Fly Fishing Materials
do i have a fishing problem?

i am constantly wanting more and more fly fishing and/or fly tying materials...even if i dont have the money i still look and want...do i have a problem or am i just addicted to it?
no i dont spend necesary money...im still a kid...still at home....

Nah, it'll pass. And I know exactly WHEN it will pass. It will pass when:

...you have a stockpile of materials that you are accustomed to working on and when you have enough to tie the flies you need.

...you have the necessary tools to easily and conveniently tie the flies you need.

...you have tried all the funky and interesting materials, tools, books, etc., you see online or in the fly shop. You will sort out the things that are really useful and what is merely faddish or excessive, and you have narrowed your commonly used materials and tools to the ones you really need and use.

...you have learned most of the basic techniques and can easily tie the flies you need for an upcoming excursion.

..the novelty has worn away from this new hobby, and it's more like fishing itself (you still look forward to and enjoy it, but you're not so ga-ga about it).

Once those conditions have been met, your life will go back to more-or-less normal, and you'll just be fly tier. You might still be obsessed, but the obsession will "settle down" somewhat so you can do the other things in life that give us enjoyment -- like eat, sleep, go to the toilet, etc.

Clueless about fly fishing?
Me too!
I was very curious about this sport for some time now. I seen it done countless times.

Tried it. Failed.

People are constantly and relentlessly, with their greater patience and understanding tried to rub some skills fly fishing on me - but in vain.

I have resorted to reading for now. I decided than anything I can do, I might as well learn - even just in theory. It helps. I think my car today, "a work underway.

Let's all learn the basics. DEFINITION OF TERMS!
A brief definition of certain terms that I need to know on the fly.

What is Fly Fishing?
Fly fishing is an ancient method and distinct angling, developed primarily for salmonids (trout and salmon, mostly) and now extended to other species such as pike, bass, and carp, as well as a wide range of saltwater species.

Fly casting is seizing or holding a fly rod correctly and adopt correct positions to maintain comfort and balance. The most fundamental rule in the casting is based on how a clock looks. Your points to head up to 12.00, your cast (the tip of your rod) should return at 10:00 and forward Then at 2:00, freeing your line at the end of this motion. It is a common mistake is to dip the stem below the two positions and almost always ends line in a tangle!

Fisherman. (Has something to do with mathematics? "I hate Math!)
This would you stupid! One day you'll learn to fly fish, you'll be called a fisherman. A person catching fish or shellfish with no intent to sell, that includes people from maintaining or capturing people who practice "Catch and Release" method (highly recommended).

The Essentials - If you do not have a complete list of these products, you are NOT Fly Fishing!

Fly fishing rods are long, thin, flexible rods sometimes made of bamboo, but more recently, plastics. Fly rods tend to have large diameter eyes (or guides) spaced along the rod to help control the movement of relatively thick fly line. To help the freedom of movement required to skillfully cast with a fly rod, there is usually little or no butt (handle) extending below the reel. Although fly rods are mainly used for casting from fixed positions, they can also be used for trolling for fish.

Fishing Reel is a device used to deployment and retrieval of fishing line using a spool mounted on an axle. They are used in conjunction with the fly rod and attached at the base or the handle of the rod.

Fishing line is any cord made for fishing. The important parameters of a fishing line are its length, material, and weight (thicker, sturdier lines are more visible to fish). The refractive index is also important line with a refractive index similar to water are almost invisible to fish. The most important parameter to decide which line to use strength. This is the amount of weight the line can hold before hanging. We must balance the tradeoff between strength and visibility.

Flies as bait? Are you kidding?
Flies or artificial flies are constructed - "Linked" on a hook with thread, fur, feathers and other materials - in sizes and colors to match naturally occurring food or simply to excite a fish. And to add more confusion, the names of the flies: Wet and dry flies, nymphs, scud, eggs, streamers, steelhead, bass flies, salmon flies, and flies water salt.

You will be considered Sunglasses Fly Fisher well equipped if you bring waders, wading boots, net vest, polarized to protect your eyes and see through the reflection on the water, a hat to the harsh sun, sunscreen and dope bug (bug repellent) - if you do not want to be eaten alive by bugs before entering even a fish!

Armed with the stuff I read, I came to experience fly fishing without even going near a body of water.

Fly Fish

Since the earliest fisherman plucked fish in the water with their bare hands, fishermen have found many different methods of fishing. Fly fishing is one of the most old and has been in existence for hundreds of years. Is believed to have started in Roman times, are considered advanced methods of fly fishing that has developed in Scotland and England. With improved reels, line and fly gear fly fishing has grown in popularity by leaps and bounds.

Originally, fishing, fly is mainly used for catching trout and salmon, which are easily fooled by artificial flies. However, many fish species are being directed by fans of sport fishing with dry flies and wet. Today the lines are heavier and larger diameter. As a result, there is a need for greater reel that is required to hold the line size. Fishermen now investigating the local water life to determine the best colors and styles of flies that can be able to attract the local fish population.

The main objective of the fly fishing is to provide an artificial fly to the fish that will closely resemble an insect or a bug that is native to the area. Curious fishermen can spend much time researching the types of errors that flourish in the region, and to devote time to studying the types of fish and how to approach their victims.

Practice, practice, practice, much practice is needed to successfully fly Cast

For the fisherman switched to bait fishing fly fishing is a conversion period in which to learn the difference. With bait casting, the weight of seduction and the bait attracts the line of the coil and extends into the water. When fly fishing line thrown into the water and the fly line is the line in water. It takes a lot of practice and concentration to place the line that projects from the coil and the earth fly in the desired location on the surface of the water.

The two main types of lures used in fly fishing are the dry fly that remains on the surface and the wet fly is designed to sink once it hits water. Other flies, flies emerging called partially submerged under water, to duplicate the action of insects emerging from their larval stage.

Fly fishing requires the fisherman to adjust to local conditions and alter their technique depending on time of day and season. He will take a fly fisherman much practice and patience to develop the skills necessary to always catch fish.

Make your own flies

After a fly fisherman has mastered the difficult techniques of fly fishing you may want to design their own flies. It's a wonderful hobby. A manufacturer can create a master fly good collection. A nice and effective fly as can be to create rewarding.

Whether you create your own flies or become an avid collector, the art of fly fishing you can grow and become almost an addiction.

Fly casting is gripping or holding a fly rod correctly and to adopt the correct stance to maintain comfort and balance. The most basic rule to casting is based on the way a clock looks. Your head points straight up to 12:00, your cast (the tip of your rod) should go back to 10:00 and then forward to 2:00, releasing your line at the end of the forward motion. It is a common mistake to dip the rod below those two positions and almost always ends in a line tangle!

What are the 4 must have flies in fly fishing for trout?

im a beginer fly fisherman and i love all kinds of fishing. i think i know the 4 top patterns for each type of flys ( dry flies, wet flys, nymphs, and streamers) but i would like to know what other people think. please send links and please i would like to see alot of personal favorite patterns.

I'm from Montana and tied professionally a million years ago when I was in high school. My pick Royal Wulff, Royal Humpy, Elk Hair Caddis, and any hopper pattern for dry flies. For wets, all you really need is an Emergent Sparkle Pupa. Nymphs: Hare's Ear, Prince, Pheasant Tail, and all three in bead head (I get extras here because I was short on the wets). Streamers: Wooly Bugger, Muddler Minnow, Muddler Marabou White and Black.

The most fun I've had is dragging a Yellow Marabou Muddler across the top of really high muddy water. The browns would come right of the bottom and smash it like you've never seen. Some would come two feet out of the water after it.

Learning the skills of fly fishing is not an easy sport for all anglers. It involves precise angle to reaching the target position of artificial flies. Fly fishing is almost a game for many, as fishermen are concerned challenged to capture many different species of fish with the use of the fly rod imitating insects to attract fish. The success of fisheries Fly depends on many factors and a new factor is the lure fly fishing. Imitating insects are attaching lures or flies in line of the plane to be thrown into the water. This imitation of the fly is able to attract the fish and possibly trap them and catch.

There are different types of fly fishing lures or flies and each are listed below

Wet fly this type of lure imitates aquatic insects below the water surface. Meaning This type of lure design is modeled on insects drowned.

Streamer Lures

This is a type of deception is a form of decoy fly drowned. This type is designed to imitate small fish that are eaten by larger fish.

Dry Fly

This type of deception designed to imitate the adult stage of many aquatic insects. The bait should be able to run on water surface gently to make near real close and insects that fall into the water such as beetles and ants.

Nymphs Lures

This lures imitate the form of aquatic insect larvae. This is a particular form of bait fly drowned.

Lures surface

They are also called bass poppers. This type of lure design mimics the frogs and mice. They are made of bright colors that attract big fish such as pike or bass especially when they are causing commotion due to water movements.

Lures or flies may be procured or may be self-made. Manufacture of artificial flies or lures is a skill and many fishermen are learning to make their own bait instead of buying on the market. Flies For Fishing

In fly fishing, flies are generally divided into four types of artificial flies. (Flies are also known as decoys in some countries).

They are:

1 Dry flies

2 Wet flies

3 Nymphs

4 Streamers

The categories of flies can cross into each other. There is no real strict guidelines to classify flies depending on the country, the traditions of the terminology. (Some fishermen also classify appears as another class of flies. These areas partly below the surface and partially on the surface of the water, in imitation of things as ephemeral They can be caught again, drifting with the current or the wind or caught with small quick jerks or pulls. Experience using flies dry can be exhilarating as you can see the fish strike the fly. Dries are used seasonally in lakes and rivers and are generally effective when fish are actively feeding on insects above the water. Dry flies are usually made of lightweight materials are floating or ires par with that help on the fly sit on the surface of the water. A spray flotation or gel is applied to the dry fly for make it dynamic. A couple of false casts will also help to dry.

Wet flies
as its name indicates that the fly is caught in the water, either. The flies can imitate small bait fish, leeches, frogs, insects crawdad and swimming. Wets may be fished just under the surface with the dead drifts, slow twitching retrieve up quickly. Sometimes a decision will occur in the fly is sinking. wet To get deeper, the weight of heads or beads are effective, especially when combined with intermediate or sinking fly lines.

The nymphs are very effective and a common world-wide food source in rivers and lakes. Nymphs can be caught on the downward drift, and slow to recover medium, either just below the surface or at depth. They imitate the underwater scene insects such as mayfly nymphs, the nymphs and bead ladies. Much of the diet of trout consists of nymphs in most seasons and water. A leading long cape and is effective for nymphing, especially in clear waters or fishing.

Streamers are larger wet flies imitating bait minnows, sculpins and larger food appetizing. Coils tend to work better near background and are usually quickly recovered for salmon, the largest trout and also for saltwater fish. Bigger flies like streamers, May also cause an increase in catches, but do not be surprised if your four-inch land a small stream trout Twelve Inch. Streamers artificial can be colored and have a mixture of assorted materials fly tying.

Dry flies, wets, nymphs and streamers are all effective in the right environment. The secret to the best of your fishing is to use different techniques and test all the time. Do not afraid to try different types of flies and patterns, especially if fishing is slow. So no matter what country you live and regardless of how you classify your bird, make sure you have different types of flies to cover all conditions for fly fishing and fish. Now you are ready to seize the great!

Tortures for Flies: Fly Fishing

Canadian Fly Fishing

Up until a few years ago, I had no desire to compete in a fly fishing competition. "Why would I want to stress myself out doing something that I enjoy and that releases my stress?" I asked myself.  I enjoy wading down a river, casting to trout sipping dry flies off the surface, or watching wild birds flying to and from their nests. Of course, the experience of hooking and netting a fish is the best part of it, but it's not all there is to fly fishing, for me. I can go out and catch nothing all day, and still consider it a "good day."

So why would anyone consider, other than try to see who is "best," a fly fishing competition?

In 2006, I was asked by an acquaintance of mine to join his team that was competing in the Canadian Fly Fishing Championships that year. I was hesitant at first, but then decided that I would. It would be fun to go out on practice sessions with anglers I had never fished with before. I also thought I might have an advantage: The competition that year was being held on a river I considered my "home waters." I knew the river fairly well and I knew what flies had caught me fish in the past.  Boy, was I wrong!

As far as the final standings were concerned, I did not do well at all.  The atmosphere of competing was something so removed from my mind as far as fly fishing was concerned that I "blanked" (expression used when an angler catches no fish during a competition session) almost every session. I lost fish that I normally would have brought to the net. My casting was terrible. I simply wasn't used to the pressure of competing in a fly fishing competition. As far as any "home advantage, the anglers that eventually took medals in that competition were not from the area and had never fished that river before.

However, that experience also provided me with knowledge that I would not have gained if I had not competed. In a fly fishing competition that is sanctioned by the International Fly Fishing Federation (FIPS-Mouche) or by a national organization that is a member of FIPS-Mouche, the rules for competition are quite rigid - everything from barbless hooks, maximum size of beads on dressed flies, the distance between flies on a leader, and even how you fish from a boat (you must be seated at all times).

One of the most important things I learned was how to make best use of my time when fly fishing. Often, when fly fishing for leisure, we'll scratch our heads and wonder how to fish a particular fly, or even wonder at what fly to tie on our leaders when it doesn't appear there are any insects hatching off the water.  What depth should we fish?  When you have a competition session that is only 3 hours long and you don't get to choose the start and end time, you learn quickly that organization and time management can be just as important as any fishing or casting skills that you have. You learn how to make decisions quickly and get your fly into the water where it can catch fish.

In 2007, I again competed - this time, in Northern Alberta. It would be a type of angling I had done very little of previously - lake style fly fishing involving sitting in a row boat that is drifting with the wind.  Long rods and the use of a variety of types of lines were required.  And because there are two competitors per boat, good casting skills even in high winds are needed. No one wanted to return to shore after a session with their boat mate talking about how they took a fly to their head during one of your casts! So this provided me the opportunity to learn new fly fishing skills to fish in situations I'd never fished in before. These new skills definitely carry over into my leisure fly fishing and made me a better all round angler.

Although the competitions are competitive, there is also much camaraderie during the events. Knowledge between competitors is often shared and you'll find that the best competitors will even try to get you into some fish or give you some tips - as long as they are ahead of you, of course!  I made many new friends as a result of the competitions I entered.

If you want to seriously improve your fly fishing skills, don't discount the idea of competing once or twice a year.

Fly Fishing Outfitters
Where do I begin with fly fishing?

I really want to get into fly fishing. I have spin fished since I came out of the womb and never really gotten into casting flies. I have zero knowledge on it. I have zero gear and no idea where to start. I am going to attend a beginner's class at my local Orvis outfitter's store and I expect them to tell me a ton. I just can't wait for the class in a week. Anyway, any and all info welcome! I need some lists of rods and reels, line, and any other gear I should know about! Thanks!

Hello fellow fisherman. I was in the same boat you are in. I met a guy on a creek that i fish reguarly and i wasn't catching nothing on little rooster tails, and he walked by me with a stringer of brook trout. I asked him what he was using and he said a wet fly.to make a long story short we talked and he persuaded me to go get a fly rod. The gentleman at the fly store told me to buy a cheap combo deal, that way if i didnt like flyfishing i wouldn't be out a lot of money. when i was leaving the store his last words were "have patience is the key". I also bought books on how to cast and what flys to use. So the bottom line for you from me is
1.buy cheap rod
2.buy books on how to flyfish (very helpful
3.patience
4.use floating line and dry flies
5.if you love flyfishing then go buy a decent rod and reel combo.(i have 3 scott rods and i love them, 2-4weights 1-3weight)
6. tie your own flies if you want. i tie my own flies and i love doing it.
7. have fun doing it thats the main thing

I hope i helped you, good luck and good fishing.

Fly Fishing For Trout
Where is a good river or creek in Minnesota to Fly Fish for Trout and/or Salmon?

I would like for it to be in the North East area by Duluth and up.

The Baptism, Temperance and The French rivers are 3 favorites, (along with the Brule which is on the South Shore of Superior in WI- about 20-30 minutes from downtown Duluth).

I've caught plenty of nice "Loopers" and Salmon near the mouth of those streams.

In fact, almost all the streams that flow into Lake Superior have a possibility of being hot spots for Trout & Salmon.

Brook Trout are fun to catch well up-stream on the Knife River.

When you arrive in Duluth go to Marine General tackle shop or Great Lakes Fly Company for further info.

Let's face it, we dream in Technicolor of size 10 green dragon hatches or Hexagenia limbata as big as beavers - but the reality is Winter Time Is Midge Time. Often, the errors only in cold water are so small, that challenge most anglers to consider LASIK. And as you know, much of Food is below the surface.

In a fly-tying class, I once heard a famous fly local bull occurrence called something along the lines of "my second best supplier of fly tying material is Hobby Lobby. This, of course, assumes that Blue Heron Fly Shop where we were is the "ideal". Such is also known for the budget "is useless, if not Chartreuse, but as they say, is another story.

Armed with this jewel of wisdom, I toured all sections of Hobby Lobby. Eureka! Great little wires to tie "ribs" of the nymphs, wonderful foam sheets for the ground, a variety of types of thread to "rogues and beads, beads, pearls! All this is available at a fraction of the cost of their counterparts fly shop. Bingo!

From this wonderful Wall-o'-Beads, I found some small bit of metal in the little finger of small cylinder size. They came in a variety of colors such as copper, olive, purple and brown. Many have fancy names like Brown Metallic Iris Beads (the I took home) and many others. Perfect. We're talking tiny. Just the right size to squeeze just a Barb-less hooks size 20 and be proportionate.

Armed with these in my fly tying station, I started experimenting. If you've ever picked up and looked around the small water bugs, you will find Appendices and segmentations are not distinct unless under a microscope. So, along with the heads of little accounts with many simple body materials trying to find a simple solution the tie. I wanted to match the hatch about recent travel to the current. Finally cook until biots dyed goose. Originally, he had experimented with biots to tie Prince Nymphs in a much larger scale, and certainly a different application. My favorite color is olive Biot, and man, what a great biots subtle body Segmented do. Ultimately, I designed beads Duff / Biot Midge - perfect for catching a cold winter waters. More than just this emerge, I have developed a powerful two-punch combination that has proven time and again in tailrace many across Texas and Oklahoma.

Although the small grain / mosquito Biot is a murderer as a dropper below a larger nymph, One-Two Punch consists of a dropper below a dry look similar. Before giving the recipe, let me describe the simplicity of these two flies. The dry fly is thread of olive oil and Biot Olive / Gray Hackle in a size twenty barb less hook. The dropper, often fish only 6 inches below the dry is: olive, olive wire Biot, and the metal ball in a size twenty barb less hook. Simple, right? It's really easy to tie too. But do not let that make you feel guilty when you when you catch many trout with it.

Duff Dry Midge - Olive oil

Materials --

* Hook: Size 20 dried

* Thread: Olive 8 / 0

* Body: Goose Biot dyed olive

* Hackle: Olive / Gray size to match hook difference

* Head: Olive Thread

Developers - Barb Crush, to hook in vise thread, the knot jambs and wrap back to bend, tie in point of Biot, wrap thread forward, forward spiral Biot leaving segmentation and tie with a half hitch, the only basis Hackle equally divided, cut, wrap and tie Hackle, whip finish forming the head, adding the cement.

Duff Bead / Biot Midge - Olive Olive

Materials --

* Hook: Size 20 dried or scud / nymph

* Thread: Olive 8 / 0

* Body: Biot of olive dyed goose

* Head: Brown Iris Glass Bead

Technical - Crush Barb, account manager out on the hook, put hook screw thread bank, hub of the jamb and down to fold, tie in point of Biot, wrap thread forward, leaving Biot spiral forward to segmentation and binding with half hitch (optional - tie a few strands of crystal flash as a wing and closing clip), whip finish behind the head of accounts, add the cement.

To those not in the fly tying, but they are fly fishing, Scott has created a variety of dry flies and nymphs that no fly fisherman should be out. See Midge Duff Ultimate Pack.

Fly Fishing Tying
Is reindeer fur good for fly fish tying?

I have a reindeer skin about ten years old and I wonder if it would be worth anything to sell for fly-tying. It would be the same as a caribou skin I think.
Actually I'm thinking of cutting it up into patches to sell off. Some hair is brittle and some is not since there are guard hairs and an undercoat, but it's always been like that. It's tan in some areas, tan and gray in others and white around the edge of the pelt. The leather is still quite supple. The average length is about 1.5" but it's shorter where it is pure white. It is more brittle than regular hair though.
I just looked for them for sale and some places want like $250 for a single pelt. I paid like $15 for one in Finland and they had a stack of them two feet high. I figure I can get about 80 4" squares and sell them off for $3-$5 each.

As a material, yes, reindeer hair is perfectly fit for tying flies. As you say, a lot of people use it interchangeably with caribou hair. I'm sure it has its own coloration and would fit into some pattern just great.

I'm a little worried about the age -- hair gets brittle with time and exposure to air and UV light. Pests like moths and beetles can also damage the fur. If the hair still has a supple, waxy texture then it will work well. Pluck out a few hairs and roll them between your palms -- the hairs will bend and twist but hopefully they will not break into small pieces. Also, the hairs should be firmly attached to the hide -- they should not shed out easily. If the hairs break easily or if the hair is falling out of the hide, the value of this material will be limited, I think.

The best way to know is to take a sample of the fur to a fly tying shop or a friend who ties. If it checks out with someone who is knowledgeable, then you're set. I'd parse it out into fly-tying sized chunks. Animal hair usually comes on pieces of hide from 2-inches square up to maybe 6-inches square.

So, um, do I get a piece of hide for the answer? Heh heh.

In fly fishing, flies are generally divided into four types of artificial flies. (The flies are also called decoys, in some countries).

They are:

2 Wet flies

3 Nymphs

4 Streamers

The categories of flies can cross each other. There are no strict guidelines for the classification of flies and in terms of countries, the traditions of the terminology. (Some fishermen also classify emerges as another category of flies. These sit part below the surface and partly in the water, in imitation of ephemeral things, as newly emerging.)

Dry flies sit on top of water. They imitate the insects sitting on the surface, like mayflies, mosquitoes, Caddis flies, beetles, grasshoppers, spiders and spinners name a few types. They still fished, drifting with the tide or wind, or fish with small contractions and quick throws. Experience using flies dry can be challenging as you can see the fish strike the fly. Fishing is just wet below the surface with lots dead slow contractions to recover quickly. Sometimes a shot will occur as the fly sinks. To get the background wet, heads heel weighted or effective, especially when combined with intermediate sinking line or fly.

Nymphs are very effective and a common world wide source of food in the rivers and lakes. Nymphs can be fished in the fall, drifting, and slow recovery means, directly below the surface or in the background. They imitate the underwater phase of nymphs of insects like the mayfly, nymphs of stoneflies and damselflies. Much of the trout's diet consists of nymphs in most seasons and waters. A long leader and tippet nymphing is effective, especially in clear waters or fishing.

Streamers are larger wet flies imitating bait like minnows, sculpins and food more appetizing. Streamers usually work better in the bottom and in general are quickly recovered by the largest salmon, trout and for saltwater fish. Bigger flies like streamers, can also result in a greater catch, but do not be surprised when your four inches of serpentine lands a small twelve-inch trout. Streamers can be colored artificial and have a mixture of a variety of fly tying materials.

Dry flies, wets, nymphs and streamers are effective in the right environment. The secret to get the most out of your fishing is to use different techniques and test all the time. Do not be afraid to try different types of flies and patterns, especially if the fishing is slow. So no matter which country you live in and regardless of how to classify your fly, just make sure to have several types of flies to cover all conditions for fly fishing and fish. Now you are ready to capture great!
