Our series of articles on Freshwater Fishing Tackle continues as we attempt to remove the fright of purchasing fishing gear from the novice angler.

I personally had to do it the difficult way, I bought tackle that seemed good but was completely incorrect for the chore at hand. With the many reels and rods on the market, not to mention the billions of jigs, hooks, sinkers, line types and other fishing accessories; how could a beginner not make a few inappropriate and expensive wrong decisions?

We started our series on freshwater fishing tackle with the reel; including the spincast and spinning reels. Now we will cover the Ferrari of the fishing domain the Baitcast Reel; also referred to as Baitcaster, baitcasting, casting reel, and a conventional reel.

Baitcast reels can handle larger lines and permits longer casts than spinning reels in the comparable size range. Fishermen frequently use line in the 14- to 17-pound-test range.

The design of the baitcaster allows for precision casting to get the lure precisely where you desire it. They use very tough drag mechanisms to slow larger, stronger fish and are intended to be used with bigger lures.

The baitcast reel is the favorite reel for getting Striped Bass, Bream, Steelhead and more. Because of its casting accuracy it is great for fishing in water where snags can be a trouble or for casting below spans and walkways with limited head room.

Baitcast reels have a rotating spool with the line spooled the same way as the line as it runs down the fishing rod. They have a center pin and the disks are joined by a series of outer pins that exposes the line. Some are built partially from composites, but most are still stainless steel, often with brass pieces in certain areas. The baitcast reel attaches on top of the fishing rod.

Because of it's above the rod mounting the baitcast reel is more troublesome to cast and has a much greater learning curve than either the spincast or spinning reels. For this reason it is not a effective entry level reel for kids or the starting angler.

Also its steeper cost makes it cost prohibitive for the casual weekend fisherman who will only fish from time to time. Lastly since it is principally a cast reel it is not ideal for "pitch it and leave it" type fishing.

A good example of baitcast reel is the "Shimano Calais Baitcaster," priced at under $400. Finesse anglers will enjoy the solid feel and fluid handling of the compact low-profile baitcaster. It is made with ten stainless steel anti-rust bearings, flex-free aluminum frame and side-plates, and aluminum spool.

Selecting the first fly-fishing outfit is the most difficult step once you have decided to participate in fly-fishing. Five essential items make up a fishing outfit. They are the line, rod, leader, reel and the fly. It is essential that each item of the outfit works in an efficient manner and is comfortable for your use. When all these items work together efficiently, the outfit is considered as balanced. Success in fly-fishing depends on the outfit, and therefore it is important to select the right outfit suitable for you. Some basic tips on how to select each of these items is given below:

1. The fly fishing line:

The first item to select is the line. This is because the line weight is the important factor. There are many different types of lines available and it is essential to choose the right one. The line weight designation in the code should match the one on the rod, which will be used. Beginners in fly-fishing can select the double tapered line, which is most commonly used. The various types of lines include weight forward, level line, tapered line and shooting taper. The floating function should be chosen for your first line. A floating line would be suited to your needs for fly-fishing. The line weight would depend on where you will be going to fish.

2. Fly fishing rod:

The three key things to consider while choosing the fly fishing rod are its length, its action and the material it is made up of. Fly-fishing rods are usually made from bamboo, fiberglass, baron or graphite. Fiberglass is the cheapest material used for fishing rods, but it is not convenient in terms of diameter and weight. Bamboo or cane rods are usually handcrafted works of art and are very expensive. These require a lot of care compared to synthetic fly fishing rods. Graphite fly-fishing rods are lightweight and durable and enable the angler to perform any action easily. Therefore, these are the most popular fly fishing rods. Baron fishing rods are the most expensive among the synthetic rods.

3. The fly fishing Reel:

There are 3 types of fishing reels: single action, automatic and multiplier. The most basic of the three is the single action fly reel, which should be selected for a first fly-fishing outfit. Multiplier and automatic fishing reel are not practical for a beginner.

4. Fly leader:

The fly leader is a tiny portion of monofilament line used to fasten the end of the fly line to the fly. The power generated at the time of the cast must be transferred from the end of the fly line to the fly, therefore the correct leader must be chosen. Factors playing a role in the selection of a fly leader are whether the fly leader should be straight or tapered, whether it should be knotless or knotted. The tippet size and the weight of the lead should also be considered.

5. Fishing Fly:

Choosing the fly for your fly fishing outfit depends on factors like the kind of fish you will be targeting and where you will be fishing. It is also a matter of personal preference.

Can I fly fish with a regular rod?

I have the fly fishing reel, but just a regular bait casting rod. Can i use both of them together to fly fish?

If you have a fairly long (7'+) light-action baitcasting rod, it might work reasonably well. If not, then you could try putting small split shot sinkers on the flies and fish them like a jig.

Freshwater Fly
Fly Fishing Questions... Please help me out!?

A.) How should I tie the knot to the fly? I did it the way I tie my knots to my lures when freshwater fishing, but it makes the fly sit on its side or upside down. (Which I imagine wont be attractive to the fish.)

A half blood knot is what i always use to attach my flies, but this can work(its good for fluorocarbon line too)

B.I assume your fishing a dry if you say let it sit, well with lots of gink to keep it afloat cast it and leave it as long as possible, the occasional twitch of the fly line can help, if its nymphs they must also be fished slow let them drift with the current and if needed bring them back with a slow figure of eight retrieve. If you see a fish rise, bring your fl back in and cast about four feet infront of it, this is when good casting is needed.
D.Casting can be hard but once mastered it can be very useful, you should be able to catch on a stocked lake with that kind of cast but a little more distance would be better, the only way to do that is to practice, also make sure your using a WF line and a medium to fast action rod

*C* you need a leader length of about 12 feet, this will stop the fish being spooked,a tapered leader will help to present your dry flies better

Fish one fly at a time, its better to fish one fly properly than three flies incorrectly. When your tapered leader becomes short add a length of tippet to increase its length, this can be fluorocarbon or copolymer, dont use fluorocarbon with dry flies as it will pull them under.

The general rule of thumb is to clear any storm by at least 20 nautical miles from the edge of the precipitation returns (not the center of the storm). When clearing a storm from above, it's recommended to allow 1,000 feet for every 10 knots of wind aloft, i.e. if the winds are 60 knots, clear the storm top by 6,000 feet. These distances are never (or should never be) sacrificed for the sake of saving time.

The even trickier turbulence is clear air turbulence. Turbulence doesn't always come from storm cells. Clear air turbulence is experienced far more often and it poses a problem because it cannot be detected - pilots must rely on the reports of other pilots. Often, the turbulence can extend in areas hundreds of miles long and at altitude ranges of tens of thousands of feet. There's often just no way to avoid it. Many injuries happen each year as a result of clear air turbulence. It's never because something on the airplane failed - it's always because people are walking around or aren't buckled up.

To directly answer your question, no, airlines shouldn't fly into known turbulence like that just for economic reasons. Some pilots may feel the pressure to take shortcuts, but all training warns against those mental traps and it goes against just about any company's policies.

The downside is that the process will be slower. For smaller fish a higher ratio can be used since less torque is needed. The upside is that you can reel the fish in faster.

Drag systems are what apply the pull on a hooked fish, but let the line out when the fish is fighting. This helps absorb the energy of the fish and prevent a broken line or dropped reel. I just bought some scientific angler fly line. I was wondering if i should put it one now or like in may when i actually go fishing? I just wanna know if i should keep it in the box until May or will it matter?

As the weather begins to warm up and fishing season approaches, it's time for every angler to start getting their gear organized. One of the things that should be done every year is to clean your fishing reels. If you take the hour or so to clean your fishing reel before the start of the fishing season, it will add year's to the life of the reel. I've got fishing reels that I paid less than $50 for and are over ten years old and still work like new. Why is that? Because I take care of them and take the little bit of time it actually takes to clean and grease them every year. Cleaning a fishing reel is very simple, here's a list of what you need :

1 Small Phillips Head Screwdriver
2 or 3 clean towels
5 or 6 Q-tips
Some Paper Towels
WD-40 or a small tube of Reel Grease

Begin by removing the fishing reel from the fishing rod. Now find a nice clean area to work, such as the kitchen table and lay out 2 of the clean towels. One of the towels is to work on and the other is to place parts so they don't get misplaced. The first thing that must be removed is the handle of the reel. It will either be held on by a screw that you unscrew with your fingers or you simply turn the handle counterclockwise and back it out. Once removed, place the handle and screw that held it in (if there is one) on the second clean towel.

At this point, take the third clean towel and some warm water and wipe the entire reel off well. If you're using WD-40, you can spray a bit on the outside of the reel before wiping. We simply want to clean the reel and remove any debris that might be present. Now turn the reel onto the side that the screws are visible. There are normally four small Phillips head screws. Simply remove the screws and place them on the clean towel so you know where they are. Once the screws are removed you should notice how the screws were holding the reel together. Simply remove the plate and place it on the clean towel as well.

Now the inner workings of the reel are exposed. You should notice a couple of gears and such. At this point you want to use a couple of your Q-tips to remove any sand, dirt, or debris that can be seen. Once that's done, you want to grease the gears in the reel. Just add a couple of drops to each moving gear. If you're using wd-40, simply spray a small amount on each gear. Now simply reverse the process.

With your fishing reel back together, you're done! It's that simple to clean your spinning reel. It should work as well as it ever has after being cleaned, and will work like that for the entire fishing season. As I said, if you do this before every fishing season, your fishing reels will last for years. If your fishing reel was acting up before cleaning and continues to not work properly after cleaning, it may be time to think about getting a new one. On many occasions, just giving them a good cleaning solves many fishing reel problems.
