The dry fly is designed to adapt to a natural watercourse or stolen land that has fallen and is floating on the water surface. It depends on where you are going to fish (river or stream or lake).

The Pheasant Tail is a great fly. You can fish it down near the bottom in the rivers or as a dropper off of a dry fly in either the rivers or lakes.

In the rivers, if you are fishing deep where the fish are, you have to be right down to the bottom, but not with so much weight that it stays on the bottom, it has to float along drag free so play with the amount of leader below the strike indicator and the amount of split shot to find the right combination. One smaller split shot is usually all you need, sometimes two or one larger. The amount of leader below the strike indicator is usually one and one half the depth of the water, but you may need to adjust that.

If you are fishing a smaller stream then you will mostly be casting with out a strike indicator and you will practice on keeping the nymph drag free by just watching it. Mend the line as necessary to achieve this.

For dry flies, when you see a fish working a particular spot, in either a lake or a river, then time your cast. In a lake fish usually work an area they feel comfortable in and will work in a pattern. Watch the rises and try to anticipate where to cast to. Don't cast right to where you just saw a rise. The fish isn't there anymore. Most of the time the fish is down deeper where it is safe and it comes up to take an insect it spotted. As soon as it grabs that insect it turns and goes down again. So, look for a pattern and mentally time the rises, that will give you a good idea on where to place your dry fly and when to place it.

The same rule sort of holds true in most rivers. A fish picks a spot it feels safe in, be it a ledge or a rock or whatever and it stays there. As food comes by, it rises or moves over and takes the insect, then goes back to it's hole.

So, for dry flies, watch to see where a fish rises several times and remembering that as soon as it grabs the fly on the surface it goes back down, get your timing and location to cast to upstream and make your cast. It is best to cast upstream onto the seam the fish is working and let the fly drift down drag free over the area of the fish. Make some casts and if nothing happens and or the fish still rises but ignores your fly, then switch flies and try again.

this is kind of a stupid question but what is the difference in dry and wet flies for fly fishing i just started.

Dry flies float on top of the water and represent insects in the final stage of life when they are flying around and laying eggs on or around the water.

Wet flies can indicate the ealier stages of the flies, like the larva. When people say wet flies they can mean a couple different things, they can mean nymphs (early bug stage) or emergers (rising bug from bottom) or even streamers (large flies being pulled through current to represent smaller fish or leeches or crawfish or anything that swims underwater.)

what are some good trout streamers beside woolly bugger?

I love the good ol' Mickey Finn. I dont think it gets enough praise but it works for me time after time. I like to use the marabou version. I just like the way marabou "breathes" in the water. Another good streamer is Bob Clouser's Clouser Minnow. I like to strip it in slow current and it also works well when cast at a 45 degree angle downstream and swung through the current. In N.E. Ohio we also use Dredgers...These are similar to Wooly Buggers with beadchain or dumbell eyes tied in contrasting colors. The weight of the eyes gets the fly down to the bottom where the Steelhead are lying.

Dry flies used to imitate adult insects, so before you fish a trout stream, make sure you have an understanding of what they usually feed on fish before deciding to use dry flies. Once you have determined to be a natural choice for a particular stream, trout, pasta can be applied to your line of clothing they will float up into the water. Line Fly

Fishing nymph flies on floating fly line?

I heard it before but forgot... What can I attach to my floating fly line to make my flies sink?

Second question first; the second fly is referred to as the dropper and the first fly, the point fly, is used as an indicator.
With reference to the first question; if your intent is to turn your floating line into a temporary sink tip line, the easiest way to achieve that is to use a very fast or extra fast sinking poly leader, it probably won't get you as deep in current but it should do and they are readily available from any well stocked fly shop. I do know that Cabela's carries them. An alternative is to acquire a length of Cortland LC 13 lead core line. Cut a length of it off and put a loop in each end and you are good to go, attach one end of it to your fly line and a three to six foot leader to the other end. Start with three foot length of the LC13 and work your up from there and remember to open your casting loops up if you don't want it to get ugly. As an aside the 13 refers to the weight of the line in grains/foot. The best solution of all though is to get either a full sinking line or a sink tip.

Snoopy Part 1 of 7: The Dog Chapman Bowl- An Excerpt from The Great Pumpkin Letters

Chief Crazy Captain Christo was reminiscing the other day and came up with a brilliant plan. While watching Snoopy carrying his dog bowl in his mouth, the Good Chief Crazy Captain Christo shrieked out loud, " Eureka, a golden nugget is passing my way. Watch out for Salty Sea Dog Legs and pay attention Tiger Pawns, er I mean Prawns,"

He got on the Hot Line and called up none other than Dog Chapman, the WORLD famous BOUNTY HUNTER. But the line was busy. Ah, a lawman's work is always busy. So Chief Crazy Captain Christo thought,

" HMMM, if I can't get a hold of the Dog maybe I will bring the BOWL to the Dog!"

So with the immortal courage of a confident carpet cleaner, the Good Chief set out to find Dog.

Within 45 nanoseconds he found the Dog hot on the chase of another Meth addict and let the Dog have his day. After the arrest was complete, Chief Crazy Captain Christo disguised himself. Instead of the normal O-Range Blob of Light, he disguised himself as a PERFECT O-Range BOWL. To describe the O-Range Bowl would not do it justice but I will try anyway, Here is the description:

Like an almost perfect circle, it is made of all wood. On the top of the bowl is coping where skateboarders do the grinding ( sparks fly people!) There is always a beautiful scent of a fine ash and with smoke billowing over the top from barbecuing down below. On this particular day, the bowl was smokin hot. I now bring you the exact words from Dog Chapman and his wife Beth. Their names have been changed here to McDog and McBeth to protect their privacy.

McDog:" Hey Beth, where did that bowl come from?"

McBeth:" I don't know but I think Johnny B. Garcia is hiding in there. Let's go check it out Dog!"

McDog:" Cover me Beth. I'm goin in. Keep the cameras rolling. I've never seen anything like this.

Wow wee! What a bowl!"

As the two awesome bounty hunters peeked inside the O-Range Bowl, they were mesmerized by what they saw. Down at the bottom of the bowl, where the smoke was originating, a lone figure wearing an O-Range chef's apron and one O-Range sock was turning a rack of lamb on his weber grill.

This is where the introduction of the most famous character of all time comes into play. Pay attention here folks, it is the character you wish you could be but you don't have the b***s or no balls as the case may be. Listen and learn.

McDog was the first to draw his weapon.

McDog: " Hey Bra! We got you surrounded. Give it up or we will taser you right here in your O-Range Bowl"

McBeth:" Get him Dog!"

But the tasers had no effect whatsoever on this now incensed character played by Chief Crazy Captain Christo. Now for the moment you have all been waiting for, the introduction of ZING.

Zing can always be seen at a barbecue listening to Rob Zombie's What? Thumpin in the background.

Zing is what you could call the Over Delivery Guy or O.D.G for those who like to shorten descriptions.

Even though the tasers had no effect, he didn't want to hurt McDog or McBeth's FEELINGS ( nothing more than FEELINGS) so he did what Zing does best. It hurts to describe this but here goes. Zing did the Electrifried Crappy Flop that went on for exactly three minutes and thirty three seconds. After the performance of a lifetime, Zing casually got up and gave McDog and McBeth a lesson they will never forget. Here is what Zing said.

ZING " Must you always prove you are the TOP Dog. I was preparing a wonderful world of delightful dishes and you have to come in an taser me on the spot. Dog and Beth, I just wanted to say Thank You for all your hard work and was going to surprise you with a welcome home Dog and Beth party with my famous rack of Lamb that tastes divine but I guess you will have to wait till the Eighth letter I write. Now if you will forgive me I have six more Snoopy letters to write."

With that Zing and his O-Range Bowl vanished into thin air. Stay tuned for the next six Snoopy versions of The Great Pumpkin Letters.

If you need a group project for a children's club and would like to teach the basic wooden craft, consider a simple nest box or shelf. For projects of this size, craft supplies wood can be very profitable, especially if you're willing to use waste wood and power tools on loan. Many people are more than willing to donate or offer the use of tools and supplies may even find volunteers to assist in teaching. Yet still to purchase some essential supplies wooden boats. Goggles for the eyes is a must for all aspects of woodworking. If you can not see your project when finished with it, is not worth the trouble.

Note: Never allow children to use tools power of any nature without the constant supervision of adult hands.

The Internet is full of models simple wooden boats are free to download and copy. Consider designing your own if you do not need or want. Visit your local library for a wealth of books on the subject or scan magazines at your local supermarket for handicrafts in wood.

Everyone has a great time. Lessons are learned about nature and our place in it and indelible memories are created.

A few key strategies will make these first outings go much smoother. As I mentioned in "Fly Fishing with Children Part 1 - Getting Them Started", the days when you are teaching your children to fish are not about you fishing but about them learning to fish. Don't expect to present any flies of your own. If you start with this in mind the day will be so much more rewarding for both you and your miniature anglers. Break the sport into bite-sized pieces so you can explain key concepts and so they will be able to ask questions as they think of them. Don't get yourself in a hurry. Take a breath and relax.

Create an opportunity for success: Pick water that you know is likely to yield as many opportunities as possible for catching fish. This may seem impossible these days but try to pick water that does not get over-fished. Go somewhere that contains a healthy population of fish and that is easily accessible. Mid-Summer is a great time for a first day on the water - the flows are down from run-off conditions, the bugs are thriving, the fish are settled in, what more could you want - everyone should be fishing!

Entomology: Take a minute at the start of the day to turn over some rocks and show your kiddos some great creepy-crawlies live and up-close. Squish a cased caddis out of it's shell so they can understand what's going on there. Just one, though. I don't think Mother Nature will mind. See if you can find some worms at the edges of the water under the rocks and dirt. Look for stone-fly husks on dry rocks and brush along the banks, they're very cool and dramatic examples of the diverse bug life on a creek or a river. Point out the tiny callibaetis larvae crawling around the bottoms of slimy upside-down rocks. Kids will roll bugs around their fingers all day if you let them.

Rigging: You will already have spent some time with your children in the park teaching them to cast, so now set them up with single-dry-fly-rigs that are easy to cast and don't tangle as much as multi-fly nymph rigs. Kids (or any other beginners, for that matter) do not need complicated and difficult to manage, much less cast, 2 or 3-fly "prospecting" rigs loaded with weight and strike indicators. Start them out with a nice parachute-style dry fly, like a Pale Morning Dun with a nice hi-vis post on it's back, a Royal Wulff, a Royal Humpy, a Royal Stimulator, a Parachute Adams - something they can keep an eye on as it drifts. Initially, the fishing is not as important as the comprehension of what they're trying to do.

Presentation: Talk to them about the presentation, hold a fly by the curve of the hook and imitate it's presentation and drift in front of their eyes - let them imitate the drift with their own fly and appreciate how handsome those hand-tied flies are in the bright Summer sun. Point out air bubbles in the currents and talk to them about keeping the rod tip moving at the same speed as the bubbles. Toss in a small stick and point out how it moves at the same speed as those bubbles - that's a good one. Discuss slack line and how it must be taken up so they can set the hook when they see a fish take the fly. Discuss the set, it should be gentle and easy, small but firm - so the presentation of the fly can continue down the stream if they miss the fish. This also helps develop good habits for the nymphing lesson they will get on another day.

Wading: We had a couple of rules when my kids were beginning to fish rivers and streams. They have always been great, competitive swimmers but they were only allowed to wade up to their knees. Any deeper and there were consequences. The other rule was that they had to remain upstream of me at all times. Simple, common-sense rules. They were broken regularly and consequences were handed out to match the "violation".

Finally: Let them fish. Now your job is to watch carefully for their safety as well as their frustration. Your job and your reward is to step to the rescue for those casting knots, snags, lost footings, and hopefully to help land a fish. You can fish on your own later.
