Fishing is a great hobby, giving you the chance to be out in the fresh air and sunshine while you're relaxing. You can get far away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, and be at one with nature.

Like most hobbies, fishing requires some basic equipment. Fishing tackle is the gear you use to get artificial or live bait in front of a fish. You don't need much tackle to get started in fishing, but it's important to get the basics right. You can always add more tackle once your skill level improves, and you're ready to use more advanced tackle.

Rod and Reel

This is probably the most important piece of tackle. It's good to start off with a lightweight rod and spinner reel, because they're easier to handle and make it simpler to tell when youÂ’ve had a bite. Quite often you can purchase this as one unit. If you're just thinking about taking up fishing, borrow one from a friend to try it out. A fishing rod suitable for an adult is usually 6 feet long, and a child's rod 4 to 5 feet long.

Fishing Line

Fishing line is also called filament, and you can buy it in a variety of sizes or strengths. The strength is measured in a unit called pound-test, and the higher the pound-test number, the stronger the fishing line. It's important to choose line that matches your rod and reel, the bait you use and the fish you're planning to catch. If youÂ’ve got a small, lightweight rod, and use spin casting or a spinning reel, you only need line up to 6 pound-test. The most popular line is in the 8 to 16 pound-test range. It's important not to use too heavy a line, though, because it becomes more visible to the fish. Most basic equipment and kids' rods are best used with 8 pound-test fishing line.

Bait

Bait can be either live or artificial, and there are plenty of varieties. You can always use the old favorite from the garden, earthworms, particularly if you have an active compost heap. If you don't have your own worms, you can buy them, or else use mealworms, grubs, kernel corn or bread balls.

Floats

Floats, or bobbers, are attached to the fishing line, and sit on the water surface. When the float dips into the water, you know a fish has taken a bite. It's best to use small floats, with just enough weight to stop the bait dragging it under the water. Pencil shaped bobbers are the most sensitive, but you can also use a round bobber which is generally easier to cast. Slip bobbers are easy to adjust and use, and are great for beginners and children.

Hooks

You can buy fishhooks in a large range of sizes and styles. If you're going to use live bait, you'll probably find it easiest to buy a variety pack, so that you get a range of hooks from size No. 6 to No. 10. If you're after bigger fish, get larger hooks. For catch and release fishing, you need to flatten the barbs on your fishhook, to minimize damage to the inside of the fish's mouth. As a general rule of thumb, work out what type of fish you're planning to catch and use a hook that's compatible with the size of the fish's mouth. If it's too small, the fish will swallow the hook, and if it's too big, the fish won't take the bait.

Sinkers or Weights

You need these to stop your line from floating on the surface of the water. You can get everything from split shot sinkers that range from tiny through to pencil size, right up to sinkers that weight a pound or more. For beginners and children, use split shot. Make sure they're lead free to protect the environment.

Other Gear

Now that you have everything you need, it's time for the best part - going fishing! Head off for a nice shady spot on the bank of a stream, relax, and wait for a fish to nibble on the bait.

No matter what level of experience you have as a fisherman, you will benefit greatly from having the right reel for the job. You can easily learn what you should be using though and improve your skill because of it. There are three different types that you need to consider. These are the casting reel, the fly casting reel and the spin casting reel.

The Bait Casting Reel

These are quite difficult. The line on them is pulled off the rod by the lureÂ’s weight. It is then thrust forward in the motion of casting. They provide a device that lays the line evenly across the rotating cylinder that acts like the core of the reel. Without a smooth cast it will cause problems when the line is reeled in. The line can become tangled, too.

The Fly Fishing Reel

In a fly fishing real, you need to insure that it has a drag that is very responsive. Then, youÂ’ll need to purchase a reel that can stand the tension and strain put on it by a large fish. These are more expensive reels than other types. Make sure to check to make sure there are no plastic parts on the reel. All metal reels are much more dependable and they make it worth the price.

The Spinning Reel

The closed faced reel is the inexpensive spinning reel. It is also fairly easy to control. This is probably the choice you would make for those who are learning to fish. They have a push button release for casting. They have an opening at the top where the line comes out when you cast. The reel will mount on your rod.

The open faced spinning rod is a more challenging option. It comes in many sizes to fit your needs. The lightest models are excellent for pan fish. Larger choices will help you with game fishing or ocean fishing. The line capacity on these is greater and is serviceable when you are after trout or even salmon. They offer a smooth drag. Although you can start with a closed face, you can improve your skills and move on to the open faced.

If you are only choosing one type of reel, go with a medium speed one. If two, then look for both a low speed and a high speed. Also, you should choose the right reel depending on if you are left handed or right handed. Also, remember that the lighter the line is, the smaller the reel. That's the knob that controls the magnetic spool brake on the reel. It's designed to help prevent backlashes (birdsnests) by slowing the spool down as you cast. The higher the setting the faster the spool slows. The "max" in this case means maximum brakes. It will also limit your casting distance slightly.

Our series of articles on Freshwater Fishing Tackle continues as we attempt to remove the fright of purchasing fishing gear from the novice angler.

I personally had to do it the difficult way, I bought tackle that seemed good but was completely incorrect for the chore at hand. With the many reels and rods on the market, not to mention the billions of jigs, hooks, sinkers, line types and other fishing accessories; how could a beginner not make a few inappropriate and expensive wrong decisions?

We started our series on freshwater fishing tackle with the reel; including the spincast and spinning reels. Now we will cover the Ferrari of the fishing domain the Baitcast Reel; also referred to as Baitcaster, baitcasting, casting reel, and a conventional reel.

Baitcast reels can handle larger lines and permits longer casts than spinning reels in the comparable size range. Fishermen frequently use line in the 14- to 17-pound-test range.

The design of the baitcaster allows for precision casting to get the lure precisely where you desire it. They use very tough drag mechanisms to slow larger, stronger fish and are intended to be used with bigger lures.

The baitcast reel is the favorite reel for getting Striped Bass, Bream, Steelhead and more. Because of its casting accuracy it is great for fishing in water where snags can be a trouble or for casting below spans and walkways with limited head room.

Baitcast reels have a rotating spool with the line spooled the same way as the line as it runs down the fishing rod. They have a center pin and the disks are joined by a series of outer pins that exposes the line. Some are built partially from composites, but most are still stainless steel, often with brass pieces in certain areas. The baitcast reel attaches on top of the fishing rod.

Because of it's above the rod mounting the baitcast reel is more troublesome to cast and has a much greater learning curve than either the spincast or spinning reels. For this reason it is not a effective entry level reel for kids or the starting angler.

Also its steeper cost makes it cost prohibitive for the casual weekend fisherman who will only fish from time to time. Lastly since it is principally a cast reel it is not ideal for "pitch it and leave it" type fishing.

A good example of baitcast reel is the "Shimano Calais Baitcaster," priced at under $400. Finesse anglers will enjoy the solid feel and fluid handling of the compact low-profile baitcaster. It is made with ten stainless steel anti-rust bearings, flex-free aluminum frame and side-plates, and aluminum spool.

the best bamboo comes from china.
after WWII the japanese sold us an awful lot of very cheap stuff. toys, radios, fishing tackle, lots more.
for some reason, most of the older goods do have a collectors market EXCEPT for their fishing tackle. the only japanese fishing collectables are old bone jigs used for saltwater fishing. most of the fly-fishing gear was really crappy junk. same with all the old spinning reels.
when shimano came on the scene, quality started improving.
now, japanese gear is among the best. but l still don't hear much about their fly tackle. l guess it's still junk.

At one time a fishing rod was nothing more than a stick with a string dangling on the end with a piece of hooked shaped metal on the end of the string.

Boy, times have changed!

With modern day technology, fishing rods are a sophisticated piece of hunting equipment coming in sizes from two feet to twenty and are specialized for types of water as well as the kind of fish you are trying to catch. Line guides and a reel keep your fishing line neat and orderly so you do not tangle it up.

If you are looking for a casting rod, you want a longer stick as that gives you an advantage when tossing that lure into the brush.

Going after the big ones? You are surely looking for something that will handle the fight of a whopper and handle the shock when the fish strikes the bait.

Your choice of a grip is also something that is new to the fishing world as they are usually made of cork or a synthetic foam.

Spin casting rods are perfect where you spend your day casting and retrieving the bait or lure as there design is sleek and they are typically lightweight.

If you are fly fishing there are rods specifically made so you can put that lightweight fly right on the money.

For the larger fish and if you are going off shore, you want to grab a conventional spinning rod that is heavier as they are more suited to landing the larger fish and will handle the weight.

It does not matter what you like to reel in or how you like to spend your day on the water, just make sure that you spend the time picking out the right equipment from your local bait and tackle shop and if you are a rookie or just a casual angler, do not feel funny about buying a prepackaged kit for your adventures.

If you have a fairly long (7'+) light-action baitcasting rod, it might work reasonably well. If not, then you could try putting small split shot sinkers on the flies and fish them like a jig.

B.I assume your fishing a dry if you say let it sit, well with lots of gink to keep it afloat cast it and leave it as long as possible, the occasional twitch of the fly line can help, if its nymphs they must also be fished slow let them drift with the current and if needed bring them back with a slow figure of eight retrieve. If you see a fish rise, bring your fl back in and cast about four feet infront of it, this is when good casting is needed.
D.Casting can be hard but once mastered it can be very useful, you should be able to catch on a stocked lake with that kind of cast but a little more distance would be better, the only way to do that is to practice, also make sure your using a WF line and a medium to fast action rod

*C* you need a leader length of about 12 feet, this will stop the fish being spooked,a tapered leader will help to present your dry flies better

Fish one fly at a time, its better to fish one fly properly than three flies incorrectly. When your tapered leader becomes short add a length of tippet to increase its length, this can be fluorocarbon or copolymer, dont use fluorocarbon with dry flies as it will pull them under.

For more than twenty five years I've been using ultra light fishing tackle and have learned that fishing with ultralight gear is one of the most enjoyable ways to catch fish. When I use the term 'tackle' or 'gear' I'm referring specifically to the rod, reel, and line that are employed while fishing. When you downsize your rod, reel, and line, the baits and lures that you use will also become smaller, mostly out of necessity.

This type of fishing can be done for type of fish. In my opinion 'ultra light' fishing is simply matching your rod reel and line to the size of fish you intend to catch, then as your skills become better, it means catching fish larger than your gear and line would suggest. For example catching five to six pound trout or smallmouth bass while using a four foot ultra light rod and matching reel, spooled with four pound test. The same rule holds true when fishing for ten pound steelhead with a medium action rod and reel, spooled with eight pound test.

Fishing with light tackle also makes you become a better angler. It forces you to learn how to "play" your catch, rather than just winching your fish in. I'm not a fly fisherman, but one of the best quotes ever made came from the fly fishing movie A River Runs Through It. In this movie the reverend Mclean is said to have said, "Anyone who does not know how to catch a fish should be able to disgrace that fish by catching it."

To me this quote sums up ultra light fishing quite nicely. This type of fishing literally forces you to become a better angler and learn "how" to catch fish, rather than relying on some sort of luck from the fishing Gods. The bottom line is that if you use quality rods, reels, and line ultra light fishing will most certainly result in catching more fish. This is one of the keys to ultra light fishing tackle. You always want to purchase quality gear and line.

When fishing with ultra light gear that gear gets put to the test. The drag on your reel, for example, is of the utmost importance. This is why purchasing quality reels such as those made by Pflueger, is so important. How about fishing line? I've always been a fan of Stren monofilament, although any name brand manufacturer will work fine. Skimping on the cost of line is never a good idea when it comes to ultra light fishing tackle.

The same rule applies to your fishing rod. In many instances sub par quality ultra light rods have a very "whippy" quality to them. When you hold them in you hand and shake the rod tip, it feels almost as if you're holding some sort of whip. An ultra light rod should have some 'backbone' to it for quality hook sets. Although they are a bit expensive, St. Croix makes great light fishing rods that last a lifetime and perform wonderfully.

The bottom line is that light fishing tackle is the way to go if you want to catch more fish, have more fun, and become a better angler. Give it a try and find out for yourself just how enjoyable fishing with ultra light tackle can be.

If your using a wf 9wt line you cant modify it into a a taper, i also don't think there is any need for poly leaders on a 9wt outfit anyway. Scientific anglers steel head line is a good line for good turnovers anyway so all i would advise is a tapered mono filament leader and a good fluorocarbon tippet, if its a floating line there is no need for poly leaders, although they do have an advantage on intermediate and sinking lines. Don't do anything to the line and you will get some good distance casts out of it. If your getting better at casting use a DT line as this will increase your distance.
