2013

About one day I join the others in the group reside in Namsen.

This will be the highlight of the year, an absolutely amazing group of good friends from all corners of the earth.

It will be posted up pictures each day from Namsen

The Atlantic Salmon Fishing[Norway: FiskumFoss Falls in full flow]
FiskumFoss Falls in full flowUntil recently the fishing on the Upper Namsen was separated into separate beats covering a total of 17kms of double bank fishing a distance of 45 kms from the sea. Although each of these beats individually covers some superb fly-water and very productive pools, it did to an extent limit the variety upon which we at WhereWiseMenFish have always placed great emphasis. This will change for 2009 with a rotation being implemented giving one the opportunity to fish all 3 of the best fly-water beats, Fiskumfoss, Ovre Media and Fossland, over the course of a week. Over the prime salmon fishing weeks from mid-June to mid-July the fishing will be fly only.

Fiskumfoss Falls Beat

One of the most prolific salmon beats in Norway; the Fiskumfoss beat is 1.1 kms of double bank fishing, starting just below the 34 meter high Fiskumfoss fall. This used to be the uppermost extent to which the salmon could run, (although there is now a salmon ladder tunnelled through the rock), and on account of this natural barrier it has turned it into a formidable holding pool. The average catch per rod is 1-2 salmon/day.

Ovre Media & Fossland[Norway: Fossland Lodge]
Fossland Lodge on the left - A very short walk to the River! These two beats, which total just over 5 kms of double bank fishing make up the bulk of the Upper Namsen fly-water. There are 13 named pools with all the variety that one would expect from a big powerful river such as the Namsen; deep pots, boulder strewn runs, gravel bars, fast rapids and glides. The river is more than wide enough to accommodate genuine double bank fishing.

Additional Upper Namsen Water

Although Fiskumfoss, Over Media & Fossland make up the prime fly-water it is by no means the extent of the Upper Namsen Fishing. The Sandola River, which joins the Namsen immediately below Grong, has additional fly-water. There is also some superbly isolated streamy fly-water above Fiskumfoss Falls which can also be utilised. This stretch is particularly good in low-water conditions. Alongside its big fish the Namsen is famous for harling with many long deep pools. For those who would prefer to fish for Salmon by means other than a fly, the Holandsoya & Oiem beat, a short distance below Grong, is ideal. It is also within easy walking distance of the farmhouse where guests fishing this stretch usually stay.

Upper Namsen Fishing-Accommodation[Norway: Hotel Vertshuset Grong]
Hotel Vertshuset GrongThere are 3 accommodation options open for those fishing the Upper Namsen beats, Hotel Vertshuset Grong, Fossland lodge and Holandsoya Gard.

Fossland Lodge

An extremely comfortable and homely wooden lodge on the banks of the river overlooking the Ovre Media & Fossland beats. Very comfortable and with all the facilities you would expect from a top notch fishing lodge. Ideal for groups, it has 4 bedrooms in the main building and a further 2 in adjoining cottages.

Here is esteemed artist Howard Butterworth in action painting at Borrowston on the River Dee opening ceremony 2013, celebrating the River Dee and 150th birthday of the Dee District Salmon Fishery Board. Howard is an artist of great renown and sees his paintings fetch top dollar at market. Howard wanted to continue his dedicated efforts as a kind & generous supporter of the River Dee, Its education programmes for children, and of course the tremendous amount of habitat restoration work restoring the River Dee valley to its former glories. Over 100 years ago many riparian forests were removed which allowed sheep farmers to prosper and when they moved out, Deer & Forestry became the main resource for many land owners.

Now with global warming affecting the upper Dee valley which is harming the progeny of our treasured spring salmon stocks, action is being taken to mitigate against this increasing and maligning threat. The £2.5 million Pearls in Peril project will see a terrific amount of native woods being planted throughout the upper catchment and tributaries which will provide shading to cool the river in summer months, stabilise the banks against erosion preventing siltation, and provide a home for invertebrates which are vitally important to our rare freshwater pearl population and juvenile spring salmonids. This is a hugely ambitious project, albeit the River Dee organisations have a great track record in project delivery, with the E.U Cass Life project an example of exemplary delivery of a large match funded project. The River Dee Trust need to find funds constantly to allow them to seek matched funding opportunities that arise from time to time and enable great restoration work programmes to be undertaken. Every contribution made to the River Dee Trust is crucial and does get used for very important work projects, the likes of which could never be undertaken in a short time span without this collaborative support.
Never more than now has the Trust need your support, and to this end Howard has created a wonderful painting for supporters of the River Dee & its native wildlife to purchase. For every high quality Giclee print sold by the Butterworth Gallery at Ballogie, Howard will donate £25 to the River Dee Trust. Howard asks supporters of the Dee to embrace this initiative. Will you please consider providing a nice home to a lovely image that celebrates the stewardship of the River for the last 150 years by the River Dee Board ? You can go to Howard's website to order a copy of this fine artwork, and in the process really make a vital gesture of support to our River Dee. http://www.butterworthpaintings.co.uk/acatalog/River_Dee_Opening_Ceremony_2013.html

Dinner at Glen Lui

Photo Thomas Thore
Photo Thomas Thore

Dee Dram Photo by Thomas Thore

Over and out from TT Cheers.

New exciting collaboration with Norwegian Flyfishers Club, I will shortly add the tab to the line above with information about this

The Norwegian Flyfishers Club is pleased to announce that April Vokey will be offering a one-week workshop on the over 10 kilometers of their private Gaula River beats, in the second week of the June 2013 season.

From June 9th - 16th, a limited number of NFC guests will have the opportunity to fish with and learn from one of British Columbia's most internationally renowned fishing guides.

April's expertise in Spey casting and fly tying for wild steelhead and salmon is coupled with a passion for environmental conservation. In 2007 she founded B.C. based guiding operation, Fly Gal Ventures, where she presently guides and instructs anglers on some of B.C.'s best steelhead destinations.

April is a certified casting instructor of the Federation of Fly Fishers and a fly-fishing columnist. As a member of the Northwest Outdoor Writers Association she is also the Canadian Field Editor for Chasing Silver Magazine and the Steelhead Columnist for Fly Fusion Magazine. Her works and photos have also been published in Fly Fisherman Magazine, Salmon Trout Steelheader (STS), Field and Stream, Canadian Fly Fisher, Flyfishing and Tying Journal and several other international publications.

Using the exclusive fly-waters of the Norwegian Flyfishers Club, April will bring her expertise in tackle and high and cold water fishing techniques to Norway for the first time. Skagit and Scandinavian lines and their casting techniques will be the main topic of the week. Her presentations will be related mostly to spring conditions and tactics and all guests will benefit from her individual consultations and tutorials throughout the week on the river.

The course will include:
• Introduction and orientation of the course by April
• Techniques to be used during spring fishing for big salmon
• Casting demonstrations and individual casting tutorials

The fences of the Estancia Maria Behety surround 495 square miles of cattle and sheep grazing country, approximately 275,000 acres. All of these pampas border the northern bank of the Rio Grande opposite the Estancia Jose Menendez and Estancia Despedida. The three fishing lodges on the opposite bank alternate daily use of slightly 32 miles of Estancia Maria Behety river frontage in a friendly, organized and harmonious relationship that insures a quality and private experience for everyone on the river.

From its promontory nearly 30 kilometers from the estancia entrance, Estancia Maria Behety Lodge is within minutes of more than 100 of the finest pools on the river and their location alone ensures one of the top trophy trout trips on the planet. The distinctive architecture of the historic turn-of-the-century ranches of Tierra del Fuego is incorporated in the design of the lodge. The view from the living room is a breathtaking panorama that encompasses the river valley and the remnants of the Andean cordillera to the West. The lodge is limited to only twelve anglers for each of the 14 weeks of the season. The large and tastefully decorated guest rooms are shared by two anglers and feature private baths and a spacious alcove for storage of equipment and tackle.

Everything about the Estancia Maria Behety Lodge revolves around the Menendez Family's personal guarantee and total commitment to offering the finest fly fishing experience in the Americas. The guides are renowned for both their intimate knowledge of the Rio Grande and consistent success in bringing monster sea trout to the bank. All of the guides at our lodges on the Rio Grande are Argentines. In fact the entire staff and management at both lodges on the Estancia Maria Behety are home grown; the chefs, hostess, maids, yard boys, every single employee is there to meet and/or exceeded your trip expectations.

Space for the short season at Estancia Maria Behety is very limited and if you are interested in going next year, call or email us as soon as possible.

Dear All

Our colleagues at FishPal have been busy through the close season with a number of innovative projects. One of these projects is the launch of the Free FishPal App for I phones which allows you to access the FishDee site and many more.

I have added it onto my Iphone and it looks fine, seems to work fine and is quick !

Anne Woodcock writes :

The start of the 2013 salmon season sees the launch of our free app for smart phones. It includes information from each river on this week's catches, today's river levels, and current rod availability for the next few months. Phones can be used to book online, or by telephone if preferred.

Gift vouchers can also be purchased and there is information on each beat on the river, where to stay, latest reports on the river and current catch comparisons between rivers.

This is the first salmon fishing app of its kind in the UK and possibly in the world too. At the moment it is in BETA testing mode, which means that you are welcome to use it, but there may be some things that need to smoothed out or developed further.

The app works on all major platforms and can be downloaded by using your phone's browser to go to app.fishpal.com
