Fly Fishing Reels
I mixed up by so many Fishing Reels.Help!?

I heared so many fishing reels like spincast reel, spinning reel, surfcasting reel, jigging reel, big game reel/trolling reel, fly reel, baitcaster reel. What are the difference?I really wanna know the difference of the Jigging Reel and the Trolling Reel, baitcaster reel and the trolling reel.Does surfcasting reel the same with the spinning reel?I think the same reel with different fishing lures for different types of fishing,it will have different names,am I right?
Could someone list me all the lures, different lures for different fishing types?

These are your basic fishing reels:

Spinning reels or some times called open faced reels - a good all around reel. The correct size will handle most fish.

Spin cast reels or some times called closed faced reels - usually not as well built as spinning reels. A good choice for lite duty fishing like panfish. Most kids learn to cast with these reels because of ease of use.

Bait cast reels - designed to cast 3/8 oz. lures or heavier. A little harder to use but once mastered you can cast further and more accurate. A favorite of Pro bass fisherman.

Trolling reels - any reel can be used for trolling , often refered to as a level wind reel {similar to a bait cast reel} these reels can have a line counter on them which counts the amount of feet you have out.

Surf reels - can be either spinning or casting reels, the size to match the species you are fishing for.

Fly reels - a special reel to hold your fly line, different sizes or weight # to match you fly rods, these reels are made with and with out a drag.

There are two many lures to list, if you have a species you want to catch I can recommend some of my favorites.

The history of fly fishing goes back nearly 2,000 years many cultures around the world have adopted many styles of fly fishing. In recent years there has become a very popular sport and is practiced around the world.

The basics of fly fishing are simple enough to be learned in a few hours with the assistance of a guide. Mastering advanced techniques of sport is a completely different ball game and has many years of dedicated effort. These factors maintain interest Fishermen of all life.

Fly fishing is versatile enough to be adapted to a wide range of fishing conditions. Whether you are fishing trout in a mountain stream in Europe or North America, or even cast a fly for bonefish in the Caribbean. The sport is so flexible that it has become very popular worldwide.

The first recordings of the fly fishing show that this fishery was conducted by fishermen from Macedonia. It uses six foot rod and six lines foot attached to artificial flies made of a hook decorated with insect wings and red wool. Very little was written about fly fishing in recent years, but the 1496 Treaty was published on fishing at an angle. Later, in 1653 Izaak Walton wrote a "The Complete Angler 'book contains several chapters about fly fishing. All information in these books indicates that the fact that fly fishing is a well - known for sport fishing in England and Scotland. Many flying clubs fishing began in the 1800s in England and this served to popularize the sport much.

Surface water courses of rivers in southern England chalk were suitable for dry fly fishing because of the growth of weeds just below the water level. North of England and Scotland also saw the growth of fishing wet fly. Fishermen in southern England, were in favor of dry fly fishing and wet fly considers a distortion of the poor fishing for their sport. Even Today, the English continue to carry out fly fishing in the rivers of chalk, but access to the currents is mainly through private property.

The U.S. fishermen in the Catskills in New York began to experiment with the dry fly in the late 1800s designs. It began designing artificial flies to imitate the insects that trout feed on. Some of the released fishermen fishing adventures, which served to increase interest in fly fishing even more. American fishermen were more open to experimentation in the wet fly fishing, compared to English.

The interest in fishing fly has continued to grow in the U.S. and Canada. After the Second World War, fiberglass rods were manufactured along with leaders of synthesis and line. Sport thus became accessible to people interested in fly fishing. Dry flies used for fishing in inland waters of rivers and streams. Inshore fishing is carried out in the bays and wet flies mainly used. Bass fishermen have also been adapted fly fishing.

The places in the hemisphere south and the Caribbean are popular destinations for fly fishing saltwater. The fishermen travel long distances to fish for tarpon and bonefish. Belize in South America offers both, saltwater and freshwater fly fishing.

The basic equipment needed to start fly fishing is becoming more affordable due to technical improvements in the field. The popularity of the sport is growing worldwide. There are plenty of opportunities and choice of locations for fly fishing is unlimited.

A fisherman that fly fishes knows the most fun comes from dry fly fishing. In this article I hope to enlighten all of you with some favourite techniques.

Watching the fly drift on the water, the flash of the trout grabbing it and then the bend in your fly rod. This is exactly what all fly fishermen hope to experience. Just to get this experience most fly fishermen will go to extreme measures to make this happen. Sure most guys donÂ’t mind taking a big old rainbow or brown on a nymph but catching that brookie on a dry fly is usually always preferred.

When I first get to the stream I am going to fish I put on a nymph. The reason for this is that I can be catching fish while I am paying attention to whatÂ’s going on, on the top. When I finally see whatÂ’s going on than its time to switch to a dry fly and have lots of fun.

Your equipment choice is very important. I suggest using as long of a rod as possible. For some reason some fishermen like to use shorter rods but I canÂ’t think of a better feeling than the fight of trout fighting on a long rod.

It is also best to use a large arbour reel. A large arbour reel keeps your fly line supple, without curls from tight diameter storage. A fine drag system or none at all is important to protect the tippet from breaking when the fish runs. Something else thatÂ’s important is good rod balance. The reel weight must make the fly rod by the cork grip balance. If you have the right balance casting will feel second nature. Once you have the right balance you will be able to feel your fly trailing on the leader.

Understanding these aspects of fly fishing really is not difficult. It does take time and practice. With the practice you will get to the point where you understand all aspects of your equipment and the details of your techniques. If you keep going after trout, especially with a fly rod then chances are you will never go back to spinning equipment.

ItÂ’s going to take hours and hours of practice. I remember practicing my casting at the local park so that I could just focus on casting instead of worrying about the water. Fly fishing when mastered is an art that really can be mastered by anyone.

The purpose of any fly fisherman is having the right to attract fish to strike. Trout are notoriously selective when it comes to feeding your instinctive self-protection. But the same size and model for each situation is cumbersome and expensive. So to attract trout, I suggest you make fly fishing lures you in following the water. An Elk Hair Caddis, size 18 (# 18) is number one on the list. Caddis hatches are prolific throughout the country and this fly, it is easy to see, go trout fishing. Caddis fly a standard, often called cinnamon or Brown should be back up # 20, in the case of small Caddis hatch.

The fly is next to be transported and Adam parachute the parachute is easy to see that maggot fly is in the water film. The parachute Adams is good for many types of traps everything when the trout are on the rise Top all that you can not see what you eat. Size 18 is the best, but its size is a size of about 20 to use if the trout do not respond.

To complete the picture of a fly that you should take the following flies: Blue Wing Olive # 20 Pale Morning Dun # 20 Emerge, the two modes of Dark and Light Hendrickson # 18. Light Cahill # 20, Mosquito # 18 and # 20, Golden Stonefly # 16 Black Stonefly # 14 and # 12, and if the fish are rising to the surface at all points an Adams Wulff # 18 or # 16 fatalities Madame X.

Now my favorite way of fishing, because I have caught trout five times more nymphs on the surface. The number one nymph fishing is hare's ear. He made a good ear seems a little wool with a shiny thread woven is the larva of Caddis and all current. I found that smaller is better when fishing nymphs as some of these dimensions may surprise you. Fish size 20 Hare's Ear has fish as big as an arc of 12 books in one. When I address on a rock and Stonefly nymphs are many, I am a Black or Golden Pheasant Tail (PT) # 18. If an Stonefly Hatch is imminent in a few days, I'll use black (# 12) or gold (# 14) Stonefly nymph. If it is a creek or river, brown trout, as Madison or the Trinity River and my other nymphs do not work, I'll use a Bitch Creek (# 16) to scare some measures.

Other nymphs should be carried out are: Brown Czech Nymph # 20, # 20 Olive Scud and Scud Tan # 20. There are two other categories, banners and Emergers. First, the banners, I think you only need two fish and the Woolly Bugger, Muddler. Again, if the fish are not nymphs they must use their natural instinct to find a meal that is leaking. Let two banners I drift a little sooner than let it swing in the area could supply. Strikes are hard and fast. You can also take off one of the banners around the feeding area. Give the action of a minnow LAME is the best way to back streamers. For Emergers, took a lot of trout fishing and emerge just below the surface. Caddis take too long to reach the surface and often struggle to find their wings. Trout enjoy this event and these null and void leveling. Two nymphs are excellent for Emerge Loop Wing Olive # 18 and Loop Wing Emerge Gray # 18. Another one is dry fly fishing the Green River Caddis # 18 Zink caught with little progress and a foot of the cape. You can tell when you have a lightning strike launched by the side of the trout when he turned the nymph. These lures fly fishing cover the largest river trout appropriate.

God is love?...it doesn't sound like it to me!!?

"The glory of Israel will fly away like a bird, for your children will die at birth or perish in the womb or never even be conceived. Even if your children do survive to grow up, I will take them from you. It will be a terrible day when I turn away and leave you alone. I have watched Israel become as beautiful and pleasant as Tyre. But now Israel will bring out her children to be slaughtered." O LORD, what should I request for your people? I will ask for wombs that don't give birth and breasts that give no milk. The LORD says, "All their wickedness began at Gilgal; there I began to hate them. I will drive them from my land because of their evil actions. I will love them no more because all their leaders are rebels. The people of Israel are stricken. Their roots are dried up; they will bear no more fruit. And if they give birth, I will slaughter their beloved children." (Hosea 9:11-16 NLT)

I think it's important to note that if you believe that the bible is "the literal word of god" then the god you believe in will appear to be somewhat schizophrenic - in the first half, the old testament (The Jewish Torah), it seems that god is forever angry, punishing and blaming and smiting, followed by some pretty sick stunts (the story of Job comes to mind) and then in the second act, the new testament, he's a god of love and forgiveness with nary an explanation of this change of heart.

However, if you open your mind and accept that the bible may be the word of god but has clearly been interpreted by flawed men who will have put their own spin on things then maybe you can decide whether god is love by just asking yourself what you believe.

Although its true that most trout feed below the surface most of the time, my favorite kind of fly fishing is dry fly fishing. This is where you present an imitation of an adult insect that has reached maturity and is floating on the surface film of the water. The excitement I receive from seeing a large trout come from below and take the fly is how I got hooked onto fly fishing in the first place. Most fly fishermen will have success catching trout, but at the expense of watching a strike indicator all day. If you're like me, the sight of a rising trout will make your heart skip a beat. Know in advance that if you only fish dry flies, you will probably catch less fish than your friends that are nymph fishing. However, these 5 tips will greatly increase your productivity and help you catch more trout on dry flies.

1) Read the water: Often, beginners are guilty of walking right up to the water and casting. To be effective as a fly fisherman you will need to take the time to learn how trout live and feed. Subsequently, you will then understand where likely trout lies are in the water. When you approach the water look for places where fish can hold without expending much energy and where they have protection from predators. Now, hopefully you are wearing the requisite polarized glasses so you can learn to identify a holding trout under the water. Focus on those spots where they should be and wait for any shadows to move. Those moving shadows are feeding trout. the biggest clue to where a trout is holding is when they are feeding on the surface. Look for small ripples that accompany the small splash of a surface feeding trout. Now keep watching and you will see that trout come to the surface.

2) Use as long a leader as you can: When trout feed on the surface, they are obviously looking up to see their meals coming to them. Because of this, if your fly line is too close to your leader the trout will see it and will not take the fly. Make sure to have on as long a leader as you are comfortable fishing to prevent unnecessary spooking of the trout. Sometimes there is too much foliage to have a long leader. I try to have at least 9 feet of leader and more if possible. Longer leader is harder to manipulate, so practice, practice, practice.

3) Match the hatch: Take notice of the bugs flying around you. Give the bushes next to the water a little shake a get a good look at what flies off. It is good to know the color of the naturals around you, but it is imperative that you have the right size. The right color fly that is too large will leave you empty handed where as the fly that is close in color and is the right size will still be very effective.

4) Cast upstream: Stealth is on your side if you take this approach. As I've already mentioned, if a trout sees your fly line, it wont take your fly. That goes the same for you. If you step into it's view you will have a very frustrating experience. Cast your dry fly upstream. Now, any trout that you may be trying to catch are facing away from you and should be in direct line with your fly that is now traveling downstream towards you and the fish on the current. As the fly makes its way back towards you strip in the loose line so that when trout takes the fly you can set the hook. Avoid casting directly upstream from where you are. This causes your fly to directly follow the fly line and will also make trout wary.

5) Limit false casting: Trout can be very shy and easily put down. The less false casting you do, the more opportunity you will have to catch trout. You should only be false casting to dry your fly. If you are false casting because you lack accuracy, then move closer and perform shorter casts. Move slowly to keep your stealth advantage. when you do false cast, try to change the direction of the cast so the line doesn't fly over the water you are fishing. Practice your casting. Eventually, you should be able to pick up your line and cast it with accuracy the first time.

Put these tips to use and I know your dry fly fishing will improve. Now, go practice and catch some fish.

The dry fly is designed to adapt to a natural watercourse or stolen land that has fallen and is floating on the water surface. The artificial look as close to natural as possible, for trout, and in fact most fish have eyes that would put a 20/20 vision of man shame. Trout take the natural mosquitoes are not much bigger than a pinpoint and a size 12 fly is probably as big as a plate for them, while a faulty link is quickly perceived and missed.

Therefore, the dry fly must be modeled with great attention to color, size, angle wings and a set of hackle. It must be well balanced to ground and boldly on the surface of the water does not withdraw from this or that by the weight of the hook so that it rests on a mixed water. A good hair is not sitting on his tail, or lean on his chin. The closest parallel to the waterline, the best, although many natural flies or current based on their sides, with only one wing stuck.

While most anglers' class dry fly fishing as the most demanding, however, is the best way for a beginner to start learning to fly fish. With a fly drowned, or serpentine, fishing in general for their knowledge current where the fish can lie. But with a hair stands in all the sights and sounds of the river, passing by all the signs of a fish you can flash while you eat or anything. The dry fly casting is also easier to moisture, and the fisherman can see it slip when occurs, and believes that the fish strike and therefore capable of fixing hook faster.

The general principle that the fly fishing dry based is that eh should fly down like the natural flow of insects trapped on the surface of the water film. Despite this, many fishermen fished for years without discovering that your flight is almost never free-floating. Power seem to move with the current, but look carefully, you travel faster than the bubbles and bits of debris floating on the surface? Does slow? If one of them is true that there is a drag and opportunities a place in your fly are slim.

Dry Fly Fishing
whats the difference from wet and dry flies when fly fishing?

this is kind of a stupid question but what is the difference in dry and wet flies for fly fishing i just started.

Dry flies float on top of the water and represent insects in the final stage of life when they are flying around and laying eggs on or around the water.

Wet flies can indicate the ealier stages of the flies, like the larva. When people say wet flies they can mean a couple different things, they can mean nymphs (early bug stage) or emergers (rising bug from bottom) or even streamers (large flies being pulled through current to represent smaller fish or leeches or crawfish or anything that swims underwater.)

Tippet Size - While your cape is one of the best tools, it is often the first to be blamed for not catching fish. Tippet could be part the most underrated equipment. Tippet material today is fantastic, and it is better than No More Fluoroflex RIO.

Directors and fishing many rivers in the west, I found that Tippet critical size is less than that of many fishermen. Almost all summer Fluoroflex RIO Tippet I use more. Yes, it is expensive, however, the benefits are worth the price. I have listed some suggestions below.

  • Fly selection and presentation - This is by far the reasons for catching a ton of fish and very few fish. Tippet size is rarely the reason.
  • Tippet Size - I have three basic dimensions of pilgrimage in my bag: 2x, 3x, 4x are all Fluoroflex RIO Plus. I'm not even a spool of 5x. I use 2x fishing large streamers and dry flies. I will also use If I am fishing nymphs large insects, such as a belt. 2x can be used all summer to South Fork of the Snake, for example. When the big dry fly fishing as beads and Chernobyl ants, I use nothing more than 2x. Then tie a dropper 3 times the big dry. When the fish are up in the small dry 4x I use for cleaning is often linked through a drip of 4x. Sizing trickle down to the flies can save. If the fly is taken down in a rock or tree, usually lose only the dropper, if the size of your cape.
  • Fish Health - All we are concerned about fish health. What better way to care for them to get on and off the hook as quickly as possible. When you use the heaviest fish Tippet really help. They recover quickly and are back in water fast.
  • More catch fish - Tippet sizes large, they lose fewer fish. Lose fewer fish means that they lose fewer flies. Ideal for fish and better for you. Save money - you save money in the flies with a heavy coat. You can put that savings for buy more expensive hardware of your tippet.

Use the largest Tippet can get away. The fish thank you.

Dry fly angling is at the top of any fly fishermanÂ’s list of fun

fishing. The visual dry fly catch continues to excite many

anglers as the best way to angle the fly. Many anglers try to

keep themselves busy with various fly tying techniques as well as

nymphing techniques. We will discuss several of those techniques

below, but for now we will start with dry fly techniques.

To watch the fly drift free, then the flash of a trout, followed

by your fly rod bend - thid is what most of us are after. To

experience it, fly fishermen will go to measures beyond most

other fishermen. I would say that 30% of fly fishing angling time

is spent fishing a dry fly. My favorite fly fishing memories have

included big fish taken on a dry fly. Sure, dredging a nymph and

hooking an old Brown or a huge River Rainbow is satisfying, but

IÂ’ll take a brookie on a dry fly, at any size, on any day.

When I go to a stream, new or old, I put on a nymph first. There

are exceptions (fish rising everywhere to an obvious hatch) that

make me poke around in my compartment box, but the indicator and

nymph are my first choice. I can catch fish while I am observing

what is going on in the stream. When I have things figured out,

then I go to the dry fly. This is where I have the most fun.

Equipment is important! Try to use as long a fly rod as you can

get away with. Some anglers use a 5'6" fly rod for dry fly

fishing, but generally, a longer rod eight feet or longer is

desirable. A medium action or faster is desirable to have the

reaction and hook setting speed that dry fly angling sometimes

takes.

It is also best to use large arbor reels. A large arbor keeps a

fly line supple, without curls from a tight diameter storage. A

fine drag system, or none at all, in important to protect the

fine tippet from breaking when a fish runs. A fly rod must also

balance. The reel weight must make the fly rod at the point where

your index finger rests on the cork grip "balance." That would be

where the fly rod hangs level on the balance of your index finger

on the cork. This makes the feel of the cast second nature. You

will get to a level where casting becomes second nature, you will

feel the fly trailing on your leader, the rod tip bending, and

the fly line loop during your cast like you feel the tracking of

your wheels on the highway while you are driving.

Understanding these important aspects of fly fishing is not

difficult, it just takes some experience. You will soon get to a

point where you understand each and every aspect of your

equipment and fishing technique in focused detail. Especially if

you continue to go after trout with a fly rod, particularly a dry

fly rod. Just remember to balance your equipment. You will see

the merit of that as you fish!

Fly line choices come into play when thinking about dry fly

equipment. I like fly line colors in gray, green or white. Colors

other than this are used to catch fishermen at the fly shop

counter. At fly line weights less than 4-weights, double tapers

or weight forwards, you will find you will have a very hard time

telling the difference. A double taper will last twice as long

because you can turn the fly line around when it is worn. But I

seem to gravitate toward a weight forward. If you like to "shoot"

casts, the weight forward seems to work better.

If you want, you can experiment with mini shooting heads and

custom made lines for your dry fly fishing pursuits. Loop offers

many different fly lines available for experimentation.

Leaders are an important aspect of dry fly fishing. Many anglers

like to use Rio leaders, which are very supple, yet the butt

through midsection is stiff enough to make the leader straighten,

or "turn over." For small streams, a 9 foot leader in 6x is

perfect. If you need to step down to 7x, a length of tippet can

be added.

whats the right fly fishing line?

i have a fly rod for both spin and fly fishing( im only using it for fly fishing) i was wondering what the right line was to use.

i know theres things like 2x 3x 4x and so on....i get what it means i just dont know what to use.

i also dont know if i shoulod have sinking or floating lines.

also leader? what do i use?

i am fishing for trout in rivers, ponds and lakes

Well you need to match the weight of your fly line with the weight of your rod your using for best castability (that should be on your rod ).

I recommend a floating line for dry fly fishing.

As far as leaders go I like a tapered leader/tippet it helps with the way a fly lands on the water . Also use as small of a diameter tippet as possible ,especially in lakes and ponds.

What are terrestrials?

Strictly speaking, terrestrials are all creatures that live on land. This would, of course, include humans. However, when fly fishing for trout we are generally referring to insects and sometimes even small rodents. There are fly patterns that imitate mice that can be used to lure big trout, but they are most often used in bass fishing. The most common terrestrial flies are ants and grasshoppers (usually referred to as "hoppers" by fly anglers.) There are also patterns that imitate beetles, crickets, cicadas and worms (the green inchworm is a very effective pattern in the spring when these larvae are abundant.) There are also patterns like the Fat Albert and the Chernobyl ant which don't really imitate any specific insect but somehow work their magic in enticing trout to rise to them.

When is the best time to fish a terrestrial pattern?

Terrestrial insects don't become active until the spring. Many, like the grasshopper, don't really hit their stride until late summer. So, the best time to fish these patterns is from early spring all the way through the fall. Like most things in life, there are no absolutes. Sometimes a hopper will work in the spring. I have also caught trout with an ant pattern on winter days when there were no real ants to be found. Often times I choose to fish a terrestrial when nothing else seems to work. You may be familiar with the phrase "match the hatch." This refers to when anglers attempt to match their flies to what the trout are feeding on. Often, if your fly is the correct pattern but is too big or small it will get some looks but no strikes. This is much less of a problem with terrestrial fly fishing because the terrestrial is not usually the primary food source and any size presents a tasty morsel to hungry trout.

How should I fish Terrestrial flies?

The best place to fish terrestrials and certainly the place to start your casts is where the real bugs enter the water. Most terrestrials can't fly, and if they can it is for very short distances. So, it makes sense that most ants, inchworms, beetles and grasshoppers enter the water by falling from overhanging brush or from the side of the bank. Start casting to the opposite bank and let the fly travel with the current making sure to keep enough slack line on the water to prevent the line from pulling the fly causing it to drag against the current. This presentation of the fly is called a dead drift. If there is drag, the fly will not drift naturally and the trout will not strike your fly... usually. With Grasshoppers, often the technique used is to actually overshoot the far end of the bank and pull the fly back to the waters edge. If there is no immediate strike, often a couple of twitches on your fly line will generate some action. With the smaller flies, it is best to stick with the dead drift. Without question the water near the banks will be the most productive terrestrial fishing.

Another option is to use a larger fly as an indicator. My personal favorite is the hopper because of their abundance around the waters I fish. This fly setup is referred to as a "hopper and dropper" rig. The hopper acts not only as a standard fly, but it is also connected to the smaller "dropper" fly and is used to signify any strikes on the trailing fly. The dropper can be any nymph, wet fly, or small dry fly and is connected to the hook of the hopper by a length of tippet anywhere from 9 inches to 2 feet long. My dropper flies are usually tied on with 18 inches of tippet. If the hopper moves or stops in a sudden manner or has any unusual movement set the hook!

If you don't keep a few terrestrial flies in your fly box, you are really limiting yourself. In the very least, a few ants and grasshoppers should always find their way into your fly box. You will appreciate them on those days when you fish with nothing else because of how effective they are as well as that rare day when nothing else worked and your terrestrial saved you from a day without a catch.
