A fishing rod is a tool utilized in sport fishing that consists of an extended pole with a line held in place at the side of it with the use of guides. Fishing the dry fly is at the top of the fly fisherman list of fun
fishing. The visual dry fly catch continues to attract many

Fly fishing is absolutely never complete without a fly fishing rod. A rod has several specifications and parts as well so before you decide on taking a splash for the fish you just canÂ’t wait to get your hook in to, be sure you have an idea what your rod is really made of.

First, although fly rods have different shapes and sizes; some are longer, heavier or more colorful than the others, the different parts of a rod doesnÂ’t change at all. The important part of the rod is referred to the rod blank. It is the central shaft of the rod and itÂ’s where everything, where the rest of the rod is attached. Rod blanks is also called the tip and then the heavy section is called the butt. Generally, blanks are made of graphite but there are still other materials that can be used.

Next is the reel seat. This is located at the butt of the rod. The purpose of this is for the fly reel; the rings found on this part are meant to lock the reel and the foot in place. The material used for reel seats can be either graphite or metal. Then we have the rod handle. This is located just right above the reel seat. The general rule of thumb is to clear any storm by at least 20 nautical miles from the edge of the precipitation returns (not the center of the storm). When clearing a storm from above, it's recommended to allow 1,000 feet for every 10 knots of wind aloft, i.e. if the winds are 60 knots, clear the storm top by 6,000 feet. Clear air turbulence is experienced far more often and it poses a problem because it cannot be detected - pilots must rely on the reports of other pilots. Often, the turbulence can extend in areas hundreds of miles long and at altitude ranges of tens of thousands of feet. There's often just no way to avoid it. Many injuries happen each year as a result of clear air turbulence. It's never because something on the airplane failed - it's always because people are walking around or aren't buckled up.

The ratio of the gears determines how many revolutions the spool makes when one revolution of the crank is made. And example would be a ratio or 4:1. This means that turning the crank once makes the spool turn four times. Having a lower ratio, such as 3:1 is advantageous for reeling in bigger fish as it provides more torque. The downside is that the process will be slower. For smaller fish a higher ratio can be used since less torque is needed. The upside is that you can reel the fish in faster.

Drag systems are what apply the pull on a hooked fish, but let the line out when the fish is fighting. This helps absorb the energy of the fish and prevent a broken line or dropped reel. The ball bearings in the reel help keep the action smooth, which aids in a very confident and consistent reeling motion.

Do you like fishing? Almost everyone likes fishing, unless you're a girl or a boy who did not matter. Fishing can be fun for anyone. I know that I love to fish as much as possible. Things like job security can cut the time we go fishing, but that's life.

In this article I will discuss salt water fishing rods and better for fishing in saltwater. I found I love saltwater fishing. I really wish I lived near the ocean, because I was going all the time. Fish are larger and tend to bite more often. I prefer the entry of fishing for me, so just for fun. There are miles and miles of dollars inlets to fishing on the shores of the ocean. Fish of all sizes come in these entries. You can see large mammals such as dolphins. They do not like too much and the ships that never came to a pet, but is simply unheard of in the freshwater fishing.

The water is calm for the most part, this means you can put in the pot of any size. Some people in the use of large coastal boats, but I was surprised to see how many people use boats you'll see some smaller lakes in the country. We used our 17-foot boat and John Evenrude engine 25 hp.

You can take your hawk out there and catch all the shrimp you want and then turn around and catch big fish with these shrimp. We have learned that they like to catch more of frozen shrimp you buy things that they eat or in kind.

The first thing most people learn in fly fishing is how to tie flies, but learning to set up your rod should really be the first step.

The very first thing you need to learn about setting up and using your fly fishing equipment is that there is always two ways to do everything involved with the sport. Well, maybe not always, sometime there are three or more ways to do it. Every fly fishing book you read will give you a slightly different take on the best way to do everything. This duality runs through the entire sport. There are two types of rods; there are two types of reel; there are two types of line, etc.

The key to rod selection and set up is the type of fishing that is going to be done. It would be great if there was a one rod fits all types of fishing situation here, but this is just not the case. The rod length might be around six feet for fishing small streams and up to fifteen feet when fishing salt water flats. The most recent trend in fly fishing rods is toward shorter and lighter rods as fishing in smaller bodies of water for different species has become popular. Still, you need to match the rod to the type of fishing you are planning or else expect to get several rods of different sizes.

The beginner is going to do best with a medium size rod. This will usually serve him for the first couple of years. He will be able to use it for both smaller and larger bodies of water and fish sizes. He will not have the best choice for either extreme, but will be safely in the middle no matter where he is fishing. As his own experience grows, he can select a rod more in line with his fishing interest.

When you are learning how to set up a fly fishing rod, give special attention to the line selection. Unlike casting rods, the line is more known for other attributes than just break strength. Quality line is essential. The big problem is what is called reel memory. The line must be played out fairly straight and natural to give the best presentation of the fly. Reel memory is where the line twists when played out due to being wound on the reel. Higher quality fly fishing line has virtually no reel memory.

The actual line is not attached directly to the spool as in casting reels. Rather it is attached to another section of line called the backing. Knowledge of knots is essential to preparing the fly rod. The Boy Scout merit badge illustrates this point as it requires that you demonstrate three different style knots. The backing is attached to the fly reel spool with an arbor backing knot. Then the backing is attached to the actual fly line with a nail knot. A short leader is attached to the end of the actual fly line with any one of three different knots. Finally, the fly itself most be attached to the leader.

this is kind of a stupid question but what is the difference in dry and wet flies for fly fishing i just started.

Dry flies float on top of the water and represent insects in the final stage of life when they are flying around and laying eggs on or around the water.

Wet flies can indicate the ealier stages of the flies, like the larva. When people say wet flies they can mean a couple different things, they can mean nymphs (early bug stage) or emergers (rising bug from bottom) or even streamers (large flies being pulled through current to represent smaller fish or leeches or crawfish or anything that swims underwater.)

Fly fishing has gained popularity in recent years as a recreational sport. The weight forward, double taper, and shooting are designed to help anglers cast further in different conditions. If you can't get the fly to the fish, you're going to have a low catch ratio. A lot of it has to due with personal preference. But a good caster can make any line do what they need.

Sink tips, full sinking, compensated sinking are all made to get the fly to the right depth. I don't know if you're ever seen a heavily weighted fly come within an inch of your cheek during a back cast, but it can be a little unnerving. A sinking line allows you to use a lighter weighted, neutral buoyancy, or even floating fly to get the presentation in front of a fish. Modern steelhead fly fishing has evolved by leaps and bounds because of the advent of new sink tip systems. Before a person would have to splice all there own lines together to get one that worked. Now you can walk into a store or order one online.

I don't think every company needs to manufacture 100 different lines for every certain condition. But some are definitely a benefit to anglers.

Here's a few tips to help you pick out a Surf Fishing Rod. Surf Rods are unique in their design characteristics to be used for fishing in surf. These tips will help you make an intelligent choice when selecting your first or next surf rod.

Design features to consider are:

• Rod Length
• Rod Taper
• Rated Rod Power
• Type, Quantity and Location of Rod Guides
• Reel Seats

Rod Length

Fishing the surf requires the ability to cast long distances using surf casting techniques. To be able to cast as far as possible surf rods are long. A good length for a surf rod is 10' to 12'. Rods that are shorter will sacrifice casting distance and rods that are longer will be more difficult to cast.

Rod Taper

Fishing rods are designed for different types of fishing. Some rods require a fast action and others a medium or slow action. This is accomplished through the design incorporated into the rod taper. Rods with a fast action will bend from the upper third of the rod length. A slow action design bends from the lower third. When a rod is designed for the surf it should have a medium action which bends from the upper middle half of the rod.

Rated Rod Power

The power rating of any fishing rod is refereed to as it's backbone. This is the fish fighting strength of the rod. Surf fish can be very powerful but you don't want a rod that has too much backbone because you will sacrifice casting distance. The best compromise is to choose a surf rod with a medium heavy power rating.

Rod Guides

Materials used for rod guides vary. Top quality rods will be fitted with silicon carbide guides. These are considered to be the best guides because they are very hard, resist wear and are very smooth which improves casting distance. The next best choice is ceramic guides. Ceramic guides are not as hard as silicon carbide but are still a good material for guides . There are a few different kinds of ceramic used for guides some are harder than others. It is not possible to determine the quality of the ceramic by inspection. Don't be too concerned about the quality of the ceramic when choosing a surf rod.

Besides the guide material consider the quantity of guides. Generally speaking more guides are desirable because they spread the load over the length of the rod more uniformly. Since a surf rod design bends from the upper third the number of guides and spacing  along that section are important. Bend the rod at the tip to see the arc it makes under a load. Pay attention to the shape of the arc and the location of the guides. The guides should be located at the transition points of the arc.

Due to stress on the main line when casting surf casters use a shock leader tied to the main line. The rod guides can hinder the casting distance if they are not large enough to allow the shock leader knot to pass through during the cast. Make sure that the guides at the tip of the rod are not too restrictive.

Reel Seats

The final component of a surf rod that I want to cover is the reel seats. Reels seats are made from different metal alloys or graphite. The surf environment is very corrosive. Reel seats should be made from a non corrosive metal such as stainless steel or other rust proof alloy. Graphite reel seats are not recommended for surf rods.
