What are the 4 must have flies in fly fishing for trout?

im a beginer fly fisherman and i love all kinds of fishing. i think i know the 4 top patterns for each type of flys ( dry flies, wet flys, nymphs, and streamers) but i would like to know what other people think. please send links and please i would like to see alot of personal favorite patterns.

I'm from Montana and tied professionally a million years ago when I was in high school. My pick Royal Wulff, Royal Humpy, Elk Hair Caddis, and any hopper pattern for dry flies. For wets, all you really need is an Emergent Sparkle Pupa. Nymphs: Hare's Ear, Prince, Pheasant Tail, and all three in bead head (I get extras here because I was short on the wets). Streamers: Wooly Bugger, Muddler Minnow, Muddler Marabou White and Black.

The most fun I've had is dragging a Yellow Marabou Muddler across the top of really high muddy water. The browns would come right of the bottom and smash it like you've never seen. Some would come two feet out of the water after it.

Fly Fishing Reels
I mixed up by so many Fishing Reels.Help!?

I heared so many fishing reels like spincast reel,spinning reel,surfcasting reel,jigging reel,big game reel/trolling reel,fly reel,baitcaster reel.What are the difference?I really wanna know the difference of the Jigging Reel and the Trolling Reel,baitcaster reel and the trolling reel.Does surfcasting reel the same with the spinning reel?I think the same reel with different fishing lures for different types of fishing,it will have different names,am I right?
Could someone list me all the lures,different lures for different fishing types?

These are your basic fishing reels:

Spinning reels or some times called open faced reels - a good all around reel. The correct size will handle most fish.

Spin cast reels or some times called closed faced reels - usually not as well built as spinning reels. A good choice for lite duty fishing like panfish. Most kids learn to cast with these reels because of ease of use.

Bait cast reels - designed to cast 3/8 oz. lures or heavier. A little harder to use but once mastered you can cast further and more accurate. A favorite of Pro bass fisherman.

Trolling reels - any reel can be used for trolling , often refered to as a level wind reel {similar to a bait cast reel} these reels can have a line counter on them which counts the amount of feet you have out.

Surf reels - can be either spinning or casting reels, the size to match the species you are fishing for.

Fly reels - a special reel to hold your fly line, different sizes or weight # to match you fly rods, these reels are made with and with out a drag.

what is the best way to catch trout but without fly fishing?

cappie minnows, fatheads, and nightcrawlers are the best live bait. Use small #8 0r #10 hooks(smaller if possible) and the lightest line you can get away with. You do not use a bobber or a float. If there is no current, or a light one, you do not need split shot or sinkers. Just let the bait float and drift to the bottom naturally, moving it slightly every few minutes as needed. In areas with heavier current, you need to add the appropriate amount of weight to keep the bait in the fishes strike zone.
When fishing trout, you always want to fish upstream (face into the current) this way, on the retrieve, you bring the bait back with the current which is a more natural presentation. trout like to hold in dead spots in the middle of fast moving water.Look for rocks in deep current and cast past them. Allow your bait to drift past the rock and try to delay it in the dead spot in the current that the rock, or other obstruction creates. When using nightcrawlers or worms I like to cast on top of the rock and slowly pull the bait off of it, slipping the worm into the water slowly on the side of the rock facing me. Also look for deep pools and runs. If the banks are undercut by the current these can be golden spots to drift live bait through. Remember, trout always face upstream(against the current) so try to do the same. This way you will stay behind them so they don't see you, they also won't become spooked by the debris you have disturbed floating past them.
Spinners and spoons are also great means of catching trout. Panther Martins, Mepps, and Rooster tails are popular choices and work well. Sizes #0 thru #2. Smaller is generally better when trout fishing, but certainly not always the case. If the water is muddy or murky, use copper colored spinners. On cloudy days use gold, and on bright sunny days use silver(any color can work any day, but this is the guideline) When spinner fishing from shore, if you cannot fish with the current, try to quarter it. Reel just fast enough to keep the blade spinning, as close to the bottom as possible. Small rapalas and other crank baits can work well also. There is a whole mess of literature on trout fishing, go to you're local bookstore and see what you can find.

This article will focus on the best trout fishing lures and baits. I have fished for trout nearly all my life and got started by fishing in small streams and creeks in Pennsylvania. The water was clear and cold. The woods were strikingly beautiful. But you want to hear about the best lures and baits, don't you?

First off, there are nightcrawlers and red worms, which are a smaller worm that are better for smaller trout. It is vital to hook these worms correctly, looping the hook through the body multiple times, or using a rig with two hooks. Worms don't keep very well, so they may die somewhere throughout your fishing expedition. However, they are very reliable and steadfast, and you will pretty much always be able to catch trout on worms as long as the trout are there.

There are also other live or semi-live baits, such as salmon eggs. Salmon eggs are by far my favorite trout bait for smaller sized trout. You must use a very small hook, tie on a salmon egg and let it drift downstream. Hopefully a trout gobbles it up, you reel him in, and then later that night you gobble him up. Minnows are like salmon eggs for larger trout. It can be difficult to catch trout who have survived in the wild for several years using artificial baits - they are very suspicious. For these larger trout smaller minnows, preferably of a species that live in the creek you're fishing in, are the best.

Small spinning lures and jigs can work well, depending on the conditions. Small spinning lures are by far the best lure for catching trout (well, besides flies, but we'll get to that in a bit). These in-line spinning lures work best when the trout aren't hungry or are lazy, in this way you can agitate a fish into biting the lure when they aren't attacking natural baits. Jigs tend to work best with a slow presentation, and in the colder months.

Fly fishing is another method of trout fishing entirely. The line is weighted to allow you to cast, because you have to use a very small lure. The lure itself is called a fly, which is essentially a hook with small feathers, colored strings, and other things tied onto it in order to make it emulate a natural insect. When you cast out the fly, it drifts across the surface as it is carried downstream, looking a lot like an insect to trout beneath the surface. This is a very effective method of trout fishing, and the one preferred by many. You can even make your own flies, a delicate process known as fly tying!

There are also some artificially created pastes, nuggets and gobs that are sold for the purpose of trout fishing. Some of these work and some of them don't, however I wouldn't recommend using them unless you plan on eating the trout, as they often get swallowed immediately. Releasing the fish with a swallowed hook is a bad thing to do, as the fish will die within days. The trout seem to like the taste of this powerful bait, and I have used it from time to time, however the cost can be a bit prohibitive. That being said, they do work well, so I won't speak ill of them.

That's about it, for all of the best trout fishing lures. Of course we're talking about small to medium sized freshwater trout - not huge lunker lake trout or ocean species of trout. You'll have to check out some future article to find out what I use for those.

The purpose of any fly fisherman is having the right to attract fish to strike. Trout are notoriously selective when it comes to feeding your instinctive self-protection. But the same size and model for each situation is cumbersome and expensive. So to attract trout, I suggest you make fly fishing lures you in following the water. An Elk Hair Caddis, size 18 (# 18) is number one on the list. Caddis hatches are prolific throughout the country and this fly, it is easy to see, go trout fishing. Caddis fly a standard, often called cinnamon or Brown should be back up # 20, in the case of small Caddis hatch.

First, the banners, I think you only need two fish and the Woolly Bugger, Muddler. Again, if the fish are not nymphs they must use their natural instinct to find a meal that is leaking. Let two banners I drift a little sooner than let it swing in the area could supply. Strikes are hard and fast. You can also take off one of the banners around the feeding area. okay. start with plastic worms. get an assortment. sizes/colors.
add to this some soft plastic topwaters. rage tail shad and toads by strike king. 5/0 or 6/0 extra wide gap offset hook.
a few spinner/buzz baits. different blade styles and different colors but mostly white/chartreuse. be sure to have a couple colorado blades in the mix.
l like (love) rico poppers by lobina lures but they're just so damn expensive. l wade into the lake to retrieve hung ones and there is no body contact allowed.
rebel pop-rs and zara spooks by heddon round out what l use most.
l don't use many crankbaits. sorry, you're on your own. just match them to the shad or whatever your local forage is.

downsize these for smallmouth.
don't forget the float 'n' fly combo for them though. and the regular assortment of smallmouth jigs.

There are many factors that will determine the best way to fish for big Walleye.

Let's start with fishing the early part of spring, which will find the walleye getting themselves right up next to the shore near sandy areas and sand bars, rocky points and weeded areas that have sandy bottoms nearby.

During the spring months, the smaller sized male walleye tend to stay close to the shore, but the bigger female walleye look for a bit deeper waters.

Spawning walleye are aggressive and ready to bite just about anything, and they will spawn in current, so these areas are usually key to walleye fishing success in the early spring months.

Walleye fishing lures to use, try jigs, use about 1/4 or 1/8 ounce jigs with black, green, yellow, or white twister tails. If you are looking for one all purpose twister tail, choose white, I find it will work for you through out the year.

Fishing for trophy sized walleye is best done at night. Troll slowly right next to shore, especially where there are weedy areas with sandy bottoms. Trolling with spinners (night crawler harnesses) is probably the most productive way to catch walleye.

Trolling with crank baits, fishing jigs, and slip bobbers will all catch fish, but nothing beats harnesses. On natural lakes, troll the weed edges and break lines. I like to use mainly leeches. Mr Twisters in White or Black near the bottom. Erie Dearies with a large night crawler (worm).

In the summer and fall I like to use bigger baits or lures. Small ones in the spring. Using White Twister tails is one of the best, but in the spring the Walleyes are more aggressive and will hit colors like chartreuse, pink, yellow or orange.

These colors only work in the spring because the Walleyes are hitting them to defend their spawning grounds and not for feeding.

You can also add a leach, worm, minnow or Walleye gullet to the jig to get more action but it's usually not needed. Also try fishing on the bottom from one hour before dark until after dark. This will help produce results.

Whats the best fishing lure to use when catching bass in the middle of the day?

I know its hard to catch bass in the middle of the day, but its possible. What do you think is the best lure to use when the fish are in the middle of a lake?

The middle of the day or even the heat of the summer does not necessarily mean the fish are in the middle of the lake. They are also around the base of the cypress trees, usually on the shady side, and are off the points in a little deeper water then earlier in the day . Lilly pads are also good middle of the day spots to fish. Sometimes in the middle of the day you can find schools of bass feeding on threadfin shad on the surface of the water. You lure choice would be determined where you are fishing at. For instance the point would be a good crankbait spot, or a weighted lizard or worm. The cypress trees would produce fish using a weighted lizard or worm, or crankbait, or spinner bait. The schooling bass could be caught on buzz baits, crankbaits or the plastics. Even top water will produce fish when a school is found. If one type of structure or area fails to produce fish, go to the next area and try it out.There are some days when the middle of the day has produced my best catches.Just go, have fun, and good luck!

In this article I'm going to outline how to use a trout fishing lure. A trout fishing lure could be a rooster tail or any small spinner, a small spoon, small minnow imitation, or any other small lure used for trout fishing. From my more than 25 years of trout fishing experience, I've noticed some things that really cost people bites. In this article I'll explain some of those mistakes and how to avoid them.

The first thing to keep in mind when trout fishing is that trout have very keen eyesight and tend to live in cold clear water, therefore very light fishing line should be employed. Many anglers use fishing line that's much too heavy when fishing for trout. This is a huge mistake. Not only can line that's too heavy effect the action of the trout lure itself, if the trout can see your line you will get many fewer bites. I personally use and suggest using four pound test or lighter, but six pound test line is also passable.

The net step in learning how to use a trout fishing lure is to never use snap swivels. You know those swivels that simply snap apart for easy access? Do not use snap swivels to attach your trout fishing lure to your line. As a matter of fact, if you have any snap swivels for any type of fishing, throw them away. Nothing will ruin the action of a fishing lure like our friend the snap swivel. Either tie your lure directly to your line or use a barrel swivel with a twelve to eighteen inch 'leader' (piece of line). Incidentally this is the best way to rig a trout fishing lure. Take the end of your line and snip off a 12-18 inch leader and set it aside. Now tie a small barrel swivel (size 10 to 12) to the end of your line. Now take your leader and tie it to the opposite end of the barrel swivel. Now, tie your trout fishing lure to the leader. This is how to rig your trout fishing lure.

Now for how to use the trout fishing lure that you just rigged up. For the most part you don't want to simply cast your trout fishing lure out and reel it back in. The goal is to make your lure appear injured or otherwise different than any actual prey that swims in the water that you're fishing. A good trick is to "snap" your rod tip as you.re reeling your trout fishing lure in. In other words, make your trout fishing lure look as much as you can like wounded prey.

Varying the speed of your retrieve is a good idea as well. I'm referring to varying your speed within each individual retrieve. Many times if a trout is following your lure, and that lure suddenly speeds up (as if it's "trying to get away"), many times the trout will strike. It's never a bad idea to make sure that you're fishing when the trout are the most active as well. This can make a huge difference in bite rates and can be as important as which trout fishing lure you choose to employ.

Another tip is to allow your trout lure time to sink before reeling it in. Many times the closer to the bottom the lure is, the more success you will have. Trout tend to hang out near the bottom, especially in river and stream situations. As any "flea flicker" will tell you, this isn't at all true when a hatch is going off, but that's neither here nor there. In any case what was just described is how to use a trout fishing lure.

For more than twenty five years I've been using ultra light fishing tackle and have learned that fishing with ultralight gear is one of the most enjoyable ways to catch fish. When I use the term 'tackle' or 'gear' I'm referring specifically to the rod, reel, and line that are employed while fishing. When you downsize your rod, reel, and line, the baits and lures that you use will also become smaller, mostly out of necessity.

This type of fishing can be done for type of fish. In my opinion 'ultra light' fishing is simply matching your rod reel and line to the size of fish you intend to catch, then as your skills become better, it means catching fish larger than your gear and line would suggest. For example catching five to six pound trout or smallmouth bass while using a four foot ultra light rod and matching reel, spooled with four pound test. The same rule holds true when fishing for ten pound steelhead with a medium action rod and reel, spooled with eight pound test.

Fishing with light tackle also makes you become a better angler. It forces you to learn how to "play" your catch, rather than just winching your fish in. I'm not a fly fisherman, but one of the best quotes ever made came from the fly fishing movie A River Runs Through It. In this movie the reverend Mclean is said to have said, "Anyone who does not know how to catch a fish should be able to disgrace that fish by catching it."

To me this quote sums up ultra light fishing quite nicely. This type of fishing literally forces you to become a better angler and learn "how" to catch fish, rather than relying on some sort of luck from the fishing Gods. The bottom line is that if you use quality rods, reels, and line ultra light fishing will most certainly result in catching more fish. This is one of the keys to ultra light fishing tackle. You always want to purchase quality gear and line.

When fishing with ultra light gear that gear gets put to the test. The drag on your reel, for example, is of the utmost importance. This is why purchasing quality reels such as those made by Pflueger, is so important. How about fishing line? I've always been a fan of Stren monofilament, although any name brand manufacturer will work fine. Skimping on the cost of line is never a good idea when it comes to ultra light fishing tackle.

The same rule applies to your fishing rod. In many instances sub par quality ultra light rods have a very "whippy" quality to them. When you hold them in you hand and shake the rod tip, it feels almost as if you're holding some sort of whip. An ultra light rod should have some 'backbone' to it for quality hook sets. Although they are a bit expensive, St. Croix makes great light fishing rods that last a lifetime and perform wonderfully.

The bottom line is that light fishing tackle is the way to go if you want to catch more fish, have more fun, and become a better angler. Give it a try and find out for yourself just how enjoyable fishing with ultra light tackle can be.
