Fly Fishing Flies

Fly fishing is a challenging and fun activity for many fly fishermen. The challenge is to catch different species of fish. Yet, even catching a fish in fly fishing is already a challenge because it is never easy to master fly fishing. Fly fishing success has many factors. One factor the right choice of lures of fly fishing flies. These are used to imitate insects to lure fish and catch them eventually. The lures or flies may either be surface lures of below the surface lures. Common lures are the surface lures and these types of lures can catch big fishes such as the bass.

Bass fly fishing are now being done in fly fishing tournaments. The challenge is to catch many bass or to catch a bass fast. Most fly fishermen practice hard to master the perfect casting in order to create some commotion that will imitate surface animals to attract the bass. Catching bass in fly fishing is a challenge especially on strong fights on the water (bass are big and they put up a fight when they are catched). Bass are keen in waiting to pounce on their prey just as fly fishermen are keen on waiting for their fish.

The bass are easily attracted to surface flies especially if has distinct color. Most fly fishermen make their own lures when they want to catch bass. Bass fly fishing is dependent on the type of lure being used. The key to bass fly fishing success is on attracting the bass to the lures. This can be done by using dark colors such as brown, black or purple when it the horizon is dimming. Bass fly fishing is usually done when the sun begins to set because this is the time when they start to look for food because surface insects are available. Bass lures or flies can also be made using lighter colors because bass will pounce on any insect. There are insect that have light colors and making a bright colored lure or flies will surely attract the bass. Bass are after big insects but there are occasions that they are up for smaller insects which makes small flies feasible for catching bass.

Aside from the color of the flies, the movement is also a strategy to master when wanting to catch a bass. Each fly fisherman has their techniques in moving their bass bugs. They may cast it on the water without making it move on the surface for a few minutes then give it a slight twitch or movement to make bass think that it is a live insect. Bass are just waiting to pounce on their prey and it can be fun to lure them into some non-living flies and catch them easily. Bass fly fishing might seem easy but it is much more complicated when being studied.

what fish would eat these flys?

hi i live in new york and i have a house in Pennsylvania . i just started fly fishing.... and im wondering what fish would eat each of these flys... these are my top flys
irresistible adams.
dark brow elk hair caddis dry
green drake
black ant
red quill
wolly bugger

Any fish that feeds on the surface will hit those flies if the conditions are right. So, assuming you're fishing lakes and streams, trout (of all varieties), bass, panfish, and perch will take the surface flies you've included here.

The only one that "doesn't belong" with the others is the Woolly Bugger, which is a subsurface fly that imitates baitfish, sculpin, crawfish, or other underwater forage. But again, most any fish you can think of will take a Woolly Bugger if you present it properly to a feeding fish.

Irresistible Adams -- This imitates a mayfly or similar aquatic insect. It rides high on the water and is great for moderate to fast water. The game fish I've mentioned above will take mayflies from the surface during hatches.

Elk Hair Caddis -- Imitates an adult caddisfly (basically an aquatic moth), and can also be used to imitate terrestrial insects such as hoppers, moths, and butterflies.

Green Drake -- This fly imitates the big, ugly aquatic insect of the same name. They look kinda like a mayfly that has taken too many body building supplements. They emerge in waves and get enthusiastically eaten by feeding fish.

Black Ant -- This is just what it sounds like -- it imitates an ant that has fallen in the water. Not really a go-to fly like the Adams, but if you're fishing an area where terrestrials get blown or knocked into the water, it can be useful.

Red Quill -- This imitates a particular kind of mayfly that has tan wings and a ruddy-colored body. While you could use it as a generic mayfly, you'll probably want to use it during red quill hatches, which I believe take place in spring.

The purpose of any fly fisherman is having the right to attract fish to strike. Trout are notoriously selective when it comes to feeding your instinctive self-protection. But the same size and model for each situation is cumbersome and expensive. So to attract trout, I suggest you make fly fishing lures you in following the water. An Elk Hair Caddis, size 18 (# 18) is number one on the list. Caddis hatches are prolific throughout the country and this fly, it is easy to see, go trout fishing. When it comes to fly fishing in Idaho, vacations spent on the South Fork of the Snake River definitely top the list. The river starts in Yellowstone National Park and flows straight to the Palisades Reservoir via Grand Teton National Park. The South Fork is the portion of the Snake River that runs between the Palisades Dam and Henry's Fork. This is the perfect combination of big fish, great scenery, and nearby Jackson Hole lodging.

The Best Time For South Fork Fly Fishing

Fly fishing in the area begins from the last week of June to the first week of July with the appearance of the Salmon flies, Yellow Sallies, and Golden Stones. Late autumn is the favorite time to fish for many of the local fisherman since water levels are considerably lower than in the spring.

This gives anglers the chance to wade in new areas from Yellowstone National Park to Henry's Fork. The fish are ready to put up a good fight by this part of the season. In the winter, there is some shore fishing, but actually wading in the cold river isn't recommended. You will want to check the local fishing regulations to learn which portions of the river are closed.

All is not lost on the days the fish simply aren't biting. Bringing a spinning rod and reel along with a good lure will almost guarantee a successful fishing trip. The quiet days are also the perfect opportunity to get away from your Jackson Hole lodging and enjoy some of the wildlife travelling through the area. Moose, elk, and eagles are just some of the animals that peek out from the forest.

Gear Tips For South Fork Fly Fishing

Since many of the brown trout in the river weigh over ten pounds, stick to a four to five weight rod in the beginning of the South Fork fly fishing season. Tackle, on the other hand, should depend on what you see along the shoreline. Early in the season, use Salmon fly patterns such as Birds Stone and Hairy Mary on a size 4-8 hook. Nymphs such as Girdle Bugs, Stonefly Nymphs, and Black Rubberlegs can also provide you with an afternoon of aggressive fish. Fly patterns such as South Fork Sallies and Yellow Stimulators imitate the Yellow Sallies that appear at this time as well.

The later part of July and early August bring mayflys and Pale Morning Duns begin to appear. Use size 14 in July and slowly move to an 18 hook by the end of September. Try patterns such as Pink Cahill Parachute, Biot Dun, and Wooly Buggers. This is also a great time to break out the caddis like Elk Hair and Hemingway patterns. When it comes to fishing in the late fall (from August to October) think hoppers, Blue-winged Olives, and Royal Wulff in sizes ranging from 18-20.

South Fork fly fishing is some of the best in North America. The river is close to Jackson Hole lodging, Yellowstone National Park, and has plenty of large cutthroat, brown, and rainbow trout. For year-round fishing adventures, this is definitely the place to go.

what is a tippet. i got a starter kit and am getting new leader. is it necessary to buy one and also what kind of leader.
10 points for the answer.

tippet is just fishing line that is rated to match fly fishing standards (it is usually more flexible than most fishing line though). basically other types of fishing rate line in lbs of strength, in fly fishing tippet and leader are rated on line diameter. the diameter is assigned a number followed by the letter X, for example .007" diameter line is 4x and narrower .006" is 5x. the line strength can vary between brands and material types (mono, fluorocarbon, blends). your tippet should be lighter or the same as your leader, so if your have a 5x leader your tippet should be no less than 5x (your could use 5x,6x,7x ect).

tippet is used to lengthen your leader as it gets shorter, every time you change flys your leader gets shorter (I usually add tippet after I lose about 12" of leader) and to tie on droppers (a second fly tied to the first, more common when fishing wet flys like streamers and nymphs).

you don't really need tippet at first, you have enough to work on as it is. you will eventually need it but while your starting out you can just use more leaders as you likely be snapping them in your back cast and catching bushes while your learning anyway (the bush thing happens to all of us, doesn't matter how long you've been doing it, less often with experience but still happens especially when fish like to hang next to banks). and I wouldn't recommend trying to cast more than one bug until you get the hang of things. of course if you want to just jump right it in go for it, really only adds a couple of more knots to learn and does extend the life of your leader.

you'll need tapered leaders (don't worry its by far the most common type out there, and just so you know they are rated off the small end where you tie the fly on) the particular rating you'll need will depend on what fish your after and what weight your rod and line are. your starter kit is likely to be a 6 weight or 5 weight so you'll need a leader somewhere between 3x(strongest)-6x(weakest) at this point a 7 1/2' leader will be a little easier to cast but 9' or 10' leaders will last longer, its up to you but at this point expect to use a lot of leaders, at least a couple a week (as you gain experience they'll last longer, fishing 20-30 hours a week I use about 1 a month). I'd recommend a 9ft 4x leader.

at this point brand doesn't matter just get something cheap, as you figure out what your doing you'll get a better idea of what you need.

if your fly line doesn't have a permanent loop I'd recommend putting one on, they are cheap and make it much easier to put a leader on. many leaders already have a loop for the loop to loop connection some don't but loops are pretty easy to tie.

The river in southern Missouri is one of the most pristine and beautiful country. Winding through some of the most beautiful hills and valleys of the Ozarks has to offer attractive pastoral is evident. The river flows entirely through the Ozark National Park Scenic waterways, leading to the development of riverbeds limited access and the public good. It is a flow float most popular fish in the country.

And no wonder. COLD RIVER, clear water habitat is perfect for rainbow and brown trout. In fact, the river seems tailor-made for trout fishing. Settlers rushed understood and regular supply began in 1900. Although the habitat looks perfect, the trout have not been able reproduce well. Recently, with the new regulations, rather large population of rainbow trout in wild-born, but must still be provided to meet at the fisherman. Brown trout can not reproduce at all in the river, even if they are heavily dependent. The constant temperature water spring water allows the fish to keep healthy and active all year round, even in the heat of summer.

The river has several powerful Springs State Park in Montauk. Rules here allow the harvest of trout, and there is a 18 "minimum. Lures and flies only allowed. Statewide trout regulations are in force, and no bait restrictions. Cafes are not stored at that location downstream, but many migrate upstream. Consequently, many more big brown river came to this area.

The area of White Ribbon can be divided into two distinct sections. The first section ISS 5 miles from Cedar Welch Spring Grove. The river here is relatively slow and shallow, and can get warm in summer. Temperatures on the site occasionally mid 70s. In general, trout are kept in spring and autumn. Some have more trout from year to year, but most fish are fresh from the incubator.

The situation changes drastically below the mouth of Welch Spring, 3 miles to Akers Ferry. Welch Spring is a major source of cold water and kept this part of the river never reach 70 degrees Celsius. For this reason, fish are stocked during the summer. Much more than trout, and some Real trophies are available here. While Akers Ferry, smallmouth bass begin to predominate, and the river becomes the country's best smallmouth streams below the spring round.

The fishing techniques in this are many and varied. This is a surprisingly good fishing fly dry. Trico is "the name of the great river" hatch. Every morning from mid-June to mid September, traps small tricos massive crash. These are small defects for serious, ranging from # 22 - # 30, and requires some skill to fish properly. Caddis also come during the warmer months, and # 16 - # 20 Elk Hair Caddis do well.

Nymphing can be a more popular method. All nymphs standard works well, even Prince, Hare's Ear, Pheasant Tail, the Copper Johns. The best year bet, however, is an imitation Scud # 16. Scud (shrimp freshwater small) are a source of food than any along the river, 365 days a year. They are the best fish around weeds.

Many other techniques have also fished in the creek. Egg imitation flies were more likely fish that all employers combined. Orange, pink, peach, white, and all are good. To San Juan, and coils of different jobs as well. The river also works well for spin fishermen. 1/16-1/32 oz spinners and spoons to almost any brand or color will always be fish. Models of Oz 1/32-1/128 Marabou work very well in black, brown, green and olive.

Whatever the technique you choose to use the river current flow is a big trout. With many miles of trout water, it will be difficult to find a better functioning in southern Missouri. With its beauty and excellent trout fishing is a stream that supports the interests of all fishermen.

I just started fly fishing and need to try new flies and it came in a pack. Northern New Jersey

Living where you're at right now I'd say no.
This time of year in that area your fly fishing is going to be very limited.
1rst thing in the morning until 10am you will need the following:
ant patterns - including flying ants
beatle patterns
griffith's gnats
small blue wing olives (size 20-22)
micro tan and olive caddis (size 18 and 20)

If you decide to fish the evening take some small caddis and blue wing olive patterns as well as some Isonychia (slate drake/chocolate drake)
some small sulphers and a few large stimulators just for the helluva it.

When it comes to fly fishing in Idaho last vacation to South Fork Snake River undoubtedly tops the list. The river begins in Yellowstone National Park and flows directly from the Palisades Dam in Grand Teton National Park. The southern branch is the part of the Snake River, which runs from Palisades Dam and Henry Fork. It is the perfect combination of great fish, great scenery and accommodation near Jackson Hole.

The best time for South Fork Fly Fishing

Fly fishing in the region starts from the last week of June to the first week of July with the onset of salmon flies, Output yellow, and Golden Stones. Late Fall is a favorite time for fishing for many local fishermen, water levels are considerably lower than in spring.

This gives anglers the opportunity to venture into new areas of Yellowstone National Park in the range Henry. The fish are ready to put a good fight in this part of the season. You can reduce the booster and flies to keep a few "proven" patterns if you know what works. Read on to discover some of the best fly patterns to use in Alaska.

Glo Bugs

What exactly is a scud?

Hi, in fly fishing, there is a fly called a 'scud'. there are lots of different ones, actually. i see them everywhere (in the stores I mean), but what do they immitate in the water? is there a thing called a scud in the water? are there spin fishing lures that imitate them...? do they catch fish? when would you use one????

they imitate fresh water shrimp, the real thing is hard to see but they are around, you'll usually find them in shallow water with little to no current and next to cover (weeds, reeds ect) in still water they will be suspended in the water in rivers they tend to be in the cover and toward the bottom. really more of a lake bug but they are in rivers too. scuds can actually pass for several other things if the fish aren't being to selective (uncased caddis, dobson fly).

I've used them when I've run out of caddis nymphs, usually clipped the legs off though. I use them is slow runs, usually suspended below an indicator next to weed beds, they'd be good for lakes and ponds but I don't really fish them very much, rivers are more my thing. and yes they catch fish as long as that is what the fish are eating and you present them correctly.

The river in southern Missouri is one of the most pristine and beautiful country. Winding through some of the most beautiful hills and valleys of the Ozarks has to offer attractive pastoral is evident. The river flows entirely through the Ozark National Park Scenic waterways, leading to the development of riverbeds limited access and the public good. And no wonder. COLD RIVER, clear water habitat is perfect for rainbow and brown trout. In fact, the river seems tailor-made for trout fishing. Statewide trout regulations are in force, and no bait restrictions. Cafes are not stored at that location downstream, but many migrate upstream. Consequently, many more big brown river came to this area.

The area of White Ribbon can be divided into two distinct sections. The first section ISS 5 miles from Cedar Welch Spring Grove. The river here is relatively slow and shallow, and can get warm in summer. Temperatures on the site occasionally mid 70s. In general, trout are kept in spring and autumn. While Akers Ferry, smallmouth bass begin to predominate, and the river becomes the country's best smallmouth streams below the spring round.

The fishing techniques in this are many and varied. This is a surprisingly good fishing fly dry. Trico is "the name of the great river" hatch. Every morning from mid-June to mid September, traps small tricos massive crash. These are small defects for serious, ranging from # 22 - # 30, and requires some skill to fish properly. Caddis also come during the warmer months, and # 16 - # 20 Elk Hair Caddis do well.

Nymphing can be a more popular method. All nymphs standard works well, even Prince, Hare's Ear, Pheasant Tail, the Copper Johns. The best year bet, however, is an imitation Scud # 16. Scud (shrimp freshwater small) are a source of food than any along the river, 365 days a year. They are the best fish around weeds.

Many other techniques have also fished in the creek. Egg imitation flies were more likely fish that all employers combined. Orange, pink, peach, white, and all are good. To San Juan, and coils of different jobs as well. The river also works well for spin fishermen. 1/16-1/32 oz spinners and spoons to almost any brand or color will always be fish. Models of Oz 1/32-1/128 Marabou work very well in black, brown, green and olive.

Whatever the technique you choose to use the river current flow is a big trout. With many miles of trout water, it will be difficult to find a better functioning in southern Missouri. With its beauty and excellent trout fishing is a stream that supports the interests of all fishermen.

Hair Caddis

Fly tying, how do you get an elk hair caddis just right for large ripples and other problems on the water?

I have found a new hole that is very productive in large 'Bows and Whitefish, but my nymphs snag and my dry flies cannot be seen.I tied a new pattern with the brightest dyed hair, dubbing and tinsel, without leaving the true appearances of the fly. What is a bright colored caddis that is in the realistic boundaries of a real caddis, anybody with excperiance help me out? What is a good, bright colored caddis????

You can tie a caddis anyway you want. Elk hair is a very buoyant material and if you hackle the body the fly should float even better.
I have no problem using a size 14 elk hair caddis as my dry that supports a size 16 pheasant tail as a dropper.

If you have a hard time seeing the caddis on the water try adding a post to it of hi-vis yarn where you tie in the elk hair. The trout won't see it, but you will.

If your nymphs are snagging, try using as indicator
