to the rod, reel, and line that are employed while fishing. When you downsize your rod, reel, and line, the baits and lures that you use will also become smaller, mostly out of necessity.

This type of fishing can be done for type of fish. In my opinion 'ultra light' fishing is simply matching your rod reel and line to the size of fish you intend to catch, then as your skills become better, it means catching fish larger than your gear and line would suggest. For example catching five to six pound trout or smallmouth bass while using a four foot ultra light rod and matching reel, spooled with four pound test. The same rule holds true when fishing for ten pound steelhead with a medium action rod and reel, spooled with eight pound test.

Fishing with light tackle also makes you become a better angler. It forces you to learn how to "play" your catch, rather than just winching your fish in. I'm not a fly fisherman, but one of the best quotes ever made came from the fly fishing movie A River Runs Through It. In this movie the reverend Mclean is said to have said, "Anyone who does not know how to catch a fish should be able to disgrace that fish by catching it."

To me this quote sums up ultra light fishing quite nicely. This type of fishing literally forces you to become a better angler and learn "how" to catch fish, rather than relying on some sort of luck from the fishing Gods. The bottom line is that if you use quality rods, reels, and line ultra light fishing will most certainly result in catching more fish. This is one of the keys to ultra light fishing tackle. You always want to purchase quality gear and line.

When fishing with ultra light gear that gear gets put to the test. The drag on your reel, for example, is of the utmost importance. This is why purchasing quality reels such as those made by Pflueger, is so important. How about fishing line? I've always been a fan of Stren monofilament, although any name brand manufacturer will work fine. Skimping on the cost of line is never a good idea when it comes to ultra light fishing tackle.

The same rule applies to your fishing rod. In many instances sub par quality ultra light rods have a very "whippy" quality to them. When you hold them in you hand and shake the rod tip, it feels almost as if you're holding some sort of whip. An ultra light rod should have some 'backbone' to it for quality hook sets. Although they are a bit expensive, St. Croix makes great light fishing rods that last a lifetime and perform wonderfully.

The bottom line is that light fishing tackle is the way to go if you want to catch more fish, have more fun, and become a better angler. Give it a try and find out for yourself just how enjoyable fishing with ultra light tackle can be.

Saltwater Fly Line
Would the SA mastery series wf-9-f steelhead line turnover my pike/saltwater flies ave 2/3 inhes on 1/0 hooks?

would this line work if modified ie cut the front taper back and/ or use polytips?

If your using a wf 9wt line you cant modify it into a a taper, i also don't think there is any need for poly leaders on a 9wt outfit anyway. Scientific anglers steel head line is a good line for good turnovers anyway so all i would advise is a tapered mono filament leader and a good fluorocarbon tippet, if its a floating line there is no need for poly leaders, although they do have an advantage on intermediate and sinking lines. Don't do anything to the line and you will get some good distance casts out of it. If your getting better at casting use a DT line as this will increase your distance.

Sports like any other recreational activities require both mental agility and physical strength. But like any sport of all, each athlete needs a good team to function well. A tennis player has experienced three or more rockets in his tennis bag whenever you go to practice or games.

In the case of fishing or recreational fishing or fishing just for fun, you always have a good team to get better every time you grab the bar immersion in water.

People who come to fish or fishing does not really think that everything you need in the fishing rod, line, reels and bait bucket. But the truth is there So every good fisherman knows. His gear while fishing, includes everything in your tackle box has all the tips for a good catch.

If you're new to fishing, do not be discouraged if you find your tackle box incomplete in comparison with an experienced fisherman. Put everything in a tackle box requires years of experience in finding the best combinations of material to make a good tackle box. To get started, just to have a decent team and build from there.

If you're really into fishing, the time comes to make you feel as some teams fill their tackle box fishing. To begin with, is good that you should buy a generous supply of hooks of different sizes, then the fishing line and weights.

In the fishing line, make sure that the line is of adequate size to deal with fisheries specific. Weight may be composed of different types of metals, but the weight of the girl he was very discouraging for those who are highly toxic. In addition, make sure it is heavy enough to sink your bait.

Additional equipment such as lures come in different shapes, colors and sizes. But most fishermen prefer to make appeals on their own. Lures are important to capture the attention of fish.

Buy things to fill your tackle box can be very interesting, but need not be expensive.

Fishing can be an fun and relaxing hobby, but if you donÂ’t have the right fishing tackle it can become an exercise in frustration very quickly. If you donÂ’t use the right lures, poles and line you wonÂ’t be able to attract or land those fish so choosing the right equipment is key. Here are some simple guidelines that will help you choose fishing gear that will help you land that big one!

1. Fishing Flies are made to imitate the bugs fish love to eat, but did you know that fish are aware of which hatches are happening in their water? This means that you have to choose flies that represent the types of insects that are naturally available to the fish. Knowing what insects are abundant in the area you are fishing will help you choose a fly that imitates that particular insect.

2. There are 3 types of tackle, spinning, plug casting and fly fishing. Plug casting and spinning use bait to drag the line down to the fish. Fly fishing uses a fly that rests on the top of the water. ItÂ’s important to know which type of fishing you want to do since that dictates the type of fishing line.

3. Fly fishing lines come in 3 different kinds and each kind has numerous variations. The major types are level taper, shooting taper, double taper and weight forward. Lines come in different weights from 1 to 15. Typically you will want the first 30 feet of line to be weighted to the rod.

4. The rod and reel are important fishing tackle and you want to buy a fairly good one so you can feel the fish on the line. The best for beginners is a spin casting reel since it is easy to operate. A light action six foot casting rod is usually a good choice and the reel should be spooled with an 8 pound test line. A lot of times you can buy the rod and reel together as a package deal in the stores.

5. You want to stock your tackle box with bobber, sinkers and hooks which you can buy different sizes and styles of. YouÂ’ll probably want to start with a few different types and then figure out which suits you best. When it comes to bobbers the smaller it is the better the performance.

6. There is a huge variety of artificial lures out there and every fisherman has his favorite. You might check at the local fishing store near the body of water you want to fish in to find what colors, styles are working best in that area. That being said, youÂ’ll want to have a large variety of lures in your tackle box so that youÂ’ll be prepared for any situation.

Fishing tackle can be costly, but you do need to have somewhat of a variety of items in order to be able to fish under different circumstances. You can start out with a few things and grow your collection gradually over time - after all, thatÂ’s part of the fun of the sport!

Lee Dobbins writes for Fishing Gear Tips where you can learn more about lures, reels, rods and choosing the right fishing tackle.

Wulff Fly

I like the royal Wulff fly, but is it different in any way from the royal coachman?

I love to fish with the royal wulff, but a friend recommended a royal coachman, he said they work tons better, but is there a difference?

Okay, let me see if I can get this right. The Coachman is a very old fly that probably originated in Europe in the 1700s or earlier, but don't quote me on that. In any case, it's considered a "traditional fly," as in we don't know who invented it. I don't know if anyone even uses it anymore. The Coachman was basically peacock herl and brown wet fly hackle. Nothing fancy at all. An American fly tier named John Haily is the inventor of the Royal Coachman, which is a pattern that takes the old Coachman and fortifies it with red thread bands and the barred tail feathers. So, from the Coachman, an old traditional fly, we get the Royal Coachman. The original Coachman and Royal Coachman were wet flies and, like most flies of that time, they were nonrepresentational. That is, they were attractor patterns that did not imitate any one form of trout forage -- might look like a nymph, maybe a minnow, maybe a terrestrial.

Now you need to know about Lee Wulff. He is an American fly fishing innovator from the early-mid-1900s. He did a LOT to advance the art and sport of fly fishing, too much to say here, but two things he did were to make fly fishing tackle lighter and more compact, and he helped to advance the art of dry flies. He is the inventor of the original Wulff flies, obviously. The first Wulff flies were basically very high-floating dry flies, named after the main color of the materials -- White Wulff, Gray Wulff, etc. Wulff invented the Royal Wulff by basing a new dry fly on the old Royal Coachman, with the body of peacock herl, bands of red thread, and barred tail feathers. So, you could say that the Royal Wulff is an evolution of the Royal Coachman, which was based on the Coachman (which was probably based on something even earlier).

Most of the Royal Coachman flies I see in shops are dry flies, and most of the Royal Coachman recipes I see are for dry flies, or perhaps you might call them dry-wets. The Royal Wulff is and always was a dry. Do they fish differently? Yeah. Most Wulff flies are designed to ride very high on the water and are great for skittering and waking attacks. Is one of these flies "tons better" than the other? Probably not. They are both attractors and if a fish hits one of them, that same fish probably would have hit the other.

Czerwinski: Big chill, thick ice, let's fish
So is it cold enough for you yet? If you’re a fan of ice fishing, the answer probably is a resounding no. But take heart, because this latest blast of winter chill we’ve been going through may just be (pardon the pun) the tip of the iceberg.

Fishing Pack

What should we pack for a day fishing trip?

We are going for a day fishing trip what all should we pack oh it's me and my parents and yonger sibings

If you're going on a party boat out on the ocean (from your name I assume you're in L.A., so that may be what you're asking about), start with comfortable clothes and a windbreaker in case a breeze comes up, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat with a brim. Shoes which won't be ruined by water (don't wear sandals). It's useful to have a small towel to wipe your hands off with. Bring a camera, too. Motion sickness pills (take before the boat leaves), unless you've been on the ocean before and know you don't have a problem with seasickness.

Food and drinks will be on sale on the boat, or you can bring a sack lunch. (Party boats don't allow you to bring coolers.) Some operations have regulations about bringing drinks aboard, but a bottle of water should be no problem.

You should also bring money to tip the crew (assuming you have a good time), pay for food, and for fish cleaning.

As far as fishing tackle, that will vary with where you're fishing and what you're fishing for. You can generally rent it at the landing. Same with the bait and hooks and sinkers. Check with the boat or landing for details -- most of them have websites, and get to the landing well before departure so you can ask questions and buy whatever is needed. As for specific fishing questions out on the boat, ask the crew.

what is the value of a wright & mcgill nyla glass fly rod?

model nd66l

I have the best answer for your question "What is the value of a wright & mcgill nyla glass fly rod?". Please click the link below to check my answer:

Collecting old fishing tackle and lures is an interesting and natural extension to the sport of fishing. It has been one of the most unexploited areas of collecting in America. And, luckily there have been millions upon millions of pieces of tackle lures handcrafted and made since the early fishing days so there is still plentiful supply of nice examples to go around. To get started, try some old "general stores", drugstores (used to carry bass plugs), bait shops and hardware stores in your area, especially their storerooms, attics, basements and storage area. There has been many a treasured fishing lure turn up by feeling around a dusty top shelf storage rooms.

Many fisherman still use a vintage reel and some use them for reasons besides performance. Vintage reels are solid reels but the fact is that parts are hard to come by. Add to the fact the low gear ratio compared to the ones now, vintage reels just end up on a shelf collecting dust. There's nothing wrong with using a vintage reel for everyday fishing, these reels are what made the reels we use today. If you can find the parts for these vintage reels, by all means fish on. If not, it's best to keep it in working order.

Many collectors specialize in one type of rod, reel or lure. If you are looking for info on Bamboo Fly rods, a good book I recommend is by Michael Sinclair, The Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook. Lots of information and drawings to help identify rod manufacturers and when the rod was built. I have also been able to identify cane rods that were not for fly fishing using the information in this book. If you want information on other types of rods I don't know of any good source other than doing internet searches. Try looking at Heddon, Shakespeare, and Wright McGill. I have found info doing research around these names.

Czech Nymph Fly Selection

There is one essential thing that the fly fisherman will need when Czech nymphing, that is heavy flies! Usually using a team of 3 flies on droppers with the point fly being the heaviest fly. A Caddis fly can be 5.5gm in weight, this is not a problem as the flies are not cast as traditional flies but lowered into the water.

Cased Caddis - The Prey Of Trout and Grayling

Caddis Flies are widespread across Europe wherever water is available, either static or running. However, the adult is a strong flyer and can move some distance from ponds, streams and rivers, especially as it is attracted to light. However it is the larvae form that is a key part of the diet for fish such as trout. The larvae which make a "case" in which to live using small stones, sand, pieces of leaves and all glued together with a silk lining inside. The silk is spun with a secretion from labial glands (around the mouth) like moth larvae. When full-grown the larva pupates in the case which stops being mobile and may be glued down to a rock.

The cased forms feed on vegetation whilst the caseless forms tend to be either carnivorous or detritivores. The predatory ones are those free living. The web-spinning, caseless larvae may create a silk tube in which to live whilst those in moving water spin the web between stones. This web may trap small invertebrates drifting with the current. This invertebrate drift, as it is known, is an abundant source of food as the current constantly dislodges animals living on the bottom of streams and rivers. Many of these caseless caddis larvae are associated with particular speeds of flow. However, much of what they catch will just be drifting detritus and other organic particulate matter on which the larva will feed (hence detritivore). Some particulate matter will be drifting plankton. Those larvae in especially fast flowing water, e.g. Hydropsyche, will have toughened upper parts to the thoracic segments (thickened external skeleton is referred to as being sclerotised). The larvae have their abdomens safely in the silk tube but the front section of the body protruding into the current. This sclerotisation may be an adaptation to protect them from small stones and other material hitting them.

It is this caddis that is one of our primary fishing imitations when Czech nymphing. Below are different imitations that can be used in descending weight order, with the heavyweights of the Czech nymphing world described first.

Czech Bottle Fly - Super Heavyweight Fly Fishing Flies

Czech bottle nymphs are the "bruisers" of the fly fishing world. Designed to hold bottom in the fastest of waters a Czech bottle nymph is a uniquely designed fishing fly. The Bottle Fly is a complete fly, designed in the shape of a bottle and is available in 2.2gm, 3.4gm, 4.4gm and even 5.5gm weights. The fly is manufactured from pre-made moulds which are tied very simply, the bottle is rolled in glue and sand is rolled onto the fly, a hackle is then simply tied to the front. The finished fly is identical to a caddis in its nest described above. The beauty of this fly being that it will hold bottom or take a team of flies to the bottom of the fastest of rivers. We use this for sea trout frequently as it can be used to hold a snake fly low in the fastest of waters!

Traditional Czech Nymphs - Heavy Fly Fishing Flies

These are the more "traditional" Czech nymphs used around the world. These are still a heavy fly, often tungsten weighted to keep the fly low in the water. Czech nymphs are available in a range of colours, from pea green to cream and red, from hares ear and amber to sparkle and orange. They key with these colours is actually that the Czech nymphing technique is forcing the trout to make a rapid decision, fast water with stimulating colours is often deadly.

A technique I frequently use is to use a heavy fly, often a bottle fly on the point with a natural colours Czech nymph on one dropper and a nymphs with colours on the second dropper. Using this technique you can see what the trout are eating before focusing on specific colours.

Goldhead / Beadhead Fly Fishing Flies

These are the "lightweight flies" used in Czech nymphing. The Goldhead or Beadhead fly has a small bead which gives it weight, ideal in slower rivers when Czech nymphing and frequently used as an alternative dropper.

Standard Nymphs

Do not forget to truly work a team of droppers, there is nothing to stop the fly fisherman using a standard caddis, nymph, stonefly or other fly on a dropper when Czech nymphing, the key is that it needs to be kept low and close to the river bottom.

Fishing Tackle

does pepsi or coke help remove rust of fishing tackle without giving it any bad odour?

just wondering
im thinking of cleaning older hooks and lures that have rusted
wuld it be fine putting them in pepsi or coke for a day or 2 so that the rust could be removed?

has any1 tried this?
thanks!

Mythbusters tried it & found it didn't do anything for rust, but it did wonders in shining up the chrome on cars & bikes.

If you want a cheap way to clean light rust from metal, mix salt & white vinegar. Normally you would rub it over the metal's surface, but you'd probably hook yourself. I would just use a old toothbrush on the hook.

As they say, 'one trip to Bali is never enough'. Vast, seemingly endless beaches, beautiful tropical landscapes, the fascinating culture, amazingly hospitable people and shopping for local crafts continue to attract repeat visitors to Bali, time and time again.

However, as I have been discovering in my recent trips, staying at Mia Villa Bali Rental, there is more to this tropical paradise than meets the eye.

Today you can also add to my list above, the attraction of a myriad of activities catering to both the action oriented holiday maker and the more staid.

Here is a starter list of 10 new things you may want to try when you are next in Bali:

1) Bird Park

You don't need to be a bird watcher to enjoy this colourful park. Take a morning off, and discover the beauty of an array of tropical birds Bali has to offer. Even better, arrive later in the afternoon, and enjoy some amazing sun-set melodies. A great choice for enthusiasts and families. (located at Taman Burung - open 08:00 – 18:00 daily)

2) Cruising

Pick a boat of your choice, and head for the high seas! Nowadays Bali has a great selection of safe boats to choose from. Go for a fun filled family outing or go more adventurous with some of the latest cutting edge crafts which deliver the speed. (Bali Hai Cruises, Sea Safari Cruises, Bounty Cruises)

3) Dance Performances

Be enthralled by unique Balinese dances! Try to catch one of each of: Kecak, Legong and Fire Dances, at least. There are dozens of different troupes to choose from, each with their own following. Keep in mind, shows in hotels and tourist restaurants offer vanilla flavour, and sometimes mechanical re-creations of the real thing. Head out to some of the villages, and you will be handsomely rewarded with the authentic fare.

4) Designer Shopping

No, I am not talking about the 'fake originals' that litter the streets of many other Asian locations. In the recent years, Bali has attracted some of the most talented original designers, and artists from around the world (both the East and the West). This coupled with the inherent artistic capabilities of the Balinese, means that Bali today enjoys a large number of original designer shops. You can find anything from post-modern lighting installations, to Imperial Chinese style sideboards, and from original water fountain designs to some of the best jewelry designed and manufactured anywhere in the world.

5) Diving

Put your PADI license to use, or if you are a diving newbie, just do it, and get your PADI certificate in Bali! A range of dive organizers for the experienced, and dive schools for the new comers are available to choose from. Some offer PADI 'Youth Scuba' courses for ages 5+.

6) Dolphin Watching

Enjoy these all-time favourites in their natural habitat. They are at their best first thing in the morning. Also, the soft hues of the sun-rise provide amazing colours for the photography enthusiasts. However, you will need to plan ahead for this one, since Lovina is in the North of the island, and you will more than likely be staying in a hotel or a rental villa in the south.

7) Fishing

Go after that marlin or try your hand at yellow fin tuna! Most boats provide full tackle, bait and a running commentary, a friendly, giggly banter which makes the day out that much more enjoyable. (fishing boats from Benoa Harbour or Sanur)

Elephant Safari Park

Arguably, one of the best in South East Asia! Great location and landscaped gardens. Don't forget to do the elephant safari ride.

9) Jet Skiing

Re-create those favourite Baywatch moments! Due to their environmental impact, only available at some selected beaches across the island. (available at Grand Hyatt Nusa Dua).

10) Go-Karting

Only for those who get withdrawal symptoms from being away from the hustle and bustle of big-city life! All the noise, thrills and danger of the real thing! Choice of single or double carts.

Many happy returns!

Beautiful photos of one of my favorite Bali rental villas. This is Albia Villa, my other favorite. Also, you can get more Bali villa rental deals, great for last minute trips.
