The annual International Sportsmen's Exposition opens next Thursday, Jan. 14, at the San Mateo Event Center and runs through Sunday, Jan. 17. If you can't make that one, the Expo moves to Sacramento Jan. 21 to 24. Both are within an hour-and-a-half drive of Sonoma Valley and a great way to spend a day or two.

To me fly fishing has always meant one thing; standing on the edge of the water waving feathers back and forth in the air. My disdain for fly fishing could stem from the fact that my fishing mentor always referred to fly fisherman as 'flea flickers' or it could come from the fact that I live in Montana and people assume that since I love fishing, that has to mean that I fly fish. Oh well, it is what it is, the point of the matter is that fly fishing has been interpreted to be somehow superior to other types of fishing and I don't like that.

Many anglers consider flea flicking to be an art. I take umbrage with this notion. My fishing techniques are every bit the art form that fly fishing professes itself to be. Using ultra light equipment, small hooks, fishing line no heavier than 4 lb. test, all add up to be every bit the art form that flea flicking supposedly is.

I had someone say to me the other day, "I'm going to learn how to fish, my boyfriend is taking me fly fishing!" I replied, "That's too bad", and she had no clue what I was referring to. I was referring to the fact that yet another person was going to be introduced to the spectacle of waving feathers back and forth in the air. I'm sure she won't stick with it, so there's really no harm, but my point is that because I love fishing, she assumed that it was fly fishing that I was into, and that I would care if some jag-off who's trying to get in her pants is going to let her stand next to him while he waves feathers back and forth in the air!

The bottom line is that, to me, fly fishing will always be nothing more than waving feathers back and forth in the air by individuals who take their hobby much too seriously. And if they could stop assuming that just because I love to catch fish, that I love to fly fish, that would be great too, because obviously nothing could be farther from the truth.

Line Scientific Anglers
How long will my fly line last?

I just bought some scientific angler fly line. I was wondering if i should put it one now or like in may when i actually go fishing? I just wanna know if i should keep it in the box until May or will it matter?

You can put in now if you'd like. The line will last a relatively long time if you don't damage it by stepping on it and things like that. Keep it clean as per the manufacturer's recommendation and don't leave it baking in your vehicle. Line cuts kill a lot of lines, so be careful should you get a tangle or wrap your leader/tippet around the line. I've also seen a fair share of lines trashed by cigar and cigarette burns

Trolling reels are normally used for big game in the open sea-water trawling. Trolling is the process of dragging the bait and lures behind a moving ship, which is a productive way to locate schools of fish migration. The reason being, when a boat trolls on a bench Fish, the watch and shock surface emulates a ball of bait. This triggers the feeding instinct of many marine species and immediately sends the forefront of the school to investigate the commotion, with the rest of the herd following. Scientific Angler Fly
I would like to know what a fly rod called scientific angler bought in the 1960's would be worth? It's 8' 1" .

I found this fishing rod in my husbands closet after he died. It is in cloth cover and in metal tubing. It is a system 6 with a line weight of #6. It is in almost perfect condition. We had three daughter's who have no interest in fish, so I thought I would sell it, but don't know where to start.

Scientific anglers are more famous for their fly lines being of excellent quality, they haven't made many rods except a few, they are a good make and you should get about $50-110 for it, possibly more if its a limited edition or if its in good condition and a collector wants it. Its a shame no body wants to use it but these things happen. Try eBay i would put a reserve on it of a minimum of $80 if its in good condition.

Tough question. Might as well ask which is better -- Catholics or Lutherans? Personally, I gravitate toward Scientific Anglers. I have been using their products for a while and have watched their product lines evolve. However, there is a fellow here on Y!A whose handle is "RIO."

RIO, Scientific Anglers, and a few other companies are really duking it out for supremacy in the world of fly lines. Both of the lines you mention are at the same price point and they target anglers purchasing the high-middle (?) range of fly fishing products. They claim some of the same features -- welded loops, improved buoyancy, heavy forward weighting for more aggressive casting, etc. Both also come in a "neon" and "natural" color.

If you're planning to buy your line from a fly shop, you might ask the personnel there if any of them have these fly lines reeled up so you can try them. A few years ago I went to my fly shop to get some new fly line and one of the younger clerks was trying to up-sell me from the Scientific Anglers' "Professional" line to the "Mastery" line (same one that you're looking at). I didn't go for it until he pulled out a rod that had that very line on it. I was impressed enough with it to pay the extra $20 it cost me. Like I said, I have some brand loyalty to Scientific Anglers, but I'm pretty sure that if I bought a fly line at the same price point from a different company, it would get the job done. I don't want to tell you that your choice doesn't matter at all, but this will probably come down to personal preference...
