Time lapse sequences of photographs taken by the crew of expeditions 28 & 29 onboard the International Space Station from August to October, 2011, who to my knowledge shot these pictures at an altitude of around 350 km. All credit goes to them. HD, refurbished, smoothed, retimed, denoised, deflickered, cut, etc. All in all I tried to keep the looks of the material as original as possible, avoided adjusting the colors and the like, since in my opinion the original footage itself already has an almost surreal and aestethical visual nature.

Njut!

Dear Friend of the River Dee

I wanted to advise that the River Dee fundraising brochure we have been working on has been produced and brochures arrive today for distribution.

It's taken a bit of time to get it right but we feel we have achieved this with a super mix of generously donated fabulous auction lots to raise funds to help us carry our vital river restoration work programmes and secure match funding.

I am eternally grateful to all who have kindly helped by donating these fabulous lots for auction, they have been so kind, and now we need to announce this to as wide an audience as we can reach.

You can review the fundraising brochure of auction lots by using this online link http://issuu.com/dee-trust/docs/27339_dee_trust_auction_prog_lo-res or review the attached pdf.

I wondered if you had a group or database of clients/friends who would like to read this brochure-fishermen all have cabin fever now the fishing seasons over, so perhaps this will ease their pain?
Please circulate this to as many people as you can who you think may find this of interest-I know this is a busy time of the year, but any help you can provide would be very much appreciated.

I need to circulate this news to as wide an audience as possible and I need your help if you have a spare few minutes to help me distribute this news.

I would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Kind regards & tight lines in 2012

The River Dee Trust needs help to be able to meet our aims and continue looking after the Dee and the surrounding area, for many years to come. Therefore we are holding an auction to raise funds for the restoration work that it undertakes on the River Dee. The auction has 14 premier lots which are outlined in a brochure (click here to view as pdf or here to view as online catalogue; alternatively, contact the River Office to request a hard copy).

You can bid on a lot by submitting a sealed bid by 29th February or by attending our final event in London on the evening of Thursday 1st March 2012 where all lots will "go under the hammer".

Our London event is being held at the Savile Club, 69 Brook St, Mayfair, W1K 4ER from 6.30 to 8 pm. Attendance is free and there will be a supply of whisky and canapés as well as a guest speaker. All we request is that you let us know if you will be attending prior to the event (please inform the River Office, 013398 80411, info@riverdee.org by Friday 24th February). However, if you cannot make the event you can still bid on a lot by placing a telephone bid on the evening or by sending us a sealed bid (see brochure for further information).

Queries

If you have queries relating to any of the lots or the auction please contact the River Office (013398 80411, info@riverdee.org). We may be able to provide you with additional information on the lots or may contact the lot donor on your behalf where necessary. Once the auction has ended and payment received, contact details will be supplied for you to make final arrangements directly with the donor.
Use of Funds

The proceeds from this auction will go to further our delivery of our education programme, support our up-and-coming tree planting project in the Upper Dee and help fund further easements of man made barriers to fish migration. Please look around this website, view our most recent annual report or our most recent survey bulletins to find out more about our work.

Dee Dram Photo Thomas Thore
Dalmore Dee Dram Photo Thomas Thore Dalmore Dee Dram Photo Thomas Thore

The Dalmore Dee Dram
The funds generated by the sale of the Dalmore Dee Dram will be used to directly fund the easing of five obstructions to fish migration across the Dee catchment. The obstructions are either historic weirs that impede fish passage resulting in fewer fish making it through to potential spawning grounds, or are badly designed culverts and bridge aprons that completely block fish movements. By using the support from the Dalmore Dee Dram we aim to seek match funding from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) River Restoration Fund to ensure that the money works harder to the benefit of the fish and the river. Overall approximately 25 miles of river and tributaries should be opened up.
The second area that we are working on with the support of Dalmore is tackling diffuse pollution with local farmers. Diffuse pollution in this context is the run-off of silt, sand and soil from nearby fields into tributaries causing spawning grounds to become silted up and juvenile nursery areas to become smothered. Over the last ten years over 80 miles of buffer strips have been installed across the Dee catchment helping to reduce this diffuse pollution, allowing the streams to recover and the fish populations to flourish once again. The Dalmore Dee Dram will be acting as a catalyst by helping the local farming community gain access to the technical support to allow them to apply for Scottish Government grants to install the buffer strips and maintain them in years to come. The Dalmore Dee Dram is vital for this process as it allows us to build up a good practical relationship with the local farmers and helps deliver real benefits to the fish over the coming years. Your purchase of the Dalmore Dee Dram will see a donation of £4 from every bottle sold go directly to fund these important works and will be topped up with match funding to make your contribution worth at least £8-your support is vital. We hope you enjoy your purchase of the Dee Dram whether enjoying with friend or as a fabulous gift item for a friend or relative. sláinte mhaith

Exciting Travel News from the Atlantic Salmon Reserve!

Introducing the ASR - Finnair - Helsinki to Murmansk Charter for the 2012 fishing season!

The Atlantic Salmon Reserve is delighted to announce that there will be a significant reduction on the charter price for our ASR guests of nearly 30% - down to $500 per person each way, or $1000 round trip. In addition, it is now possible to bring up to 35kg of baggage + rod case.

The charter flight will be operated by the reliable Finnair company, in an Embraer regional jet and Airbus aircraft every Saturday throughout our late May to September season.

This reduction in price was made possible by a joint cooperation between the ASR together with Frontiers, Roxton Bailey Robinson, and Fly Fish Yokanga with the sole purpose of reducing the cost for our respective fishing guests.

For further details about the flight schedule and hotel recommendations in Helsinki please have a look at the travel section of our ASR website - http://www.kharlovka.com/travel.html

Other Improvements for the 2012 season include:
Reducing the number of Rods on both the Kharlovka and Rynda camps.
Lowering our overall fishing prices by 15%

I was able to collect some specs from several sources for the upcoming Nikon D4 camera.

The [NR] rating on those specs is 90% which means this is the real deal with maybe some small details being wrong possibly due to wrong translation.

After many rumors, it feels like we are really close to the truth now.

Nikon D4 specs

  • 16.2 MP
  • 11 fps
  • 100-102,400 native ISO range, expandable to 50 and 204,800
  • CF + XQD memory card slots! That's right, the Nikon D4 will have the new Compact Flash XQD memory card slot.
  • Compatible with the new Nikon WT-5 wireless transmitter
  • Integrated Ethernet in the camera
  • Face detection/recognition function that will be working in the viewfinder (maybe some type of a hybrid viewfinder? Nikon had several related patents)
  • Improved video, I have no other details on that but my guess is 1080p/30/25/24 and 720p/60/30/25/24 similar to the Nikon D800
  • Uncompressed video out through the HDMI port
  • Ability to assign the two buttons on the front of the camera to smooth aperture control during video recording
  • Improved 51 AF points
  • AF detection range will go down to EV-2.0 (the D3s went to EV -1)
  • Autofocus system: 9 cross-type sensors that are operational up to f/8

The Nikon D4 is clearly made to compete with the Canon EOS 1Dx. I will stay conservative on the announcement date, but there is a very good chance that the Nikon D4 will be announced right before or during the PMA show in Las Vegas (January 10-13, 2012).

With the next round of pro DSLR cameras I think Nikon will make a clear separation of the D800 and D4. This is why they will probably announce both cameras around the same time in 2012. The D4 will have low MP count, high fps, high ISO. The D800 will have high MP count, low fps, lower ISO.

This is a clear differentiation from the previous D3/D700 offering that shared the same sensor/technology.

We are delighted that the online auction was a success - it raised £6,550 for the River Dee Trust.

A HUGE THANK YOU to the very generous donors of the auction lots as no funds could have been raised without them.

The proceeds from this auction will go to further our work in delivering our education programme, supporting our up-and-coming tree planting project in the Upper Dee and help fund further easements of (man made) barriers to fish migration.
